buzzwords:vegan,glutenfree,cold-pressedjuice,organiccoffee.Ithought,OMG,heaven.…Iwalkedinside,andbehindthecounterwasayoungwomanwithfire-engine-redhairmakingasmoothie.Iperusedthemenuandcheckedoutthevibe.Shelookedatmeandsaid,“We’renotopenforbusinessyet,butcanIhelpyou?”Isaid,“Ohno!Iwasabouttoorderoneofyourvegan,gluten-freedonutholes.”Thenshesaidthemagicwords:“Takeone;it’sonme.”

ofthatconstantlycomingatus,whenitcomestochangingourdiet,itcanfeelutterlyparalyzing.Iknowaboutthatfirsthandbecausefoodhadasimilareffectonmeinmylateteenstoearlytwenties.Andironically,inmystruggletocontrolfood,itendedupcontrollingme.Iwasafashion-obsessedgirl,readingeverymagazineIcouldgetmyhandson,thumbingthroughthepagesofsize-0models,alongsidethemyriadwaystoloseweight.Istartedtoobsessivelycountmycaloriesandmyfatintake.Foodbecamemyenemy.Witheverybiteoffood,IfearedI’dgainweight.Afteryearsofavoidingfamilydinnersandoutingstorestaurantswithfriends,Iwokeuponedayandknewtherehadtobeanotherway.AndsoIbeganajourneytoliveahealthyandbalancedlifeonceandforallandtofeelempoweredaboutmyfoodchoices.
