    Dear Disciples,

I love this photograph. It was taken last week in front of one of the cabins that make up the three cabin Kinsmen Vil-lage made possible by 130 pledges to the three year A Place for All People capital campaign that began June 1. There is still time to participate. Cam-paign cards and envelopes are available at the Welcome Center --- simply place your card and envelope in the offering plate. Donations may also be given online.

I love the photograph for several differ-ent reasons. It is a tangible example of experiencing family, sharing grace, inten-tional faith formation, and extraordinary generosity.

ing shape the faith of youth and their families at Kinsmen than my congrega-tion in Iowa. One of the great develop-ments since I have been a pastor in the ELCA is an emphasis on Youth and Fam-ily ministry as a career choice rather than a stepping stone to something else. The Rev. David Anderson, referred to on page 3, is a prime example. When the Kinsmen Call Committee visited St. Mark in West Des Moines, one of the comments Denise Cook and Colette Edwards made con-cerned the vibrancy and spirit they felt when they walked the hallways of the learning house. Pastor Anderson is a good friend of mine who helped launch a revival at St. Mark in the Youth and Family Ministry. He is a dynamic preacher and I hope you will join Pastor Mark and me in welcoming David to Kinsmen on July 10 and 11.

    See you in worship!

    In Christ,

    Jeffery Alvestad, Pastor

Now that I am a pastor of a large congre-gation, as much as I would like to say it was worship, education, and youth events in the congregation I was a part of that shaped my faith, it was really at camp where I most learned to love Jesus. I have stared and prayed over this photo-graph a long time and I encourage you to do so as well. I have prayed that the experiences of family with fellow young people and the intentional faith forma-tion embedded in a week away at Lu-therhill will help shape the faith of our confirmation students for a lifetime.

The photograph is also another example of disciples at Kinsmen practicing extraor-dinary generosity. The last capital cam-paign that was conducted in 2006 in a far more robust economy received 89 pledges and raised $300,000 to launch a new congregation. We have already exceeded that amount and received 130 pledges in a fragile economic climate. I am projecting we will have raised $400,000 by the end of the campaign. Thank you! Well done good and faithful servants.

Pastor Mark is far more effective in help-

    About this ministry

This Committee provides shawls and support to Kinsmen members, as well as their families and friends at a bap-tism or when they are facing grief, ill-ness, or crisis. Six prayer shawls were distributed in June.

    July Noisy offering: Reach Unlimited

As our northwest area grows, the need for additional services to our graduating population of young adults with devel-opmental disabilities also grows. Our vision is to double the size of our Learn-ing Activity Center within the next 5 years.

Please join us for a tour of the Learning Activity Center at 12 PM: July 14, 28; August 11, 24; September 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; October 6, 20; November 10, or December 8. The Learning Activity Cen-ter is located at 11832 Mueller Ceme-tery Road, Cypress, 77429. Contact Kris Lusebrink ([email protected] or 281-213-8132) for reservations.

All donations received help support the Learning Activity Center, as there is a $3,100 gap between funding received from the state Medicaid program and the cost of services.

Reach Unlimited is dedicated to provid-ing quality support services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Today there are fourteen homes that offer supported living in neighborhoods from Tomball to Spring Branch. To meet the growing need for meaningful day programs, the Learning Activity Center opened in January 2005, Today over 250 people are enrolled, with another 100 plus on the waiting list. At Reach, the focus is on the individ-uals abilities, not disabilities. The result is that more than 50 clients have jobs in the community. A growing number of local and regional businesses also em-ploy Reach clients to perform contract work at the Learning Activity Center. In addition, clients are paid to create gift items that are sold in the Enterprise Programs gift shop. Everybody at Reach earns a paycheck!

Rev. Dr. David W. Ander-son will be preaching the weekend of July 10 & 11. He is a presenter, coach, and author at Vibrant Faith Ministries in Bloom-ington, MN. He has been instrumental in developing an approach to Christian discipleship and evangelismthe Vi-brant Faith Frame (formerly known as The Child In Our Hands Initiative)and resources to accompany it. He is also the co-developer of the Hand in Hand Congregational Training events that tailor the Vibrant Faith Frame to individ-ual congregations. Dr. Anderson is an ecumenically and internationally recog-nized leader in faith and family life en-richment. Dr. Anderson has been a seminary and college instructor, author, editor of adult Christian curriculum at Augsburg Fortress Publishers, parish pastor, and hospital chaplain.

