OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF WINNERS CIRCLE RUNNING CLUB

Mountain Madness by the Mountain Meister

Post race madness by the battle weary band of Circle mountaineers proved once again that the “Blue & Gold” is tops in both running and mayhem. The short spell of rain did not diminish the joy of accomplishment evident amidst our heroic band of about 50 Circle runners. Random notes on mountain mania: Old man of the mountain Tinker, running his 14th in a row, (one of a very select few to gain automatic entry for his string...ed.) seemed to enjoy his hoard of Circle followers begging him to share morsels of his secrets for mountain success. Team Exeter quaffed gallon after gallon of “O’Doul’s,” swearing they would not stop until they puked. Final tally-O’Leary (14) Eastman (12) Levesque (10) Houghton (9) same order as finish too. Massapequa Park, NY - Inventor Bill Cicio (Siseo) is seeking 100 female marathon runners to field test his new personal care product for women in the next New York City Marathon which will be held on November 3, 1996. The invention, called LaFemme, is a small, flushable, sanitary paper product which provides a woman the freedom to stand in front of and face a toilet with the same convenience a man has always had when using a public restroom. "We are looking for women in all age brackets who may be interested in becoming pioneers when it comes to women's equality." says Bill Cicio, the product's developer. "Each year, hundreds of portable outhouses are set up for this prestigious race and it's about

time that the women runners had a sanitary means of dealing with these wretched, disease culturing, cesspools with a seat which represent the ultimate public restroom challenge for women." When asked if his product might encourage some women runners to answer nature's call off of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, located at the starting line, as a few of their male counterparts have been known to do,

the inventor responded, "I obviously didn't have that type of equality in mind when I invented LaFemme and we certainly do not condone that type of behavior, but I do suspect that some new, unofficial records may be established during the course of this race in the women's division." There were a total of 26,754 runners who participated in the 1995 NYC Marathon, of which 6,470 were female. The race attracted an estimated two million spectators along the route. Approximately 500 portable toilets were erected for participants and spectators. Women runners who are interested in testing the LaFemme product in the upcoming 1996 New York City Marathon should call 516/797-4097 to register. LaFemme, which is a contoured, funnel-like device, is constructed from a single piece of paper that is packaged flat and squeezed open when used. When held in place, the device redirects a woman's urine stream forward into the toilet. Preliminary feedback has shown the product's appeal to span an entire generation - from children too small to be able to straddle public toilet seats, to senior citizens who constantly battle the pain of arthritis associated with sitting and standing. ONE HUNDRED WOMEN MARATHONERS NEEDED TO STAND AND FACE THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE

Louise Rossetti 5K Liz Arceiri’s 6th place finish in 18:35 led WCRC entries in this, the second leg of the “Triad.” Overall winner was Maggie Murray in 16:54. Linda St. Laurent, wife of new WCRC member Mike, was right on Liz’ tail in 7th, 5 seconds back. So, Mike, do the club a big favor and sign up Linda! Hint, Hint.... Next was Sue Passler, 2d master in 19:11 and leading the masters to a team victory. Sue was followed by masters Paula Holm (4M, 20:32) and Debbie Farmer (5M, 20:39). Also running well were Susan Efinger (20:44), Lisa Chace (21:31), Sandy Duvall (21:36), Leslie Behan (22:11), and of course Louise, 1st over 70 in (34:10).

