On Saturday, May 16, 2009, officers and members of the Executive Committee of the Effingham Branch NAACP attended the State NAACP Centennial Freedom Fund Cele-bration. They accompanied Mrs. Margaret Perkins How-ard, The Woman-Of-The-Year for The Effingham Branch. The event took place at the Carolina Coliseum, Columbia,

SC.

There were musical performances by the Sankofa Drummers, a number of selections by Richland Northeast High School Gospel and Praise (GAP) Choir and a stirring performance by Miss Briana Nurse, a guest soloist! The guest Pianist was Dr. Timothy Sligh, Sr. They were all from

Columbia, SC.

The winner of the Centennial Woman-Of-The-Year for South Carolina was Mrs. Dorothy Cunningham of the Colum-bia Branch. February 2010, she will represent South Carolina

at the Image Award Ceremony in California.

The Keynote speaker was Human Right Activist, Ms. Nontombi Naomi Tutu, the daughter of Mr. Desmond Tutu.

She spoke about the disparities of growing up in Apartheid South Africa. She said, “We are not free until we tell our sto-ries; we need to bring hope and change to our communities.” She also said, “There are many young people who are doing good things, and we need to notice the good things they are

doing!”

Two citizens from our area were recognized: Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty was a student leader during the Civil Rights Movement and the late Attorney Mordecai C. Johnson was a lawyer during the movement. Attorney Johnson was recog-nized by the Honorable Judge Matthew Perry, an icon of the Civil Rights Era. Judge Perry said, “With the help of the late Attorney Mordecai Johnson and other lawyers from around

the state, they turned things around about 180 degrees!”

The oldest known Life Members of the South Carolina NAACP who were recognized included: Mrs. Donella Wilson, 100 years old and Mrs. Bertha Bailey, 101 years old. They

both walked to the platform and spoke very intelligently!

Effingham Branch NAACP Members Attended The State NAACP Centennial Freedom Fund Celebration

"For affliction does not come from the dust, Nor does trouble sprout from the ground, For man is born for trouble, As sparks fly upward. But as for me, I would seek God, And I would place my cause before God; Who does great and unsearchable things, Wonders without number. He gives rain on the earth And sends water on the fields, So that He sets on high those who are lowly,

And those who mourn are lifted to safety. (Job 5:6-11 NASB ) Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto Thee will I pray. My voice shalt Thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee, and will look up. (Psalm 5:1-3 KJV ) Thanks be unto God for His wonderful gift: Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God is the object of our faith; the only faith that saves is faith in Him. “

Scriptures of the Month-Trust God, Even When You Feel Weak And Powerless Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:8-10 NIV )

Father God, we look to You and say, Thank You. Thank You for the many blessings, those that are known and unknown, seen and unseen. As we look to You, our future is full of promise… because we discern Your forces of evolution at work around us. Every beautiful flower and every growing child tells us the future is not fearsome, but it is full of promise! Father God, we turn to You in faith and confidence.

Have mercy, O loving God, upon those who are experiencing difficulties of life. Remove the fears that befalls them. Endow them with courage in their struggle to recover what has been lost. Grant us strength and hope to envision new days ahead and a spirit of faith to take the risk of living fully once again.

Lord, bless this church family. May the sun of many days and years shine upon this congre-gation; May the love of God be shared, one for another and may it hold us close; May the true light of God guide us on our spiritual journey; May our dreams come true, but when they do not, may we be blessed with new dreams. Father God, bless us so that each of us may bring more love and truth into this place! May we be instruments that sustain You in all tasks involved. And when… when we look back, we can say, with the love of God in our hearts, “Because of You, I have lived the life God wanted me to live, because of You, I have become the person God wanted me to be.”

Oh Lord, You who hast mercy upon all, take away our sins, and mercifully kindle in us the fire of the Holy Spirit. Remove that heart of stone and give us the love to adore Thee, a heart to delight Thee and a heart to follow and enjoy Thee.

