By the time you read this, the 2005 MaverickRegion Club Race will be but a happymemory, and, in all likelihood, planning

will have started on the 2006 race. By allaccounts, our first Club Race using theMotorSport Ranch track was a huge success. I,again, want to extend a big thank you to Lanean, the sponsors, the national staff and all the many,

many volunteers that helped make the event possible. I will noteven attempt to name all the names for fear of forgetting someonewho genuinely deserves recognition.

Sixty-five club racers registered for the event. Theyranged in class from Mark Lopilato's super fast Sprint and Endurowinning GT1R to Joe McGlohen's slightly slower, but no less steadyMustard Racing “J” car. The ten rookie candidates were all success-ful in earning their rookie licenses. Nine of the ten were Mavericks.Congratulations to them all.

There were a couple of instances of contact, (to quoteKeith Olcha, “ask me how I know”) but on the whole it was safe, fun, and very competitive racing. In addition to the racers, therewere also 55 people registered for the Driver's Ed. Based on manyof the comments I overheard, we can count on some of those driv-ers moving into the club racer ranks in the future.

The weather started out on the damp side, but got pro-gressively better as the weekend unfolded. As the track dried, thetimes continued to come down. The really fast guys were in the1:15 range. For someone like me, who was happy to break into the1:25's, this seems like flying.

Even with the great shirts, good food, and outstandinghomemade ice cream, the event managed to turn a healthy profitfor our club. Again, this is a real tribute to Lanean and all the peo-ple involved with making the weekend such a huge success.

No doubt, it will be hard to top this next year; but, I'mconfident that the Mavericks will make it even bigger and better in2006. Hope to see you there!

cussion regarding if the Region should pay only if the other clubs pay orregardless of what the other clubs do. The decision was to pay our por-tion regardless of what the other clubs do. Joe McGlohen made themotion as such. Wendy seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Hope Shelter: Lanean Hughes – Hope Shelter received a $1000donation from a member who visited the shelter, and an additional $350from the charity laps at the May Club Race/DE. Although the foundationwas finished this week, the shelter is about 1.5 months behind scheduledue to weather, modifications to the building plans, and the busy sched-ules of Wade Kolody, Bill Middleton, and Justin Hiegel. All three have puta lot of time, energy, and expertise into the building of the new shelter. However, the shelter is in need of a new architect and construction engi-neers. Wade Kolody was the architect in charge of the plans. Wade andfamily are moving to Ohio. Bill and Justin are the construction engineersand are no longer able to spend as much time on the shelter due to othercommitments.

A request for assistance from an architect and constructionengineers will go out to the membership. Habitat for the Humanity hasbeen contacted for assistance, but cannot assist at this time. JoeMcGlohen made a motion to give $7500 to Hope Shelter. Jan Mayocommented that the Region just gave the shelter $10,000 from Paradeprofits.Wendy Shoffit commented that Jay Walker donated his $400 ClubRace Early Bird Special to the shelter. The Club Race held a drawing andthe name drawn won a refund of their entry fee. Jay won the drawing andrather than take the refund, donated the funds to Hope. The motion wasnever seconded or voted on.

Slipstream Advertising: Mike Brodigan – Statements will bemailed to the advertisers in early August. Advertisers with accounts pastdue will not be offered a renewal. The rates will stay the same. Mikewould like to include a direct link from the Maverick Region website tothe advertiser’s website for a fair and reasonable fee. It was suggested hetalk with Steve Boyd and the web master for Hill Country Region.

Photo Rally: Wendy Shoffit – The advertisement in the June SSshows the incorrect date. The published date is June 18, but the actualdate is July 23. There is another Photo Rally August 13.

Spring Tour: Andy Miller – The Spring Tour had 25 cars. Thecars were divided into two groups – novice and experienced. Dividing thecars into these groups worked well. The next trip is in the Fall. A requestwent out for someone to write an article on the event. Mark Gluck agreedto write the article.

Happy Hour: Dennis Chamberlain – HH at Hunan Dynastywas successful with 38 attendees. The next HH is at Mondo’s on June 16.

Slipstream Publication: Wendy Shoffit – There was a problemlast month getting the membership database to the mailhouse. This delayresulted in the late mailing of the SS. The issue is being addressed so theSS will arrive in a more timely fashion.

