Cash Gifts Your cash, check or credit card gift to Books For Africa can be designated for a specific program or directed to where the need is greatest. All gifts are tax deductible, as specified by law. For your convenience, gifts by credit card can be made directly online at www.booksforafrica.org.

Matching Gifts Many companies match employee donations dollar for dollar to the charity of the employee’s choice. Check with your employer about matching your gifts to Books For Africa.

Wills and Other Planned Gifts Books For Africa can be named a beneficiary in your will and receive other deferred gifts such as life insurance. These gifts are not subject to estate taxes.

Gifts of Appreciated Stock Books For Africa and you can both benefit from gifts of stock (provided you have held the stock for 18 months or longer). You can eliminate capital gains taxes, avoid income tax on the gifted stock, and receive tax deductions for the full value of the stock.

Dear Friends,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for another outstanding year here at BFA! Your generous support in 2016 has allowed us to make great strides in fighting the African book famine. We are pleased to share with you some of what we achieved in 2016:

• We shipped books by the ton (yet again): BFA continues as the world ’s largest shipper of donated books to Africa, shipping over 37 million books to 49 African countries in our 28-year history. This has garnered us another “exceptional” 4-star rating from Charity Navigator (which named BFA the top U.S. charity under the Humanitarian Aid Category), and a Gold rating on the GuideStar Exchange. In 2016 alone, we shipped 2.4 million books, 154 computers and 62 e-readers valued at over $32 million to 25 countries. More than $2.5 million was raised in 2016 to ship these materials to Africa.

• We connected with recipients: 2016 kicked off with BFA site visits to Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. This included attending the Corporate Council on Africa annual meeting (in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), BFA founder Tom Warth’s walk across Zanzibar, and a Peace Corps site visit in Uganda (including a stop at the first library ever served by BFA)! BFA representatives also visited recipients in The Gambia, Malawi, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Ghana throughout the year. David Robinson, son of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, joined Tom on his walk across Zanzibar, then visited Minnesota in September to promote BFA and raise funds to deliver books to Tanzania. In addition to these site visits, we implemented an improved recipient feedback process and collected data, allowing us to identify success points of our current programs, and help pinpoint where we can improve our systems.

• We met the right people: We interacted with numerous members of the African diplomatic corps in 2016 to coordinate on activities. Her Excellency Oliver Wonekha, Ambassador of Uganda to the U.S., hosted BFA’s annual Summit Society reception at the Ugandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. In May, the Kenyan Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Robinson Njeru Githae, delivered a keynote speech at our annual fundraising luncheon emphasizing the critical role that books and literacy play in African development. Ambassador Githae also officially opened our new administrative office in St. Paul, MN during his visit. Our new Atlanta warehouse was formally opened with a dedication ceremony featuring South African Ambassador H.E. Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu. Our Minnesota warehouse hosted H.E. Wilson Masilingi, Tanzanian Ambassador to the U.S., to discuss ways to put high quality books in the hands of Tanzanian students.

• We met (even more of) the right people!: In addition to cultivating relationships with Ambassadors, we were honored to host 25 young African leaders from President Obama’s Mandela Washington Fellowship program, who volunteered at our Minnesota warehouse on Nelson Mandela International Day in July. We also established a partnership with Books For International Goodwill, a rotary-affiliated organization in Maryland, to put even more books in the hands of African students. In addition, presentations to the African diplomatic corps and the African Studies Association Annual Meeting in Washington D.C., as well as the American Library Association in Orlando, rounded out a great year of relationship-building.

• We are building for the future: With over half a billion children on the African continent, the need to put high-quality educational materials in the hands of tomorrow’s leaders is more pressing than ever. To make sure we can meet the ever-growing demand for books, we are building for the future. We moved to larger facilities in Georgia and Minnesota. We transitioned to a new, more robust donor database. We implemented website improvements to make our site more user-friendly for donors, volunteers, and recipients. We were excited to announce the launch of our e-reader program, with initial pilot sets going to recipients in East, West, and South Central Africa. With cultivated content specific to each region, the e-reader initiative will offer a unique opportunity to put African materials into the hands of students who are eager to read. Along with our improved feedback and evaluation process, this capacity building will accommodate future growth and allow us to better serve all of our partners.

In 2016 we worked hard to take things to a new level in order to end the book famine in Africa. Thanks to your support, the children of Africa will be able to pursue their dreams and lead their continent. This was the dream of Nelson Mandela, who stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” It is our dream-- and we know it is yours as well.