  • Nam Gift Cards To meet our Scriptural obligation to reach out and help others in need, Kinsmen supports vari-ous charities. However, there is one charity sup-ported by Kinsmen that

is different from all the rest, and it is a local charity that is part of us. Almost 30 years ago, at the depth of an oil-market bottom, home prices fell, and our neighborswithout jobs and in extreme economic hardshipsought help from churches and religious organizations in this area. Some of the same folks went from church to church asking for assis-tance. Ten pastors, multiple priests, and a rabbi got together and decided that there had to be a more efficient way to provide aid. Accordingly, their congrega-tions pooled resources and formed Northwest Assistance Ministries, or NAM, which has now grown to a multi-program social services organi-zation supported by almost 40 congregations and a number of civic organiza-tions.

Reaching out, helping others, and sup-porting charities all comes at a cost, whether that may be in the form of monetary donations, giving in kind ob-jects of value, or volunteering our time. At Kinsmen, we donate money to NAM through Noisy Offerings. Individual mem-bers also give directly to the charity. We have held food drives and maintained collection bins for NAMs resale shops, and of course, many of us bring used items directly to NAMs location. Also, many of our church members give time to support NAMs activities, including Harlan Martens and Woody Lyons, who have been selflessly serving on NAMs Executive Board.

as well as a report on the receipt stating the remaining balance. The Kroger card is good forever and can be reloaded and reused. NAM receives regular printouts and payments from Kroger on the amounts loaded into every card.

NAM gift cards are typically sold on the first Sunday of each month at the Wel-come Center. They are available after the Saturday 5:30 PM service, and Sun-day 8:15 and 11 AM services. If you are planning on purchasing a card at the 9:30 AM Sunday service, they will be available before it starts. The cards can be purchased with cash or checks made payable to NAM.

Sales of NAM gift cards have been han-dled by Andy Chow for a number of years. When asked about how the gift card program has changed, he said, When I first started, we had gift certifi-cates before plastics became the norm. It was somewhat unnerving to carry around over $5000 of freely negotiable instruments as church members bought well over $3000 worth of gift certifi-cates on any given Sunday. Now, there are weekends where sales are less than $500. A number of reasons have caused this, as the grocery business is very competitive here in Houston. HEB has taken sales away from Kroger and Randalls, and Randalls just has not been the same since Safeway took over. As for Kroger, the switch to a reusable and reloadable card dropped some of the NAM supporters. I think some of the folks who bought Kroger certificates before are simply not reloading the cards now, as the reloading dollars are just not showing up in the printouts. Most of all, people leave Kinsmen and move away, in some cases to see our Lord. There has not been a back fill of new supporters and buyers of gift cards.

    Continued on Page 5

Of course, there are limits on the goods and services that we can afford to donate to NAM as well as to other charitable causes. There is, however, a channel for us to raise money for NAM without costing us anything. The NAM gift cards program does exactly that. Three merchants offer gift cards to NAM as part of their public affairs effort to support local charities: Lubys, Randalls (Safeway), and Kroger.

Lubys and Randalls gift cards work the same way. Lubys gift cards are $25 each, and Randalls are $50 each. Both merchants give NAM a small discount off the face value, and whenever a NAM supporter purchases a Lubys or Randalls gift card from NAM, NAM automatically recovers its investment plus a small profit by the amount of the original purchase discount. Supporters who purchase the gift cards from NAM will receive full face value of the gift

cards at the merchants stores. Therefore, it costs the users nothing to generate revenues for NAM. The gift cards for Randalls can also be

used at other grocery stores throughout the country, such as Vons or Safeway.

Kroger gift cards work somewhat differ-ently, as they are sold by NAM at $1 each. This is the holding amount in each card at the start, and the cards have to be loaded at a stores customer service counter. Each card can be loaded any time with any amount and can be paid for as any purchase at Kroger. Since the card is already regis-tered to NAM, Kroger automatically pays a 3% percentage of the loaded amount to NAM. Like the other mer-chants, the cardholder will receive full value of the cards amount at check out,

Does hearing the word marathon make you shake in your shoes? Thats okay, come out and join Team NAM anyway. Youll be glad you helped a neighbor, NAM.

