Our 37th year has been very interesting to organize without using the high school auditoria, because of construction. The biggest concern is our growing attendance for our daytime school programs. This past November, we had booked five school programs at Kelly Walsh for the Jim Gamble Puppet Production of PETER AND THE WOLF. That gave us 3,000 total seats – but the reservations caused us to purchase – and fill – a sixth. Then, in January, it always has worked to have three seatings at NCHS for Soul Street Dance Co. – 3,600 seats. However, we had 700 too many teachers and students who wanted to come, so again, we purchased another session, and in the end, the attendance was 4,500!

For 2015-16, Highland Park Community Church is hosting some of our fall artists. Their 1700 seats will really help, especially with the Kenya Safari Acrobats. The last time they came, they used the KW Gym during the day, but ended up with people all over and some turned away for the evening, as the CY Gym was the the only space available. The Industrial Building at the Central Wyoming Fairgrounds will host several concerts, again with lots of space for students. It also will have space for a cash bar and dancing for Paper Bird with wonderful harmonies from the three female leads – and we’ll have the same and look forward to lots of dancing at the Ramkota for the Glenn Miller Orchestra!

Two on Tap will be sending choreography to local dance students in order for them to join in the performance.Melissa Giattino was a Radio City Rockette, and she and Ron de Stefano – think Fred and Ginger with stellar voices! One more dance opportunity – there will be a master class for all ages to learn the hula with the Polynesian Paradise Dancers.

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church will be a beautiful setting for Tenors UnLimited, and Casper College alums Andre Bohren and Susan Powell will get to perform in Wheeler Concert Hall. The Bar J Wranglers will work their magic at Restoration Church.

We have an international flavor with Washboard Chaz from New Orleans, Greg Young’s Steel Drum Band from California, and the free Japan Day Celebration with Taiko with Toni & Lance, as well as Kuniko Yamamoto’s origami and stories. Australian Paul Taylor will be joined by Rod Garnett and world music ensemble Lights Along The Shore; Russian pianist Nina McIntire combines classical and pop music; the Celtic Exhibition will be in March, and Colcannon will come in April.

How cool is it that Jeri Sager, Grizabella on Broadway in CATS!, will do a workshop with performers from the Casper College production of that show! And ladies, prepare to be charmed by Kevin Spirtas from Broadway and Days of Our Lives – Dr. Craig Wesley!

Please explore the information on these and our other talented artists, and please come and be enchanted and energized by live performances!

David Zoby’s creative nonfiction has appeared in Ninth Letter, The Sun Magazine, Gray’s Sporting Journal, American Angler, Fourth Genre and the Missouri Review. Dave lives in Casper, Wyoming. He keeps a lively fishing blog at davezoby.com.

Larry Neeff began playing at age 10. "My parents inherited a piano and I was instantly hooked." Larry began playing professionally at 15. "I was too young for a car, didn't have a girlfriend, so I actually had money!' After two years of music study at Casper College and two years at Metro State, he played with a variety of rock bands, including Zephyr out of Boulder, Colorado. When he met Thumbs Carlyle, the legendary country guitar player offered him a gig in Las Vegas where they were opening act for artists like Merle Haggard, Steve Warner, Alabama and the Oakridge Boys. He also played with famed guitarist/steel guitarist Buzz Evans for over ten years, and wrote the title song to his first CD “ It’s A Hard Life”. In 1980 he won the Wyoming Songwriter contest with “Out Of The Frying Pan”. While living in San Diego, he became a member of the San Diego Songwriters Guild, and worked as a studio musician for Jack Temchien who co-wrote many songs with Don Henley of the Eagles. He's been playing professionaly for over fifty years and has the stories to prove it!

He retired as musical director at the Word Christian Fellowship Church after more than ten years and recently returned from a year in Costa Rica where he played the beach bars and learned a more eco-friendly way of life.

Born in Chicago, Rick Kempa moved west in 1974 to attend St. John’s College in Santa Fe. After a several-year career as a hitchhiker and oddjobsman, he enrolled at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he earned an MFA in 1987. Since 1988, he has lived with his wife Fern in Rock Springs, where they raised their two children. He teaches writing and philosophy and directs the Honors Program at Western Wyoming Community College. He is an avid backpacker, with a special love for Grand Teton and Grand Canyon national parks.

Rick has authored two books of poems, Ten Thousand Voices, published by Littoral Press in 2013, and Keeping the Quiet, published in 2008 by Bellowing Ark Press. He has also edited two anthologies, On Foot: Grand Canyon Backpacking Stories (Vishnu Temple Press 2014) and, with Peter Anderson, Going Down Grand: Poems from the Grand Canyon (Lithic Press, 2015).

Bob Meloy started plumbing & pipefitting in 1973 in Fairbanks, Alaska. He met Jim while they were helping sax & trombone sections at a junior high school jazzband rehearsal in 1975.  There was a hiring freeze on teachers so Jim landed a contract to clean and repair   the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District's band instruments...He needed a sink big enough to give a sousaphone a bath. They began playing together in different groups after the sink episode. Eventually, Jim moved home to Colorado and Bob moved to Casper. Jim retired & had time to play in groups again. One group needed a trombone sub once in a while, and Jim recommended Bob. JimBob Duo has played in Colorado and Casper many times at churches, hospitals, and assisted living/nursing homes.

Both Jim (sax & clarinet) and Bob (trombone) also perform with "Generations" Big Band, and "Dixieland-A-Plenty" in the Denver area. Since 2008, Bob has played “Taps” and has provided honors for Fallen Veterans.