Father God, refresh and gladden our spirit. Bless our pastor and his family. Let this congre-gation be reminded that we must Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him for His mighty acts; Praise Him according to His abundant greatness. Let everything that hath breath, praise Him!

Father God, for the joy within our hearts and the many blessing you have given us, we give thanks to You! Amen, Amen, Amen.

KEEP DRIVING… Submitted By: Liz Walker

One day, a young lady was driving along and her father was with her. It began to storm. The young lady asked her father what should she do? He said, "Keep driving." Cars began to pull over to the side of the road because the storm was getting worse. “What should I do?” the young lady asked. "Keep driving," her father replied. Soon, she noticed eighteen- wheelers were pull-ing over.

She said, “Dad, I must pull over, I can barely see ahead. It is terrible! Everyone is pulling over!” Her father told her not to give up, just keep driving. The storm was terrible, but she never stopped driving! Soon, she could see a little clearer. After a couple of miles, she was on dry land and the sun was out. Her father said, “Now pull over and get out”. She said, "Why now?" He said, "Get out; look back at all the people who gave up and are still in the storm. You never gave up and now your storm is over!”

Editor’s Comment: This is a testimony for anyone who is going through something. When everyone gives up, you should not. If you keep going, your storm will soon be over and the sun will shine upon your face again.

This month’s Savannah Shout-Out goes to Sister Iris S. Gladden.

Sister Gladden serves the SGBC Family as: Facilitator of the Wednesday Noon Day Bible Study Class, Facilitator of the Ladies Sunday School Class, member of the Seniors Group, Co-

Chairperson of The Echo Staff and oh, in so many other areas, seen and unseen! THANK YOU Sister Gladden! Please know, we, The SGBC Family, are VERY proud of you and your talents!

Rear Adm. Michelle Howard Assumes Command Of Counter-Piracy Task Force CTF 151, ESG 2

WHOA! Nope, this is one you DIDN'T HEAR on the news. The ship that rescued the Maersk-Alabama's captain was skip-pered by a BLACK FEMALE REAR ADMIRAL? Get OUT! If you're like me, you briefly saw her in some news clips, and (like me) you probably figured she was a medical tech.

YOU GO, GIRL! In an ideal world, this SHOULDN'T BE "news;" Anymore than it should be "news" that we have female B-52 pilots Black admirals or a Black President!

Hydrogen Peroxide The Green Alternative

Chlorine bleach is a chemical that most of us have in our homes. It's very handy for multiple applications, including cleaning and disinfecting, but it may not be earth friendly. A good alterna-tive to consider is Hydrogen Peroxide.

Most of the debate about chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite) stems from its ability to form more toxic byproducts such as dioxin, fu-rans and other organochlorines, when it reacts with other elements.

Hydrogen Peroxide is simply water with an extra oxygen molecule (H2O2). It is certainly kinder on the environment. H2O2 is produced by both animal and plant cells; it is formed naturally, in the environment, by sunlight acting on water.

Many industrial bleaching operations, such as those used in the production of paper, are in-creasing their use of Hydrogen Peroxide for a greener bleaching process. It is the active ingre-dient in many "oxygen" bleaches which are used for lightening hair color.

Please be careful when purchasing and han-dling this substance; some commercially avail-able "food grade" Hydrogen Peroxide is 35% pure, highly corrosive and can be toxic or fatal if ingested.

Hydrogen Peroxide should be diluted to 3% as a base for most applications. It is readily avail-able in 3% solution from your local pharmacy or drugstore. This is probably the preferable and safer way to buy it, especially if you can take your empty bottles back for exchange or a refill. That will help reduce the cost.

If you choose to dilute a 35% solution your-self, add the hydrogen peroxide to distilled water;

wear gloves, body and eye protection when doing this.

