First Reading: Ezekiel 2:2-5
Ezekiel is moved to respond to the call of God and to accentu-
ate his teaching with a direct reference to the Word of God.
Second Reading: II Corinthians 12:7-10
Paul had questioned the value of his suffering, and God replied,
“My grace is enough for you, for strength is made perfect in
weakness.” Paul then realized that although he was weak
against persecution, he was strong in faith.
Gospel: Mark 6:1-6a
Jesus could do little for those in his own part of the country, for
their lack of faith in him was so great. Therefore, he spent much
of his time teaching in neighboring villages instead.

We Learn Better When We are Happy Part Two
Last week I discussed The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor and how his research shows that approaching a task with positive thoughts makes us amazingly more successful. It activates all of our brain’s learning centers, it makes us more focused, it makes us happy. Shawn defined happiness as the joy we feel striving for our potential. This definition implies that happiness is not something you get externally, it comes from within you. Shawn’s research can impact all facets of our lives in amazing ways, but, last week, I suggested we imagine using this Happiness Advantage in how we approach the relationship that God offers each one of us. Our greatest joy, our greatest potential, our greatest happiness is found in the relationship that we have with God, who is at the source of us. Our relationship with God begins with faith. Faith is so much more than the baseline simple affirmations that God exists and the teachings of the Church are true. Faith is trust. It is active and dynamic. It increases and decreases in us every moment of every day when we strive to rise above that baseline. If someone tells you that their faith does not fluctuate, then I would argue that they are in the simple affirmation group. Yes, it is very difficult to fail in that group, but it is also very difficult to strive for our potential relationship with God. Thomas Merton said in Thoughts in Solitude, “My Lord God,…I believe that the desire to please you does, in fact, please you.” The desire to please God is active and dynamic, it shows trust and faith, and it is the only way to grow in relationship with God, the only way to strive for our potential. Without this desire, we are reduced to those simple affirmations. Can you think of anything that would make you happier than to KNOW that God is pleased with you? Meditate on that for 10 sec-onds! So how do we use Shawn’s Happiness Approach to grow in our relationship with God? Begin every faith encounter with a desire to please God and recall the joy you just felt when you meditated on how that would please Him. Desire to please Him when you walk into Mass. Desire to please Him when you come forward for Eucharist. Desire to please Him when you pray before meals. Desire to please Him when you study for a big test. Desire to please Him when you listen as your spouse talks about their day. Desire to please Him when you are overwhelmed by tears. Desire to please Him when you correct the behavior of your children. Desire to please Him when you open the scriptures and read the first passage you see. Desire to please Him when you are swamped with work and someone stops by to chat. Desire to please Him when you have no desire to please Him. In these moments, the lessons that God wants us to learn from these faith encounters will be met by a mind that is happy, a mind that is experiencing the greatest joy we can feel as we strive for our potential relationship with Him.
. Peace,
Dcn. Andrew

Thank You from Little Sisters of the Poor
On behalf of the Little Sisters of the Poor and our Residents here
at St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly, I would like to thank you
and your parishioners for the donations amounting to $3,159.00
in response to our recent Door Collection at Saint Patrick
Church.
Jesus promised that we will always have the poor with us. But he
went even further than that, identifying himself with the poor:
“Whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did
for me. Seeing Jesus in those who suffer is a matter of faith;
loving them is a measure of our love for God himself. We ask the
Lord to give us eyes of faith and hearts ready to love him in the
poor.
The Little Sisters of the Poor and our Residents truly appreciate
the friendship and support from you and your parish community
to the Little Sisters mission of serving the elderly. May God bless
you all.
We will keep you and your parishioners in our daily prayers.
Monthly Masses are also offered in all our Homes throughout the
world for the intentions of our Friends and Benefactors.
Gratefully yours,
Sister Lorraine, l.s.p.

MUSIC MINISTRY
Christmas in July
July is the month when many music ministers, music teachers, and choral directors plan their Christmas concerts. The annual joint Advent-Christmas concert performed by St. Patrick and Christ the King Churches is being planned at this time! This year's theme is "A Renaissance Christmas." Renaissance means "rebirth," or "reawakening." During the Re-naissance period of history, culture was enlightened with a re-newed enthusiasm for thought, knowledge, and artistic expres-sion. We often think of that period as coming out of darkness, into the light. Sound familiar? That is one of our themes during the season of Advent, when we look forward to the light that Christ brings. Like the meaning of "Renaissance," we experience the cycle of Christ's birth (like rebirth) every Christmas. Our Renaissance Christmas concert will include stunning music from the Renaissance period, as well as recent music with the themes of reawakening faith and coming into the light of Christ. You might be surprised to know that some of our well-known tra-ditional carols originated during the Renaissance! We are seeking someone with experience in dance--even better, Renaissance dance--who might be willing to help us with dance steps for two of our songs. If you think you might be able to help, please contact Maggie Hanson at the church office. Blessings, Maggie Hanson Music Minister
With the arrival of the warmer weather and summer vacations, Mass attendance, as well as our availability of communion minis-ters goes down. We will therefore not be scheduling ministers to go to the balcony during the summer months. While you are still most welcome to go up to the balcony to sit, you may want to consider this when choosing your seat, and choose to stay on the main floor. It is also cooler on the main floor. People with health concerns are also asked to consider this with the arrival of the warmer temperatures.
