Reflections on Our Faith ~ Reflexiones en Nuestra Fe

El mes pasado pase una semana de mis vacaciones en la pequeña ciudad de Park City, Utah. Y lo que comenzó como un tiempo de descanso pronto se convirtió en una aventura. Aunque esta era mi primera vez en Utah, decidí no agregarle un GPS al coche rentado (ni manejo en Indio sin mi GPS) y después de manejar solo cinco minutos en las carreteras de Utah, me di cuenta que no tenía ni idea de donde estaba o a donde iba. Sabia a donde quería llegar, pero no como llegar. El crear un Plan Pastoral bien definido es como un GPS para la iglesia—no solo nos informa el destino deseado, sino que nos ayuda a llegar allí también. Al redactar un

Plan Pastoral apropiado, podemos comenzar a ver donde estamos y donde queremos estar—crear metas de corto y largo plazo. Hacer un Plan Pastoral no es simplemente buscar problemas que deseamos que cambien o desaparezcan, sino que requiere que veamos nuestra realidad (lo bueno y lo malo) para así poder crear maneras de alcanzar nuestros ideales. Nuestra meta final debe ser intimidad con Dios, pero para llegar a esto debemos primero comprometernos al culto verdadero y especialmente a la Fuente y Cima de nuestra Fe—el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa.

Viviendo Nuestra Fe a través del Culto Divino (2 Timoteo 1:1-3)

En su carta a Timoteo, Pablo dice: “Doy gracias a Dios, a quien, como mis antepasados, rindo culto con una conciencia pura...” (3). En el griego original, Pablo usa la palabra latreuo (λατρεύω; culto o servicio dedicado a Dios) para recordarnos que la adoración nos debe incitar al servicio de Dios en gratitud por Su amor. La única razón para celebrar cualquier liturgia (de la palabra latreuo)—y especialmente la Santa Misa—es el agradecer a Dios. El adorar y rendirle culto a Dios no es una obligación de una hora cada semana, es un compromiso continuo. Es la responsabilidad de todos asegurar que nuestras liturgias—y en especial la Santa Misa—están centradas en Dios, y no nosotros, para poder sentir su presencia y responder con generosidad a nuestro llamado a ser discípulos.

Para poder renovar nuestra Visión del Culto Divino tenemos que primero demostrarle más respeto y devoción a los lugares sagrados donde Dios habita: nuestra parroquia, nuestro hogar y nuestras vidas. Unidos por la alianza de la Cruz, y en el Espíritu de Corresponsabilidad, todos debemos cooperar en convertir nuestra parroquia en un hogar vibrante y acogedor para toda persona—sin diferencia de cultura, generó, idioma, posición económica, ideología o conocimiento de la fe—sin disminuir nuestras creencias y fidelidad a la Sagrada Tradición (el Deposito de la Fe, la Sagrada Escritura y el Magisterio de la Iglesia). Nuestra celebración central—la Santa Misa—debe tomar en cuenta la cultura popular para poder así traducir las Verdades Eternas de nuestra fe en conceptos que reflejan nuestra vida cotidiana pero manteniéndonos fieles a la autoridad absoluta de la Iglesia. Manteniendo la vista fija en Jesucristo, nosotros—los fieles parroquianos de Our Lady of Perpetual Help—tenemos que dar generosamente de nosotros mismos (nuestro tiempo y talentos a sus ministerios y nuestros recursos financieros a su solvencia económica) para poder transformar nuestra parroquia y nuestro compromiso al culto divino en una relación vivificadora con Jesucristo.

During my vacation time last month, I spent a week in the small ski-resort town of Park City, Utah. And what began as a quiet escape quickly became a real adventure. Although this was my first time in Utah, I opted against a GPS with my rental (I don’t even drive around Indio without a GPS) and within five minutes of driving the Utah Highway System, I came to realize I had no clue where I was or where I was going. I knew where I wanted to be, but how to get there was another story. Having a well-defined Pastoral Plan is like a GPS for the Church—it not only states our desired destination, it gives us the roadmap for the journey. By having a good Pastoral Plan in place, we can begin to take stock of where we are and where we want to be—our short- and long-term goals. Formulating a Pastoral Plan isn’t about simply stating problems in hopes of some future resolution, it requires that we look at our reality (the good and the bad) and create ways of reaching our ideals. Our ultimate goal must be intimacy with God, but to achieve this we must first make a commitment to true worship, and most especially the Source and Summit of our Faith—the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Living Our Faith through Christ-Centered Worship (2 Timothy 1:1-3)

In his letter to Timothy, Paul says: “I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did...” (3). In the original Greek, Paul uses the word latreuo (λατρεύω; worship or service to God) to remind us that worship must be a call to serve God in gratitude for His love. Every liturgical event (from the word latreuo)—and most especially the Holy Mass—cannot be anything but our offering thanksgiving to God. Worship is not something we do once a week for an hour or so, it is a lifelong commitment. We must ensure that every liturgical service—and especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—is centered on God, and not ourselves, so that we can experience God’s presence and respond generously to our call to Discipleship.

