1 WE CREATE A MORE DYNAMIC BUSINESS CLIMATE Success leads to success. The more
prosperous businesses we have in the Comox Valley, the more the local climate will encourage other entrepreneurs to set up businesses and create still more jobs.
2 WE GAIN MORE PROPERTY TAXINCOME TO INVEST IN OUR INFRASTRUCTURE
The more thriving businesses we have, the more they will be able to expand. The more they expand, the more property and business tax they will pay, generating money that can be used for the good of our Valley and our citizens.
3 WE IMPROVE SERVICES A prosperous local economy is con-
ducive to improvements in social, medical, and sports and leisure ser-vices, as well as in tourism, the arts, and entertainment.
4 WE HAVE MORE CHOICE ANDA WIDER VARIETY OF PRODUCTS
The sales fi gures of a business refl ect its fi nancial health, and when busi-ness is good, expansion projects mul-tiply. Expansion brings new products and new services to our community.
5 WE BENEFIT LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS Non-profi t organizations receive
many donations from local business people. Donations are essential to their survival, so it follows that the healthier the economy, the healthi-er our organizations.
6 WE MAINTAIN THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF OUR VALLEY AND REGION
The charm of a municipality is in its dynamism and character. Those go hand in hand with its economic health. A municipality that can count on its population to buy locally is a muncipality to be envied.
7 WE CREATE MORE JOBS IN OUR VALLEY AND REGION
A thriving job market depends on the economic health of our region.
8 WE HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Local enterprises purchase a lot
more local products, greatly reduc-ing the transportation of products from outside the region.
9 WE SUPPORT OUR REGION IN THE SEARCH FOR INVESTORS If our region has a dynamic economy,
it is bound to attract investors. If our municipalities receive revenues from business and property taxes, they can work to attract investors as well. Investors are like consumers: they are attracted to regions that are attractive!
10 WE INVEST IN OUR REGION For all the reasons listed above, buy-
ing local is logical, benefi cial, and highly effi cient. Buying local creates the economic leverage that is vital to the dynamism of a region. By working together we can support our local economy.

COMOX VALLEY RECORD MARKET DAY Wednesday, July 18, 2012 9
10 Wednesday, July 18, 2012 MARKET DAY COMOX VALLEY RECORD
Downtown Courtenay streets will be filled this Sat-urday (July 21) from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with wonderful things to do during the 42nd annual Market Day.
As the Downtown Courte-nay Business Improvement Association notes, “You’ll find handmade, one-of-a-kind products along with some of the best deals from favourite downtown shops. The streets will be brimful with over 100 vendors, some of the Comox Valley’s very best. There is something for everyone to do and enjoy!”
In conjunction with Mar-ket Day, the Local Colours Festival of Arts and Culture happens July 20 and 21, also in downtown Courtenay. The seventh annual event com-bines the talents of local artists working in a variety of media creating works July 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and July 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All participants are from the Comox Valley. Paint-ers, photographers, carvers, potters, weavers, sculptors, videographers, dancers, musicians, singers, actors, and other artists, artisans and craftspeople will create, perform and demonstrate
their talents.On Saturday, the visual
artists will be joined by a variety of performing acts on two stages. The main Comox Valley Community Arts Council (CVCAC) stage will be at the corner of Fifth Street and England Avenue and a second stage will be set up in the Sid Williams Theatre plaza.
There is also music planned for the Fourth Street square. As well, dem-onstrations will be put on by the local potters’ club, the Comox Valley Art Gallery on Duncan Avenue has tons of art activities scheduled on the plaza and the Comox Valley Writers’ Society has a theatre café planned.
Surprise street perfor-mances will show up unex-pectedly, and there will be fun activities for kids, along an arts theme. A vendor fair of local crafts people, arti-sans and home-based busi-nesses will integrate with the merchants of downtown merchants during the 42nd annual Market Day to cre-ate an unforgettable shop-ping experience.
You’re welcome to help celebrate our community and experience the extraor-
dinary talent that the Comox Valley has to offer.
“We have extraordinary talent in our midst, here in the Comox Valley,” says CVCAC board member Bobby Herron.
“It’s really worth a look and a listen.”
Local Colours highlights the positive impact arts and culture have on community, and demonstrates the sound business sense of supporting our local talent.
The connection between the DCBIA and CVCAC will increase the visibility of arts and culture in our commu-nity and will bring in specta-tors who would not normally attend or have access to such cultural opportunities, says Herron.
The festival will connect our local residents and help to define our community’s capacities as an arts and culture-producing centre. “It’s a free event with huge benefit for our community. We have packed the ros-ter with a ton of activity. Make sure to check out the schedule and add it to your planned activities for the summer,” says Dallas Ste-venson, CVCAC executive director.
She notes that the arts council greatly appreciates “the amazing support” from the downtown business community, the DCBIA and the people who volunteer their time to put the event
together.For more information,
check out the CVCAC web-site at www.comoxvalleyarts.org or send an e-mail to [email protected].
This project has been sup-
ported by the Building Com-munities Through Arts and Heritage Program, Depart-ment of Canadian Heritage and the Downtown Courte-nay Business Improvement Association.
MARKET DAY offers an unforgettable shopping experience in downtown Courtenay.
