Onwards and Upwards

Hello Members,Recently I was privileged to witness the joy of a new student who had just achieved his first takeoff and landing. The nervous energy and uncertainty prior to the flight

changed to a broad grin and exuberance afterwards. As seasoned aviators we sometimes forget that those first flights are a precious memory for our new students and for members

of the public who come to the club to experience flight. Let's not keep this secret - I challenge every club member to bring one new friend or family member to the club for a trial flight before the end of the year. They will not regret it, and you will be their hero (for a little while, at least)! There are many ways we can all promote flying, and the club. Have you seen the new look website? It's fantastic. Please share the URL www.royalaeroclubwa.com.au with your friends. Ben Jackson is doing a great job promoting club activities and keeping our members up-to-date with clever and interesting Facebook posts. Have you "friended" Racwa yet? Search for RoyalAeroClubWA. This is a great way to get real-time information about what's going on. We communicate in many ways nowadays - if you haven't advised the club of your latest email address, please do, so we can send you Communications emails. We had a very informative presentation from CASA's Craig Peterson on electronic flight bags at the recent Aviation Workshop Evening. If you are not attending these events, you're missing out! Craig also demonstrated a number of excellent offerings on the CASA website at www.casa.gov.au. One very interesting option is OUT-N-BACK, a 6 part video of flying around various parts of Australia in a C172. Remember the very popular and useful VFG? CASA has recreated this under Education/Pilot Guides, where you can also find useful videos about navigating the airspace around major Australian airports, including ours. If you're interested in CASA's online training, you can register at AviationWorx. For an email feed of all CASA's news you can also register on the mailing list (a link at the bottom of every CASA website). Don't forget to register for the upcoming CASA Safety Seminar covering the new regulations, which will be held at Racwa on Thursday 18th July (in lieu of our July Aviation Workshop). Go to Education/Seminars/AvSafety Seminars. We have an exciting programme of Aviation Workshops planned for the coming months and I hope you can join us.We are inching closer to finalising the subdivision at Murrayfield, and looking forward to completing the sale of part of the property. We will have to wait for the dust to settle before we know exactly how the bank intends to restructure the remaining debt, but the hope is that we will have access to some much needed funds. Thanks to James Benjamin for the hard work he has done recently, assisting the Committee with the strategic planning process. Many of you had a chance to speak with James. One of the things we learned from James' discussions with members is that a sense of pessimism persists with some members. Perhaps this is my fault for not crowing loudly about our successes. However, I wouldn't want to jinx our turnaround, and I have been cautious not to raise hopes prematurely. I can assure you that the club is performing much better than previously, and doing so in a challenging economic environment. This is in large part due to the hard work and talent of our staff, who work under difficult austerity constraints. Thanks to this sacrifice and restraint, we expect the club to return a profit this financial year. Another persistent belief is that the College inhibits our success, but this is far from the truth. Looked at as a ground training business (as we must from an accounting perspective), it is marginal - however, the College contributes thousands of hours to the club's flying income. This is often overlooked when considering the overall benefit to the consolidated organisation. When the ground school costs are offset by the income from the flying that is a mandatory component of most College courses, WAAC is very beneficial to Racwa. WAAC continues to offer the best, accredited, 150 hour CPL training at Jandakot. On a sad note, I have to announce that Craig Dawson has resigned from the Committee for personal reasons. I would like to extend my appreciation to Craig for his hard work and his support to me over the last year, and I wish him all the best in his future endeavours. We have an exciting and busy club flying and social calendar over the coming months. The Wings Dinner, the highlight of our social calendar is approaching fast. I have my ticket, do you? I look forward to seeing you there.

