POLYCULTURAL CENTERstate college,pennsylvania

fall 2013

The Polycultural Center is a place of agricultural education, research, and outreach. The program is divided into three buildings: the outreach building, the education building, and the research building. The outreach and education buildings interact with a large public zone in the center of the site. The research building remains more private as it branches off from the main central area.

To unify the public buildings and outdoor market, a large shed-like shell runs overhead. The shell moves to create a variety of indoor/outdoor areas, maximizing the usability of the spaces.

The education and outreach buildings face the public as they both open into a large plaza and market area. The education building hosts classes to inform students and the public about ways to contribute to and support local agriculture. The outreach building provides auditorium, exhibition, and marketplace areas to promote a self-sustaining agricultural system.

The research building is used mostly by students and faculty, so it branches off from the main public zone for more privacy. The upper floor contains a library and reading loft, and the lower floor holds the private labs which open up to the agricultural fields. Auditorium, Classrooms, & Market

CUSTOM BLOCK WALLstate college,pennsylvania

spring 2011

Designed and built for the Penn State Recycling Center, the wall defines a small outdoor gathering space without com-pletely isolating the area from surrounding views. To participate in the work of the facility, the wall was fabricated using as many recycling processes as possible. By designing a pivoting joint system and serpentine wall form, the structure uses no mortar so that it may be reconfigured to accommodate future uses.

Page 11: Julia Brooks - Architecture Portfolio

11

The steel rods that act as pins in the pivoting connection were reclaimed from discarded stadium seats. The formwork for the blocks was made entirely of used cardboard that was stacked, glued, and band-sawed into appropriate shapes. These shapes were bound together with broken bicycle tubes and wrapped in old tarps to protect them from moisture, making them concrete-ready. Fly ash, a normally useless biproduct of coal production, acted as an aggregate in the concrete mixture. A bicycle-drawn cart moved the finished blocks to the recycling center, avoiding all energy costs in transportation.

EVENT CENTERvilla borghese

rome, italyspring 2014

The Eventarium takes the place of an unused portion of the Villa Borghese in Rome, Italy. The site is situated on top of an existing underground garage which has vents and circulation shafts that create abnormal circular holes across the entire site. The Eventarium builds on the existing conditions and exemplifies them by adding new levels and more vertical and horizontal porosity.

The program includes three core pieces, a horse arena/outdoor event space, an auditorium/indoor event space, and a museum. Shops, restaurants, and cafes extend off of the three main program pieces, filling the central piazza with a variety of destinations. The ground plane peels up and houses the program below, creating an inhabitable green roof that skews the perception of what is above and below ground. The green roof also hosts a range of destinations including gardens, parklets, an outdoor auditorium, dining locations, dog parks, and arena viewing areas.

INTERPLAY PARKcolumbus,

ohiosummer 2013

Ground Level Section

InterPlay Park is nestled between two buildings in the heart of Columbus. A play tower entertains children, and two grassy lounge hills are a getaway from bustling streets. Raised viewing areas provide views of the scenic State House and the quaint Pearl Alley. A transformative display surrounds users, ensuring a unique experience upon every visit. The wood path folds up to hold touch screens that allow anyone to interact with the larger dis-play. The digital surroundings can be an exhibit, an information hub for Co-lumbus events, a film, or an educational illustration. The dynamic display screens react to the current users and needs of the city so that Interplay Park becomes a constant reflection of Columbus life.

SPRINGCREEK FOOTBRIDGEstate college,pennsylvania

spring 2013

The Springcreek Park Footbridge provides better access to portions of the park while also acting as a destination point. By hosting a large elevated observation area, the bridge allows users to hover over the calm creek and enjoy the park's scenic surroundings. The bridge is a custom hollow steel tube construct with wooden tread and railings. The center of the bridge opens up to the surrounding park area with more transparent materi-als. The railings transition from wood to wire, allowing a more direct visual connection to the creek from the two benches at the center of the bridge. The platform’s floor also transitions from wood to a perforated steel grate, creating a further sense of transparency. The proj-ect was designed and constructed over the time span of two semesters. Currently, additions to the project are underway, including ramps, landscape design, and sig-nage for the park.

RECREATION CENTERbloomfield,

pennsylvaniafall 2012

The site is located under the Bloomfield Bridge and next to a large vegetated ravine. The surrounding Bloomfield area is dense and lacking parks, so the recreation center concentrates on maximizing green space. The existing bridge di-vides the site into two main zones. The area that borders small streets and houses acts as an open public space where the town can see and take part in the activities of the recreation center. The part of the site that borders the ravine acts as an escape from the narrow streets and provides plenty of greenery and free-form landscaping.

STUDENT CENTERuniversity of the arts

philadelphia, pennsylvaniaspring 2013

The University of the Arts Student Center is located on Broad Street in Philadelphia. The university's buildings currently provide no destination for students of every area of study to congregate and interact. The Student Center acts as a place for students, faculty, and the public to come together.

A large and versatile gallery on the ground floor displays works of art in every form that the school offers. The street level displays allow the public to take part in the school and allow students to see work in areas of study outside of their own. The building hosts many large and open spaces which are lacking on the rest of the campus. Students can use these spaces as working studios for collab-orative projects between students of different majors. The spaces become more private as they move upward in the building, finally ending with a library and reading loft on the top floor. Accompanying the library is a small semi-enclosed roof-top garden that allows students to escape the city streets while still being outdoors. Ground Floor - Exhibition