    Continued from page 4

Further asked about why he continues selling NAM gift cards in such a declin-ing environment, Andy added, Well, you always hope that things will im-prove. There are still a number of regu-lar card purchasers, and it just makes my day when big hitters like Peggy Ed-monds and Jerry Avant show up at the Welcome Center on Sunday morning with their checks already made out to NAM. Also, I run into various church members on occasion at Kroger and Randalls, and I keep hoping that they would eventually show up and buy some gift cards to support NAM.

We all eat and need to shop for grocer-ies. We may not go to Kroger or Ran-dalls exclusively, but most of us do shop at these stores some time. Kindly con-sider your support of NAM and buy some gift cards at no net cost to you.

The next time NAM gifts cards will be available for purchase at the Welcome Center will be the first Sunday in July, over independence day weekend. We will be praying that you decide to stop by.

Media/Communications Update I think we can all agree that technology is a very useful and beneficial tool when the issues are corrected and a usable system is developed. Hopefully this up-date will provide some insight on some of the issues we have been facing here at Kinsmen, and how we have been over-coming them.

    Website

A strong website is important for a church that wants to be successful in the 21st century, as it serves members and potential guests alike. Most of our guests report that they visited our website at least once before visiting. Members bene-fit as all the information is continuously updated and in a convenient place.

We are looking at a new hosting service that would be at a fraction of the cost of our current provider. We would have new levels of control with this new ser-vice, as we could edit any aspect of the site. There would be an overhead cost for this service, since the site has to be rebuilt and new software has to be purchased. The money would come back quickly however. The new site is slated to be released around August or September, and will have a similar look and feel to the current one.

The first change you will notice in the new site is that there will be a drop down for each of the links in the current menu bar. This allows for a more user friendly interface. New pages will be added such as a statement of beliefs, a history of Kins-men, a post visit survey for guests to fill out, a place to submit news, a photo gal-lery, and sermon audio and notes in addi-tion to the videos of the services. We will integrate Kinsmen more heavily into so-cial networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube, as well as encourage the online giving service recently added.

    Screens

The screens ministry is very important, as this not only serves as a convenience for the members, but it makes visitors that are not familiar with the liturgy and hym-

board: one on the equipment and the other on the computer software.

We are looking into options of adding additional wireless and handheld micro-phones in the future, as when we have a drama or special event, we are having to pull out the older style mics from the previous sound system.

    Video

The video ministry is coming farther each weekend it seems. Video is a very difficult process to do, as you have to have the settings just right for every-thing to work. It took lots of trials and errors to figure out these settings, and to develop a system that works.

So far we have had major success and praise with the online service videos and DVDs. We are looking at using the audio from the sermons to make CDs and MP3 podcast files. We might even make services downloadable on iTunes, but this is a very complicated and selec-tive process.

A major challenge with video is that it becomes necessary to mic everything. We do have the overhead choir mics, but these are not of the best quality, and they capture EVERY noise from the congregation. Only one of them cur-rently works, and this leads to an unbal-ance of sound on the recording.

We are also required to get a media release from everyone that appears in an element of a service that normally isnt present. We always record the 9:30 and 11 AM services, but you can stop by the booth and let us know if you have a special recording request.

    Lights

We are accessing our need of a new lighting system. If this does happen, it would be months and possibly years down the road. This would possibly include new house lights, a cage like rack from the roof that would house stage and spot lights, and the required light controller system.

    nal feel more comfortable.

We have a very nice sanctuary, but the disadvantage is that it was not designed for screens. The lights above wash out the front screens since the projectors are in the back of the room. We are working on moving the projectors closer to the front screens and having them hanging from the ceiling, as there would be fewer overhead lights to wash out the image.

A new computer with the more stable Windows 7 has been donated for use on the screens. The previous computer has been converted into a backup com-puter, so in the event the primary one fails, the service can be immediately switched to the backup. Something we would like to do in the future is install fullback monitors built into the altar and ambo that will display a watered down version of the screens, additional notes that can be sent from the media booth, as well as a clock.

This month we are working on connect-ing the cameras to the screens. This will help out during milestones and bap-tisms. Equipment has also been installed that will allow different things to be shown on each of the front screens. We have already tested this on a couple of Sundays.

