JULY 2016 A casual visitor to Ide in June might be forgiven for thinking that they’d stumbled into one of the more scary episodes of Dr Who! The first sign that all was not quite as normal was the sudden appearance of a number of rather sinister shrunken heads on stakes outside the Hub, together with some mini scarecrows impersonating royalty. This unsettling manifestation was closely followed by the arrival of life-sized queen imposters all around the village, on occasions fraternising with the locals! Alien invasion? Read more on pages 6 and 8. Items for the August Ide Times should be sent to Ann Boyce, email [email protected] by the 20th July please.

IDE PARISH COUNCIL idevillage.org.uk If you have anything you wish to be discussed, please bring it to the attention of one of the councillors or contact the clerk for it to be included on the agenda for the next meeting.

Next Parish Council Meeting: Wednesday 13th July 2016 at 7.30 in the Memorial Hall. This will start with a ten minutes’ slot allocated for public participation. The agenda will be posted on the notice board in Coronation Gardens and the website by 6th July. The minutes of meetings are posted on the notice board and the website.

Park & Ride: Devon County Council has withdrawn the planning application for the Park & Ride at Round Field. Any further information received will be passed on through future copies of Ide Times and on the village website.

Parish Poll: The cost of the Parish Poll was £654. We are grateful to the returning officer for her efforts in keeping the costs to a minimum.

Play Area: We have heard from the Coastal Recycling Community Fund that our grant application has been unsuccessful. We are naturally disappointed but haven’t given up hope as we have been advised to try again for their next round of funding. In the mean-time we are working on getting the surface work finished so that the play area can be opened. Any further fund-raising ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Road closure: We have been advised that Old Ide Lane and Fore Street will be closed with effect from 4th July for necessary work to replace the sewer. Diversions will be in place. For additional information, please contact South West Water on 0344 346 2020

Parking: We have received several complaints about illegal and dangerous parking around the village, particularly on double yellow lines in the High Street. This has been reported to the authorities. If you wish to report occurrences direct, please contact Devon County Council Civil Enforcement Officers by email to [email protected] or on the website new.devon.gov.uk/roadsandtransport or by phone to 0345 155 1004

JUBILEE CLUB We were treated to a fascinating talk on May 23rd when Mr Cripps told us about his life and love of music resulting in being trumpeter to the queen. From an early age his ability to copy and pitch to the correct note was recognised. He also had a love of sport and aged 14 had trials to play football and was accepted by Manchester United, but a visit to a concert at Kneller Hall was the deciding factor as to his future. He joined the army as a boy musician aged 15 where the standard of tuition was second to none. In 1952 he was selected to join the Royal Fellowship of Musicians and to play at the Coronation. The big day arrived, they reported at 5.30am to find their position and rehearse. Mr Cripps played a tape of the occasion, which sounded wonderful. Following this they were invited to tea at Buckingham Palace, china teacups, salmon sandwiches, remember there was still rationing! The Queen and her entourage arrived apologising for interrupting their tea and said "thank you for making my day perfect". His career continued playing under Sir Malcolm Sergeant, Ted Heath and touring Europe. The talk was completed with Mr Cripps playing a bit of Satchmo and What a Wonderful World. Believe me it was spine tingling.

We welcomed two new members Jean Wood and Jill Davison.

On June 6th it was a pleasure to have Mr Whitton of Whitton and Laing come with his collection of interesting objects to talk about antiques. Members had brought along a selection of their own treasures, some to prove of only sentimental value, others of interest and maybe more value. Mr Whitton had a gavel given to "Old Man" Laing for acting at a Red Cross auction in the Cathedral in December 1915. It was presented by Earl Fortescue and is made of Ivory later to be used by Mr Whitton's father.

A bouquet was given to Christine in celebration of Christine and Tony's Ruby Wedding Anniversary.