Recently the Club

had one of its excellent Aviation Workshops. The theme of the evening was air crash investigation and the star of the show was Hilton Wilson, insurance investigator.Hilton presented us with many instances of pilot induced premature air frame failure, complete with pictures and circumstances. He averaged one general aviation investigation per week for his career; he is only one of twelve investigators in Australia. He pointed out even though the aircraft was destroyed the POB survived, sometimes not in good nick but alive. In many instances the countryside they came down in was not the “land of milk and honey” but the incredibly harsh outback of Australia.Once on the ground survival is paramount until the SAR personnel home in on your ELT. In certain situations, Hilton reported that pilots were unable to retrieve their survival kits from the rear of the aircraft wreckage. “You should have easy access to your survival kit” he recommended. After consulting a military supply firm and briefing them on the requirements to have a comprehensive survival kit that didn’t weigh too much, a compact two kilogram pack has been designed. It can keep two people alive and relatively comfortable for a minimum of twenty four hours. It also contains signalling devices to attract any nearby aircraft and helicopters. The Kit contains: 2 sachets meal (1200kj), 5 water sachets, Chocolate bar, Signal mirror, strobe beacon, whistle, button compass 2 emergency blankets, 3 light sticks, candle, tourniquet, 2 crepe bandages, safety pins, needle and thread, basic first aid sheet, knife, matches, flint striker, wire wood saw, snare type wire, fishing kit, water purifying tablets and a pencil. It is all contained in a light weight canvas box.The kit is small enough to fit under the seat of high seat aircraft and small enough to fit below the thighs on a low seat aircraft. If you are travelling in our wonderful country be it by aircraft or

heaven forbid, a “car” it is $259.00 well spent for peace of mind should we be delayed by mechanical failure or stress of weather. Orders may be placed at Reception.

The Australian Air Force Cadets will be on show at the Royal Aero Club, Jandakot, from 10am - 2pm on 28

July. The RAAF will be flying aircraft to Jandakot from their base at Pearce to support the day and the Royal Aero Club and HeliWest will also have aeroplanes and helicopters on display. Events also include precision marching and Air Force Cadets Drum Corps

performances. Young people will be able to try out Air Force Cadets without obligation, including putting on camouflage equipment, playing the drums with the Drum Corps, and even being able to win a flight in an aircraft with themselves as pilot (with a qualified flying instructor). Formerly the Air Training Corps, the Australian Air Force Cadets is still sponsored by the Air Force, and provides persons of both sexes, aged 13-18 years, the most challenging and exciting activities available in Australia today. If you want to learn to fly or just love being around aircraft, you are mad not to join the Air Force Cadets which teaches you to fly in both powered aircraft and gliders.Cadets in their first year will fly a plane themselves, and then be able to go solo in gliders (from age 15) and powered aircraft from age 16 during special 10-day training courses held during school holidays. Cadets also learn survival skills in the bush, considerable leadership skills, intensive firearms safety training, undertake adventurous activities such as abseiling, go hiking, learn to play in the Drum Corps, and go on international exchanges with other Air Forces.Cadets can earn credit points toward their WA Certificate of Education and a TAFE Certificate III in Business before they've even got a full-time job. Air Force Cadet Squadrons are located in Joondalup, Madeley, Guildford, Claremont, Fremantle, Cannington, Mandurah, Bullsbrook, Bunbury, Albany, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie.Check out the Australian Air Force Cadets at www.aafc.org.au or come to the Jandakot Recruitment Day at the Royal Aero Club, Eagle Drive, Jandakot on 28 July.

A Warm Welcome to our New Members, and Congratulations Everyone

This Month's Achievers

I recently spent 3 very cold weeks in the UK and my host was keen to take me for a drive in his Alfa Romeo Spyder. (It was far too cold to think about going ‘topless’).

We went to Montrose, which is roughly halfway between Dundee and Aberdeen, because a Museum has recently been opened there on a former RAF flying school. The site had been turned into an industrial area but some of the original buildings remained and a group of enthusiasts got together to create the museum in part as a tribute to the personnel who died while undertaking flying training from there.Very much a work-in-progress, Montrose, opened in 1913, and which once hosted No 8 Flying Training School and No 2 Flying Instructor School, is of interest mainly in the collection of artefacts in the various timber buildings which are part of the original base. These buildings include the original air station HQ and brought back many memories to host Sandy & myself who both were very familiar with these structures during National Service in the RAF.Flying wise there is nothing to see as the original runways etc have long disappeared – a rather sad Meteor sits outside while a Vampire trainer and a replica Sopwith share a genuine nissen hut. Two things piqued my interest – a couple of bomb sights and a pair of Link Trainers.Sandy & I had experience of Link Trainers when 1232 sqn ATC of

which we were both members, acquired one when the RAF disposed of them in the ‘fifties. One of that pair at Montrose is complete with its tracking table and is fully operational!