One of the issues we have been experi-encing is changing the screens on time. Our perception is different than yours, plus different members in the congrega-tion have different opinions on when the slides should be changed. We are doing our best to compromise, and I would appreciate your suggestions.

    Sound

We are blessed to have a very nice sound system. Many churches only dream of having the sound equipment that we have.

One of the issues we have been facing is the turning on and off of the mics on time. This is becoming resolved as more than one person monitors the sound

    Media/Communications Update (Continued)

    Media Booth Upgrades

We are looking at various upgrades to our media booth.

A glare on the screens is becoming a major issue. Curtains have already been approved, and we are waiting for them to be made.

We have a table annexed to the side of the existing booth that contains our video equip-ment. In the future, we would like to build an extension onto the current booth to eliminate the need for this table.

    Volunteers Welcome

We used to have a strong volunteer base in media. When equipment was upgraded, we had to close down volunteering due to the fact that settings were changing every week, and it was too difficult to keep training people every week with something different.

We would like to build back up a strong Me-dia Team. No experience is required, but vol-unteers will have to have some observation hours and will have to work along with a mentor before they can be turned loose on the equipment. Media team workers have to develop a skill of being able to plug in and focus to the service. A lot of people underesti-mate the difficulty of being focused for hours straight on a weekend running services. It takes work, but anyone can achieve this goal if they are willing.

    Communications Coordinator Position

After Susan Emfinger left at the end of May to start her new job in Michigan, I took over her position as Media and Communications Coor-dinator for the summer since there was an immediate need. We will be accepting appli-cations for this position starting in August.

    Suggestions

When working in the media booth, things are in a different perspective than if you were sitting in the congregation. We always wel-come your suggestions, since you have a dif-ferent point of view. Please contact me at [email protected] or ext. 21 with your comments or questions.

PACK 440 SCOUT NEWS Summer is in full swing and Pack 440 is still active. At the beginning of June, we had our annual End of the Scouting Year picnic at Collins Park. Later in the month, we had scouts go to Day Camp. Despite the heat, the boys enjoyed them-selves. Each scout that attended Day Camp earned several belt loops, pins, and completed some rank requirements.

This month, the pack will be participat-ing in the Greenwood Forest 4th of July Parade. Later in the month, we will be at the Willowbrook Aerodrome for an af-ternoon of skating and really good AC.

Also on the schedule for the summer is a Webelos non-camping camping trip. The Webelos scouts will be at Spring Cypress Park for a long day of cooking, working on rank requirements, and maybe even some fun. The summer activities will finish up in August with the annual pool party and yearly pack planning session just before school starts.

Dont miss this important opportunity to be a part of one of Kinsmens biggest ministries of the year!

to put it in the fridge or oven. Please bring enough food to serve 8 people.

We are dividing by alphabetical groups based on last names for the food assign-ments:

A - I: Meat main dishes (chicken, brisket, pastas)

Volunteer at Camp Hope Would you like to share grace this summer in one of Kinsmens largest growing ministries? We are in desperate need of volunteer camp

nurses, volunteers for service projects, and volunteers for before and after camp care. Camp nurses would be on call to assist

pervision on off campus trips. Volunteers for before and after camp would assist with providing supervision for the kids and sign-in assistants for the parents. Please contact Pastor Mark ([email protected] or ext. 24) if you are interested in serving.

Basic re-sponsibilities would be supervising ill kids, bandaging up wounds, and filling out forms for parents with descriptions of the treatment given. This position is a essential for the camp! To the generous, mis-sion-minded people of Kinsmen:

As in past years of Camp Hope, we are pairing learning with service during the

three weeks. The first week will include collecting items and packing boxes to be given out around the world when emergencies happen. People usually flee their homes too quickly to grab essentials. Many times, Lutheran World Relief is the first organization to arrive and begin helping traumatized people, such as in Haiti.

    Each health kit includes:

    - One hand towel, dark color

smaller items in the washcloth; wrap washcloth and remaining items in the towel and tie securely with ribbons or yarn. Do not enclose the kit or any of its contents in plastic bags.

If youd rather make a monetary donation, please feel free to do so. Place it in offering plate marked Camp

Hope/Health Kits. The cost of shipping one LWR health kit overseas is $2.65

Thank you in advance for partnering with Camp Hope, if you so desire. The campers and families will also be partici-pating. Together, we can make a differ-ence here and around the world!