June 20th was Strawberry Tea Time. For this special event we meet in Longdown Village Hall and were treated to a musical afternoon provided by children from Dunsford School. They started with an amusing song about breakfast followed by ‘’Together We Try’’ describing the aims of Dunsford School. There followed toe-tapping songs from West End Shows, including some young amazing soloist singing ‘’Don't Cry for me Argentina’’ and ‘’Midnight’’. There was a Sir Rod Stewart's song ‘’I Don't Want to Talk About it’’ and a fun song with actions, ‘’Big Cheese’’. Well done those children and Mr Parker their teacher. We welcomed a new member David Lovell. DIARY DATES July 4th Outing to Bennets Water Gardens leaving Ide at 10am.

of us will be walking around the village while we pray, and others are

welcome to pray together at the church. Please join us!

We look forward to seeing you…

IDE COMMUNITY SHOP & POST OFFICE

As always the delicious Balls Farm strawberries have been flying out of the shop. Remember you can order them, including the very good value jamming strawberries. Their raspberries should also be available soon but there has been an unprecedented interruption to the supply. The newly emerging shoots were utterly decimated by rabbits who took them down to ground level. Paul Ward is mystified as to why they should suddenly have taken a fancy to his raspberry canes. This year we are aiming to provide beautiful flowering patio and container plants throughout the summer, so if there are any gaps in your garden that need a spot of colour do call in to see what we can offer (for very competitive prices!). Thank you to everyone who pops their change into the Air Ambulance collection tin. It was opened recently and found to contain £129.73, which must be a record! Some of this would have come from the sales of David Garnsworthy’ s Ide book (thank you David) but it still shows how just giving little bits can make a really worthwhile contribution. One of our regulars called in recently having just returned from an 800 mile cycle ride from Amsterdam to Copenhagen, following an itinerary strongly influenced by advice he received from one of our shop staff and fuelled by the shop’s dried dates …who needs Trip Adviser when you’ve got Ide Shop!?

Post Office News Talking of foreign travel, you can order your foreign currency here and then pick it up the next day, which has to beat fighting your way into Exeter.

Calling all Pink Floyd fans The Post Office are celebrating Pink Floyd, one of the most influential and successful British bands of all time, with a superb range of stamps, limited edition souvenirs and gifts. These items will be released on 7 July 2016. 5.

The Hub@Ide The children of The Hub have had a brilliant June. We celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with a life-size scarecrow of Her Majesty and Prince Phillip, along with lots of little loyal subjects which were displayed in our garden. The children loved the opportunity to create their own scarecrows and they have been the talk of the village. We talked about how the words we use show what is in our hearts (from Luke 6:45) so we should be using good, kind and encouraging words.

Then we met again to create chocolate treats for Fathers’ Day. With choice gifts of racing cars, slippers and cake, along with Star Wars themed chocolate moulds and we played a very exciting Chocolate game. We heard how the Word of God is as sweet to our taste as honey is to our mouths (Psalms 119:103). ‘Dad’s we hope you enjoyed being spoilt – we appreciate all you do for us!’ For those of you planning your August holidays – we have an exciting 4 days planned. On Wednesdays 3rd, 10th, 17th 24th August, we would love you to join us on an adventure of ‘The senses!’ Plenty to entertain the kids, including a BBQ on a farm… Watch this space! July Programme Thurs 7th July 10:30-12 Coffee Morning Thurs 14th July 7:30pm *NEW* Vinyl Club – Craig comes to show how to care for your vinyls. Dig out what you have and bring a few along. The Fete which was held on the Green on the 11th June was a great success due to the enormous amount of help given by so many people. The loose grass on the Green was picked up, gazebos were erected, tables and chairs collected and arranged, electric power provided and the rain stayed away except for just one or two spots. The Fete had a royal theme to enable us to celebrate the Queen's 90th Birthday. Eve Jennings entered fully into the spirit of the occasion as the Queen's Deputy with Peter Satterly as her escort, along with various members of her family.

We all enjoyed listening to Jaz and Charlotte singing and watching Ide School.children doing the maypole dancing. The egg throwing competition had us all gasping as eggs were thrown further and further to be caught very carefully! The Twinning tent was full of industrious workers making models of the Queen, which I am sure you have all seen seated around the village. Various people have had quite a shock when seeing a strange lady slumped on a seat by the Green in the evening, with rather strange legs!

