Addendum B. Administrative Achievements

As Interim Associate Dean & Director of the SIU Graduate School

(January 2018-present) –

- I created an atmosphere of acceptance and an open-door policy for all

graduate students within the Graduate School

- I streamlined processes and initiated electronic efficiencies throughout all

areas of the Graduate School

- I enhanced communication between the Graduate School and the

Directors of Graduate Studies by developing a monthly newsletter that

contains all timely information for the programs

- I transitioned the Graduate Saluki Stories to an online video format that

can be used more effectively to recruit students and highlight the

amazing things our students are doing

- I fostered an atmosphere of collegiality within the staff of the Graduate

School where there had previously been quite a bit of turmoil

- I fostered collaboration with the programs by enhancing communication

and processes for the Directors of Graduate Studies (online manuals,

upload videos of workshops, access to professional webinars…)

- I reinvested the minimal recruiting budget of the Graduate School to

better aid programs in Graduate Student recruitment

- I earmarked savings with a new application portal/CRM for additional

recruitment initiatives

- I have advocated strongly for an Assistant Dean for Graduate School

Diversity or Student Success

- I have fostered collaborations across campus and integrated components

of multiple university units to maximize resources and provide more

comprehensive professional development and student success programs

for graduate students.

As Interim Chair of Public Health and Recreation Professions (August

2016-December 2018) –

- I hired high quality new faculty in a time of severe budget constraints

- I built an expert team and led them to achieve full accreditation of the

MPH program through the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)

in the spring of 2018

- I led a complete overhaul of the program assessment plans and reports

- I led and mentored faculty and staff to work collaboratively with

diverse constituencies

- I supported and facilitated the successes of undergraduate and

graduate students, especially international students

As Chair, Department of Kinesiology (January 2016-December 2018) -

- I hired high quality new faculty in a time of severe budget constraints

- I updated the exercise physiology lab spaces and equipment in Davies

Hall.

Addendum C. Philosophy of Leadership

My personal philosophy of leadership involves taking care of people and

advancing the mission of the institution. This will only occur when people feel

valued, safe, and empowered, and requires honesty and integrity in all areas.

My motivation comes from my heart for service to others and helping people

achieve excellence in their goals. My background is heavy in team-building

and I have the following skills or qualities that aid me in successful leadership

roles:

- I am a highly organized and creative individual with effective

management skills

- I am able to navigate complex situations and develop solutions

leading to cooperation between disparate groups and individuals

- I am recognized for vision, energy and integrity

- I have a strong ability to identify, recruit, and develop people from

diverse backgrounds to their fullest potential

- I maintain a forward and innovative vision with energy and

positivity in a collegial environment

- I am a team builder - able to gain consensus from diverse groups

of professionals, so they worked seamlessly in a highly productive

team

- I am able to see and express the “big picture” in a way that

inspires and engages people on all levels

- I have a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement of

programs, people, and administration

Opportunities/Future Goals in Graduate School Education:

- Enhance graduate Student Success initiatives for ALL graduate

students

- Provide strong advocacy for financial support of student research

- Develop a Graduate School Executive Council to provide

input/guidance on important areas such as enrollment

management, student success and career services

- Develop a Graduate Faculty Fellowship opportunity to take on

specific projects within graduate education

- Continue to facilitate faculty, staff, and student recruitment

initiatives

- Continue to enhance the team approach in conjunction with leaders

of other graduate programs within the university

- Develop initiatives/programs that enhance/improve public opinion

of the value of graduate education

- Increase the flexibility within graduate education

o Develop a method to test new programs quickly instead of

waiting for formal approval (pilot test)

o Develop a mechanism for an interdisciplinary

professional master’s degree
