Nobles and Ladies,

Don’t look back, because we are not GOING that way!

Please understand, we have a rich and very meaningful 130 years of history at this Great Temple, and we will never forget and continue to learn from it. Remember

this phrase “But we’ve always done It that way,” that’s what I’m talking about. We don’t have to do it that way! We don’t have to always be looking back at how they use to do it because that doesn’t work a lot of times anymore. So I propose were not going that way. We need to look at fresh new ideas and think outside the box. That’s how we are going to intrigue new members and keep our membership engaged.

June has been a busy month! On June 3rd The Rochester Area Shrine Club and The Dragon Patrol hosted a picnic. It turned out to be very wet but our Oriental Guide Larry Norte and Lady Audrey had us all sit under roof at their very nice “Party Barn” Thanks to the Norte’s. We had over 40 Shriner’s, family and kids in attendance. I was finally able to Join the local Zagalas group and pull out the orange convertible and parade at Pine Island on Sunday June 5th. We had 14 cars in the parade showing off the Red Fez’s and hauling local dignitaries. Tuesday June 7th was another great day as Jerry Johnson, Neil Clymer, Russ Christofk, John Davenport, Jack Kirsch, Jack Zeverino and Tom West all Shriners from Osman and several from Zuhrah Shrine came together once again as a team. They met with Dave Alvin and his students from the Kenwood Trail Middle School in Lakeville to receive another donation of $1000 for the Shrine Hospital. Thanks Nobles for representing Osman so well. Thursday June 9th The Austin Shrine Club hosted their annual Pork chop/steak fry. We enjoyed some excellent food and wonderful hospitality. I think Terri and I have been going every year since we were the Divan Reps years ago. Sean Gardiner our 1st Ceremonial Master, and their Osman Representative this year also enjoyed the fun. In addition, Ill. Sir Roger Berge and Lady Jennifer (2014 Potentate) and Ill. Sir

Jeff Olsen and Lady Julie (2015 Potentate) also were there to share in the good eats and great fun.

June 14th was our Stated Meeting and what a Great night it was. Before the meeting we had another Mini-Ceremonial where we added to our most Prestigious Class of 2016. Then I had the honor of presenting the 60 year, 50 years, and 25 years of membership certificates. The Temple Jewel is the highest award that one can receive from our Temple and Potentate. I had the pleasure of recognizing a dedicated, devoted and sometimes stubborn man with a passion. The same passion many of us have, being a better man and helping the Children while having fun. I cannot express enough to you how much (mostly behind the scenes) work Art Pavlish my Chief Aide has helped Osman, not only this year but many years in the Rochester area. Congratulations Art…You earned it!

On June 18th St. Cloud was my next stop, where North Star Lodge #23 put together a very meaningful and productive One Day to Masonry. A lot of men went through the degree work that day and Burt Rovner our Co- Membership Chairman was there with our membership booth. He was displaying what Osman Shrine has to offer when it’s time for them to take the next step in becoming an Osman Shriner. June 24th was our 1st Temple parade in Rochester. I was so proud of all the Units that came out to represent Osman Shrine. We had a lot of fun and got a lot of positive exposure in the public’s eye. We then moved on to our Oasis at the hotel where we had enjoyed pulled pork sandwiches and all the fixings. Performer Bruce Bowman entertained us with some great music. Bright and early Saturday morning our famous Ceremonial team helped initiate many fine candidates into the premier fraternal organization for men of good character “Shriners International “. After the Ceremonial the Ladies had a nice luncheon. My Divan and I made a quick stop in to thank the ladies for all their support. The men had a nice box lunch and the rest of the afternoon to have a little fun or just relax. That night was our Gala event, a night that we will remember forever. There was a lot of Pomp and Circumstance at

the onset of the evening. Culminating with 2 hilarious comedians and lots of fun. Terri and I want to thank everyone that helped put this spectacular weekend together and all of you that were able join us.