Father’s Day Picnic: Wendy Shoffit – approximately 10 peoplehave RSVP’ed. This year, the picnic is on Saturday not Sunday. She isexpecting late RSVP’s. Joel Nannis will handle concours prizes. Wendymade a motion to spend up to $300 for meat/drinks. Attendees will sup-ply side dishes. Joe seconded the motion. The motion carried.

President: Rocky wanted to hold an Executive Meeting at 5:30prior to the open Board Meeting, but no one showed up [The Secretaryis currently working on a project in Indianapolis]. The meeting was todiscuss the By Laws. Changes to the By Laws, as defined in Article 12,Section 1, require two-thirds vote of a quorum. A quorum is defined byArticle 6, Section 2, or Article 10, Section 4.

Next Board Meeting: Tuesday, July 5, at the home of Lanean Hughes.

The June meeting adjourned at 8:27pm.

Rocky Johnson hosted the June 2005 MaverickRegion Board Meeting on Monday, June 6, 2005.The meeting had the following 16 members in

attendance Executive Council: Rocky Johnson, MarkGluck; Board Members: Dennis Chamberlain, MikeBrodigan, Bill Dawson, Lanean Hughes, ChuckMachala, Joe McGlohen, Andy Miller, Joel Nannis,Wendy Shoffit; General Membership: Ed and Tracey

Gross, Kevin Hardison, Jan Mayo, Marie Wingfield. Rocky Johnson calledthe meeting to order at 7:05pm.

Co-Goodie Storekeepers and Social Chairs: Rockyannounced that over a couple of banana splits Ed and Tracey Grossagreed to take over the positions of Goodie Store and Social Chairs. Janand Wendy will help with the transition. As the new storekeepers, Ed andTracey would like to put the Goodie items on the internet for others toview and order through a link to Paypal.

Club Race: Lanean Hughes – The Club Race is over and wasvery successful. The Club Race was held in conjunction with a Driver’sEducation over Memorial Weekend (May 28-30) at MotorSport Ranch(MSR). Her report showed a profit of ~$8,700. The lunch charity lapsbrought in an additional $350. Lanean said Maverick Region was able tomake such a profit because “a lot happened” with the hotel, food, andtrack rental. For example, Jack (MSR Owner) gave more than normaland removed a lot of the fees. Lanean has received several e-mails fromClub Racers indicating they had a good time, despite the rain onSaturday. Nine of the ten Club Race Rookies were from Maverick Region.Lanean read the Club Race Steward’s Report. The Steward indicated MSRwas new to Club Racing, and was a good choice and a great facility – aSteward’s dream, if one doesn’t mind climbing a ladder to get into theTower.

Driver’s Education: Bill Dawson – During the DE portion ofthe Memorial Weekend event, there was metal to metal contact. This is afirst for Maverick Region at a DE. Both cars were drivable and no one wasinjured. The Hill Country Region DE is coming up on June 25-26. Teamleads will be contacting Maverick instructors.

AX/TT (Radios): Chuck Machala – There are problems withthe Motorola radios. Ray Luedecke tried to use them at the Club Race, but they failed. The Region needs to buy new ones.Although AX/TT gen-erally uses 10 radios, Chuck would like funds allocated to buy 12 radios(2 backup radios). He would like to buy ICOM brand radios. JoeMcGlohen expressed concern about switching to ICOM radios. First, ifthe current radios are replaced with newer Maxon radios, the same bat-tery packs and chargers can be used. Secondly, Lone Star Region usesICOM and has had problems with a 2-3 second delay after the talk but-ton is pressed – cause of the delay is unknown. Regardless as to whichbrand is ultimately chosen, Joe did not want his concerns to delay theallocation of funds during the current meeting.

AX/TT has made ~$6700 this year and Chuck wants to spend$2000 on new radios (~$152/radio). Wendy made a motion to allocateup to $3000 for new radios and new batteries. Lanean seconded themotion. The motion carried. However, prior to funds being spent, Rockyrequested all issues and concerns are resolved.

There was discussion about selling the Motorola radios on theinternet or through the Goodie Store. Of the old radios, the Region willkeep 4 radios and sell 6. Pricing and venue will be determined later.