ANA MERCHANT came to live with the Merchants from China at the age of one year. She began her musical career at the age of four, by taking group Suzuki lessons at her preschool from Jennifer Cowell.

In 2004, at the age of five, she began to work with Mary Kalbfleisch learning fiddle tunes while her dad took banjo lessons from Al Kalbfliesch. She began playing in the Casper Fiddle Club and winning several contests in Wyoming and beyond.

At sixteen, she continues her studies with Jennifer Cowell at Casper College, was Principal Violin in the Casper Youth Orchestra, is currently Principal Violin in two high school orchestras, performs with the Casper College Chamber Orchestra, and plays fiddle, guitar and mandolin with her band “Ana, Rachel and Friends.”

RACHEL MERCHANT came from China at the age of 10 months. As a toddler, she would saw away on an old !/16th size fiddle with no rosin on the bow, hence no sound. By the time preschool came around, Rachel was ready to go.

At age 12, she has won several Wyoming State Fiddle Championships and plays guitar and mandolin and banjo, with Ana, Rachel and Friends. She has performed with the Casper Youth Orchestra, and currently plays percussion with her middle school band and jazz band.

KIM MERCHANT: 11 years ago, I introduced myself to Al Kalbfleisch at a function where he and his band were performing and asked for lessons on the banjo. The rest is history. I’d played the guitar for several years, and always wanted to learn the banjo. After about six months of lessons, he turned me loose and it’s been an obsession ever since. Al and his wife Mary have become “adopted Grandparents” to the girls and close family friends! The greatest gift for me is to play the music I love, with the people I love!

There isn’t room to list and give thanks to all the folks we’ve met that have given us instruction, love and support along our musical travels.

Writer Barbara Smith has lived the boom and bust of the American West, primarily in Rock Springs, Wyoming, “A friendly immigrant mining community.” She writes about these times of rapid change and the effects it has on people. Smith is the granddaughter of Norwegian homesteaders, and daughter of Great Depression parents, all of whom kept moving West, looking for better lives. Their stories inform her writing.

Smith’s poetry and essays have been published in collections such as Wyoming Fence Lines, Deep West, A Literary Tour of Wyoming, Leaning Into the Wind, Woven on the Wind, Crazy Woman Creek, The Last Best Place, Ucross: the 1st Ten Years, Letters from Wyoming, and Drive, He Said, among others.

Smith has received the Neltje Blanchan Memorial Writing award, the Wyoming Governor’s Arts Award, the Wyoming Arts Council Literary Fellowship and a residency at Ucross. She retired from Western Wyoming Community College in 2007.

The Charles Ledbetter Trio Is a Jazz Group from Casper, Wyoming that features the talents of Aaron Ridley (Guitar) and Charles Ledbetter (Bass). Other talented musicians often join them, including the astounding drummer Tom McCarthy. Though trio is in the title, they play in multiple formats from duo to quintet. Both Aaron and Charles are accomplished musicians who play regularly with other Casper area bands, but their first love is jazz. Aaron is a technically gifted guitarist and innovative improviser who studied at Denver University. Charles studied jazz at Casper College and has developed a funk-inspired style that sets him apart from other local bassists. Their influences include the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Pat Metheny and Bill Evans.

Originally from New York, Chaz lived in Boulder, Colorado from 1975-1997, and played with such bands as the legendary Ophelia Swing Band, Prosperity Jazz Band, BBQ Bob & Washboard Chaz, Judy Roderick and the Forebears, and Bleecker St. During this time, Chaz was a two time finalist in KBCO’s Boulder songwriting contest.

Upon arrival in New Orleans in December 2000, Chaz established himself as a seasoned musician, forming his Washboard Chaz Blues Trio with Ben Maygarden on harmonica and Roberto Luti on slide guitar. Shortly afterward, Chaz joined Alex McMurray and Matt Perrinne on sousaphone to form the Tin Men, one of New Orleans’ most unique and recognized bands. Since then, Chaz has also played with the cream of New Orleans musicians, including the New Orleans Nightcrawlers, The Iguanas, Tuba Fats, Royal Fingerbowl, The Jazz Vipers, the Tin Men, The Palmetto Bug Stompers and Washboard Rodeo.

Chaz played a small part in the CBS movie titled “Just Like the Ones”, about miraculous snow storms that hit all over the country, co-starring Mary Tyler

Moore and Poppy Montgomery. Chaz’s song “Mother Died” was featured in Werner Hertzog’s remake of The Bad Lieutenant staring Nicholas Cage.

Chaz has shared the stage with Bonnie Raitt, John Hammond, Taj Mahal, Anders Osborne and Corey Harris, among others. He has opened for many blues greats including Muddy Waters, Robert Cray, Doc Watson and Keb Mo. Chaz’s musical talents have been featured on over 100 recordings, including John Hammond’s 1998 Grammy nominated “Long as I Have You.” He has played festivals and clubs from coast to coast, including the Bottom Line in New York City, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Telluride Blue Grass Festival, the American Music Hall in San Francisco and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver.  He has played successful international tours with his band Bleecker St. in Germany, in Holland and Germany with David Booker, and in Japan with Chris Mule.

His talents extend from washboard, congas and other hand percussion, drum kit, lead and background vocals, to songwriting and arranging.

Echo Klaproth is a fourth-generation Wyoming rancher, writer, retired teacher and ordained minister from Shoshoni. In a ceremony at the State Capitol on July 10, 2013, she was introduced by Gov. Matt Mead as Wyoming’s sixth Poet Laureate. Her writing reflects stories of her family’s heritage; struggles, gains, and growth as a woman, wife, mother, friend, and Christian; as well as the blessings she experiences because she was born and raised in Wyoming among good and honest folks.    She loves to travel around the state meeting people and celebrating her love of life through poetry, through programs, and/or writing workshops.