The Link Trainer was the original flight simulator. Its main value was to give experience of blind flying – forget foggles and hoods, once the canopy was closed you were really in the dark and just had to use what little instrumentation was provided. No fancy TV screens and the like ‘cos black and white TV (on a 12 inch screen) had only recently been invented! The instructor outside the device had the ability to spring nasty surprises like changes in wind direction etc. on the hapless student.I mentioned this to ex-Pres Jim Jenkins and he told me that at one time the club possessed a Link Trainer. When bad weather prevented Club Comps, contestants were submitted to this form of ‘torture’!The bomb sights are not well documented but both are rather terrifying devices which must have been very daunting to operate. I think one of them was an American Norden. One of the major problems of aerial warfare has been finding a means of delivering bombs accurately on to the chosen target and the Norden bomb sight was believed to be the ultimate solution. It required the bomb aimer to enter such things as course, height, wind estimates at different levels and then to look through an eyepiece at the target and call out to the pilot – “…left, left, steady, steady….etc…” and then to press the button when the target appeared in the crosshairs, whereupon the lightened aircraft would leap from the sudden release of its load.Unfortunately all too often the actual target was obscured by cloud or just invisible on the ‘blackout’ conditions from ten thousand feet or more!! Plus of course very accurate navigation was required just to get to the vicinity of the target.

Craig Hensley, Club Captain

G’day MembersHow good have the flying conditions been?

The Jandakot night comp was fantastic, HMAS Murrayfield was a beautiful day for flying and there have been plenty of cool, clear days to take full advantage

of your flying privileges. It won’t last all winter so get to the Club and make the most of it. The Flying Committee has organized a Prawn night at the Club on Saturday, August 17th. Tickets are limited to 80 and turning up on the night will not be an option. Get your tickets early and don’t miss out. At $30 it’s great value and will be a great night out.Early this month is the final Night Comp at Jandakot and on the 7th there is a crew heading to Bunbury for the Big Breakfast and a comp down there with Northam Aero Club, Bunbury Aero Club and Bussellton Aero Club all invited to join in. The point is to help get other clubs into competition flying, joining in the WALACs in November. Enjoy a day out with other aviators and be fed a fantastic breakfast at a great price.

From the Club CaptainNortham Aero Club have kindly invited members to their Wings Dinner held at their Clubhouse on 13th July and the competition the following morning. Anyone wanting to go please let me know and I’ll pass it on to Errol. A group of us went last year and it was a great night. The last few comps have been really well attended especially the night comps at Jandakot and I just want to thank everyone for coming along and joining in and a big thanks to the Flying Committee and the regulars who help out. I enjoy participating in the comps and without the support of everyone involved I wouldn’t be able to. Finally I’d like to remind members to book your table for our annual Wings Dinner. This is the premier night on the Aero Club calendar and celebrates the hard work of Students, Staff and Members of our great Club. By being a part of this night you show your support for the Club and the people who help make flying such a rewarding activity. Happy Landings

Competitions

Once again it’s a busy start to the month with the final Night Comp at Jandakot on the 4th of July. Make sure you get there early as time restraints could see a

restriction on numbers. There will not be a comp at Murrayfield this month due to the trip to Bunbury on the 7th which will include a PFL & Low Level Spot Landing competition. The point of this trip is not only to enjoy the breakfast but to encourage members of other clubs to participate in the WALACs in November. Then on Sunday 28th at Jandakot we have the Rudder Circuit. Next month we have a Missed Approach comp at Murrayfield and a Flapless Circuit at Jandakot.

Night CompetitionsWith the final Night comp at Jandakot on the 4th you’ll have to pencil in the 21st of September to get your next night flying fix. Details will follow but rest assured it will be nice full moon and clear weather.

Fly-InsThe northern pilgrimage has been worked out and this year we will be heading to Dongara on the 19th & 20th of October. Southerly’s Tavern will be the dinner venue and accommodation options are being sorted out. Further details to follow

Commemorative FlightsThe Battle of Britain Dawn Patrol will be held on September 14th. Formation and Non Formation flights will meet at 0500 for roll call and briefing with wheels up at 0600 for a beautiful sunrise flight over the city. Anyone who hasn’t been on this flight before should make sure they can get there this year. It’s one of the best flights you can make. Breakfast will be cooked and ready when you return and will be followed by a guest speaker and the Wings and Wheels vintage car and aircraft display. Don’t miss out.