The exhibition of paintings, photographs and hand crafted hats in the church was much admired. Nearly 30 local people exhibited their work. Who would have guessed that there was so much creative talent in the village! There were also beautiful and imaginative flower arrangements produced by different organisations in the village on display in the church. The event gave Ollie and Caitlin an opportunity to raise money for their trip to Malawi next year.

We raised almost £2,000 for the church which will help to keep St Ida's going - we have to find more than £22,000 a year! A donation from this will be sent to FORCE our local cancer charity. Our thanks and great gratitude go to all who helped to make the day such a resounding success.

Messy Church this month will be on Saturday, 9th July, and will be a picnic on the Green. We will start at 11am instead of 10am. It will be a Bring and Share picnic. Brenda Spivey

IDE TWINNING ASSOCIATION The twinning visit across La Manche over the bank holiday weekend at the end of May to celebrate the 40th year of twinning between Ide and Canteloup - Cléville was a great success and enjoyed by all. We met many French Twinners from the early days, many of whom had fond memories of Ide Twinners no longer with us including Peter Spivey, Brian Dumalow, Barry and Audrey Gunter, Tony Belamy and of course Marie Kent. Many expressions of sympathy for Jerry Kent and the boys were passed to us.

Our French hosts did a fantastic job, in the face of fuel grèves and impending orages, to organise the weekend events. There were many photo collages on the walls of the "Sal Polyvalent" showing 40 years of friendship between our

villages. Despite being small in number, nine in total, the French dubbed us la crème de la crème and we were royally received and given an action-packed programme with much feasting and opportunity to sample the delicious local cider. One of the twinners, probably easy to guess who, had ambitious plans

of bringing back beaucoup de bouteilles until Chris Hucker said his back could only manage so much. The coach was sorely missed on this account!

On the Saturday morning the serious business of the council meeting took place, conducted in French, and progress was made towards shaping the future of twinning including addressing how to develop links amongst children and teenagers. The formalities of signing the charter for the 40th year of twinning were followed by the Vice-chair unexpectedly being put into the role of simultaneous translator for the mayor of Canteloup! We were blessed with glorious sunshine for a BBQ and then a visit to a park constructed on a mountain of waste- no poubelles in sight but it was in fact a very beautiful place.

The evening jollities began with the presentation of our gift, mounted copies of three Endicott postcards of Old Ide lent by Kevin Taborn and, in the spirit of recycling, wrapped up in the gold paper the French gift to us had come in, the joke being appreciated by all. The evening involved a multiple course dinner with entertainment by Charlie Chaplin, who although allegedly mort is still alive in Calvados, though there was concern on all sides about whether the elderly gentleman in the role of CC would be requiring a defibrillator during his act, an ideal present for the next trip to France in 2018! The evening finished with a flourish, a firework display, and Lynn wishing she had brought ear-plugs.

The range of linguistic talent was evident the following day on our excursion to the Orme Estuary. Stopping to admire the view from the top of the tower at La Pointe du Siege, you could hear exchanges in French, English and Swedish, Chris Coles enhancing our linguistic credentials, and on the walk back to our picnic spot we also heard a cuckoo. After visiting The House of Nature, a museum detailing the development and protection of the area of natural beauty and extensive bird life of the La Pointe du Siege, we were rewarded with beer at teatime, an interesting French take on a cuppa. The evening was spent enjoying the hospitality of host families before an early morning departure back to Blighty.

Co-ordinator Jane Greenslade Tel 428902 email jane.greenslade @nhs.net We support patients by providing volunteer transport to medical appointments for elderly and disabled people, befriending isolated people and providing information/ support for carers.

The coffee morning and book sale was well supported and we took approx. £240. Many thanks to Ray, Gail, Georgie and their team of volunteers and to the Alphington walking group who came there for their coffee break. A representative from Age UK attended with lots of useful information and we also had Carers information available as it was Carers Week.

The sponsored bike ride went very well. Taking part were Dr Steve Vercoe, Dr Sam Hilton, Dr Ruth Magill, receptionists Julie and Phoebe, plus some family members and volunteers. Unfortunately the heavens opened when we were half way to Cockwood but we carried on regardless! We had

lunch in the rain outside the pub with some of us retreating to the bike shelter. So far we have raised just over £400. A big thank you to those who cycled and to everyone who sponsored us.