Osman won an Honorable Mention for the Shriner’s International Dromedary Award for our Osman Magazine. Thanks to all of you who summit articles and pictures. Mark your calendars for the Osman’s Family Picnic which is just around the corner on July 31st at Como Park. There will be lots of fun activities for all ages. Our Midwest summer session in Marquette, MI is August 4th -6th. Make it a family vacation and enjoy the competitions and parades. Don’t forget the First Annual Osman Membership Golf Classic August 28th. Sign up to golf or sponsor a hole as the proceeds go to our local Osman Women’s Auxiliary. We are coming down to the wire on signing up for our Potentates Trip to New York. So if you’re looking to have the time of your life and create some lasting memories and friendships “Pick up the phone and give us a call and sign up today”. We are moving towards the middle of the parade season already so make sure you double check your equipment be safe and have fun. Remember if you haven’t paid your dues for 2016 it is time they were due on Jan 1st. Sometimes our worlds get a bit crazy with everything going on in our day to day lives. So I like to read our Mission Statement just to remind myself of why I put the time and effort into the Shrine.

Our mission and why we parade is to help kids. We assist, along with other shrine units to help provide the funds necessary to build and maintain our 22 Shrine Hospitals for children with orthopedic problems, burns and spinal cord injuries, to help them live normal, active healthy lives. We do this without regard to race, color, creed, sex, sect, disability, national origin or ability of a patient or family to pay. I would like to add that the FUN we have is important as well. I wish you a fun summer and Remember to REV it up in 2016!

Respectfully yours,

Bruce Thomas Potentate 2016

The Chief’s CornerI think everyone

who attended Rochester Fest, whether it was the parade, the ceremonial, the Gala, or all three had a great time. I am sure

Illustrious Sir Bruce appreciated all the help.

I have received several confirmations, for July parades, and waiting for the packages at the time of this newsletter going to press. I should have the packages and info later this month and will send out in the Weekly Blast updates.

Parade Updates are:

July 9th is Lakeville Pan-O- Prog parade, Lineup is 4pm. Step off is 5:30 pm. I have received our confirmation. Line up number, etc. will be have been supplied by the time you get the July Osman. Oasis will be at Baldy’s BBQ just outside downtown Lakeville on County Road 70 and IH35. Food will be great.

White Bear Ave Parade is July 13th, line up is 6pm, step off 7pm. Confirmation and package was being mailed late June also. The Oasis will be at the same location as last year, North St Paul VFW. This is an evening parade also, with line up at 6pm, step off is 7pm. I am encouraging units participating in this parade to make arrangements to get your Nobles to the staging site as the Chanters wagon may not be available.

MSA is Aug 4-6th, with the 2 parades, the 4th and the 6th. Please see the Osman Newsletter for

details about the MSA event. I hope everyone got signed up at the June Stated Meeting, if they were having difficulty. It was great to have Nobles there to assist anyone needing help.

The bus participation had improved, but not sure if we received enough reservations by the time this was published, so stay tuned to the Blasts.

St Paul Park parade will be returning this year on Aug, 20th. This is a morning parade, line is usually 10am, step off is 11am. Our Oasis would be at the St Paul Park Legion, where we have enjoyed some great food and hospitality, in the past.

I have received an application from the MN State Fair to participate in the Grand Parade again this year. There are quite a few restrictions and I plan to submit our application for the Grand Day parade only, not sure what that day is yet as I can’t seem to get anyone to return my calls. This parade is mostly walking so I will post an update via the Blasts as soon as I have that info. The Fair runs from Aug 25th through Sept 5th.

The Northfield parade Defeat of Jesse James Day’s is Sept 11th. Lineup is 1pm, step off is 2pm. I have submitted our application, trying to get confirmation. Perhaps I will have it by the time this gets printed. An Oasis site is not defined yet, as the logistics of getting to anything in the downtown area is difficult until the parade is over. Still working.

River Falls Parade is Sept 24th. Lineup is 9am, step off is 10:30am. Two Oasis are planned, before the parade at

the American Legion staging site, the 2nd is after the parade at the Legion, and one at the Lynch residence! Great day for fun! Mark your Calendars for the 24th.

Approval for the shelves needed to organize the basement storage room has been granted, I hope to get several units or volunteers to help me in July to get this goal accomplished. I will use the blast to update. Possible dates to consider July 23rd, July 30th, Aug 13th? Otherwise I may just call a few Nobles and do it during the week?