AX/TT (Mineral Wells): Chuck Machala– Currently, GreggLee (S2000 club) has been using a donated street sweeper to clear theAX/TT course. He has asked the Region (in conjunction with other clubswho use the sweeper at Mineral Wells) to help with the operationalexpenses of the sweeper (fuel, tires, and maintenance). Gregg has askedthe Region pay ~30% of the $650 yearly cost (~$200/yr). There was dis-

This was our first happy hourat Hunan’s and luckily for us,they had just obtained their

liquor license the previous week! For the most part, the happy hourcommittee tries to select places with

reasonable prices, and in this regard Hunan’s was one of the bestever. We also had great service, which is often a challenge for agroup our size. We also had great food and a great view. Obviously,I really liked Hunan’s.

New members included Jennifer Dean and Mark Ovard, Judy

Kellnek, Gisselle Miranda (attending for the second time but her first

happy hour as a member) and Steve Lipkin. Jennifer and Mark are the

proud owners of four (yes, that is four) 928’s. One is kept mainly for

spare parts. Mark is a wedding photographer, when not performing

impersonations of Neil Diamond. See what you think from his photo.

For our July 21 happy hour we’re heading back to the Railhead

Smokehouse in Colleyville, another of our favorite hangouts. Hope to

see you there!

Porsche owners typically have a uniqueoutlook on life. Often, they are peoplewho demonstrate both performance and

passion, achieving high levels of excellencethrough their unique outlook, internal motiva-tion, life experiences and personal philosophy.Slipstream’s Passion and Performance segment

highlights these people.

Typically, this segment is dedicated to folks whoactually own a Porsche and drive it from time to time. Thismonth’s person of interest owns a Porsche (sort of) and pre-tends to drive it. If given the chance, he would gladly drive his911 but his feet can’t reach the peddles to break or accelerate. But it is not for a lack of trying, he just hasn’t grown legs longenough yet. Meet my 6 year old son Maxwell Holloway.

Every parent believes his or her kid has exceptionalskills and is blessed beyond compare. We are no different withour children for the most part. In our eyes they are the bright-est stars in the sky. Truth be known, they are just average kidswho we get a good laugh from, shed a tear for and completelyenjoy. I will say this for Max (and even his little sister Emma),they really like our old 911 Targa and would prefer we drive itwhenever possible. Max has every intention of racing it someday. And I am sure his little sister will want to do the same(just by judging how she operates her tricycle!). Recently weattended the Fathers Day Picnic at the Casey's where Max wastaken aback by all the Porsches. Even more so when he heardthere was a contest for the “nicest” one. The following is a con-versation Max and I had. He may just become a Concoursjudge someday.

MAX: Daddy, look at all the Porsches! There all dif-ferent. Why they all different?

DAD: Well lil buddy, it depends on what year theywere made and some are just different models but all are madeby Porsche.

MAX: Dad, which one do you like the bestest? I likethe orange one, no the black, no the red one way over there(Pointing to the Cross 356 - a very beautiful car indeed!).

DAD: Ya, that is a nice one. She looks to pretty closeto mint condition. You think we should go take a closer look?

MAX: (With saucer size eyes) Can we? What kind isit Dad? Is it fast like ours? Do he race it? Come on Dad! Stoptalking and lets go see it!!!

We walked over to the 356. Max peered inside and Iinstructed him not to touch it, only to look. He went aroundback and examined the engine.

MAX: Dad, his engine looks new! Did he get a newengine? Did you get a new engine? (screaming over to Mr.Cross). Dad, this car looks new. How old is it anyway?

DAD: It’s over 40 years old lil buddy. It has won prizesfor being so nice. Look at the awards. (Mr. Cross approachedus and told Max that he could sit in it if he would like. Maxwas a little skittish and looked at me for approval.)

DAD: It’s OK, you can sit in it just don’t touch anybuttons or levers. This is a Concours car, that means the ownerhas taken really good care of it and only brings it out for spe-cial times. Now when you get out, close the door using thedoor handle. (Best to teach him early on the proper way toclose a Concours door).

We then examined all the other cars. He had a toughtime deciding which one he liked the most. When we finished,Max wanted to sit in our car. He wouldn’t leave so instead offorcing the issue, I let him be. We have learned that when Maxhas strong feelings over something it is normally warranted. Ifound out what he was up to. He happened to notice that JoelNannas was judging the Casual Concours. Max had a lobbyand he wasn’t going to let Joel get away without pleading hiscase as to why ‘his’ Porsche should win.