Hydrogen Peroxide Tips And Uses * Keep it out of direct sunlight, in a cool

place. Exposure to the sun and heat will quickly reduce it to oxygen and water and render it inef-fective. Store it in a dark bottle and keep it out of children’s reach.

* Dip your toothbrush into a 3% solution of Hydrogen Peroxide solution to help kill bacteria on the brush, after brushing.

* A tablespoon of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution, in a cup of water, can be used as a mouthwash. Swish for up to 60 seconds once a day; don't swallow and be sure to rinse your mouth afterwards. This also helps whiten your teeth.

* A 3% solution of Hydrogen peroxide, ap-plied to a cloth, can be used to clean bench tops and cutting boards. This will kill salmonella and other bacteria

*Fill a spray bottle with 1/2 3% solution and 1/2 water; use this as a bathroom and toilet disin-fectant and cleaner. This combination is espe-cially useful if you have a septic, greywater or black water treatment system because it won't harm the bacteria in the treatment areas. The Hydrogen Peroxide will have diluted to a point that renders it harmless through its interaction with the flushing water.

* Mix 3% Hydrogen Peroxide with two parts water (in a spray bottle) and use it on areas af-fected by mold. You can try a neat 3% solution for bathroom tiling; be careful of the strength used on painted items. It may bleach them.

* Make a whitening toothpaste by mixing baking soda and enough 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to form a paste

* Use 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to sterilize cuts and abrasions; the fizzing which will occur is nor-mal.

* To help kill bacteria, such as E. Coli, on fruits and vegetables, add a quarter cup of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to a sink full of cold water. Immerse, rinse the fruits and or vegetable with cold water and drain. Killing bacteria will also help keep fruit and vegetables fresher longer. You can also use a spray bottle containing a 50/50 mixture of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and wa-ter; spray and rinse the fruit and or vegetable.

CONGRATULATIONS! This is your season! You’re off to great places! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. Some of you are on your own. It’s up to you to decide your future. Believe in your dreams! The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Please understand, graduation is a con-cept. In real life, you graduate everyday. Graduation is a process that contin-ues until the last day of your life. When you understand that, you’ll make a difference in your life and in the lives of those around you.

Your time is limited. Don’t waste it living someone else’s dream. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

A cuppa Java is good for more than a quick pick-me-upper.

Move over, green tea! Recent studies indicate that coffee drinkers are less likely to develop Alz-heimer's disease, colon cancer and diabetes when compared to non-drinkers. They're also less apt to die from heart disease. Coffee isn't for everyone. It can cause insomnia, anxiety and irregular heartbeat in some people. If coffee is your drink of choice, let's look at some of the ways coffee can boost your health.

A study found that people who drank three to five cups of coffee a day, at midlife, were sixty-five per cent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease in their latter years. Other research suggest that the caffeine in coffee may reduce the production of the protein beta-amyloidal deposits which often form in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

Research indicates, drinking coffee lowers the risk of developing type 2 diabetes; this includes people at high risk for the disease. Former coffee drinkers were less likely to develop the disease than those who never drank it.

Consuming caffeinated coffee, an hour before vigorous exercise, may help prevent pain while working out. This result is centered around young men as well as young women.

An ea r l i e r study suggests, drinking coffee is protection against gout, a painful ar-thritic condition of the joints. Decaf also was associ-ated with a modest reduction in risk. This suggests that something other than caffeine is responsible for the beneficial effect.

Coffee may help to keep the memory sharp. Older women, who drank more than three cups a day, experienced less decline on memory tests. Tea drinkers enjoyed similar benefits, so caffeine may be the beneficial component.

The study also indicated a lower risk of Parkin-son’s disease, as well as strokes, is related to cof-fee drinking.

I submit this letter as a human interest story to give you, the members of SGBC, a Praise report. Your prayers for our enlisted Sisters and Brothers are truly appreciated. Continue to lift them up in Prayer because we know Prayer changes things! Hallelujah!!