PAST LIVES My Ide Adventure Maggie Skeet

My introduction to life in Ide was when I was asked to judge the children's fancy dress competition at the School Fete in the summer of 1981. A rather daunting task since I was the head teacher-in-waiting and anxious that I didn't offend my new pupils! I chose a young girl dressed as one of the "boat people" which were in the news that year and there were no repercussions that I knew of. I did not know then that this was to be the beginning of the happiest period of my teaching career. I was excited. This was my first Headship and I was thrilled that, after 15 years of teaching, I could put into practice all that I felt was wonderful about educating young children. I was fortunate in having a series of very talented teachers to work with me. Diana Sanders was a great producer of shows at Christmas. One in particular stays in my mind. It arose from a chance encounter that I had on a train when travelling to see my parents in Peterborough, my home town. Seated beside a man with a price ticket on the cuff of his suit I felt duty bound to point it out. He was very grateful and the ensuing conversation revealed a] that he had begun his work life as an apprentice in my grandfather's bakery and b] that he had just returned from India where several years before as a potential catholic priest he had been horrified by the plight of young boys begging on Bombay's [now Mumbai] train station. Since that time he had given up the idea of priesthood and decided to set up homes for these children. He had started a charity known as "Boys Towns" and had come to England to raise funds. I was so impressed that I invited him to come to talk to Ide children and thus began a long relationship between the Joe Homan 's charity and Ide School. One of the stories Joe told of his work with the boys was that they built their first building, a chicken house, with baked bean tins [the beans having been eaten!] filled with mud! This was the main theme of the Christmas show that year. We tried to make school life exciting and interesting with a variety of events and visits. Many of them arranged by Mrs Rowberry or Mrs Hayton [ now Worthington]. Some that maybe remembered by past students included trips to Yarde ice cream factory, the blind dog training centre, the butterfly farm and the Beatrix Potter exhibition. I'm ashamed to say that I can't remember the Centenary year for the School Clock but we all dressed up as Victorians. Bill Rowlands and Reg Marshall joined in the fun. Of course Joyce Stevens was there. She was a much loved helper in the school and everyone was sad in 1989 when she retired. One of the most exciting events was in 1985 when we managed to raise enough money for the Adventure Play ground which included several climbing structures and an old tractor which was much loved.

Sometime later a School Garden was formed from the garden which actually belonged to the school house. A pond, bat house and individual gardens were made and the children grew peas and beans. In those days Health and Safety issues were more flexible! Parents of the children were very much engaged with school life helping with fund raising and helping in many ways to give the children the experiences that we thought would enhance their education. In one instance, Mrs Hayton found a company which would create a sundial to suit our situation and it was painted on the playground by a parent. I did find myself in trouble when I allowed the chestnut tree on the boundary of the school to be pollarded in 1984. There were just three bare branches reaching upwards when it was done and representations were made to Devon County and to me complaining about this desecration. I'm delighted to notice that it appears to have survived to this day. Now, in 2016, it is lovely to know that the Maypole , bought sometime in the 80's is still being put to use each year at the Church Fete. Despite retiring in 1992, Ide school and village has stayed as a warm memory and now that have reconnected with Ide through the Art Group, I feel that in some sense I have come home.

THE WEST TOWN FARM COMMUNITY TRUST NEWS

Open farm Sunday came and went with a boom with over 400 of you popping up to say Hi. It was a great day, not only for us, but for the hundreds of other farms up and down the country with one of the highest overall turnouts to date. Encouraging and welcome news considering a recent survey showed that 20% off primary school children don’t know that bacon comes from pigs. We have a very busy month ahead full of weddings, corporate bookings and birthday parties galore. We’re looking for a little occasional help with our events bar, so if you or anyone you know is interested please email [email protected] or give us a call on 01392 811257. The 9th and 10th of July will see us play host to D’arts fest for the second year running. As some of you may remember, D’arts fest is a music festival for people with learning disabilities and their friends, family and carers. The event was fantastic last year, the topography of the farm really lending itself as a safe enclosed environment. If this sounds like something you’d like more information on, please check out www.facebook.com/dartsfest2015 or email [email protected]. Thanks,