Now mind you, our car was by far the roughest oneon the lot. We have great plans for it but in reality it had nobusiness being next to those beauties! It came time to pass outthe prizes. I could tell Max was nervous. It came down to thelast prize and Joel called out my name. I was awarded a can ofglass cleaner. It could have been a million dollars to Max. Henow knew which car was his favorite, his 1977 911 Targa. Hementions it everyday sense. Thanks Joel for letting Max believehe had the nicest car that day.

actually eat the infamous cheese cake. Unfortunately, he decided totoss us a curve and order the tiramisu instead…but much to hissurprise none was to be found that day. Rocky just had to settle forsomething with a lot of chocolate. It must have been good becausethose that had passed up dessert were now back tracking! MikeLockas must have a deal with Nancy as he was treated to the mys-tery meal of the day. Nancy had promised a delightful dish and itmust have hit the mark since there was little left on Mike’s platewhen the dishes were cleared. Charlie Davis provided the enter-tainment with his professional quality photos of cars as well as bugsand cacti; beautiful quality work that most would only see in photomagazines. Other entertainment included determining exactlyhow much salad dressing a girl could put in her hair. Thanks go toJasmine Shoffit for her apt demonstration. Thus we ended the nightin anticipation of doing it all over again, just backwards, the nextday.

The 15 May Time Trial was a reverse "Flat Out" with akink. The kink, a chicane in corner two, must have been destruc-tive to tires; there were a number casualties of the day. JamesShoffit wore out his tires ending his day. Brian Petri also managedto find a good view of the cords in some of his tires and ended upa bystander for the last set of events in the afternoon. More cata-strophic was Bob Kuykendall's de-rubberizing of his tire while oncourse. All were fine after a short full course red and a push backto the grid.

This event, Shelly Burbank driving “Christine,” had someclose friendly competition with Lisa Steele in her 944 Turbo. However, Shelly prevailed collecting the day's Fastest Time of Day(Ladies) for her efforts with a 85.000. Shelly’s car control is noth-ing less than impressive. Class 6 was once again the largest andmore tightly matched class. The top times were within 1 secondfrom first to third place. This time the 944 of Mark Steele, with an81.038, pulled the fastest time over the infamous Chuck Machala,Chief Driving Instructor.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the drivinginstructors for showing the way and giving those tips that reallymake a difference to the more novice drivers. Instead of being ableto check their tire pressures or rubbing out a body panel that some-how made contact with a cone, they hop into another car and puttheir welfare into someone else's hands. All appreciate it I am sure.

It was a dark and stormy night... at least it started that way thenight before a double header Time Trial at Mineral Ring 14-15May. Despite mixed weather forecasts, 27 drivers prepared for

the worst arriving early to slide on a water soaked course.Fortunately, the rain stopped, the sun peeked and I am here toreport on a high adventure Time Trial. Tannia and I were allowedto author this article based on a long-standing tradition that thenewest drivers submit a summary. At least that is what WendyShoffit told us.

The course on Saturday was 2b version 4.7. While thatdoes little to represent the course I submit the name as "Flat Out."At least that is how Richard Diller advised us to drive through thekinks. While most were not so brave, it seems Richard heeded hisown advice as he recorded the fastest time of the day with an80.089. The course was fast with only a few cones finding them-selves not in their original position having been assisted by anerrant fender.

There were a few hard fought battles to be the class win-ner. One of the closest was the Class 10 (914) contest betweenKevin Hardison and Brian Petri. While Kevin ultimately won, thedifference was a scant 1.1 seconds. The other close battle was actu-ally for 2nd and 3rd place in the OA class. The weapon of choicewas not a momentum car but more of a point and shoot car. Thewinner was Reb Burroughs in his ‘Vette’ but the action was betweenMichael Busby and Rich Evans. That Mustang battle was overflow-ing with great American Muscle Car sounds. The biggest Porscheclass was class 6 with a covey of Boxsters with car number 911entered to keep the Boxsters honest. Despite the large number, theyall finished within 5 seconds of each other.

