Layering is tricky in the Southeast Texas summer, but hereits achieved with a sleeveless razor print tank that pulls out thecoral of the pants layered under a breezy gauze tunic. The romanticsleeves also provide benecial ventilation. With so many interest-

And, to make your pedicure last, ask your nail techabout Shellac polish, a hybrid solution that uses UVrays to seal polish to nails. It takes a bit longer toapply, but Shellac nails are instantly dry (no more fear

of smearing!), do not damage nail beds and the shineand color last for a minimum of 14 days. Shower, goswimming or go to the beach because your Shellactoes will never chip or fade. Its truly incredible!

some incredible local spas, with skilled

technicians trained in the art of the latestand greatest pedicure techniques.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, ExfoliateDry, scaly skin is an assault to the senses and a glaring sign of

winter neglect. Luckily, a quick fix can be found at Beau Visagein Nederland. Relax and RejuvenateStress is a highly visible emotion,

howing up everywhere, including theondition of your skin. Did you know thatrelaxing spa pedicure can instantly

ncrease and improve circulation, resultingn more radiant, rejuvenated skin? To aidn this process, Calders Mane Event and

Day Spa in Beaumont employs hot stonesn some pedicure packages. Massagingegs and feet with soothing lavender oil,

pedicurists then knead the warm stonesnto important acupressure points in theeet. The process not only relaxes tense

muscles, but also leaves your feet moreyouthful and gleaming.

Stay in HarmonyAll toes are not created equal.

n fact, many of us have a couple ofoes that seem to originate from some

cary, alien planet. To eliminate any odddistractions, some clients prefer acrylicr gel toenail treatments.

Pedicures are a great way to getyour feet in shape for the summer, saidBeth West, owner of Beau Visage Salon.

But, for clients with tiny toenail beds,we recommend the gel or acrylic nails.t gives your toes a more uniform looknd youll look better in yourummer sandals.

Available at most salons, acrylic andel nails create an even harmony betweenll your toes. But, be prepared to pay

more for the service, followed bydditional maintenance as your

    nail grows.

Get CreativeThe basic red toenails can get a little

boring after awhile. To spice up yourpedicure, think outside of the matchy-matchy box. With a little creativity, toenail design can be quite the artisticexperience. Many qualified pedicuristlike to experiment with hand-

painted motifs, cute decals andbright mixtures of coordinatingpolish. At Christus HealthyLiving Spa clients are treated to aunique, personalized experience, right down to the polish on theirpinky toes. Salon technicians canhand-paint one-of-a-kind looksor even theme your nails for theholidays and seasons.

Because youre likelywearing sandals, summer is awonderful time to experimentwith bright colors and designs, said

Todd Haymon, Corporate Spa Directorof Christus Healthy Living Spa. Allowyour nail tech to get creative. That artisticapproach adds new excitement to a typicalpedicure.

Have FunThe most important part of any pedicure

is to make sure you are enjoying yourself.Bring along your favorite book or zone outwith some relaxing tunes on your iPod.Also, dont be afraid to bring the kids along. Many mothers relish the mother/daughter

experience of getting matching pedicures. After all, the condition of your feet and toesare an important element to maintaining ahealthy, beautiful lifestyle. VIP

indow treatments are thelittle black dress of thehome-dcor world. Youstart with the basics thenadd hot-right-now colorsand fabrics to keep themstylish without requiring

a complete overhaul eachseason. You can dressthem up, dress them

down, bling them out or keep them simple.Whether you go for ready-made window treatments, in-

dulge in custom designs or get creative with a combination ofthe two, the key to lightening up for summer is starting withneutrals as a foundation, then adding cool, trendy colors andsubtracting heavy layers. In other words, theres no need tospend hundreds of dollars or more on completely new windowtreatments every time the temperatures dip or soar.

There are certain elements of your window treatments thatyou wont want to change with the seasons because of the costand pain-in-the-butt factor the main panels and valance, forexample. Build them around neutrals like grays, whites, tans,

etc. Even darker colors like chocolate can act as a neutral, depending on a homes overall theme, according to LatishaSodolak from Nickolinas in Beaumont.

Foundation fabrics should be substantial enough to takeyou through winter, but bear in mind that the really heavyones will be harder to dress down when warmer weather rollsaround.

Once youve got your base set, you can add splashes of thetrendiest colors with sashes, panels, etc. Whats hot for sum-mer 2011? That depends on whom you ask.

Light and neu, with a hint of blue, said Jeremy Schmittfrom McManus Co. in Beaumont. Neu, for neutral in shadesof grey, white and pale tan or brown. Then add a little skyblue, and you have a chic and soft color palette keeping you envogue for summer 11.

Sodolak says its all about orange this year. But dont worry, were not talking Tang.

The hot color for this summer is orange, without adoubt, she said. But not bright orange, more of a coral-ycolor. For so long, red was the hot color; this tones that downand lightens it up.

She recommended pairing it with greens, especially an

almost lime-y sort of green for a cool and trendylook.