Jody Taylor (JD Blues Band, Cory & the Crew, Sharp 5) is a Casper stalwart, an accomplished player and interpreter of the blues. Cole Miller just digs playing his ugly green Strat with Working Hands (CD release soon) and the East 15th Street Band. He also plays acoustic riffs with local favorite Salsa Grass. Jody & Cole will be playing blues, some jazzy blues, and some old rock tunes that will put a grin on your face.

Jeremy Huck is an active member of the Casper/Glenrock music scene. He teaches 5th-12th grade band and guitar at Glenrock public schools, is an avid trumpeter in the area, is a member of the Casper Municipal band and also performs regularly with groups such as the Casper Brass. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Montana State University-Billings in 1996, and his Masters of Music in Conducting from the American Band College at Southern Oregon University in 2005. Before moving to Wyoming in 2003, Jeremy taught for six years in the public schools of Montana.

Jeremy’s bands are award-winning groups that have been asked to play for the Governor of Wyoming and the Wyoming State Senate, and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2009 he was named Teacher Of The Year by the Glenrock school district. Playing multiple instruments is a hobby of Jeremy’s, so you should not

be surprised to see him playing another instrument or two besides the trumpet at this concert.

Chris Ehrlich, trombone, born and raised in Casper, is a graduate of Natrona County High School, Casper College and the University of Northern Colorado. After graduating with his Bachelor’s in Music Education, he became the band director at Kelly Walsh High School where he served the students for 11 years.  During his years at KWHS the band developed into an outstanding program and consistently won superior ratings at State Marching Band Festival, North Platte District Music Festival, and the Kinser Jazz Festival.

Chris routinely performs with the Casper College Concert Band, Casper College Jazz Ensemble, the Casper Municipal Band, Dem Bones Trombone Quintet as well as at several churches and ARTCORE functions around Casper.

Direct from starring as “Corny Collins” in the Las Vegas Production of HAIRSPRAY, in September 2003, selected over hundreds of actors, Spirtas made a huge ripple in the Broadway community when he was cast to be Hugh Jackman’s standby in the smash hit musical, “The Boy From Oz”.

Before that, for 7-1⁄2 years, Spirtas played the dashing and frolicking Dr. Craig Wesley on NBC's "Days of Our Lives".

In 1999 Soap Opera Digest nominated Spirtas for Best Villain and TV Guide (12/25/99) touted him for a Best Supporting Actor Emmy, not only achieving critical acclaim for his acting but also becoming a huge fan favorite in the process. In February 2000, Spirtas had the delightful opportunity to play his "Days" role of 'Dr. Craig Wesley' opposite Matt Leblanc's 'Dr. Drake Ramoray' on NBC's Friends.

At age 18, Spirtas landed his first professional job on Broadway: the role of Mike ("I Can Do That") Costa, in A CHORUS LINE. Kerry Grombacher plays guitar and mandolin and writes and performs contemporary folk and western songs. In the spirit of the troubadours of old, his songs paint vivid portraits and tell fascinating stories that are set in the landscape that stretches from New Orleans to the desert Southwest and north to the Hi-Line of Montana. Drawing on over forty years’ experience playing music and an academic background in ethnomusicology, Grombacher’s work explores the boundaries of musical genres, and he frequently mixes traditions: cowboy songs written as rumbas, polkas or “Cajun” songs; a piece, inspired by a photograph, that combines spoken word verses and a melodic chorus; a blues-rumba written in the obscure “chiastic” form; and songs written in Spanish and English.

Grombacher also conducts workshops on creativity and festival workshops for musicians on music business topics, and talks on music history, creative writing, music composition and songwriting. He was the recipient of a grant from the Meet the Composer Foundation

for work with ARTCORE in Casper Wyoming.

Aspen Black played violin in the Maryland Youth Symphony, and studied several instruments and voice as a teen. She was a soloist in church and school choirs, and she was active in musical theater and Madrigals. She recorded two country music albums in Nashville, in 1993 and 1994, which yielded two commercially charting singles and a music video that aired on CMT. Since leaving Nashville, she has recorded five albums and has been nominated for several awards from the Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists.

Aspen Black takes the mystery out of songs and songwriting in three workshops that are specifically tailored to young students. She is the founding president of the Western Music Association East Coast Chapter, has served for three years as an officer of the Western Music Association Western Wordsmiths Chapter.

Sponsored by Central Wyoming College, UW Fine Arts Outreach, and the Wyoming Arts Council,   "A  Rambling  Stretch" is a multimedia suite by composer Wyoming native Tyler Gilmore, inspired by the unique beauty of Riverton and the Wind River region. In 2013 Gilmore returned to his home town along with renowned photographer Gary Isaacs to film, photograph, and sound record the area.  He then composed music inspired by the imagery. The resulting work weaves together the photos, sound and video, with all original music for a twelve piece chamber jazz ensemble comprised of the top jazz musicians from the western United States.

The work is an eight movement suite performed in conjunction with a projected video.  Influenced by modern composers such as Mark-Anthony Turnage and

Thomas Ades, it strives to communicate the vastness of Wyoming's landscapes along with the deep emotional connection Gilmore feels with the area. The remaining selections for the concert will be original big band scores composed by Gilmore.