In order to renew our Vision for Worship, first we must show greater honor and devotion to the sacredness of the places where God dwells: our Church, our homes and our lives. United by the covenant of the Cross, and in the Spirit of Stewardship, we must all do our part to make our Church a more vibrant and welcoming home for all those called to our door—regardless of culture, gender, language, socio-economic position, ideology, or knowledge of faith—without compromising our core beliefs and our faithfulness to Sacred Tradition (the Deposit of Faith, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church). Our central celebration—the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—must always be in tune with the language of the culture in order to translate the timelessness of Truth into concepts that speak to our everyday lives without compromising the absolute authority of the Church. With God as our center, we—the faithful parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help—must generously give of ourselves (our talents and time to her ministries and our financial resources to her sound sustainability) in order to transform our church and our commitment to worship into a true and life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ.

Living between Love and Fear ~ Viviendo entre el Amor y el Temor

by Mary Ann Otto I’m involved in a small group. We’re reflecting on Father Robert Barron’s The Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Lively Virtues. The beauty of this process is that we are called to a change of heart. The challenge of this process is that we are called to a change of heart. Father Barron begins by suggesting that the polar opposite of love is fear. He suggests we are unloving because we are afraid of losing control, of others having more prestige, more possessions and of not accomplishing personal goals. Father Barron describes love as: “Allowing ourselves to be conduits of God’s divine love.” We are called to delight in each other’s hopes, dreams, gifts and successes. Parallels can be made between love, fear and our ability to be stewards. Each day we make decisions either grounded in love or fear in regards, for example, to matters such as the depth of our gratitude, the time we make for prayer, the extent to which we are willing to offer our talents in service, and the extent to which we share generously of our treasure. In light of this, I decided to do a self-check and reflect on where I fall between these two polar opposites of love and fear. The fear side of me suggests that I love and trust myself first, live independently and make self-actualization my goal. As a person of fear, I am afraid I might be less and have less. On the love side of this love-fear balance, I have placed my trust in God. My commitment to prayer and the work of the Holy Spirit are key components. Love would be the measure of my success. I would live life in gratitude, in relationship with Jesus, serve wherever I’m called and give generously of the treasure. I truly want the best for others and I want to do something about it! So where am I between love and fear? Let’s say I am intentionally traveling on the highway toward authentic love and take less off ramps than when I was younger. I know my road will end in front of the Master one day where perfect love exists. I hope that my life as a steward will reflect that I was “leaning into” the love side of the love-fear continuum all along.

A la luz de esto, he decidido hacer una auto-revisión para ver hacia dónde me inclino en estos dos polos opuestos del temor y el amor. El lado del temor sugiere que yo me amo y confío en mí misma primero, vivo independientemente y hago la actualización de mi propia meta. Como persona de temor, yo tengo miedo de ser menos y de tener menos. En el lado de este equilibrio del amor-temor, yo he establecido mi confianza en Dios. Mi compromiso a la oración y el trabajo del Espíritu Santo son componentes importantes. El amor debería ser la medida de mi éxito. Debería vivir la vida en gratitud, en amistad con Jesús, servir dondequiera que sea llamada y dar generosamente de mi tesoro. ¡Yo quiero verdaderamente lo mejor para otros, y quiero hacer algo al respecto! Three Minute Liturgical Catechesis ~ Catequesis Litúrgica en Tres Minutos