Just a handful of the ladies made it out to enjoy in the funincluding Wendy Shoffit, Robyn Howard, Shelly Burbank andSusanna Kavanaugh. The top time of the day in the ladies class wasan 84.500 and went to Shelly sporting her newly revitalized purple911. The Saturday Time Trial was also given an English flavor withthe arrival of Randall Grasso's Lotus Elise. What a nimble car shelooks to be.

When all were exhausted from shagging errant cones anddriving our cars like they were meant to be driven, we assembled atBaris, a great Italian restaurant. Some of us wanted to see if theregion's president, Rocky Johnson (Car 619), would order and

Mineral Wells from my autocross days. Yes, backing out would beright at the front of their minds. Why were these guys nodding?

Saturday morning practice, and rain. It poured for hours. We were fortunate and soon after lunch, the rain stopped and the skycleared. The track dried and we were off again. Practice starts and afun race were planned and our red group was called to grid. Now, Ihave to admit that starting in the middle of the pack is interesting. Getlined up, look past the cars in front, try to spot the green flag drop-ping, listen for the roar, get on the gas and go. Into Big Bend, twoabreast, flat in third, look forward, backwards, and sideways. I was onthe inside and the only place there were no cars was on my left. Thereis grass there and I remember a past instructor saying, “The grass isyour friend.” Well, not today, Jose.

Into Big Bend, stay tight to the apex curb, accelerate hardinto the back straight, stay aware, and breathe. Mayhem, cars every-where and now fourth, and now Rattlesnake approaching at highspeed. Who is to my right? Don’t they know we can’t go through herethree wide? Stay on it and see who blinks. I have an exit if I need it,straight on, remember the grass. Now two wide, someone backed outand round we go, two wide and I have the outside at the entry and theinside at the top of the hill. We are through and now one wide for therest of Rattlesnake and up through Wagon Wheel?. Not too wide hereor some smart soul will be up on the inside, over the crest and flat intoRicochet. On towards Little Bend and there, a corner worker with ayellow flag. On the brakes and form up to do it all again. Probablytime to breathe again, smile, pat the dash and think of the past weeksbuilding this engine with friends. Great times and a great job.

The order for the next practice start had changed. BillMiller, #76, was in front of me and we were on the outside, a red 944on Bill’s inside. The flag dropped and we were off again. Flat into theturn. Suddenly the red car on Bill’s inside was sliding sideways and wehad a situation. Bill saw him and exited right. Three wheels on themud, two rears and a front. I was ready to go off but Bill caught it,calmly stayed with it and came back onto the track. Great vision andcar control, just another ho-hum moment. Covered me with a lightcoating of mud and that, for those of you who know the story, is whythe car needed to be washed, and we were off down the back straight. Most of those behind us never even lifted. Well done, Bill. Breatheagain.

The third practice start was without incident and we ran tenlaps as a fun race. During the fun race, I saw a different side of thegreat job our corner workers do for the club. I have always appreciat-ed these men and women for the job they do for the DE program. Werely on them, teach students the flags, stress the importance of obser-vation, ask the question, “What flag was being waved?” and at DEspeeds and in DE traffic it is vitally important. At racing speeds andin racing traffic I saw that it is more than vitally important. Thanks toall of you who look after us.

Alan Friedman was watching from the tower and so a cleanrace and a clean finish was high on the list of priorities. Fortunesmiled, there was the checker and it was done. Alan was right, racingis different. Sadly, back came the rain. The blue group practice startsand fun race went back to Sunday morning. The conversation at din-ner with my wife Rosemary, daughter Georgie, and future son-in-lawJames was racing. Strange.

Club Race Corner - Impressions from the Lefthand SeatBy Colin Graidage

There is a very good view of MotorSport Ranch (MSR) fromBuzzards Neck. As it rotated in front of me, there was time toreflect that I had just failed to realize a major objective for my

first club race.

It was lap 8 and I was just hanging on. James Shoffit wasahead and exiting the turn. I turned in and in very rapid successionthere was the apex curb, but I was aimed inside it, there the controltower, there the clubhouse, there the flag station with the yellow com-ing out; thank you. Back down the short straight, I saw Mike in theblack 944 Turbo. He had seen the flag and me and had room.Gracefully backwards, off the track again. Nice sky. I think I heard thevoice of Carey Spreen saying,“Don’t do that” and,“Both feet in” frommy first excursion in my first DE in February 2002. It was the samecorner. Poetic, really.