Tyler Gilmore won the 2009 ASCAP/Columbia College Commission in Honor of Hank Jones and won the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award for three years running — 2008, 2009, and 2010. His music has been reviewed in DownBeat and performed by Jon Faddis’s Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Bobby Watson and The UMKC Concert Jazz Ensemble, The University of Northern Colorado Jazz Band I, The Playground Ensemble, and The Henry Mancini Institute Overture Orchestra, among others. His work is published by UNC Jazz Press and Minor Ninth Music.

With 10 instruments between them and 53 strings to tune, Otter Creek – Peter and Mary Danzig –burst onto the national Folk scene in 2012 with back to back hit albums on the Folk Charts. In the four years since the husband and wife duo began playing together, Otter Creek has won multiple awards for their virtuosic instrumentals, adept songwriting, and visionary arrangements of traditional and original tunes. They have drawn praise from around the country, leading one critic to describe them as “a duo that is both a technical marvel and tastefully perfect.” Their second album Shiver Into Spark (September 2012) has garnered attention as a collection of “songs that appeal to the heart and mind as well as the ear” and a work of “superb musicianship underpinned by stunning technique” (Greg Harness, Rootsworld Magazine).

Often compared to Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, Pete and Anne Sibley, or Tim O’Brien, Otter Creek’s classical training, combined with Peter’s deep roots in the folk tradition enable them to cross boundaries among musical genres. They have performed with the Salt Lake Choral Artists and the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society in the Utah and Nevada premieres of Carol Barnett’s Bluegrass Mass, and performed with the Utopia Early Music Ensemble in programs that blend classical and folk traditions. They are also sought after session musicians and in addition to frequent studio work have performed on stage with well-known singer songwriters Peter Mayer, Kate MacLeod, and Alicia McGovern and have opened for acts such as Claire Lynch and Mitch Barrett.

“The Persuasions are the undisputed heavyweight champions of a cappella. They are to singing what Muhammad Ali was to boxing–invincible, nnovative, original, and beautiful.” –New York Post

Together since they started singing on the stoops of Brooklyn in 1961, The Persuasions have released 18 albums, and have recorded or performed with artists including Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, The Neville Brothers, Country Joe McDonald, B.B. King. Their music has turned up in films from Joe Versus the Volcano to E.T.

The Persuasions continue to record solid albums, generally on smaller labels. They’ve mixed it up a bit, recording a children’s album, On the Good Ship Lollipop, in 1999, followed by successive tribute albums to Frank Zappa, the Grateful Dead and the Beatles.

Rolling Stone rated their 1977 album, Chirpin’, one of the hundred best works of the 1970s. Rock critic and author Greil Marcus has called their style a “perfect marriage of passion and intelligence.” Mix

Magazine wrote, “The Persuasions are four parts of one voice, one spirit.” Cash Box proclaimed in 1996, “These all-vocal, instrument-free heroes paved the way for today’s platinum a cappella acts, Take 6 and Bobby McFerrin, as well as the retro-hip-hop styles of Boyz II Men and Color Me Badd.” Or, as Tom Waits once said, “These guys are deep sea divers. I’m just a fisherman in a boat.”

The Persuasions were discovered by Zappa, of all people, in 1968. So striking and formidable was their vocal prowess that Zappa signed them to his Straight label (Warner Brothers) merely on the strength of hearing them perform over the phone–after a friend called from a New York nightclub, declaring, “Frank, you’ve got to hear this.”

Andre Bohren was born in New Orleans, but grew up traveling across the country with his family, following his father Spencer Bohren’s tour schedule. When Andre was twelve, the family finally settled in Wyoming, and it was there he discovered a love of classical music. Four years later, under the tutelage of Dr. Janet Ahlquist, he would perform Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue” with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, and he represented the state in several MTNA piano competitions. In 2000 he was selected First Alternate at the northwest regional round.

After moving back to New Orleans, he studied for two years with Dr. John Murphy at Loyola University. It was there that he founded the rock/funk band Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes (JSDN) in 2001, manning the drum and percussion chair. This band has been Andre’s main focus for the past 13-plus years, as they have released six albums and toured across the country for over a decade, playing such renowned venues as Red Rocks Amphitheater, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and New York’s Knitting Factory.

In 2012 Andre began studying classical piano once more at the University of New Orleans with Dr. Robin Williams, and after taking a break from school for a decade, he has just put finishing touches on his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Studies. When not playing piano, Andre can be found working with many artists around New Orleans, including JSDN, Dave Jordan, Rory Danger & the Danger Dangers, The Write Brothers, and his father Spencer Bohren.

TWO ON TAP marks the creative collaboration of celebrated musical theatre performers Melissa Giattino and Ron DeStefano.

Melissa Giattino began her career at age 17 in the National Tour of A Chorus Line and hasn't looked back since. While appearing in the all-Gershwin musical Crazy for You at the famous Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia, Ms. Giattino auditioned for the Hal Prince/Susan Stroman production of Show Boat and soon found herself singing and dancing alongside an all-star cast on London's West End. Her talents as a true "triple-threat" performer eventually led her to New York, where she made her Broadway Debut as an original revival cast member of the tap-dancing spectacular, 42nd Street.

Her incredible talents have been featured in the best-known kick-line in history, the Radio City Rockettes, and she has assisted and dance-captained for some of the most famous tap choreographers. Gifted with a beautiful voice, Ms. Giattino has starred in the International Tour of Peter Pan, Fanny Brice in Funny Girl,

Esther Smith in Meet Me in St. Louis, and Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun.

A Florida native, Ron DeStefano spent his college years balancing classical vocal performance studies at Florida State University with professional musical theatre roles at Seaside Music Theater in Daytona Beach.

