The Transition Town movement urges us to engage on three levels: the head, the heart and the hands.
• The Local Produce Guide engages us through the ‘head’, giving us the knowledge to choose local products. It shows where, when and from whom you can buy primary produce, enabling easy tracking of food miles.
• Local Farmers’ Storyboards, located in six greengrocer outlets shire wide, tell the stories of our farmers as they relate to the land and unpredictable weather. These storyboards connect us to our farmers through our humanity, our ‘heart’. Farmers are early adapters to climate change, their resilience in dealing with unpredictable weather conditions, continues to put food on our table.
• The Low Food Miles Logo enables us to take action, to use our ‘hands’ to identify local produce and make the choice to buy it. By purchasing produce bearing the low food miles logo, shoppers use their consumer power to make a difference.
BuyIng Food produced locally and transported
over short distances lowers our carbon footprint. The growing Abundance project aims to give our community the tools to live more sustainably. The Local Produce Guide, the Low Food Miles Logo and our Local Farmers’ Storyboards have been developed to encourage our community to strengthen and relocalise our economy, increase food security and reduce our carbon footprint.
This guide helps us to source and buy seasonal fresh food from within the Mount Alexander Shire. Local food reduces transportation and ensures nutritional value is retained by getting produce from the paddock to the plate as quickly as possible.
Around the world, many communities have taken up these ideas and become ‘Transition Towns’. The growing Abundance project is our opportunity to adopt the Transition Town approach.

Introduction
Like our farmers, consumers can be adaptable and resilient and have the capacity to deal with climate change. consumers buying locally, support our community of farmers, promote our region’s food security and lower our carbon footprint. choosing to shop locally, relocalises our economy, supports our retailers, and potentially reduces our food costs. using our consumer power in this way, we are shopping sustainably, locally and socially responsibly.
creating a system that is self-supporting and viable, this guide is designed to connect our farmers, retailers and consumers in a closed loop. our retailers become the ‘enablers’ of this positive model; supporting farmers by providing a local market and supporting consumers by providing access to local produce.
LOW FOOD MILES ATyOUR gREENgROcER
Six greengrocers representing our shire collaborated with growIng ABundAnce to create the Low Food Miles Logo and its Charter. our six champion retailers are; Ashley at Harry and georges, eva at green goes the grocer, glen at Maldon 50km Local, Jeff at castlemaine Fruit Supplies, graham at the Food garden and Simon at the Little red Apple.
Visit any of these retailers to find copies of the Local produce guide, learn more about our local farmers featured on the Farmers’
Storyboards and find produce carrying the
Low Food Miles Logo.
These stores have all independently
supported local producers for
years. now they see the advantages
of working collectively toward reducing the carbon footprint of local trade. They have become initiators in this innovative approach to business in our town. we expect they will be joined by many more retailers who decide to adopt the Low Food Miles Logo and its charter. As stakeholders and supporters of this project, these retailers are committed to providing an ongoing link between the customer and the producer. please talk to them about this project.
The Low Food Miles Charter defines the philosophy of the Logo and its intended use. retailers within Mount Alexander Shire will ensure their suppliers meet the following terms when they display the Low Food Miles Logo:
•The Low Food Miles ‘Local Shire’ Logo is to be used only on primary produce (fruit and vegetables) grown in the Mount Alexander Shire.
•The Low Food Miles ‘100 Miles’ Logo is to be used only on primary produce (fruit and vegetables) grown within 100 miles of the castlemaine post office.
•primary processed foods like honey, eggs, cheese, wine, olives, olive oils, juice, meat and bread are eligible to bear the ‘Local Shire’ Logo if they are produced or manufactured within the shire using at least 80% of ingredients sourced within the shire.
•The ‘100 Miles’ Logo is to be used on these primary processed foods if they are produced or manufactured within the shire using at least 80% of ingredients sourced within 100 miles of the castlemaine post office.
For details of the charter in its entirety please go to: www.cch.org.au/growing.shtml or www.transitionma.org.au.

WHO THIS gUIDE IS FOR
The growIng ABundAnce project aims to create achievable solutions for our every-day lives. Householders can use the Local produce guide to inform daily shopping habits. Restaurants, cafes or hotel owners can consult this guide when ordering fresh produce and wine. Retailers can use this guide to contact as many local growers as possible to stock their produce extensively and visibly within shops.
HOW TO USE THIS gUIDE
This guide includes local food, local wines and service providers. It also contains a comprehensive list of outlets supplying local produce in the Mount Alexander Shire. use this guide to source and purchase as much local produce as possible from within the Shire. If Shire produce is un-available consider purchasing produce from within 100 miles. If this is not possible, consider purchasing from
within the state of Victoria, then within Australia. Avoid purchasing imported fresh fruit and vegetables and imported primary produce such as meat, dairy, honey, eggs, wine, etc, if you can.
The growIng ABundAnce project aims to create adaptable and resilient systems for our children and future generations that are socially just, economically viable and environmentally sustainable.
UpDATES
The information in this guide will change and we cannot guarantee that it will remain up to date. Stay tuned for a regularly updated version of the Local produce guide on our website cch.or.au/growing.shtml or www.transitionma.org.au.
The expanded ‘100 Mile’ version of the guide is planned for 2012. For further information, or to be included in the guide, email [email protected].

This five hectare vineyard contains mature plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The vines grow on the slopes of Mount Alexander and are amongst the first vineyards in the Harcourt/Mount Alexander district. ‘Soft viticulture’ practices opt for sulphur and copper sprays, minimal use of chemical sprays and minimal irrigation, which produces intense flavour in the grapes.
Located midway between Maldon and Newstead, this estate overlooks Cairn Curran Reservoir. Three generations work the vineyard and make the wine together. The winery produces three distinct styles of Shiraz: ‘Bold Red’, ‘Winemakers Classic’ and ‘Reserve’. Extension of the vineyard includes a new section of Semillon, available for vintage shortly, followed by Duriff, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling.

Harcourt Valley Vineyards thought they would try their hand at brewing. Sightings is currently the only beer from the Bendigo Region. This popular Pale Ale has a bright apricot orange glow, its nose shows tropical fruit and a hint of sugar. It’s well worth a look if you are after more flavour and bored with mainstream beers!

Located in the foothills of Mount Tarrengower, this vineyard adjoins the banks of the Cairn Curran Reservoir. Sustainable viticultural practices include under-vine mulch, sheep grazing, minimal irrigation and minimal organic sulphur and copper sprays. No artificial pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers are used. This vineyard aims to continually improve soil nutrition and structure and encourage biodiversity. The local bird life is promoted by retaining the surrounding bush and ongoing native plantings to discourage introduced birds such as ravens and starlings.