In the Big Wide W

orldIndustry Presentation

“Successful pilots need to have that extra edge” declared Fugro chief pilot Mark Harradance. Addressing students at the May industry presentation, Mark spoke

about the factors that employers will look for when interviewing pilots. Applicants need to show they have a good understanding of the organisation – the fleet, where they operate and the business model. “Well prepared pilots who can demonstrate a passion for flying generally have that all important extra edge” he said.A builder by trade, Mark qualified as a commercial pilot and then as an instructor, funding his training by having three jobs at the same time. When he moved to Fugro, he was a Grade 1 instructor. Mark’s career at Fugro has seen him fly all over the world, either on survey operations or ferrying an aircraft to another destination. “Name a country and I've probably been there” he stated. “As a pilot, one sees a foreign country and its local population from a different perspective that tourists don’t appreciate – and I have really enjoyed the majority of these secondments”.Mark strongly recommended that students apply themselves as much as possible. Just passing the exams will not give a student that extra edge. “Always do your best - that is what an interview panel will look for” he advised. An important factor for young commercial pilots to consider is what they want to achieve in life. Chasing money and prestigious flying jobs will not necessarily make someone happy if they would rather be flying elsewhere. He advised pilots to research the alternatives and think about the satisfaction one would get before making a decision.

I hope that, like me, you have had the chance to get out and fly in some of the beautiful winter weather we have been having. Some of the recent weekends have been near

perfect flying conditions and I have been lucky enough to have some spare time to get airborne. That also gave me the chance to finally use my Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) for the first time (an iPad). I have been talking about EFBs quite a bit lately at various industry meetings and seminars, but had yet to actually turn mine on and use it in the air. When I finally got around to doing it, the EFB met my expectations and more. They are a fantastic tool when used right, but like any piece of equipment that we use airborne, it has some traps. The legislation surrounding EFBs has come a long way of late. Indeed, Australia is currently one of the leading nations in legislating to ensure the safe use of this technology in aviation. Some people have asked why we even need to legislate such things, and if we stop and think about some of the potential problems it starts to become clear. How do we ensure the data is up to date and reliable? How do we manage the hardware so that it doesn’t restrict our controls nor move around in the cockpit during takeoff, landing, turbulence etc? What happens if the battery runs out whilst we’re airborne? Identifying, assessing and treating risks like these is an integral part of safe

aviation practices, and if we make sure we are familiar with the rules we can make the most use of these incredible tools both safely and efficiently.CASA has put out CAAP 233-1 (0) which specifically addresses the types of EFB and their use. It is essential reading for anyone who wishes to use an EFB. There is also some very important supporting material on the EFB information page on the CASA website. The easiest way to find it is to go to the CASA ‘Home’ page then select ‘Regulations and Policy’ from the top menu, followed by ‘Changing the Rules’. Once on this page you can scroll down the menu on the left to find ‘Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)’. Here you will find all the information you need on EFBs, including the CAAP. As always, if you find that you have questions after reading this material, please do not hesitate to contact me in the Perth CASA office. Safe Flying

ldAviation Workshop

CASA representative Craig Peterson was the main speaker at the Information Evening on Tuesday, 18th June. His aim was to draw attention to the various safety publications

put out by CASA, many of which are available to download via the Internet. He had most of them, in print form, for members to collect. He drew attention to the the availability of the CASA website and explained how best to navigate it. Two items which he wished to emphasise were “outnback”, a six-part Video Series, and “On Track” an interactive guide to operating in and around controlled airspace.Additionally Craig went into a deal of detail about changes to Aircrew Licences under Part 61 proposals which will become apparent over the next couple of years. These changes are being made to better align with ICAO practice. One example he quoted is the fact that Glider Pilots have no recognition outside Australia because their Licensing system is not internationally approved. All aircrew licences will, over the course of the next two years or so, list all endorsements gained, probably as medical certification is updated. Additionally, the current “GFPT” is to be replaced with a ‘Recreational Pilot's Licence”.

