From the BridgeCommodore KEN HUMPHREY

Another SRBCNC 4th of July at Mandeville (Mandelville?) is in the books but this one was different. The club took the raft-up to the South side of the channel and took over “Al’s Place”. The weather was nice, the turnout was good and Mandeville was filled with boats. I was able to indoctrinate Frank Ortega and Scott Landcastle to “The Gauntlet”. It is amazing how (3) 50-somethings can become 15 for a couple of hours and turn into a juggernaut with super soakers! The rest of the boats never stood a chance! The only problem is how the shoulders feel for a couple of days afterwards…

One other thing that happened is someone was “broken” while riding as a passenger in our dinghy. While traversing some mild boat wakes, the Great Escape first mate was bounced a bit and sustained a back injury. After being x-rayed on Monday, it was found to be a broken vertebrae! Linda has been fitted with a Star Wars Storm Trooper outfit to reduce her mobility which will allow her bones to mend. This hit home and leads me to remind everyone to be careful of driving dinghies over wakes when riders are in the front seat. We take for it granted since these larger tenders handle these waves, but the passengers can’t always handle them. Get well soon Linda!

The Commodore’s Mystery Cruise is fast approaching so I thought I would put out the first clue to the location, so here it is. Clue #1: We will be tied to docks but we have never

been there with our boat. I am working on a menu for the dinner on Saturday October 10th but the first flyer won’t include the menu. I will make a point to include this first clue in the flyer. Make sure to sign-up as I expect this cruise will be a good time!

My helpful link for this month is for a product that will reduce the time and hassle of completely drying-off your boat after a wash. The water spots from the well water at most of our marinas is brutal. I can state that I spend at least as much time drying as I do washing my boat. If this product works as advertised, It will reduce my overall wash time substantially (and the first mate’s too!). I’ll keep you posted.

Until the lines are untied again,

Ken

From the WheelVice Commodore SUE HALLING

I thought I would write about some of the adventures in boating with my Father John Corvi who passed away this month. Being born in Italy in 1920, he came over to the US thru’ Ellis Island in 1921; and was raised in Marin County in the ‘20s and ‘30s. He lived on a ranch and they raised and grew most of their food, but fish was always an important staple in their diet, so they were all fishermen. Dad hung out at China Camp where he could rent a row boat and fish all day on San Pablo Bay for a buck or two. Later in life (the ‘40s and ‘50s) he bought a small outboard, which he threw on the row boat he was renting. There was even a small trailer boat he owned for a while.

Once we purchased Lady “I”, Dad was able to fish again. The picture is from the ’91 SRBCNC Salmon Tournament. The fish got him second place. On another fishing adventure

with his niece on Lady “I”, he was placing a stern anchor and asked his niece to pay out the line. He didn’t bother to explain to the novice, that when she got to the end of the line, she needed to secure it. She simply paid out line till it was gone! Then there was the trip to buoy 5 in San Pablo Bay. Dad once caught some fish there, so he felt that’s where the best fishing is! Evidently the closer you get to that buoy the better the fishing is. He wrapped the anchor line around the buoy chain to a point where it was hopelessly tangled. Then there was the trip where we returned to the marina and the train trestle was closed and broken and we couldn’t get in. This

was before the days of cell phones. Dad was so concerned that my Mom would worry, he had John contact the marine operator and called his house. The irony of this was that we were only three miles away!

Lady “I” was named after my Mother Irene. John refers to them as the Bank of Corvi. Whenever I need a loan, they were always there to help. John & I boated with Lady “I” for 21 years. She remains in the club, her new owners Robert & Maria Gianelli take great care of her. I have fond memories of our time on Lady “I”. I know it made Dad happy to learn her new owner’s name ended in a vowel (you know what that means!)

I know Dad’s enjoying the fishing and boating in heaven.

Vice Commodore standing by on 71…

Some of you have asked “Why Coventina was on “TIME OUT” July 3rd and !POOF! gone the morning of the 4th. (We had to leave at the boat crack of dawn Saturday for another engagement and didn’t want to disturb anyone.)

I once again sent Mr. Hilton a thank you card for the wonderful firework extravaganza from SRBCNC but, this year I emailed it and asked if I could have the history of how this amazing event started. I would like to thank Mr. Hilton’s office for the following:

Mr. Barron Hilton is responsible for a unique and patriotic tradition on Venice Island, celebrating every 4th of July since 1958 with fireworks and frogs. “Barron starts the day going frog fishing with a few members and their guests. It’s a sport devised by Dan Nomellini, who founded the Venice Island Duck Club with Barron and seven other

members the following year,” explained longtime member Dana Martin. “From a jeep, he uses a bamboo pole to dangle a crawdad lure (or a piece of red yarn on a treble hook) in front of a frog down in an irrigation ditch. Once the frog takes the bait, he’s hauled up and stuffed into a gunny sack. We go back and clean the frogs, then have a huge frog leg fry for lunch.” Hilton ends Independence Day with a bang. “Back in 1958, I lit an assortment of rockets and pinwheels off the levee for the amusement of my children, using my cigar as a punk,” Hilton said. “That first year, I noticed that half a dozen boats had stopped to watch the celebration. The next year, there were twice as many boats, and in every succeeding year, it seemed to grow like an amoeba.” For the past 30 years, professional pyrotechnicians fire off a 25 minute display, shot off a barge donated by Delta contractor Bill Dutra, and the entire show is choreographed to patriotic music. Depending on the day of the week, the spectacle draws an estimated audience of 5000 to 10,000, all watching from boats. In 1999,

the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department estimated that 5000 boats, with some 25,000 spectators, had rafted up or anchored off Venice Island to watch the show. “Barron has found a way to give back to the area that has meant so much to him throughout his lifetime,” added fellow duck club member Tom Simms. “He has set up an endowment for the fireworks show, ensuring that Delta residents will be able to celebrate the 4th of July off Venice Island for generations to come.” Barron asked Simms to serve as president of the Delta Independence Day Foundation. So remember stay at the Hiltons so we can have fireworks. ~ BA-BOOM and

4th of July 2015 is in the books and the SRBCNC cruise to Mandeville, I believe was a huge success!