Following graduation, he began auditioning for the Broadway stage, and just months later made his his international debut with the Tony-Award winning musical Evita.

He has sung and danced at New York City's Lincoln Center (Babes in Toyland), Connecticut's Goodspeed Opera House (No, No, Nanette) and New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse (Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella).  Mr. DeStefano appeared opposite Academy Award nominee Theodore Bikel in the National Tour of Fiddler on the Roof, and he has lent his lyric tenor to song-and-dance roles in many shows including 42nd Street, Anything Goes, and Sugar Babies.  He received the coveted Back Stage Bistro Award for his cabaret work.

Christian Howes grew up in Columbus, Ohio, studying Suzuki violin from the age of five, and soloing with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at age 16. During his teens, he played guitar and bass in rock, blues, and fusion bands. At age 20, he began playing violin in gospel church settings. These experiences ultimately led him to pursue a singular goal to become a versatile jazz musician and composer.

Since then, he has gained respect from critics and players alike, establishing himself as a world class jazz violinist and educator. From 2001–2009, Howes became an in–demand violinist on the New York scene, collaborating with a bevy of top shelf jazz artists, and holding a four–year chair in Bill Evans’ “Soulgrass” band.

Christian was a favorite of the late Les Paul, with whom he worked closely for 11 years. Following a three–year tenure as Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music and after establishing his “street cred” in New York City, Christian returned to his to build his career as a bandleader and entrepreneur.

In 2011, Christian was ranked as the #1 “Rising Star” violinist in the “Downbeat Critics Poll” and nominated for the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Violinist Of The Year”. In 2012, he was voted among the top three violinists in JazzTimes’ “Expanded Critics Poll“ and received the Residency Partner Award from Chamber Music America.

He signed with Resonance Records in 2008. His first album, “Heartfelt”, featured pianist Roger Kellaway, showcasing ballads and lyrical works. His newest release, “Southern Exposure,” featuring accordionist Richard Galliano, draws from a Hispanic sphere of influence.

In 2001, he founded the Creative Strings Workshop and Festival, which convenes every July in Columbus. Howes also launched an online lessons website in 2011, the “Creative Strings Academy,” exploring jazz and improvised music. Since 2007, he has also built an innovative online production business via a remote, collaborative “virtual” orchestra.

Chris Proctor, winner of the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship, and popular Sugarhouse, Rounder, Flying Fish and Windham Hill recording artist will be performing in concert. An internationally recognized 6- and 12-string guitarist, composer, recording artist, performer, and clinician for Taylor Guitars, Proctor has produced several books and videos that teach his techniques and compositions for solo guitar, and writes extensively for the guitar press. He is touring to promote his new release and tenth solo recording, Close and Personal Friends, on Sugarhouse Records, and his recent concert/interview DVD on Stefan Grossman’s Vestapol Video Guitar Artistry series, Morning Thunder.

Chris Proctor is known around the western world as one of the modern masters of fingerstyle guitar, and is at the forefront of contemporary steel-string guitar. Since winning the National Fingerstyle Guitar competition, he has toured constantly in North America and Europe, releasing a steady stream of recordings of his compositions and arrangements. His music is rooted in classic Americana, spiced with soul, folk, Celtic, jazz, pop, and classical flavors, all of which are in evidence in the nine finely-crafted medleys which comprise Close and Personal Friends, a stunning set of arrangements of the music he grew up with.

He has appeared on two popular Windham Hill Guitar Samplers and was senior clinician for Taylor Guitars for more than 20 years. To honor him Taylor manufactured 100 "Chris Proctor Signature Model" guitars to his unique design specifications.

Chris’s warm stage presence and sense of humor, his 12-string and slide work, his adventurous 6-string techniques and tunings, his stunning original guitar pieces and arrangements, and his pioneering use of the electronic guitar bow have all made him a favorite with guitar fans everywhere.

125 College Drive • Casper, WY 82601 caspercollege.edu

The 31st Annual Casper College Humanities Festival and Demorest Lecture will be held FEBRUARY 24-26, 2016 and will focus on the theme “Redemption.” Local and national scholars in the humanities such as art, gender studies, anthropology, film, music, and history will present on the theme and encourage a dialogue with attendees in one hour sessions.

The keynote for this event will be Jennifer Teege, author of My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me: A Black Woman Discovers Her Family’s Nazi Past. At the age of 38 Teege discovered by chance that she was the granddaughter of Amon Göth, the notorious Nazi concentration camp commander portrayed by actor Ralph Fiennes in the movie Schindler’s List. While in the Hamburg Germany library, Teege accidentally found a book and recognized her mother on the cover. The book was about the concentration camp commander Amon Göth and his daughter Monika – Teege’s mother. The 2016 Humanities Festival hopes to probe redemption through experiences like Teege’s that speak to the human condition.

These festival sessions are free and open to the public and will be held in conjunction with the Casper College Department of Theatre and Dance production of Carmina Burana directed by Jodi Youmans-Jones as well as the Casper College Department of Music’s RedStone Recital and Gallery Series with vocalist Melissa Malde.

Continuing education credits and PTSB credits are available; please contact the Casper College Continuing Education Department for more information.

Lost in Africa is a spectacle for the eyes, ears and heart. The death defying stunts, comedy, audience participation and heart pounding music combine to create a production that will keep guests of all ages on the edge of their seats.

The story begins with a tourist visiting Africa. He has been separated from his group when he stumbles upon an abandoned village. He begins exploring the various items left behind. He begins to play the drums which startle and anger the natives. The tourist has nothing to defend himself with so he pushes the blame to….the audience! Audience members will be worked into the plot and brought to the stage throughout the show in this exciting and entertaining African romp.