A wave from the corner station and back onto the track.Keep the mud off the line, listen to it shaking off the wheels, try notto spin the car with too much throttle, and into the hot pit for a quickcheck by Joel and our great National scrutineer team. Thanks guys, and off again. Not even breathing hard. Not the first time, after all.Well yes, actually, in a for-real PCA Club race.

Then it started to rain. The next few laps were ugly with carsslipping and sliding on and off the track. Richochet was extremely dif-ficult, the uphill turn into the Tombstone complex, and Big Bend wastreacherous. Some like to drive MSR in the rain, or so they say. Therain stopped, some grip came back and the game was on again. By theend of the race, the track was dry and there were some good battlesgoing on especially into Rattlesnake and out of Big Bend. Rattlesnakewas the “Who blinks first” spot and the exit from Big Bend rewardedthe best technique. Track out at Tombstone got closer and closer. Tooclose for some.

The weekend started on Friday, after all, with a test and tuneday. My rebuilt engine had zero hours on it after a mishap at TWS andso a first few tentative laps were required to bed in the new rings andsee if our work was as good as we thought it to be. We had good oilpressure, good temperature, it sounded good, felt good and therewere no oil leaks. Wonderful. By Friday evening and the orientationsession for license candidates, the engine had a little over an hour onit and felt ready. Was I?

Alan Friedman, National Official and Chief Steward for theweekend took the orientation session and handed out a helpful set of“dos and don’ts” to a group of ten, would-be racers. His message wasthis, “Racing is different. Club Racing is a National program. It is nota Maverick event, even though Maverick is hosting it. It is not DEmultiplied by a factor. Racing is different.” He stressed awareness, keeping track of other drivers, where they want to go, and where youneed to be. Speeds are higher, space is tighter, cars are closer, drivershave intentions that may be less than generous, lines are often differ-ent and frequently less than optimum. There is limited time to thinkabout driving the car. The driving part needs to become automaticand the thinking part has to be on strategy and tactics. It soundedgood.

Alan talked about the benefits of occasionally backing out ofsituations and co-existing on the racetrack. That seemed sensibleenough. Two of my co-aspirants, James Shoffit and Mark Steele werenodding in agreement. In my mind’s eye, I could see them both out at

Sunday morning saw practice, qualifying for the sprint race, and a drivers’ meeting. Alan handed out the pieces of paper we hadcome for and the candidates were officially licensed PCA Club Racersall welcomed noisily by the group. Okay, there is a cross on the backof the car, but who cares? Ms. Shire will be proud. So would my moth-er, but I daren’t tell her.

I qualified too well and that put me in among the quickpeople. For the future, that is not a good plan and a lower qualifyingposition will do just fine. These guys are fierce and the fun aspect ofit seemed less obvious. The start was tricky and I thought I wouldhave to test the grass as I was driven onto the red and white apex curbon the inside of Big Bend. It is nice up there but soon we were throughand off and the first few laps were fast and furious.

And so to Monday, and a great day for racing. Practice, qual-ify in a better, if lower place. And to the grid where Jan Mayo, BobBenson, he of the patriotic suspenders, and Graham Lane have every-thing under control except my breathing. Dick Dobson, ChiefScruitineer, and John Poor walk around the grid looking at the cars.Dick asks me if I am ready. I am. Bill Dawson is in the pace car andlooking for Jan’s sign. She signals, “start engines.” Bob starts to sendthe lead cars out and we are underway. Now, the Enduro is one hourwith a mandatory five minutes pit stop. I have never driven for onehour before and I wonder how this is going to work. Can I concen-trate for that length of time at these speeds? Will the cool shirt workfor that length of time or will it become a heater? Will the car last? Will

it rain? Did I remember to visit the restroom? Was Steve Kent right,am I too old for this? One lap and Bill Dawson in the pace car exitsthe track. The lead car takes us around and we form up two abreastthrough Tombstone. I am on the inside down the straight, look forthe flag, listen for the roar, floor it and let’s race.

The track was dry and the sun even tried to shine through. The racing was intense. At one point Doug Molny lost some oil andEric Erz spun on it in Rattlesnake. I got sideways on it as did manyothers and that after slowing down for the debris flag. It took a lap toget the oil off the tires and a new line through Rattlesnake for a lap ortwo helped. I needed to pace myself, not for the car’s sake but for myown. Just ease off a little and stay focused.