    - One washcloth, dark color

    - One bath-size bar (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in its original wrapping

    - One adult-size toothbrush in its origi-nal packaging

    - One sturdy comb, remove packaging

    - One metal nail file or nail clippers with file attached, remove packaging (do not substitute cardboard emery boards for the file)

    - Six Band-Aids (or similar brand), pref-erably to ; secure together with a rubber band

Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. All items should be new and in good condition. Wrap

Catch the Wave At Kinsmen This Summer Camp Hope 2010

Hi to everyone! Wel-come to Camp Hope 2010. We are so ex-cited about seeing everyone at Camp Hope this year, espe-

cially with our theme Catch the Wave.

This article gives Camp Hope partici-pants important information you will need to know prior to the start of Camp Hope.

    Camp Hope Dates and Leaders

Week One: July 12-16 Week Two: July 19-23 Week Three: July 26-30

The camp managers this year are Ste-ven Pate and Chase Wolter.

In the Morning / Check In / Drop Off

As you arrive in the morning, you may park in the semi-circle in front of the church courtyard or in one of the park-ing spots close to it. Once parked, bring your child into the first door on your right as you enter the courtyard. Once you enter, please check in at the red desk with our receptionist, Ms. Gigi. After you check in if you are dropping off for before camp (6:30-9:15 AM), you can send your child into the gym. If you are dropping off for the camp day (which is 9:15 AM3:45 PM), you will need to bring your child to his or her classroom. Please inform Ms. Gigi if your child is to be picked up by someone other than the person who signed the child in.

During the Camp Day / Drop Off / Pick Up

If you need to pick up or drop off your child during the day, please inform the camp managers. Instead of going to the red desk, you will need to pick up or drop off your child at the Kinsmen main office which is located near the side doors to the sanctuary in the church courtyard.

signed medical form. The camp staff will administer the medication at the indi-cated times. No medication will be given without a signed medical form.

    Splash Day

Splash days occur Tuesday and Thurs-day of every week. On splash days, have your child bring his or her swim-suit and a change of clothes. While we strongly encourage your child to partici-pate, we will have alternate activities for your child to participate in if he or she chooses not to get wet.

    Payment

If you have not paid for your child al-ready, drop off your payment at the Kinsmen front office. If you wish to wait until Camp Hope starts, please plan on paying the first Monday your child at-tends Camp Hope.

    Camp Hope on

Camp Hope will be on Twitter this year. We will be tweeting all throughout the camp days and welcome people who want to follow us.

Sign up if you do not have an account already at www.twitter.com. Then, go to www.twitter.com/camphope2010 and follow us.

We have control over who is allowed to follow us, and only people affiliated with Camp Hope will be admitted

    Camp Hope Newsletter

The Camp Hope newsletter will be sent home with your child Monday and Fri-day of each week. We encourage you to look over the newsletter as it con-tains important information about up-coming Camp Hope activities and past Camp Hope events. This year we are offering an online photo gallery of camp hope.

We look forward to having a great three weeks!

Afternoon / Check Out / Pick Up

As you arrive in the afternoon, you may park in the semi-circle in front of the church courtyard or in one of the park-ing spots close to it. If you are picking up at the end of the camp day (which is at 3:45 PM), you will need to go to the Welcome Center in the Narthex and check them out with Ms. Gigi, who will call for your child from the Narthex. However, if you are picking up during after camp (which is 3:45-6:30 PM), you will need to go to the red desk and talk to Ms. Gigi to check your child out. Ms. Gigi will call for your child from after camp, and your child will meet you at the red desk. Your child will only be released to the person who signed him or her in unless otherwise noted.

    Lunch / Hot Lunch

Everyday except for Wednesdays, your child will need to bring a sack lunch. Our snacks are not sufficient for a whole day. On Wednesdays, hot lunch will be provided to ALL campers this year. We have included the hot lunch fee in the total fee for each week.

    Camp Hope T-Shirts

Campers will receive their t-shirt(s) the first day they attend camp. The entire camp will wear their shirts on Friday of each

    week.

    Camper Groups

Campers are grouped by age, and we try our best to honor the friend request on the registration form. We are happy to discuss and possibly make a change to your childs group. Group changes will not occur on Mondays however. You can submit a request for a group change, and we will do all we can to accommodate your child.