Danger will always be prevalent as the natives figure out different ways to do away with the tourist. Each major production number is tied together. The tourist tries to “buy time” by creating games with the items the natives use as weapons. For instance, instead of using a rope to hang the tourist he teaches them to jump rope. The more the natives are entertained, the longer he is allowed to “live”. He hopes to win them over and survive.

Lost In Africa features many amazing stunts never seen in North America including the Bed of Nails, High-Flying Jump Rope, Human Pyramid, Contortion, Chair Stacking and much more. These amazing athletes have performed for colleges, corporate events, fairs and festivals around the world.

PRODUCED BY STAGE IIIDATES TO BE ANNOUNCED

ARTCORE congratulates Heather Judd on winning the organization’s One-Act Play Competition! In 2009, she won for WOLF!, and her play for 2015 is UNRAVELED.

Competition winners receive a $300 cash prize and the debut of the play. As before, Stage III Community Theatre will produce the play, at a date to be chosen.

The judge, Kathryn Schultz Miller, wrote A THOUSAND CRANES, and has produced scores of plays. Part of her critique said, “Unraveled is the story of Penelope as we

know her from the Greek epic poem, The Odyssey. I found Unraveled to be a mature and eloquent work. It

is quite moving as piece to be read carefully. The author has accomplished a small play that is quite thoughtful

and profound.”

52

Page 55: July 20 2015 7:30 pm

Heather Judd is the 6th-8th grade teacher at Mount Hope Lutheran School in Casper where she teaches the full spectrum of subjects from Latin to algebra. She also enjoys playing organ for her church, baking Friday morning treats for her students and colleagues, participating in English Country Dancing, acting in community theatre, and—of course—writing.

Heather first began writing plays for her students to perform, and this annual tradition has produced a variety

of short comedies, many of which combine history or literature with such varied elements as baseball, game shows, and Star Trek. Several years ago she expanded her playwriting audience with Wolf!, which was honored as winner of the 2009 ARTCORE one-act play competition. Unraveling marks another milestone: her first attempt at writing drama rather than comedy.

Joe Scott and Hannah Alkire joined forces on the music scene in 1998. This confluence of two gifted musicians has resulted in the internationally acclaimed duo, Acoustic Eidolon.

Joe Scott performs on a unique, custom designed double-neck guitjo, a banjo/guitar combination created exclusively by Joe and deemed by USA Today as “a beautiful harp-like sounding instrument…. like nothing they’ve ever heard before.” The double-neck guitjo has 14 strings. Joe can play both necks simultaneously, a technique he developed over time which continues to awe his peers as well as Acoustic Eidolon’s audiences.

Hannah Alkire was classically trained on the cello. She studied with G. Magyar of the Hungarian String Quartet and has won accolades worldwide for her exquisite tone and mesmerizing emotion she puts into each performance. Her inquisitive nature has prompted her to take her cello playing into uncharted territories, risky moves that have continued her reputation as a tour-de-force in cello performance.

Acoustic Eidolon calls Colorado home though they have performed extensively throughout the world. They have nine CDs and one DVD to their credit. With a repertoire that defies categories, their signature sound knows no bounds as their music travels through Celtic, World, Latin and Folk music influences. At times, even some Asian tonal poems and hard rock are blended into the mix. Dirty Linen Magazine praises them as “a sumptuous musical feast.” They are described by the Swallow Hill Music Association as “an evening of brilliant instrumentality,” and Georgia’s Good Life Magazine enthuses, “Acoustic Eidolon offers concert-goers a chance to absorb some of the most powerful and intriguing music on the scene today.”

The convergence of their talents took Joe and Hannah a step further, sharing not only a musical vision but a life vision. They were married in 2001. Joe and Hannah’s live performances are a direct reflection of their musical and emotional alliances.

Adelaide-native Paul Taylor celebrates the culture of his Australian homeland in shows and workshops for all ages, sharing stories, photos and music of Aboriginal and European Australia. He is an authentic player of Aboriginal percussion and didjeridoo, having learned from the last living member of the Wardaman Aboriginal clan who also made Paul an honorary member of his people. Taylor is mentored by Yidumduma (elder) Bill Harney, last male custodian of the Wardaman culture in Australia's Northern Territory. Trained as a social worker, Taylor has spent his life traveling and experiencing cultures from around the world. He also trained in theatre at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, UK and worked professionally as an actor and stage manager in Australia's regional theatres as well as a circus clown performing throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Taylor's talents and dedication to the performing arts have been recognized and endorsed by the state Arts Councils of Texas, Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota, North and South Carolina, and South Dakota.

The sounds of the instrumental quartet Lights Along the Shore resonate with the beauty of lights flickering in villages along the shores of the great rivers of Moldova, and the lights of Laramie, Wyoming shimmering on the expanse of the great American prairie.

Blake McGee, Lisa Rickard, Rod Garnett, and Steve Barnhart use a variety of wind instruments in combination with keyboard and percussion to create a unique sound that is highly unexpected yet easily enjoyed. This unique instrumental performing ensemble specializes in original compositions and arrangements of classical and folk music from around the world. Irish, Moldovan, Romanian, Bulgarian, and American folk melodies along with classical, jazz, and original compositions make up the musical world of Lights Along the Shore.

Jalan Crossland is an "endemic Wyoming treasure" (Rita Basom- Wyoming Arts Council). He is widely acclaimed by audiences, critics, and his musical peers as being a premier acoustic guitarist, as well as banjo player, singer-songwriter, and engaging showman. Along with dozens of regional contest awards, his extraordinary guitar work earned him National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship honors in '97 and the State Flatpick Championship title of his home state in 1999. In recognition for his contribution to the arts in Wyoming, he was bestowed with the Governor's Arts Award in 2013.