Craig also advised that an Aviation Safety Seminar for pilots in the Jandakot area will be held on Thursday 18th July. Members should note that this will replace the Aviation Workshop normally scheduled for Tuesday 16th July. Our Murrayfield resident Instructor Michael Chlopek followed with a presentation covering his recent delivery of a Cessna model 172N to Queensland on behalf of its new owners. He chose to fly across the centre of the Continent – Kalgoorlie, Warburton, Alice Springs, Mt Isa and Normanton. His account of the amount of detail undertaken to successfully complete the trip was most entertaining. As much as for the, minor, neglected factors as for the vital included items to ensure survival should disaster occur.

old,” said 24-year old Pilot Officer Kim Shearman, now well on the way to becoming an elite RAAF fighter pilot.Kim is currently based with No 76 Squadron at RAAF Williamtown (Newcastle)

where he is doing the introductory fighter course on Hawk 127 jets, the lead-in trainer for the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet front-line fighter aircraft.“I’ve flown about 100 hours so far in the Hawk, but it will be another year or so before I finish training and can graduate to the Hornet,” said Kim.This followed his initial RAAF pilot course of about 140 hours on the familiar red and white turbo-prop Pilatus PC-9/A which gained Kim his Air Force pilot wings at RAAF Base Pearce.Kim owes much of his career aspirations success to the superb grounding he got in the Australian Air Force Cadets in Western Australia.“I joined the AAFC (formerly Air Training Corps) at age 13 and am still an auxiliary member; training as a Cadet for seven years, and then remaining on as an instructor until I joined Air Force just under three years ago.”During his AAFC career, Kim participated in two separate overseas Cadet exchanges to The Netherlands and France, visited Gallipoli as awardee of the Ellie Tibble Memorial Scholarship, and chaired the national Cadet Reference Group which represents the interests of Cadets to the adult leadership team and Air Force.“No other organisation in Australia is even close to delivering the developmental opportunities available to teenage Air Force Cadets,” said Kim. Kim first flew an aircraft solo when he completed the AAFC’s twice-yearly Elementary Flying Training Course for gliding at Cunderin at the legal minimum age of 15 years. He then came back the following year to qualify solo in powered flying in a Cessna 152 aircraft. The powered solo qualification was Kim’s lead in to RACWA where, in just two years, he earned his private pilot licence and then commercial pilot licence. He continued to give back to the Cadets by piloting the aircraft used to launch gliders at Cunderdin.“I’ve willingly signed on with the Air Force for more than 11 years and am experiencing a level of flying enjoyment and satisfaction that you just can’t pay for; while at the same time looking forward to serving and protecting Australia,” said Kim.“My advice? Aim high and consider yourself worthy of achieving great things.”

Eric Galliers loves flying so much he has made it both

work and hobby.A QantasLink pilot for the past three years, he flies Dash 8 aircraft fulltime throughout regional Queensland, while creating model aircraft in his spare time at home in Brisbane."I served as first officer on QantasLink Bombardier Q400s for two years before being appointed captain last October," said Eric, who is qualified on the Dash 8 -200 (36 seat), -300 (50 seat) and also the Bombardier Q400 (74 seat)"When not flying, aircraft modelling is equally rewarding for me & I've been fortunate to win many awards for competitions."An Australian Air Force Cadet in Kalgoorlie throughout his teenage years, where he rose to the highest rank of Cadet Under Officer, Eric says the leadership, discipline, and dress and bearing skills he acquired have been major influences in shaping his career."I've wanted to fly since I was knee-high to a nose-wheel, and my Air Force Cadets leadership and discipline training and experience gave me the edge and have had a profound effect in furthering my career."Now, as Captain on the Dash 8, I'm in charge of a small company of people who rely on me to role-model and demonstrate the highest professional standards. "For example, at QantasLink, we're expected to dress and behave in a manner similar to the military, so anyone with ambition who thinks they can leave ironing shirts behind when they leave Cadets has another think coming," laughed Eric.He studied for his commercial pilot licence with Racwa in the late 1990s, training on Mooneys and the Cessna 152 and 172.This was followed by several years working in the mining industry, and then flying charter aircraft such as Beechcraft Barons and Cessna Grand Caravans, based at Port Hedland.Eric's most memorable experiences include the thrill of first flying solo at age 16, and being pilot on a charter flight for former Prime Minister Bob Hawke. And his aircraft modelling hobby?"I love entering my scale model aircraft in competitions, where I've been fortunate to win a large number of trophies, and

recently achieved 'best of show' with an F-4 Phantom jet"