(ed. note..This is My headline, adapted from the original below) Winner’s Circle Runners Shine in “Relay for Life” (a letter submitted by Jim & John Archacki, who did a SUPER job in organizing this event) Thank you to al l who participated in the “Relay for Life” for the American Cancer Society July 12 & 13 at Portsmouth High School.Over $900 was raised and

the team ran 112 miles before torrential rain forced the end of the relay. Pencil in July 11 & 12, 1997 for next year’s relay. Quick facts on the Relay: The WCRC raised $925, by far our best ever, led by Jim A. ($400 plus). We also ran the most distance for the 3d straight year. Overall the event raised nearly $25,000. And the heartiest of thanks to those who donated!

problem, though....You need to stand on your head with a mirror to read it! Good price, aye Bobby? Johnny Coulp shook his head in disgust proclaiming to all that Randall was up to something crooked. Why would he think that of dear Bob? Commenting on the race, ‘Parrot’ Fiene shrieked, “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my whole life.” (even harder than chauffeuring Mister Bobby to work?) Look out for ‘Parrot’ Mike on next year’s Seniors team. The van riders swear Mike’s shrieking was the hardest thing they’ve been through! The delightful Renee Reidel flew east to tackle the mountain, only to end out being butt-tweaked at treeline by a red haired board member as he passed by her. The irate Renee retained Vickie Miller to launch an investigation/possible impeachment probe. Vickie, being entertainment director, deserves to handle this case. The real truth is that Renee thought the ‘Gooser’ was bro’ Bob and ended out kind of disappointed. (ed. note: Why’s that, Tom???) Paula Holm showed who wears the pants as she easily outdistanced Bruce. Vogel gave his all though and should be proud. So weary was he in fact, that he disgustingly dozed aside 40 portajohns at the mountain base, ahh the mountain air! Mountain drivers Cathy Manning and Tom Roldan both vowed to conquer the Hill next year. Groggy Roldan proclaims

RoadKill Janet P. may have the best midsummer tan in the Club, but.....Norm B. gets the nod for the fastest. But SERIOUSLY, Norm, use sunscreen next time you’re handling those tanks! Ed. Note: Norm is on the mend and running again, recovering in time to look good (is that too strong a word?) at his daughter’s wedding June 29th. Hey, Bob R., how were the chocolates???? Didn’t you realize that Luis was STARVING..... You can never have too many COOLERS. And unklike the Lindt balls mentionned above, we’ll all no doubt make use of the cooler set won at the N. Hampton 5K by Tom the MountainMeister. Anyone looking for a gift for John Boyle,? I have it on good authority he’s eyeing a certain watch. He almost had it but the GIVER and the WEARER weren’t the same person. Wonder if they sell them cheap in CHINATOWN? Speaking of Johnny, he was FIRST FOREIGNER (or is that alien) in a 4 miler in Bermuda recently. No word on how many africans were entered. Ron H. and Todd M.would NOT have been proud....when the WCRC reps at the 24 Hour Relay needed to seek help to erect the tent at Portsmouth High. But the WCRC banner looked good... Leslie Behan is 3 for 3 as a master! good job, Les!

to be “the architect of his own misfortune.” Cathy strongly insists insists that driving is much harder than running. Mountain Police are searching for the demure Sue Passler. An overloaded van was stopped for a routine head count halfway down the Hill. Being one person over the limit, Sue took matters into her own hands. To avoid the arrest she dove head first into Fiene’s lap. (He didn’t mind) Due to her quick action the van proceeded uneventfully with ‘Parrot’ Fiene shrieking loudly. Many thanks to the core of volunteers headed by Maryanne Randall for the water stop. Special thanks to Barbara Liebfried for her tireless chef duties at the base. A special commemorative T-Shirt was issued to all Circle runners

conquering the summit. Contact Tom Manning (603) 926-6710 if you were left out. Thanks to John Coulp for T-Shirt printing, and Matt Manning for designs

Many, Many thanks to the Water Stop Crew!

Governors Complete Strong Season Sophs Shine at NE’s Governor Dummer, coached by our own David Abusamra, enjoyed success at the New England Div. III Prep Championships recently. Led by strong distance runners, the Govs placed 2d in Boys’ competition and 5th in the Girls’. First place finishes and meet records were earned by GDA runners Claire Shearman (1500, 3000) and Andy Ramirez (800, 1500). Both runners are just Sophomores with fine running careers ahead of them. Congrats to coach Abu, his staff and especially to the teams.