Magazines as far-ranging as the New York Times and No Depression have run features on him, and Paste Magazine included him and his ensemble as being among Wyoming’s top bands. He has made numerous television and radio appearances and is portrayed in the short film “Wyomericana,” which won the Laramie Film Festival in 2014. He’s been invited as the opening act on two national tours with Texas songwriting legend Robert Earl Keen. Jalan has released 7 albums of primarily his own songs, and performs throughout the U.S. and occasionally Europe, when he takes the notion.

“To pin any one label on Crossland’s body of work would be a crime. It’s not country. It’s not rock. It sure as hell ain’t your daddy’s bluegrass! His characters and stories come alive to form an often dark, yet highly humorous interpretation of the American Experience.” (Marcus Huff- Laramie Zine) Kanky songs about drinkin’, fightin’, hobos, roughnecks, trailer park fires, and little neighborhood dogs that bite, are lent their truth-is-stranger-than-fiction wobble by virtue of the fact that Jalan was raised and resides in a rural mountain town, population >300. “He casts a sardonic but affectionate eye on the roughhewn lives of Western people. Crossland’s ‘Big Horn Mountain Blues’ is so popular in Wyoming that it is practically the official state song.” (Michael Segell- New York Times)

Some folks call it a western music show; some call it a stand-up comedy show with masterful cowboy music; others call it the best musical experience in the west.  Call it what you want to, the fact remains the Bar J Wranglers from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, deliver some of the purest harmony, best musicianship and funniest ranch humor ever seen on stage.  As soon as the Bar J Wranglers take to the stage, listeners leave behind their busy life and settle into a time long ago - a time of the singing cowboy.

From early in the 1800s cowboys rode the western range. On the cattle drive, every long, hard day in the saddle was followed by an evening meal, tall tales and music around the chuckwagon.  The Bar J Wranglers will entertain the entire family as they take you down memory trail with songs, stories, comedy, yodeling, fiddling and more!  Experience an evening you'll never forget.

A native of Japan, Kuniko Yamamoto received her Bachelor of Psychology from Otani University of Kyoto, Japan in 1983. She started performing professionally in her hometown of Osaka where she grew up studying traditional dance, music and theater. She has received national exposure performing Japanese Storytelling at the Silk Road International Exposition and on Kansai National TV in 1985. In 1986, Kuniko traveled to the United States to study with Tony Montanaro, highly respected mime and actor. Three years later, she began touring with Leland Faulkner Light Theater, and for five years she has performed consistently in theaters, schools, colleges, and festivals across the country, including the Kennedy Center and Disney’s Epcot. In 1992, Kuniko moved to Florida and married Jon LeClair, a world-renowned magician. In the last two decades she has been presenting her programs throughout the United States, also recognized by the Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina of Arts Council since 2000.

A passionate origami folder, Kuniko received Tempo Award from Origami USA in 2007

Toni Y. Yagami started playing Taiko with Denver Taiko (1979-88) and was a performing member of San Jose Taiko, a professional performing taiko group from 1988 to 1995, when she returned to Denver. Toni is also a performing member of TAIKOZA (based in New York City) and has toured with this group throughout the U.S. and Europe.  She has performed in Carnegie Hall.

Lance B. Acker, whose true profession is a jazz reed man (including 21 years with the Queen City Jazz Band), has been playing taiko and takebue (Japanese flute) since 1996. He has studied the bamboo flute with Marco Lienhard (of Ondekoza and Taikoza). Balancing taiko performances with his Acker Jazztet gigs, as well as a full roster of private woodwind students, can sometimes be a challenge!

To Cory McDaniel and Dale Bohren, an ARTCORE show is not just another gig, it is an opportunity! This pair has played far and wide. That’s easy to see in their eclectic performance with only one guitar, a string bass and a pair of vocals. This Casper duet

have produced many years’ of ARTCORE shows, and never once has one been the same as another. But they are all memorable. Join us February 20 for the Tremors 2016 ARTCORE show. It will be a fun show they say is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Colcannon formed in 1984 in Boulder Colorado, and its reputation has grown steadily over the years with the release of eight CDs on the Oxford Road Records label. The band’s recent CD ‘The Pooka and the Fiddler’ received a Parent’s Choice Award for its artful interweaving of music and storytelling. The Emmy®-award winning PBS special, “Colcannon in Concert,” filmed at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts has aired nationwide.

Colcannon was named ensemble-in-residence at The Colorado College, the first non-classical musical group to be awarded this position.

Colcannon has also been part of many collaborative projects – they were featured on John McEuen's soundtrack for the television mini-series "The Wild West", as well as on the Western Heritage Award winning album of the same name and The Nashville Network Television special "The Music of the Wild West". The group has provided music for an audio project "Secrets of the World – The Good People" featuring Irish master storyteller and folklorist Eddie Lenihan.

Colcannon’s appeal crosses lines of age, gender and ethnic background. For while the musical focus is on the beautiful wealth of traditional Irish music – all acoustic instrumentation, traditional as well as original tunes and songs, with some of the songs in Mick’s native Irish language – Colcannon’s true message is the story of the resilient and joyous human spirit.

Colcannon has developed a distinctive, inventive, and contemporary musical style while still keeping in firm touch with the heart and essence of traditional Irish music. Colcannon’s concerts are renowned for their energy, for singer/frontman Mick Bolger’s irrepressible sense of humor and sly wit, and, of course, for the music; music that expresses flights of joy, deep sorrows, and an unquenchable zest for life.