Schmitt added that, color aside, the hot look rightnow is shabby AND chic, which is a little dierentfrom the popular tattered, rustic look known as shabbychic. To stay on the cutting edge of window fashionlan, go for a tailored outer layer alongside a looser, lighterinner layer, such as simple silk panels on either side of thewindow framing free-flowing linen sheers underneath.

Something else you might consider adding is a geometricband or border to just the inner edge of the silk drapery panels, running vertically, he said. This is a great way to customizeyour drapes to your own personal taste.

Sodolak said that lightening up for summer can be as easy as push-ing your heavier base panels as far to the side as possible and lettingthe lighter inner panels provide privacy while letting in the sunshine. Ifyou have shades, she said, pull them up as high as they can go so theyrehidden behind the valance.

Or you can opt for modern, more versatile shades that dont have tohide. Joyce Thompson, owner of The Blind Factory in Beaumont, saidthere are a variety of pretty fabric and even woven wood shades that aretransparent enough to let in light but still allow for privacy and heat ab-sorption. Cellular shades, she added, are number-rated for their energyeciency.

Some other ideas: Blackout linings for draperies, available in a variety of colors

and design options, help keep heat and harmful UV rays out and

are especially helpful when youre away on vacation or have tokeep the curtains closed for any length of time.

Blinds (whether cool wood or traditional vinyl) and louveredwooden shutters can keep the light out completely or can beopened to let in as much or as little brightness as your want. Many have slats so thin that they practically disappearwith opened.

The main thing to keep in mind when it comes to window treat-ments at any time of year is that you have choices, and they can beas elaborate or simple, costly or inexpensive as you want. Even storesthat specialize in custom treatments will help you add ready-madeoptions to your window repertoire.

Just dont be afraid to try something new, Sodolak said. You dont have to start from scratch every time. You can

swap items in and out, play with colors, or just put up awhole ready-made treatment if you really do want a to-tally dierent look. Changing your windows for the sea-son or just because you feel like you need a break fromwhat you have doesnt need to be a major project.

    Quick Tips forSummer Window Treatments

    from Jeremy Schmitt, McManus Co.

    1. Let it shine Think about linen sheers. Its like letting inthe light through an elegant veil. Very hot for summer!

    2. Stay cool Think about blackout lining under your summer

side panels. This will help keep things cool while youre on

vacation or have to keep the curtains closed for any length

    of time.

    3. Soft layers Think about light drapes and soft sheers when layering a

    window dressing.

    4. Keep it clean Think about clean and calm color palettes like soft blues

and greens, grays, whites, creams, etc.

    5. Stay green Think about renewable materials such as cotton, wool and silk.

Its a sensual site filled withpictures of a beautiful couplelocked in sultry gazes over theirtoilet. The Numi is situated ina glass-walled room overlook-ing a breathtaking vista of hillsringing a city, giving hundreds ofpeople an unobstructed view ofthis couples loo.

The room is decorated intasteful restraint with a floorlamp and an accent table, but ev-idently no place to sit other thanthe john. As my Facebook friendLinda noted when I posted oneof the pictures on my page,Poor family spent so much on

Its what the Numi does, however, that really commandedmy attention. It senses your

    Whether humble or palatial,

theres no place like a safe home

Home is a place where we should feelsafe and secure. After a hard dayswork, a long trip or just a hecticafternoon of running errands, wereglad to be home where we can relax. Our homes are our sanctuaries, andthe thought of intruders breaking inis not pleasant. Summer is a populartime for burglars to take advantage ofthe traditional vacation months. Your

home is your castle, so make it as fortress-like as possible.

    Home Security Technology

Wireless and hardwired home security systems, home automationevices, digital door locks, camera surveillance systems and tracking

With home security systems, Wayne Duerler, vice president aco-owner of Advanced Systems Alarm Services, prefers hardwireIm old school, he said. I would prefer a hardwired system. Treason: Its a positive circuit with a constant connection betweenthe control panel and the security devices in the house, so thereschance of interference from other wireless devices. If we can gewire to it, we want to, he said.

But what about common-sense burglary prevention such as keing your doors and windows locked and your house well-lit? Isntthat enough for most homes? Yeah, until you get robbed the firstime, said Mark Gunstream, president and co-owner of AdvanceSystems Alarm Services. You dont think you need a security sytem until you get hit.

Tucked away on ahuge corner lot inBeaumonts OldTown is a hiddengarden filled withsculptures somewhimsical andsome serious.Theres a girlreading a book

on a fish in one spot while pallbearerscarry a coffin in another. Happy children, oving families and playful animals are

depicted all around the grounds. Its theprivate outdoor gallery of David Cargill,a nationally known sculptor whose worksgrace many public places in the region.

