SAVANNAH POST JULY SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT ISSUE 10 July 2012 Bill Jones Bill has worked 37 years in the Electric Transmission and Distribution Engineering field. Thirty one of those years were with Savannah Electric and Power, a former operating subsidiary of The Southern Company. During that time he worked in various engineering roles, including 17 years as the manager of distribution engineering. He retired in 2006 as the manager of transmission and distribution reliability. The position had responsibility for asset man- agement programs, reliability and power quality investigations and improvements, long range system planning and capital budgeting. In 2006, Bill began working as a project manager/professional engineer for Utility Support Systems, Inc., an engineering services small business supporting private and public owners/operators of Electric T&D and Telecommunications systems. Projects done since that time include electric distribution design, distribution system analysis, coordination studies and arc flash analysis, transmission route assessment, and renewable generation interconnections. Bill is a graduate of Georgia Tech (Bachelor Electrical Engineering) and Ogeechee Technical College – Statesboro, Georgia (Geographic Information Systems.) He is a registered PE in Georgia and five other southern states, and is a member of SAME and IEEE. Smart Grid is a well-entrenched buzz word these days, but it has many definitions, contains many parts and pieces, and generates many opinions. This presentation will be a short review of some of the possibilities, probabilities and questions on various parts and pieces (and some opinions) concerning the Smart Grid – including metering, renewable generation and the grid, reliability/security, and transmission and distribution advancements and concerns. Showcase which was a whopping success. We had 46 small

businesses that participated in the Showcase. There were

many other small business firms attending too.
