Off the Bench

Whether you have realized it or not, each month’s worship themes have built upon one

another. In May, we identified six different life stages and discussed the characteristics unique to each one. In June, we discovered our spiritual gifts, learning to appreciate the ways with which God has created each of us, and hopefully appreciating some of the differences that exist

amongst the Body of Christ. These past two months have given us tools to help us become more aware of who we are and where we’re at in the grand scheme of life. The only question

remaining is, “so what?”

Dr. John V. Tornfelt was my academic advisor in seminary. He also taught the preaching

courses. He is one of the most straightforward yet compassionate men I’ve ever met. His high regard for the ministry of communicating the Word is unrivaled. His dry, sarcastic wit and wry

sense of humor would open my heart to the breeze of God’s Spirit like an open window on a cool, Spring day drenched with sunshine. I learned so much about the art of preaching from him. One of those lessons was very simple, yet extremely important: don’t ever forget to

answer the “so what” question.

You may have determined that you are in the first half of life, fully engaged in the warrior

phase, fighting for something just, righteous, and beautiful. You may have determined that you possess the spiritual gift of prophet. Maybe you’ve learned to appreciate your place as a

sage in the second half of life, and perhaps you’ve begun to understand your gift as a giver.

But the question becomes, and has always been, and will always be, “so what?”

For those of us who are asking the “so what” question, July will be a month when we discuss specific ways of converting our knowledge to action. July will be about getting “off the bench,”

“off the sidelines,” and maybe “out of the penalty box” in order to really compete and play the

game that matters most – the game of life.

Ultimately it matters little how much we know; what matters is how we put feet to our faith. When Jesus first called out to his disciples, he did not begin filling their minds with all sorts of

commands. He did not begin lecturing them about the rules and regulations of the Kingdom. Rather, he simply said “follow me.” Walk where I walk. Do what I do. Experience the fullness of life, with its many turns, twists, hills and valleys with me. Your faith is meant to be lived,

not simply learned.

Our faith is not merely an exercise of learning. It is meant to be lived, practiced, and thoroughly experienced from the inside out. James, the brother of Jesus, emphasized this in his epistle. He writes, “But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive

themselves. 23For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves* in a mirror; 24for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget

what they were like” (James 1:22-24 NRSV). Please join us this month as we discover ways to become more of a “doer of the word” – to get “off the bench” – by immersing ourselves in the

action of God’s Kingdom!

Your teammate in Christ,

Rev. Kenneth A. Stewart

March Dedications Thank You

Greene Street, I want to thank you and the church for the prayer shawl which you gave to my mother Juanita. Thanks for visiting and showing your care at this trying time. My mother got moved to Koester Pavilion. I hope and pray she will find comfort there. Again thank you and I feel so blessed to have such a caring church family. Sincerely, Dave Vosler

Dear Greene Street, Thank you! Thank you! The prayers, the kind words and the many generosities such as the donation and healing thoughts of your congregation have helped us and our son stay strong though what I call “A Marathon Rollercoaster”. Fear, thrills, excitement (when counts are high), nausea and a wish to get off before its over. There really are not words for this generosity you have shown us all the way in Oregon, but please know that it has meant so much to us. Love, The Shobes

“Thanks for your support and uncondi-

tional love throughout my life. I know I

have been, at one time, a major pain in the rear;

but thanks to everyone who dealt with it. I'm

sorry, and once again, for those of you who've

known me for the majority of my life, I'm not

done growing yet. And thank you for everything.

The 45th West Ohio Annual Conference was called into session by Bishop Palmer and worship on the theme on “our blessedness” began. As always, the worship services each day and the offering of the communion elements to over 2500 clergy, laity, and guests were inspiring.

Bishop Palmer shared four challenges to the churches of West Ohio: 1) Of the 1038 churches in our conference, 44% had no baptisms and 51% had no professions of faith in 2013. He encouraged us to go out into our communities and bring the un-churched into our church families. (We had both baptisms and new members brought into our church just a week ago.); 2) He hopes we will get involved in the Freedom Schools project. (Our partnership with Springcreek Elementary School follows a similar format to the Freedom Schools.); 3) Become an active participant in some type prison ministry. (Faye Oaks has asked for our participation in the past.); And 4) Begin to talk about and come to closure on our position regarding divisive issues within the global United Methodist Church, perhaps joining in the Circles of Grace discussion group.

Educational programming was led by the Rev. Eric Law and followed a theme of Holy Currencies—things that can be exchanged or shared with others. While money may come first to mind, truth, wellness, relationship, gracious leadership, and time and place are all also considered currencies. Each of these plays a role in building our communities and, therefore, in sustaining our churches.

Our Legislative Recommendations numbered just six this year. Each was well-documented and presented; five passed. Those recommendations were: Council on Finance& Administration; Conference Office Building Purchase; Commission on Equitable Compensation; Nondiscrimination; and Board of Pension and Health Benefits. Election Reform was withdrawn to be addressed later. The Rules Committee Report was approved and the Nomination Committee Report was accepted.

Lakeside continues to offer a tranquil atmosphere; it is a great place to ‘re-charge one’s batteries.’ It is also a place to re-connect with friends from Greene Street’s past like Chip and Bev Koch, Jon Morgan, Joe Payne and Lisa Ellison. Maggie Sykes, Ann Baird and Mary Pierce were also around anxious and to hear about Martha Fraley and Nancy Woods.

Various reports are available in the Office if you would like more information.

From the Pantry We have been blessed to partner with Agape Outreach (www.agapeoutreach.org). Agape Outreach is an organization founded by Joe Kampers, a nondenominational minister, in 2000. One of the many ways they help others is delivering bread to needy families. They do not get government assistance for this service - as the program is funded completely by donations. In addition, the use of personal time and personal vehicles is used to transport the bread. Through their generosity, they have agreed to partner with the Greene Street Food Pantry donating, on a monthly basis, approximately 17 trays of bread, buns, donuts, bagels, etc. Our local contacts are Darryl and Mary Rettig. We are truly blessed by this organization and their willingness to share in their vision of feeding the hungry. June is cereal month! Your cereal donations are greatly appreciated. The Food Pantry Committee to give special thanks to Joan Beck for the endless (and sometimes thankless) hours of dedication she has put in to making the Food Pantry a success. God is leading Joan to new challenges and will no longer be a member of the Food Pantry Committee. We wish her the very best in her new endeavors. On behalf of the committee,

THANK YOU Joan for everything. You will be dearly missed.

Daycare News

As a reminder we are still taking registrations for the fall preschool program. The first

payment is due July 1st. There is still space available in all the preschool classrooms.

In-spite of the rain we are still having a wonderful summer. We have gone to the Piqua City pool and skating rink. We have

traveled as far south as Dayton to the metro parks and Aullwood Farm. We have traveled

west to Columbus zoo, south to Vandemark Farms and east to Englewood Mentor Park.

Please continue to pray for safe travels as we take the children out for new experiences each day.