Spare Time, Trow’s Nest and Toy yoT arrived on Wednesday, Déjà vu Again, Plan B and Great Escape were there on Thursday. Friday was In His Time, Deanna’s Dream Sea Norita, Savasana, Endless Weekend, Sea Champ, Priscilla E, Bom Vida, Cheryl Leigh, Smart Choice, Vanilla Float, Happy Ours, Absolut Getaway, and Coventina. Saturday was Sea Wench and SeaRageous . I believe that I even saw Squigy Lady’s crew and QM2’s crew out for a dinghy run. Oh, and don’t forget M&M’s Captain!

A huge thank you to the co-cruise leaders: Dave Heller, Dan Hand, Craig Burger and Roger Kelly. Also, big thanks to Roy Vinyard, Ken Humphrey, Frank Ortega and Scott

Hamrick-Landcastle. Without all of you I wouldn’t have looked nearly as good. It’s a wonderful thing to know that there are members who are always willing and wanting to help.

We thought we would move to an area where no one else went, boy did we miss that one.

We thought that by using anchor buddies, we would stake our territory as non-wake, boy did we miss on that one.

We thought that using the anchor buddies would make retrieval easier, in some cases yes in others not so much!

Although we had a lot of current, we made the best of it. It was so hot that everyone was in the water. Susan has a picture of my thermometer reading 111. I saw it hit 128. Okay so it was behind glass and in direct sun!

And aren’t George and

Linda just the best Grandparents? They provided the dinghy and Ken.

We did have a couple of Mudhens, the usual suspects, and some with multiple counts against them. Which leads me to something that I have wanted to say to the group for some time; please, when working on deck, especially someone else’s deck, wear deck shoes not flip flops or worse bare feet. Beyond that I don’t believe you need an explanation.

And lastly, How ‘bout those fireworks? FABULOUS!

Keep the shiny side up - John

Ed & Tech Director Steve Salzman

One of the most important safety items we carry onboard our SeaRays, next to PFDs of course, is a portable fire extinguisher. Depending on the size of your boat, you may carry more than one, as required by the Coast Guard. Boats 26’ – 40’ are required to have at least two B-1 (CG Class) fire extinguishers on board, unless you have an approved fixed fire suppression system in the engine room. Larger boats are required to have three. More is always better.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Kidde Portable Equipment Company is conducting a recall of plastic valve

fire extinguishers. This recall involves 31 models of Kidde disposable fire extinguishers with Zytel® black plastic valves. A faulty valve component can cause the disposable extinguisher not to fully discharge when the lever is repeatedly pressed and released during a fire emergency, posing a risk of injury. The recalled extinguishers can be red, white or sliver in color and are either ABC or BC rated. The ratings can be found to the right of the nameplate. Extinguishers manufactured July 23, 2013 through October 15, 2014 are the subject of this recall. A 10 digit date code is stamped on the side of the cylinder, near the bottom. Digits 5 through 9 represent the day and year of manufacture in DDDYY format. Date codes for recalled units in 2013 are XXXX 20413 X through XXXX 36513 X and 2014 are XXXX 00114 X through XXXX 28814 X. Models included in the recall are

Mariner 10, Mariner 110 and the Mariner 5G. Visit www.kidde.com or www.CPSC.gov for a comprehensive list of all models involved.

These extinguishers were sold at West Marine, Home Depot, Menards, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores nationwide, and were also sold online. Kidde has received reports of fire extinguishers failing to discharge completely as expected. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.

If you have one of these models of portable fire extinguisher you should contact Kidde immediately for a replacement. They can be reached toll-free at (855) 283-7991. Take a few minutes to see if any of your onboard fire extinguishers are part of this recall effort. I know I will be checking mine the next time I am aboard.

See you down river.

Steve

Greetings from Tahoe! One of the benefits of belonging to PICYA is dropping in for a cold beverage at a reciprocal club and that’s just what Sue and I did on our vacation. Located at the Tahoe Marina in Tahoe City, the Tahoe Yacht Club is a wonderful spot to take in the sights and sounds of boating on beautiful Lake Tahoe. Since I was with Sue we decided to add a few photos to this month’s article, because as everyone knows, a picture is worth a thousand words.

As in the Delta there are bone head boaters on Tahoe. We watched a skipper try to bring his boat into a dock, no lines, no fenders, and his first mate standing on the deck - no lifejacket! In addition he kept hitting the throttle and she had a difficult time maintaining her balance! It was quite a show! We also watched a boat load throw their line to the deck hand at the gas dock and guess what? It wasn’t attached to the boat!!!

The drought in California is serious and nothing makes it more apparent than to look at the Truckee River, which in many locations is dry, dry, dry. Up at the dam, there isn’t any water! No reason to stop at Fanny Bridge - nothing to see! On the lake side of the dam are buoys and booms sitting in the grass! In fact, there are River Closed signs up and down the river. So needless to

say, no river rafting this year. We need to keep up the individual efforts in our homes and keep our eyes on our legislatures who are looking for ways to maintain water quality and take care of the wonderful ecosystem we call the Delta. SRBNC dues support Restore the Delta. If you would like to stay informed on the latest information, sign up for their email updates. In the meantime, we can all pray for a wet winter!

In His Time,

Roy
