CLASSROOM CORNER

As a reminder, the Team Leaders for each grade level will send home a special newsletter with items specific to their grade. We hope you enjoy the detailed newsletter!

MEDIA CENTER NEWS Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped facilitate both our Fall and Spring Book Fairs. This school year, we have added 533 hardback books to our book collection. For those parents who aren’t aware, when books have been checked out for more than 90 days, the computer system automatically marks them “lost” and assesses a fine. It is very important that books be returned and/or obligations are paid in a timely manner. These obligations remain with your child’s record. Lastly, please remember that any books that have been read since April 1st should be included in next year’s Reading Across Broward list. You can download forms on our PPE website. Please remember to record different titles on the list (books shouldn’t be duplicated). Also, it’s helpful if the exact title of the book is listed (i.e. instead of Diary of a Wimpy Kid #2, it should read: Rodrick Rules). Have a great summer and keep your children plugged into reading!

Upcoming: All grade levels are beginning the Family Life and Human Sexuality curriculum this month. We encourage you to preview the curriculum beforehand. VIRTUAL EDUCATION Florida Statute requires Florida school districts to offer a virtual program to students in grades KDG-12 using distance and online learning technologies. Students must meet criteria to qualify for enrollment. More information about virtual options can be obtained online at www.bved.net or by calling Broward Virtual School at 754-321-6050.

2017-2018 CLASS LISTS

Soon we will start forming classes for next year. Many factors such as reading levels, work habits, and behavior are taken into consideration when placing students in a particular class. For this reason, we do not honor teacher requests. If there is a compelling reason why your child cannot be with another child or in a particular class, please put it in writing to Ms. Gittelman by May 12, 2017. Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.

NEWS FROM THE CAFETERIA

The last day students will be able to bring in checks is Monday, May 1, 2017. The cafeteria will only accept cash or online payments using www.myschoolbucks.com. Please make sure to fill up those accounts before the deadline!

TAKE NOTE… GENERAL MUSIC NEWS

The Music Bee is here! During the month of May, all students in grades KDG-5th will take the Music Bee cumulative exam. The Music Bee test measures student mastery of Music NGSSS benchmarks for each grade. The student in each music class with the highest score wins a $10 Target gift card, and the top scorer in the school wins a $50 prize (donated by PPE PTA)! Since the Music Bee test covers a lot of material and counts as 33% of the 4th quarter music grade, Music Bee Study Sheets will be sent home with all students soon. Kids can also access the new digital study guide through Broward SSO, then click on Canvas and open their music course. Click the announcement and open the attachment. LOOKING FOR A GREAT ENRICHMENT SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR CHILD? Try MusicMakers! Summer Camp run by Mrs. Greggs June 19—July 21, 2017. Held at Coral Springs Charter School, this fun 5-week M-F program offers instruction in singing, keyboard, string instruments, percussion, woodwinds, and musical games. This summer’s themes are ”American Top” and “Disney ReMix!” Visit www.musicmakerscamp.com, call 954-868-5515, or see Mrs. Greggs for more information!

Research shows students do better when their parents are involved at home and at school. Grades are higher, test scores rise, self-esteem grows, and schools improve.

PTA VOLUNTEER SINCERE APPRECIATION

The PTA board would like to express our sincere gratitude to each and every one of you that volunteered this year to help at the PTA and the various school events. As they say "It takes a village" and this is no truer than within our school. This year was a great success because of our amazing volunteers! We encourage more parents to join our volunteer team. We must also say, “THANK YOU,” to the student volunteers from South Plantation High School for their continued involvement and support! Many of our events would not be possible without their support.

2017 STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK Staff Appreciation Week is the week of May 8th-12th. On Wednesday, May 10th, we will be holding our annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon. We need your help! Let’s show our wonderful teachers and staff how much we value the work they do with our children by sending in a dish in their honor. We are asking parents of students in Pre-KDG, Kindergarten to send in canned and small bottles of soda, water, iced-tea, etc., 1st grade to send in their favorite desserts, parents in 2nd grade to send in a breakfast item and parents in 3rd, 4thand 5th grades to send in lunch items. Drop off your donation to the front office on the morning of May 10th. A special goodie letter will be sent home the week before. Thank you in advance for your donations to our amazing staff!

2017-2018 PTA BOARD ELECTIONS Our last PTA meeting will be held Wednesday, May 10th at 6:30pm in the Media Center. It is time for the 2017-18 PTA Executive Board elections! According to PTA bylaws, a person can only hold the same position for two consecutive years. Most of our current board members have already fulfilled this term limit, and we need your help to find new officers. All of the positions are open - President, VP Membership, VP Volunteers, VP Hospitality, VP Fundraising, VP Technology, Treasurer, and Secretary. There are several opportunities for working parents and those who can volunteer during evenings and weekends. If you are interested in joining the PTA Board, please email [email protected] or [email protected] or fill out a form in the front office and leave it in the PTA Black Box. For more information about these positions or PTA, please visit our PPE PTA website at www.ppe.my-pta.org.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR 2017-2018

The PTA would like to use A+ School Supplies again next year. We are in need of a volunteer to help get everything set up for next year. We had a great turn out last year and several parents have requested to use this service again. Our teachers provide a list of supplies per grade that are needed to A+ School Supplies and then A+ School Supplies provides us with the list of supplies and the cost. You are able to order them online and the supplies will be delivered at our Meet and Greet. We need your help to make it possible to offer A+ School Supplies service. Please email Amanda at [email protected] if you are interested and need more information.

ESE SURVEYS The FL Department of Education Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Parent Surveys were handed out in February. The online version of the survey is also available to all parents at www.esesurvey.com. The deadline to complete either the paper or online survey is May 31, 2017.

TITLE I UPDATE During our next SAC Meeting on May 10th at 6:30pm in the Media Center, we will share Title I Survey results and ask for your participation in the review/development of the 2017-2018 Parent Involvement Plan. The Parent Involvement Plan establishes the expectations for parental involvement, describes how the school will implement a number of specific parental involvement activities, and how it will be incorporated into the schoolwide Title I School Improvement plan submitted to the Florida Department of Education. In addition, we will review and develop the school 2017-2018 Compact. This Compact will outline how parents, staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help children achieve the state’s high standards. Thank you for another productive year, David Apodaca, Title I Liaison.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWS The 2017-2018 DRAFT School Improvement Plan will be presented at next month's joint PTA/SAC/SAF meeting on May 10th. We appreciate those parents that completed the annual surveys for feedback to help our school. Please get involved with the great things going on at PPE. Special thanks to our SAC members who served this year, especially our Chair, Mrs. Hendrickx and Dr. Osgood, Intern Principal.