The dance floor will be waiting for you!

The first Glenn Miller Orchestra did not make it at all. It was a total and absolute economic failure. But Glenn knew what he wanted, held to that dedication and relentlessly worked to succeed. He launched his second band – the one that lives on today – in March of 1938. The Glenn Miller Orchestra has been a “hit” ever since.

The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all dance bandleaders back in the Swing Era of the 1930s and 40s. A matchless string of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts and the drawing power at theatres, hotels and dance pavilions, built and sustained the momentum of popularity.

Glenn disbanded his musical organization in 1942 at the height of its popularity to volunteer for the Army. There, he organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It

went to Europe to entertain servicemen performing numerous live and radio shows. On December 15, 1944, Major Miller took off in a single engine plane from Europe to precede his band to France, disappearing over the English Channel, never to be seen again.

With the release of the major motion picture THE GLENN MILLER STORY, featuring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson in 1954, interest and popular demand led the Miller Estate to authorize the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra. On June 6, 1956, and under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance, the reformed Glenn Miller Orchestra performed its first concert and has been on the road ever since. Since January 2012, vocalist Nick Hilscher leads the band.

Just as it was in Glenn’s day, the Glenn Miller Orchestra today is still the most sought after big band in the world.

Ivory Fantasy – The new Style of Piano Music! Classic music need not always be Classical.

Would we connect Michael Jackson with traditional lullabies? And what has an earthy Delta blues to do with the mood of a Norwegian dawn? To find the answers to these questions we need to look into ‘Ivory Fantasy’, the latest project of the artist Nina McIntire, who is compositionally fusing the most famous works of great masters of past centuries with modern hits. The result is an incredibly revolutionary style of modern popular piano music with a sound which is so unique, so dynamic, so explosive, the resulting sparks burst into a musical display of fireworks that must be seen and heard to be believed.

Fans and followers of Nina McIntire who describe the ease with which she performs on the piano as 'child's play' could often be taken literally. This talented artist and performer, born and raised in St. Petersburg, was playing her first songs on the piano almost before she could walk.

This extraordinary musical talent certainly did not go unnoticed when, at the tender age of four, she took up the violin, the instrument which accompanied her during her professional musical studies in Moscow.

At the age of 24 she completed her degree in Master of the Fine Arts at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and was soon an extremely sought-after violin soloist, giving concerts world-wide.

Her love for the piano has never waned and she has recently been very active on the international music scene as a pianist, presenting her latest project 'Ivory Fantasy', a fascinating combination of classical music and her own compositions arranged in a revolutionary modern style, integrating a variety of musical genres such as ragtime, jazz, pop and blues. The popularity of this project is already reflected in the extremely successful concerts in Finland, Russia, Germany and the United States.

Nathan Baker is the music theory coordinator at Casper College, where he teaches courses in music theory, aural skills, and music technology, as well as offering private lessons in music composition. In addition to his academic interests (featuring research ranging from his master's thesis discovering the logic behind harmonic progressions in Arnold Schoenberg's early atonal music—a discovery significant enough to earn a listing in "Who's Who in America"—to musical style and meaning in Japanese video games), Baker is an active performer on the trombone. Baker is second trombonist with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and the Powder River Symphony, principal trombonist with the Casper Municipal Band, a member

of the Dem Bones trombone quartet, and has played with the Blues Brothers, the percussion quintet Sympatico, the Casper Brass and Storm Door Company, and in various musical theatre productions at Utah State University, the University of Oregon, and Casper College. Originally from Missoula, Montana, Baker received the B.Mus. in music education and music composition from Utah State University in 2002, where he studied trombone with Dr. Todd Fallis; earned the M.A. in music theory from the University of Oregon in 2006, where he studied trombone with Dr. Jeff Williams; and completed the coursework for the Ph.D. in music theory and music history from the University of Oregon.

Hailing from the Great Plains of eastern South Dakota, folk and Americana singer/songwriter Jami Lynn began performing country jamborees at the age of 13. It took little coaxing from her grandfather to make the transition from the audience to the stage, where old-time country, polka, and regional folk music reigned supreme. A few years later while studying classical voice at The University of South Dakota, Jami recorded her first album, Dreamer.

Her undergraduate thesis, “Early American Folk Music of the Upper Midwest” began as a typical slap-it-together-and-call-it–good paper turned into an intensive year of research resulting in academic presentations in museums, libraries, and historical societies, and most importantly, the recording of Sodbusters, her second full length album.

Inspired by stories of her ancestors’ trek from the East coast to the Dakota Territory, the title track of Sodbusters offers the perspective of Jami Lynn’s great-great grandmother, Lydia Huff. In addition to

six original songs, the album features five folk songs from the South Dakota area. A lumbering ballad from the forests of Minnesota, a Norwegian lullaby, an Irish folk tune, and a cowboy ballad from the open range compliment her own artfully crafted folk songs. Sodbusters was not only featured in The Smithsonian’s Shared Harmonies Project, but also caught the attention of international critics in France and the Netherlands.

Her latest effort, Fall Is a Good Time to Die, is inspired by the landscapes and animals of the Dakota prairie and Black Hills. The album was mixed and edited by Eddie Faris of Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, and self produced by Jami and bandmates Andrew Reinartz (bass) and Dalton Coffey (dobro).

Jami Lynn also brings folk music to elementary students through the South Dakota State Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools program and Touring Artists program. Jami is currently based out of Spearfish, South Dakota.