Ar cle 2: A Royal Priesthood Most Catholics are aware that we cannot celebrate the Eucharist without a priest. While this no doubt makes priests feel needed, it can have an unfortunate side effect. Some mes it leads us to think of the Mass as something that the priest does for the rest of the church. In fact, the Mass is something that we all do together. We need a priest to lead us, but he needs us to worship with him, too. The first part of the Roman Missal, called the General Instruc on, says that “the celebra on of the Eucharist is an ac on of the whole Church.” It goes on to say that the people who gather for Mass form “the People of God, purchased by Christ’s Blood, gathered together by the Lord, nourished by his word. It is a people called to bring to God the prayers of the en re human family, a people giving thanks in Christ for the mystery of salva on by offering his Sacrifice. Finally, it is a people made one by sharing in the Communion of Christ’s Body and Blood. Though holy in its origin, this people nevertheless grows con nually in holiness by its conscious, ac ve, and frui ul par cipa on in the mystery of the Eucharist” (#5). We've heard that term a lot in recent years, haven't we? “Full, conscious, ac ve par cipa on by all the people” in the Mass—that's what the Second Va can Council in the 1960's called the “aim to be considered before all else” (CSL, # 14) in the reform and promo on of the liturgy. The council was so concerned about this because it recognized that this kind of par cipa on “is the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Chris an spirit.” It is by our taking part in the offering of the Mass that we are to become more and more like Christ. It is our primary path to holiness. The council fathers insisted such par cipa on is our right and duty by reason of our bap sm, because through bap sm, we have become “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy na on, God's own people” (1 Pet. 2:9). We all share in the priesthood of Christ, and it is Christ who offers his sacrifice to the Father whenever Mass is celebrated. Thus the council said this full par cipa on is “called for by the very nature of the liturgy.” All the bap zed form Christ's body, and it is the whole Christ, head and members, who offers the sacrifice of the Mass. Perhaps one of the most important things we might learn from this Year of the Eucharist is the importance of the assembly at Mass. Some mes we think that our presence or our par cipa on doesn't ma er much. But each one of us is important to the celebra on of the liturgy. We each have a role to play that no one else can do for us. Only together can weoffer God proper worship. Let us all li up our voices and our hearts to the Lord as we share in Christ's sacrifice.

Ar culo 2: Un Sacerdocio Real La mayoría de los católicos sabemos que no podemos celebrar la Eucaris a sin un sacerdote. Esto puede hacer sen r indispensables a los sacerdotes, pero también ene efectos secundarios lamentables. A veces nos hace pensar que la Misa es algo que el sacerdote hace para el resto de la Iglesia. En realidad, la Misa es algo que todos hacemos juntos. Necesitamos un sacerdote para que presida, pero él nos necesita para que celebremos con él. La primera parte del Misal Romano, conocida como la Ordenación General, dice que “la celebración eucarís ca es acción de toda la Iglesia". Y con núa diciendo que la gente que se reúne para la Misa es nadie menos que "el Pueblo de Dios, adquirido por la sangre de Cristo, congregado por el Señor, alimentado con su Palabra; pueblo que ha recibido el llamamiento de encauzar hasta Dios todas las pe ciones de la familia humana; pueblo que, en Cristo, da gracias por el misterio de la salvación ofreciendo su sacrificio; pueblo en fin, que por la comunión de su Cuerpo y Sangre se consolida en la unidad. Y este pueblo, santo ya originariamente, crece de con nuo en san dad por la par cipación plena, consciente y ac va en el misterio eucarís co." (#5) Tal vez hemos escuchado esas palabras con bastante frecuencia en los úl mos años: "Par cipación plena, consciente y ac va… de todo el pueblo cris ano" en la Misa –eso fue lo que el Concilio Va cano II en la década de 1960 dijo que había "que tener muy en cuenta esta plena y ac va par cipación de todo el pueblo” de donde proviene todo lo demás" (CSL, # 14), y que había que buscarse en la reforma y promoción de la liturgia. El concilio estaba muy interesado en esto porque reconoció que este

po de par cipación "es la fuente primaria y necesaria de donde han de beber los fieles el espíritu verdaderamente cris ano". Es cuando tomamos parte de la ofrenda de la Misa que nos conformamos más y más con Cristo. Es el camino principal hacia la san dad. Los padres del concilio insis eron que tal par cipación es nuestro derecho y deber por razón de nuestro bau smo, porque mediante el bau smo somos "una raza elegida, un reino de sacerdotes, una nación consagrada, un pueblo que Dios eligió para que fuera suyo" (1 P 2:9). Todos par cipamos en el sacerdocio de Cristo y es Cristo quien ofrece su sacrificio al Padre cada vez que la Misa se celebra. De modo que el concilio dice que esta plena par cipación es "la naturaleza de la Liturgia misma". Todos los bau zados forman el Cuerpo de Cristo, y es el cuerpo completo, cabeza y miembros, quien ofrece el sacrificio de la Misa. Quizá una de las cosas más importantes que podemos aprender en este Año de la Eucaris a es la importancia de la asamblea en la Misa. A veces pensamos que nuestra presencia o nuestra par cipación no son muy importantes. Pero cada uno de nosotros es indispensable para la celebración de la liturgia. Cada uno de nosotros ene un papel que nadie más puede desempeñar. Solamente juntos podemos ofrecer a Dios el culto debido. Levantemos todos nuestras voces y nuestros corazones al Señor mientras par cipamos en el sacrificio de Cristo.