My tendency is to do things that areighthearted, the sculptor, wearing histandard uniform of bib overalls, said. Most

of his commissioned sculptures had serioushemes, so when he created pieces for him-elf, they were often fanciful. His art doesnt

need to have a message, he explained. Inchool, students were taught that art should

have content, he said. We got past that. The gures in his backyard are mostly

bronze, but some are terra-cotta. Im inmy wood period now, he said, noting thatHurricane Rita wrecked his kiln for makingbronze sculptures and downed several of hisrees, providing him with lots of material.

A work still in progressIn 1957, Cargill started building his

prawling home that includes his indoorgallery and studio. When was it nished?I dont have a completion date, he repliedwith a hint of a grin as he headed insidewith his black standard poodle, Jack, trot-ing behind. A back door leads to a room

with oor-to-ceiling bookshelves on oneide and windows opening out onto theculpture garden on the other side. Next tohe windows, the dining table is set for tea.

Beyond is the gallery with its high archedceiling that holds Cargills smaller sculp-ures and his wifes paintings.

He and Patty Cargill met when they wereattending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.He was studying industrial design and shewas pursuing an art degree. Patty is thebetter of the two of us, he said, referring tohis wifes artistic talent.

On the opposite side of the house fromthe gallery is the sculptors cluttered studio.Shelves lining the high walls are packedwith cans of paint, tools and other art sup-plies. Rough-cut chunks of tree trunks restheavily on the oor with one being trans-formed into a table. Two unnished claybusts seemingly stare at visitors. With everyshelf, table and much of the oor coveredwith the detritus of his work, an ancient-looking ironing board serves as anothersurface to store more odds and ends.

My whole life is confused betweenbuilding the house and the studio work, hesaid. Intertwined, perhaps? No, he said, shaking his head. Confused.

The best ones just happenPractically his whole life has been de-

voted to his art and, at 82, hes still creatingand showing it. The Dishman Art Museumat Lamar University is currently hosting anexhibit of David and Patty Cargills work.

    The two artists sharecommon fascination

with exploring notnly the lines andhapes of the humanorm but also theective ties thatind mother andaughter, hus-and and wife and

oved ones of allges, said Jes-ica Dandona, the

    museums director.The Dishman Art

Museum is honored tohow the work of twortists who have done so

much to support the arts inBeaumont and who have had

uch an impact on their localommunity.

The university is home to one ofCargills better-known pieces, the larg-

r-than-life bust of Mirabeau B. Lamar. Why did the artist make the bronze

culpture so big? I thought it shoulde something that would be seen,

he explained simply. The humongoushead rests on a marble base inscribedwith some quotes by the universitysnamesake. The words were etched byPatty Cargill.

What inspired him to create hisighthearted pieces? The best onesust happened, he mused. I have

no idea. He gave the example of theculpture of a girl reading a book onfish. I dont know what possessed

me, he said.Even though Cargill might not

know what inspires him, others credithim and his wife as their inspiration,

ncluding internationally known pho-ographer Keith Carter. I think the

Cargills are the true aristocrats of ourown if the requirements are charac-er, originality, intelligence and sheereauty of spirit, Carter, a longtime

Beaumont resident, said. Ive knownhem for over half a century now, andve been grateful for every day in theirompany. Theyre a major reason I

    wanted to be an artist.

    No reason to stop

-Looking back on his career, Cargillnotes one high point. Some of hispieces were in a show in Dallas in the

1980s, and Dallas-based real estatedeveloper Trammell Crow bought hissculpture titled Horse and Rider. When Crow came to Beaumont tospeak at a civic event, Cargill attendedand was introduced to Crow before thereal estate magnate spoke to the audi-ence. At the podium, Crow pointed atCargill and said, You know the bestthing in Beaumont is this young fellowright here. After that, Crow commis-sioned Cargill to create pieces for hispersonal collection.

After all these years, what motivatesCargill to keep sculpting? Is it habit,

or is it a necessary part of his life, likebreathing? Maybe, he contemplated. But the answer is really much simpler.I just like making stu.

His family claims hell die on hischisel. I dont plan to ever stop, hesaid. I enjoy this work. His wife in-terjected, Theres no reason to stop.He nodded, agreeing, as he poured hermore tea. Im happy to just be doingwhat Im doing. VIP

    keeps your skin looking young.

o with that singular benefit inmind, Im here to tell you howo fight the other effects of ourwampy climate: the melt yourace off, my makeup looked finewo hours ago, dang this dang

humidity effects, to be exact. Now, Im a Beaumont girl

myself, and I know how weouthern ladies are about our

elieve people should noticeou and not your makeup. Andhats easier said than done

when your eyeliner is runningdown your cheeks and yourlipgloss has migrated to yourchin. So whats a girl to do when

its 95 degrees Fahrenheit with106% humidity? Just remem-ber the little saying less ismore. Put away that bottle ofcakey foundation and hide yourchunky black eyeliner untilnext season.

Summer is the time to letbeautiful skin show. Instead ofliquid foundation, try a powder. For the lightest coverage use aloose powder like the one fromCoty. Yes, thats your grand-mothers makeup but it does thejob of absorbing oil and evening