Our O

wn Backyard

Hello EveryoneI don’t have a lot to say as it has been pretty busy this month, especially for Byron who has been putting in

the hard yards on Sundays here. Every Sunday there is barely a minute for Byron to spare. Thanks and keep up the good work. I know your students appreciate your dedication.Who said winter was a quiet season? This month we have sold 4 starter packs with students very keen to fly as often as possible. Let’s hope the rain stays away.It has finally happened. I passed the test with JD and am now a Grade 2 flight instructor. That is a great step for Murrayfield as now training can be conducted from start to finish without having to involve other instructors from Jandakot (other than flight tests). So with our C172, C152s and shortly the Mooney - feel free to book in down here and benefit from the discounts.VH-AUC is getting a real work out with 3 students currently working towards their PPL flight tests, still not as much member hire though. Please call though, make the bookings, and share the flights.

Help keep our little fleet down in our corner.Well done to Lori Hensley (First Solo), Sammy Sharifeh (Area Solo) and Paul Knight (Area Solo) for their achievements this month.Take care and see you soon at the bar. .

I recently got back into flying after completing my GFPT some 13 years ago, attending your Murrayfield operations as I am a resident of

Mandurah.Over the last couple of months I have been under instruction from Kieran Elliot and Michael Chlopek, slowly getting back to a GFPT standard. I am shortly about to commence my PPL nav’s with Michael. Michael has been extremely helpful in arranging this training, juggled around my FIFO roster!!!In a day and age where people’s expectations of service are high and gratitude seldom, your staff at Murrayfield stand out as providers. I would like to personally take this opportunity to commend Kieran and Michael on the job they do at Murrayfield. They are extremely helpful and accommodating, and appear to genuinely have the student's best interests at heart. The way in which they perform their duties is often ‘expected’, but can easily go unrecognised. Can you please pass these thanks to their CFI, as I believe they both deserve the recognition.Cheers,

Steve Callaghan

In the PipelineCASA Confirms External Camera Ruling

CASA has confirmed that pilots will need to comply with the regulations of CASR 21.M to install "GoPro" type cameras on the external surface of an aircraft.

Under CASR 21.M (the old CAR35), a CASA authorised person has to approve the installation against existing airworthiness standards before the aeroplane can be flown."Attaching anything to the external surfaces of an aircraft, whether it is the wing or not, is considered a modification," CASA's spokesperson said."Depending on what is being attached, it may have an effect on the aerodynamics, structure and depending on its location it can affect the airspeed/altimeter readings, etc. Therefore, the alteration to the aircraft needs to be justified against the applicable airworthiness standard."Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR) 1988 regulation 35 was repealed approximately two years ago and replaced by CASA Subpart 21.M. However, CASR Subpart 21.M has the same requirements as CAR 35 did.

"CASR Subpart 21.M does not disallow the installation of a modification or alteration to an aircraft, it is a regulation that allows design approval of the modification. CAR 42U requires any modification or repair to an aircraft to be installed in accordance with approved data. Therefore attaching a temporary modification must be done to 21.M approved data by an appropriately licenced person."With the proliferation of GoPro-style cameras for videos and still shots, the issue has been bought into sharp focus, especially when those shots are published or put on websites.Comment Australian Flying has published many shots in the past from cameras mounted externally. As this practice has been going on for over 50 years they always presumed there was no issue for the pilot. In future, they will still accept these shots, but will warn the photographer about the CASA requirement.

4 Fantastic - couldn't get the smile off my face all day. Corrie was a great tutor - he was even kind enough to say that I handled most of the landing. Only teensie problem was that I found it extremely difficult to hear what he was saying. That could be that I didn't know how to "tune in" properly, but in any event it didn't lessen the enjoyment of the day.