Rochester ZagalasSummer is well

underway, with the first parade of the season in Pine Island, MN. We had 14 vehicles that assisted in carrying both young ladies and young men

though the streets.. Thanks to all that attended. We will have many more opportunities to share our love for the Shrine Children’s Hospital.

We all had a great time at the RASC picnic. Thanks Lady Audrey and Nobel Larry Norte for opening your home for all of us to participate.

We often turn to famous leaders for nuggets of brilliance on how to motivate people or how to achieve success like theirs.

Mike Krzyzewski: “Make sure you

only let good people on your bus.”:

• Billy Graham: “When God calls you to be an evangelist, you don’t stoop to be president.”:

At the RASC it appeared that Illustrious Sir Bruce Thomas gathered the Past Potentates together at the bouncy world gym to get advice on his duties and how he is doing at the half way mark as Potentate of 2016. It was clear that all PP are pleased with his actions.

At the Pine Island Parade Past Potentate Dick Thompson checked with Mighty Mouse on how he was doing with his driving during the parade. You will have to ask PP Dick just what the response was.

How exciting was it to be a part of the Potentate’s Ceremonial and Gala in Rochester. It is so impressive to see just how many Nobles and their Ladies

are involved with Osman. It was so impressive to see all of the different units that gathered together for the oasis and Dinner. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this event so successful.

While we have many events to celebrate this year, we begin with a sad note. Our brother John Howard passed on May 25th at his home in River Falls WI at the age of 89. John, a “LONG TIME” Sheik, served during his entire life. John served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. In addition, he served our brother hood by being active with his lodge #109, the Scottish Rite, and was a member of Osman and Zor Temples. John was also active with the Order of the Eastern Star,

and Jobs Daughters.

The year continues to offer the Sheiks a chance to serve Osman. With Dave Roussopoulos, Steve Hoyer and Art Lemke serving our Potentate as Aids this year, the Sheiks have enjoyed making this a great year.

From the Winter Carnival, Circus, Ceremonials, and the Golf Classic, we have had a chance to REV IT UP!

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

Welcome to summer and the parade season. It is in full force, and the Director’s Staff is ready to participate. Look in the Chief ’s Corner for dates

and times of future parades and also other Shrine functions.

A big thank you to Ron Clarstrom, Glen Anderson, and Randy Bruso for building the new novelty stands for

our circus. Also, a thank you to Chris Christenson, Glen Anderson, Ron Clarstrom, Randy Bruso and Ray Hobot for washing and waxing our parade vehicles.

The Director’s Staff was well represented at the Potentate’s Gala in Rochester. There will be more details on that in next month’s magazine.

On Monday, July 18th, we will be having our summer picnic at the Warehouse, ladies included. It will start at 6:00 PM, and the Director’s Staff will

be furnishing all the food and beverages plus some nice door prizes. We will be celebrating the “90 years plus” birthdays of 3 of our members. One who will be 99 years old.

We are always looking for new members. Remember, we don’t march in the parades, we ride. The photos were taken at the pig roast hosted by Mizpah Lodge #191 at the Croatian Hall in So. St. Paul.

Keep on rollin’ with the Director’s Staff, Kent Swedberg

On June 4th, the Masonic Lodge in Austin was the site for a Pancake Breakfast that was a fund raising event for Jenae Hackensmith, a young reporter at the Austin Daily Herald.

She has a very rare situation that has hospitalized her since mid April 2016. The event was held at the suggestion of our Brothers in the Lodge. Over $3,000.00 was raised as a result. Many

were involved, and we should be proud of what was accomplished.

June was the start of the official parade season, although we did participate in the Memorial Day Parade in Austin, and the presentation of a wreath at the cemetery following the parade (The wreath represents Masons, Eastern Star and Shrine). Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us the following day. A heavy rain that dropped almost 1.5 inches in less than 15 minutes caused

severe damage to the frame for the canopy on our Band trailer.

We are in the process of trying to find a vendor to replace it, as the original vendor no longer makes one the size we need, but this has been difficult as the vendors contacted all refer to standard sizes, which doesn’t work with the size of our trailer.

