Enhancing Our Local EmergencyServices

RC Hospital & Clinics is proud to announce the addition of Avera eEmergencyservices in Renville County. RC Hospital provides emergency services to over 1,000patients in the county each year. Open 24/7, the ER is equipped to handle any patient that comes through the door. However, in the most critical cases, the oldadage, “two heads are better than one,” can often be true. The new eEmergencyservice will provide that extra support to RCH&C clinicians when needed.

At the push of a button, local physicians and emergency room staff have immediate, virtual access to a team of physicians and nurses who specialize inemergency medicine.

Through HD video conferencing, our clinicianswill be able to receive support for complex emergency cases, such as heart attack, stroke, respiratory distress or traumatic injury. The eEmergency team can virtually double the number of clinicians in the room for those all hands on deckscenarios.

“With really critical cases, we need to do a lot ofthings at the same time, while also stepping back to assess the big picture of what’sgoing on with the patient,” said Al Johnson, PA-C. “eEmergency can provide support by making transfer arrangements or completing paperwork so we can stayat the patient’s side. Avera’s experienced emergency Board Certified Physicians canalso help us think through the case and talk through what the next steps could be.”

The eEmergency service is used for things like multi-victim car accidents, quickbaby deliveries, snake bites, and hypothermia – cases that most emergency roomssee only once every few years. In these kinds of cases, the eEmergency team canhelp arrange for a transfer, order a helicopter, and contact the receiving hospital if needed. This can save precious time in cases where every minute counts.

“eEmergency gives us the ability to extend and enhance the level of health carein our community,” said Nathan Blad, CEO, RC Hospital & Clinics. “It gives us access to the same type of specialists available in Olivia, enabling us to deliver better care, right here in our county, and keep patients here whenever possible.”

eEmergency is a win-win for everyone involved. eEmergency supports patientcare in several ways:l Immediate availability of physician-led emergency care, 24 hours a dayl Streamlined access to specialistsl Activation of emergency transport teams as early as possible l Support when the local facility experiences multiple emergency cases at oncel Fewer unnecessary transfers

At a recent group tour of the new Medical Center, the question was asked, “Who had the ideato build the new hospital?” After tracing the projectback to its inception, it was discovered that this person was Renville County Commissioner, John Stahl.

“When I was a young child, both my sister and Ihad separate serious accidents and were driven byour parents to Dr. James Cosgriff, Sr’s office. Fromthere we were taken in the family car to Willmar, ”stated Stahl. “So the need for responsive medicaltreatment has always been a priority to me. In anyemergency situation, the first 60 minutes is considered the ‘Golden Hour’ for recovery success.”

“Having been a patient at our Outreach Clinic recently, I saw first hand how inefficient the work flow is in our present building. RCH&C has an excellent staff that has performed in less than ideal conditions.”

“The feasibility study determined the cost of new construction was just 15% morethan remodeling our present land-locked dated facility,” said Stahl. “So, thanks toforward thinking RC Hospital Board Members, staff, Renville County Commissioners, providers, and residents, we will now have a state-of-the-art facility. The new RC Hospital Medical Center will be an asset to people of Renville County for generations to come.”

By investing in RC Hospital & Clinics, Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC) is committedto directly impacting the quality of care for our communitymembers, shareholders, and employees. SMBSC had theprivilege to see the progress made on the new RC Hospital& Clinics during a tour this spring.

With a mix of private support from businesses includingSMBSC, RC Hospital & Clinics will enjoy several new patient-friendly improvements, which will keep our friends, family members, and employees closer to home. SMBSCCEO, Kelvin Thompsen, presented RC Hospital CapitalCampaign Chair, Dr. Kathryn K. Kelly, with a financial contribution for two separate projects.

The first project, a garden at the southeast end of thenew state-of-the-art facility, will benefit the entire circle oflife. Patients from the Hospice room as well as patients inthe Obstetrics Suites will be able to enjoy beautiful flowersand plants, creating a peaceful ambiance welcoming newlife while honoring the lives of those who are passing.

The second project is for new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment. This MRI equipment will allowphysicians to diagnose and monitor treatments for a varietyof medical conditions. This includes abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord; tumors, cysts, and other deviations in variousparts of the body including joints, liver, andother organs. This additional service will createa broad spectrum of services to enhance ourcommunities’ health.

According to Thompsen, “SMBSC is proudto be a partner in providing quality healthcare inour backyard. The efficiencies and work flowcreated in this new facility will afford a patientexperience that eases patient tension while reducing wait times, which will benefit everyonein our surrounding area.”

When a Capital Campaign board memberapproached Olivia resident Mary Ellen Rauenhorst, she knew exactly where shewanted her donation to the new facility to be used. Mary Ellen felt a strong desire to provide a quiet place where patients, and family members could go, and spend timein prayer, and reflection. “Everyone needs aquiet place at sometime, even more in a medical facility. Just a small place to maybepray, rest, and get your thoughts together.Quiet time is hard to find. I hope it serves its purpose,” she stated. The new M.E. Rauenhorst Family Chapel will provide such a place.

Local artist Sheila Jacobs was commissioned to create a serene stainedglass window for the chapel. The chapel offers comfortable seating for families and patients in a quiet setting that combines both healingand art for those in need.
