Heavenly Father, Remind us that we cannot change the past, and that we should not ruin the present by worrying about the future. Help us always to see the needs of others and to know that with you beside us to guide us, we can help to fulfill those needs. And now bless this food to our use and us to Your service. Amen

ANNUAL FUNDRAISER AND NEW MEMBER RECRUITMENT EVENT AT URBAN FLATS RESTAURANT
May 22, 2012
It is with sadness that I write to inform you that one of our club’s most dearly loved members, Burt Van Wagner, passed away. He will be remembered as a devoted club member who was instrumental in creating two of our club’s annual traditions: the Thanksgiving dinner at the Jacksonville Beach’s Senior Center and the Pancake/Recognition breakfast at Fletcher High School. Please keep Burt’s family in your thoughts and prayers. He will be sorely missed. Debbie Johnson

Burt Van Wagner passed from this life in the early hours of Friday, May 18, 2012 after a brief illness. He leaves behind many beloved family members and friends. Burt was the second child born to Homer and Edna Van Wagner, April 24, 1928 in Morenci, Michigan. Ionia, Michigan was his boyhood home until 1938 when his family moved to Los Angeles, California during the great depression. In June 1944 he joined the Merchant Marines. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp shortly afterward, completing basic training at Camp Pendleton. In 1946 Burt joined the all volunteer First Shore Battalion of the elite Pioneer China Marines. This unit is credited for saving the lives of countless Americans who found themselves behind enemy lines in China during the Japanese invasion. At the time of his discharge, Burt held the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, China Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. During his later years, Burt enjoyed attending several China Marine reunions and was proud to be recognized at a special event at Quantico last fall when the China Marines were honored. After the war, he moved to Kansas City with his first wife, Georgia Ann, where they together raised their three children. Burt retired from Bayer of Kansas City, MO in 1989. He began his career in 1956 as employee number 0122 when the company was first known as Chemagro. He held many positions over the years but spent the majority of his career in formulation and safety. During his retirement, he became an active member of the Kiwanis Club, Jacksonville Beach, FL chapter. He served as the club's president and was awarded the Hixson Award October 2001. He was most proud of his many years of involvement planning, preparing, and serving the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner to area residents. Burt leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Joan Van Wagner of Jacksonville Beach; his children, Sandy Van Wagner, John A. Van Wagner (Shawn) and Jeffery D. Van Wagner, all in the Kansas City area; step-daughter, Susan Merchant (Brian) of Ponte Vedra, FL; three sisters, Joan Gibbons, Besty Braley of CA and Katie Goldfuss of OR. Additionally he leaves 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Burt was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Richard Van Wagner and two step-sons, Michael Demmon and Jerry Demmon.