Our annual steak / pork chop dinner was held on June 9th at the Conservation Club North of Austin. A good turnout with Potentate Bruce Thomas and his lady attending. In addition, PP Roger Berge, PP Jeff Olsen, and Divan Representation Sean Gardiner attended. Thank you for being with us it was appreciated very much.

Now it’s on to parades, with or without a canopy cover, we may be using patio umbrellas again.

Rochester Area Shrine ClubGreetings Nobles and Ladies,

Well parade season is in full swing and everyone is busy! Plans are well underway for many attending MSA in Marquette, Michigan August 3-6. We always look forward to a great time and the opportunity to socialize with other Shrine units while raising money for the Shrine Hospital and Kids. Hope to see you at the many area parades and Temple parades remaining.

The RASC held its annual picnic Friday June 3rd. We had a nice turnout (60) and a lot of fun and socializing was had by all. I want to give a special thank you to Larry and Audrey Norte for hosting this event at their house. With all the rain it was sure nice to have everything inside the shop! Also thank you to the Dragon Patrol for sponsoring this event, and to the Dragons who missed the picnic to parade with Chang in Morristown.

We have a busy and event filled rest of the year ahead of us. The 2016 RASC calendar is shown below. We look forward to the continued support and participation from all of the Units, Nobles and Ladies to help to continue to make this a successful and fun filled year.

Greetings fellow Nobles and Ladies!

With July here now, we’re well into our parade season and we’ve really been hitting the streets! Thank you fellow dragons for

keeping Chang out there for all to enjoy! The time you put into this effort every week is much appreciated!

We’ve adapted now to our new “home” at the Eagles Club in Southeast Rochester. After our first meeting there, we agreed that this would serve us well, for now, at least.

I thought I learned a lot my first year with the Dragon Patrol. How to set Chang up. How to take Chang back down. Patience (let Al get the tail together first…etc.). What our outside walkers do. And on it went.

I’m beginning to think I’m learning MORE now that I’m president.

Naturally. I’ve had to learn how to run a meeting. The trick there is to just sit back, keep quiet and let the guys who really know what they’re doing take care of things!

But now that we’re well into parade season, I’ve learned a number of other things. Like that I need to just keep my mouth shut when it comes to giving

directions…IF I don’t know where I’m going! Right Bert?! And to MAKE SURE that I put everything back in the trailer before we head out on the parade route, or go back home! Right Dale?!

And now some thank yous:

I’ve developed an even greater appreciation for Al Shulfelt, who is in the tail for virtually every parade, now that I’ve had to do it once. Doug Brick will agree. Thank you Al!

I also appreciate:

*Bert Aikens for being an outside walker in some parades already this year. I know that makes him feel good and it makes us feel good, too. Thank you Bert!

*All the telephone calls that Bill Hubbard makes to line up parade participants each week. Thank you Bill!

*Bob Pavek for all his years of driving the cart. Great job, and thank you Bob! You continue to be an integral part of our unit!!!

*And all that Art Pavlish does for our unit, and for me, each week and each month, not only in assisting me with items for this column, but for keeping me on track. Thank you Art!

Thank you, also, to all of the unit members who attended the visitation and/or the funeral for Noble and Dragon Patrol member Dick Navratil in

Pine Island. That was a very nice service and we were proud to participate in the honor guard afterward.

Finally, some reminders:

*We still need members to sign up for some of the parades! We’d like to send a full unit out there each time, if possible, meaning 2 or more outside walkers! Hopefully, you can help us out as we take on the second half of our parade season. Check your schedules and the parade schedule and give Bill Hubbard a call if you haven’t already signed up! Remember why we are doing this, gentlemen!

*Our next Stated Meeting is set for Wednesday, July 27, 7:00 p.m. at the Eagles Club.

Let’s continue to rev it up in 2016!

Fraternally yoursMike Smith

Greetings Nobles of Zuhrah and Osman!

I am sorry to write that I missed the June article for the East Central Shrine Club, but I am happy to say my wife and I were in Maui the first couple of weeks of May, so I missed the due date. While in Maui, a person was attacked and killed by a shark in the area where we usually go. We didn’t even go up to our knees in that area. But the rest of the trip was great.