Noby and I were to share a pit wall place and I was to go inat 30 minutes, he at 40. Keith Olcha graciously agreed to check mytires, provide something to drink, and time my stop. The pit lane

speed is 30 mph, which seemed very slow and five minutes seemed aneternity. All done and we were off again. Now, I have to admit to hav-ing little idea of my position in the race and the pit stop just addedconfusion. Best to just drive and let ESPN worry about who waswhere.

There is a time for pacing oneself and a time to get on itagain so for the last fifteen minutes or so I picked up the pace andenjoyed some good racing with a number of cars. Just don’t try toohard. Time passed and I began to think a checker flag would be good.Three laps after that thought came to me there it was and we weredone. It is hard to describe the feeling. Relief? Yes, I suppose. Elation? Some, maybe. Wonder at how much faster than me many of these Fcars are? Yes, but that’s ok for now. Certainly, gratitude for the organ-ization that lets us do this and the individuals who make it possible.

Drivers waved to each other and to the corner workersthrough the cool down lap and there were those nice people at the pitwall again. Thank you, thank you. Back to the staging area for decom-pression and something to drink, some “did you see this?” and “whatabout that?” What a day. Started fourteenth finished thirteenth. Theimportant word there is “finished”. Does that car look happy to you?It certainly does to me.

Now, those of you who know me, know I am not fromaround here. That said, Rosemary and I count it a privilege to live andwork in the United States and consider Texas home and Maverick ourregion. To celebrate Memorial Day with you all was therefore a privi-lege and to remember those who keep us free and have given theirlives for that freedom is an important and honorable thing to do. Weget to live, sleep and race in a free country that is only free because assomeone said, “There are rough men willing to do violence on ourbehalf.” It is right to remember and honor them.

We also owe great thanks to PCA’s National Organization,Alan Friedman and his team. Our own Lanean Hughes, the greatarranger and putter to work of the willing. Thanks to our registrar,Ray Luedecke; the tech team: Dick Dobson, John Poor, and TomSnodgrass, the scoring team: Chuck Perilli, Nadeen Saville, MichaelWingfield, and Bob Glowacki; the grid team: Bob Benson, Jan Mayo, and Graham Lane; the hospitality team: Annette Snodgrass, ClaraLewis, and Wendy Shoffit. Thanks to the Linda Bambina, the voiceover the loudspeaker, the volunteer coordinator, Tracey Gross, JoeMcGlohen and his entire crew of corner workers, to all who workedin whatever capacity, to good friends and safe racers and to those wholove them. Thanks also to our generous sponsors. On a personal note, thanks to all the DE instructors who have helped me over the years.

So was the experience what I expected? What do you think?Oh yes, I was really happy that the car won the award for BestPrepared Race Car. Apparently, it was cleaner than some. Thanks tothe scrutineers for the award. In fact, thanks to all for a great weekendand if I have not mentioned your name, please forgive me.

We know of many eating establishments that cancharge an outrageous price for a meal becauseof their “atmosphere”. On Saturday night, May

7, the Maverick club met at one of the most famous “caratmosphere” restaurants in the area. All scrubbed upand clean, with cars on the rack in the background, stacks of tires in the corner, even the rich smell of motoroil in the air. What else could a car enthusiast ask for? Iknow, 30 Porsches in the parking lot, with every modelrepresented. From a trio of 356s to a Cayman (I liedabout that - try a new 996).

With plenty of cold drinks available, and aspread of that famous Babe’s Chicken, all that was lack-ing was the entertainment. After all had their fill ofchicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, salad, anddessert, we broke out the video projector and presentedthe History of the PCA. Starting in 1955 with only 7regions, the film took us to the current time with 140

regions in the USA and Canada. Also included was thehistory of the Porsche cars as each new model was intro-duced in the USA.

Of special note were the numbers of new facesin the crowd, as well as some we don’t see often enough. One example was a table-mate Khalid Zafar and his wifeSherry. Although having been Maverick members for 5years, this was their first Maverick event. We don’t thinkit will be their last.

Our thanks to all who helped make this a greattime to relax with friends, share a drink, break bread, and just have a wonderful evening. Special thanks to Edfor the effort in turning his shop into the best car atmos-phere restaurant in the Metroplex