Tuesday, 26 May 2009 Good Morning Min. Crews, Thanks so much for the beautiful e-Card. It really made my morning. My Memorial Day was pretty steady with the normal routine of work. I constantly count my blessings

each day that I wake up, and I am able to do so many things others can't do. That, with-in itself, is a true bless-ing! My time is drawing near; I have 4 months and 5 days left. We all have to stay vigilant and prayed up as we ap-proach the finish line. I will return to Germany in October and depart for the last time in December, heading back to The States. I plan to take two and one half weeks of “leave time” before I go to Kansas, for 10 months, to attend my next military school. So, I'm mentally preparing for my next move back to The States. I will make sure to visit you all at The Grove when I'm back on U. S. soil. Thanks again for all the prayers you and the other members at The Grove are “sending-up” on my behalf. Continue to keep us (my Soldiers and me) uplifted in prayer. Until we meet again, stay safe and be blessed!

Many blessings to you,

Christine

One For You, One For Me

On the outskirts of town, there was a huge nut tree by the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled a bucket with nuts, sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me," said one boy. The bucket was so full, several nuts

rolled off toward the fence.

Cycling down the road, by the cemetery, came a third boy. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me." He thought he knew what it was. "Oh my," he shud-dered, "It's Satan and St. Peter dividing the souls in the

cemetery!"

He cycled down the road as fast as he could, until he found an old man with a cane, hobbling along. "Come here quick!" said the boy, "You won't believe what I heard. Satan and St. Peter are down at the cemetery dividing the souls!" The old man said, "Shooo, you brat! Can't you see I'm find-

ing it hard to walk, as it is?"

But after several pleas, the old man finally hobbled to the cemetery. While standing by the fence, they heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me..." The old man whispered, "Boy, you were telling the truth! Let's see if we

can see the devil himself."

Shivering with fear, they peered through the fence. They were unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars, of the fence, tighter and

tighter, as they tried to get a glimpse of Satan.

At last they heard, "One for you, one for me. And one last one for you. That's all. Now let's go get those nuts by the fence and we'll be done." It was said, the old guy made

it back to town five minutes before the boy!!

There is a chill because they said it would be a cold day in hell before a Black man became President! Tell em to bundle up!!!!!!!!! They said, "It ain't over till the Fat Lady sings," - so Obama handed the microphone to Aretha!!

Stories To Warm Your Heart We are so involved in our personal, daily endeavors that we fail to recognize, we are blessed beyond our

Hydrogen Peroxide, Continued from page 5

* instead of bleach, add one cup of 3% Hy-drogen Peroxide to your whites when washing.

* Remove bloodstains from clothing by blot-ting the stain with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, then rinse promptly, with cold water, to avoid bleach-ing the fabric.

* To remove yellowing from lace curtains or tablecloths, fill a sink with cold water and 2 cups of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide. Soak the item for at least one hour, rinse in cold water and air dry.

So, there you have it! Hydrogen Peroxide can not only be a more earth friendly replace-ment for chlorine bleach, but around your home, it has many other uses!

While researching this article, I found all sorts of weird and wonderful tips related to in-gesting and inhaling Hydrogen Peroxide. Some claimed cures for cancer and many other ail-ments. PLEASE, CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE INGESTING HYDROGEN PEROX-IDE! It can be quite corrosive in higher concen-trations and it may cause damage to your respi-ratory and digestive tracts.

GRILLED

SHRIMP

16 jumbo, raw shrimp, deveined in shell, 1/2 cup Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing Coarse salt and black pepper 2 lemons, halved Preheat griddle or grill pan over high heat. But-terfly shrimp by slicing almost through length-wise, but leave shell on shrimp. This will keep the shrimp tender while grilling over such high heat. Brush shrimps with oil, season with salt and pepper and grill 2 minutes on each side, until shells are hot pink and shrimp is opaque. Place lemons on grill the last minute. The heat will release the juice from the lemons. To serve, squeeze grilled lemon wedges over shrimp.