Women in particular are always needed, and runners of all abilities are invited to run. It's a good chance to run a great cross-country course, as well as to compete for FREE! The GDA staff and students always make us feel like honored guests, making this a special annual event. The course is 3.1 miles, and a course tour is available if you come early.

This yeas’s Newton, NH., Gale Library Race had the misfortune to be scheduled during a time when the WCRC had two races on the docket. The Plover (Roast) 10K and Roses 5K both drew big fields while Newton, a traditional late spring test for many Club members, saw attendance shrink a bit. Still, the WCRC made it’s presence felt, placing 5 1/2 runners in the top 10 and winning 3 age groups. Bob Parisi was 1st WCRC and 3d overall in 28:40, with Pat Huntington top WCRC female and 1st master in 35:40. Additional age-group winners were Bob Randall (50-59) in 33:08 and George Dirago (>60) in 34:41. The 1/2 runner mentionned above is Mick Grant, longtime WCRC member who has been representing another team in races. Mick WON the thing outright in 25:49. Nice job, Mick. Other members of the WCRC juggernaut were: John Webber (5th, 29:14), Luis “I’m Tired” Rios (6th, 29:24), Leo “sub 30” Clarke (7th, 29:57), Bill Steele (8th, 30:16), Ed “you gotta start somewhere” Liebfried (11th, 31:20), John “is he the good-looking” Archacki (12th, 32:03), Don Cloutier (18th, 34:09), Leslie

promisenently in the Open scoring, it follows that the Master’s teams themselves might have done well, since this is one race where a runner can score in both divisions. The Circle Teams did not disappoint, with record-setting victories in both male & female 40+ divisions. Tom Miller & Ed Liebfried joined Hennigar, Gary Passler & Manning in the Men’s win, while Paula Holm followed Vicki Miller & Sue Passler to help the Ladies of the Club win. MountainMeister Tom Manning bestowed the “Performance of the Day” award, fittingly, on a non-scorer, Neil Gleason, whose time eclipsed his former PR by over 12 minutes. A related article by the Meister can be found elsewhere in this issue. Many, Many thanks to all who helped make this insanity happen. Tom, Brad, Vicki, the volunteers and most of all Barb who seemed to be all over the place helping out. Finally, in the tradition of the Hockomock Swamp Rat, the Official Race Song: “Changes in Attitudes, Changes in Latitudes” (Not to mention Altitudes) If we couldn’t laugh we would all go insane......

Congratulations to the winners John Wile, Dave Kelly (who ran another superb run, looks like a future Circle star, McCormick couldn't lose him), John Coulp, and best friends Tom Manning and Ted Jones. A total of 18 runners were scattered to the four corners and all found their way back. Thanks to the drivers, Mike Farmer, Jim Cocozella, young Knapp and Paula Holm. After running at least a half marathon back from Groveland, Paula's charges weren't giving thanks. In fact this was probably the end of Boyle's comeback. This is a great way to add diversity to our running. There is nothing like not having a clue of where or how far away you are, and a little bit of inter-club competition. (ed. note: Mike has submitted some interesting proposals for making “Fugouwee” a more competitive and structured event. More on that next year.)

McGuinness Scores AG Win at Hyannis Tri

Allie McGuness, tri-ing her hand at triathloning as is hubby Ted, eased into the sport with a win of the 40-49 age group at the Hyannis Sprint Triathlon. Look for Allie as an up-and-comer in her new sport. As for Ted, we hear he keeps getting lost on the bike courses! Is he being coached by Tom Roldan or what? Stu Olsen also competed and had a solid 52:13 for 21st place in a field of 300+. Speaking of Mr. Jones, Ted DID win a bike-and run this spring. I think it was in Rowley, 6.5 miles, where he bested Dan Jones by 40:41 to 41:18. The Race results on page 4 are from 1981. The significance, is Ted Wendt’s first race. Think he still knows the splits?

Don’t Ask Him, he’s from “Team O’Doul” Leslie Behan got this answer when asking Neil Levesque about the Mt. Washington Race: “It’s some kind of stupid, sick thrill”Boy You sure encouraged her!

Larry Fisher was selected as an Olympic Torch Bearer, and carried the flame in Vermont and will have a report in the next issue. Congratulations, Larry!

WCRC members David Abusamra and Ted Jones will will be in Atlanta for the Olympic games, David as an official in the Sports Technical Information office at the Olympic Stadium, and Ted as the fortunate holder of tickets to most of the Track & Field finals. David’s duties are distributing information on results, etc. to the press, coaches and others primarily by computer. He has invited WCRC members who might be in the area to look him up at the stadium. Ted, with son Brendan, will hope to recruit , with Mr. Abu as interpreter, Morceli for the High St. Mile. It seems a good bet since the World’s Fastest Miler has probably never hoisted a Nut Brown at a friendly spot like the Circle, played Po-Keno, or met Shamu.

So now, as Bruce so eloquently put it, the baton has passed. And I get to run with it. Oh, joy...Oh, rapture...Truth is, I know NOTHING about this publishing gig. I just like to have a few laughs writing RoadKill about my many valued friends in the club. BUT, you know how it goes, one thing leads to another and the next thing you know.........you’re running up a mountain, or lost on a “Fugouwee” run, or maybe walking somewhere in Newton on the 19th of April. Or in My case, lost in the MS Publisher manual.

Well I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it. Meanwhile bear with me while I experiment with this stuff. Bruce has promised his support when needed, and has provided the all-important software. And now that my PC has undergone needed repairs, IT should be in shape for the long run ahead. As for You in WCRC land remember it’s Your RAG. The more you send me the better it gets. So, Wish me luck.......

The Water Stop Crew had a “whale” of a time at Mt. Washington. On the right , of course, is Dickie, only slightly slowed down from race pace. Ted Wendt has

promised to beat the ever jovial LeBlanc’s time in ‘97.

A Typical Month for Louise Rossetti Yet another “running animal” has been discovered ! Yet everyone seems to know her already. Louise has been racing the these parts for years, and is best known for her smile, which flashes the same at the start or finish. But now the truth is out. A “running animal!” June brings summer and with it the hot weather. It’s a tough month to race, before we’ve had a chance to acclimate to the weather. But Louise managed to set a PR for most races in a month, 16! Quite an accomplishment for anybody, but at age 74 (I think that’s right) it’s even more impressive. Considering her average pace is upwards of an 11 minute mile (and that, too is outstanding), that’s the time equivalent of 32 races at the 5:30 pace run by the manly men of the club. Ouch. In June Louise ran Riverwoods (Exeter) 5K, Danvers Kiwanis 10K, Shooter’s (Quincy) 5K , James Connelly/Friday’s (Woburn) 8K, 19th Dory (Swampscott) 5M, Malden Y 5K, Hilltop AA North Mem.(Kingston MA) 10K, Khoury’s,(Somerville) 4.13M, Weiner Run (S.Hamilton)10K, Project Pacer (Needham) 5M, Rossetti (Beverly) 5K, Waltham Y 5K, Children’s Museum (Easton) 5M, Asbury Grove 1M, Amesbury Days 5M, and POW-MIA (S.Boston) 10K. Louise was undefeated in June in the 70+ and when there was no such division, the 60+ as well. Her best 5K was 34:10 at, yup, the Louise Rossetti race, she ran 54:42 for 5M at Amesbury, and best of all finished up the month with a fine 66:52 in Southie. All June’s bests were at the last race of the month for each distance. Watch out in July if that continues. I hope Louise will continue to keep us posted, and most of all that she continue to bring her smile to the races in our area Congrat’s Louise, on a great month.