In my articles I invite everyone who wants to have a good meal and great companionship, to come to the ECSC dinners. It’s a group of Shriners - Osman and Zuhrah Nobles, wives and

widows - plus, if anyone wants to invite a friend to have dinner with us that’s okay too. As a matter of fact, if you know someone who might be interested in becoming a Mason, come to dinner with our group and introduce your friend to your Brother Masons. I am sure that person would be impressed and if you are not a member of the ECSC you will be too.

The next dinner meeting will be Thursday, July 21, 5:30 p.m. on the St. Croix Paddle Boat, 525 S. Main Street, Stillwater. The cost this year is $28.25 a person for a cruise on the St Croix and a BBQ Rib dinner and all the fix’s. All sorts of beverages are available

too. Come out to the paddle boat ride and have some fun with a great group of people. All Shriners - Osman and Zuhrah are invited. It is usually a little breezy, so we will not wear a fez for the outing. It is a good time for members to wear their OZ shirts. Also, depending on the weather, a light jacket might be advisable too. We hope to see you for an evening of good food and fun.

To make reservations: All reservations are made by you to the St. Croix Paddle Boat & Packet Company 651.430.1234 or www.stillwaterboats.com.

Be a Superhero of Summer SafetySummer is a time of playground fun, swimming, boating, camping and other outdoor activities. Unfortunately, these activities can lead to a higher risk of injuries.

Did you know? Summer, knownas trauma season among public health and medical professionals, is a time when serious injuries and unintentional deaths increase dramatically among children.*

Fortunately, many of these injuries can be prevented with a few simple precautions. Shriners Hospitals for Children® wants all kids to enjoy a safe, injury-free summer. Follow some simple tips to become Superheroes of Summer Safety.

Playground 101 Take your children to playgrounds with shock-absorbingsurfaces.

Teach kids to go down the slide feet first, one child at atime.

Remind children to swing sitting down. Encourage themto wait until the swing stops before getting off.

Mowing Matters Teach children to never play on or around a lawnmower, even when it is not in use.

Children under 6 years of age should be kept insidethe home while mowing.

Children should be at least 12 years of age beforeoperating a push lawn mower and at least 16 years of age before operating a riding lawn mower.

Fun on the Water Always have your children wear a Coast Guard approved,properly-fitted life jacket near the water or when participating in water sports.

Educate yourself. Complete a boating safety courseto avoid accidents on the water.

Always check water conditions and forecasts beforegoing out on the water.

Make a Safe Splash Teach children to never swim alone or go near waterwithout an adult present.

Remind kids to always jump in feet first to check thedepth before diving into any body of water.

Tell children to never dive in the shallow end of a poolor into above-ground pools.

Fire Safety Simplified Teach kids to never play with matches, gasoline, lighterfluid or lighters.

Do not leave children unattended near grills, campfires, fire pits or bonfires.

Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguishernearby whenever there is a burning fire.

Leave fireworks to the professionals.

It was great to see so many people at Hospital Days. It was a wonderful event. The Osman Womens Auxiliary manned a Fish Pond for the event. Kathy Flicek, Cathy Sportelli, Laurie Miller, and I had lots of fun putting little toys on the fishing lines as they were thrown into the pond! Thank you ladies for helping with this event!

It seems unbelievable, but the Alexandria Shrine Club has once again had a power wheel chair donated to them for the children at Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities. This is the third wheel chair that the Shrine club has had donated to them and given to the Osman Womens Auxiliary for the Hospital. These power wheel chairs are very expensive, and to receive three of them is just amazing. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Viola Larson from Alexandria gave the wheel chair to Jim Gratias who picked it up from her and delivered it to us at the Hospital. Thank you so much, Jim, for getting this wheel chair and for delivering it to us!!!!

Just a reminder that the Osman Shrine Membership is sponsoring a

Golf Classic on August 28 with the proceeds to go to the Osman Womens Auxiliary. It would be great if everyone could support this upcoming event. If you are not a golfer, you can still join for the dinner. The next scheduled event for the Auxiliary will be a luncheon on Saturday, September 17, at the Cannon Falls Golf Course. We will have a speaker from Shriners Hospital who will talk about our relationship with Mayo Clinic. Please mark your calendar now; so, you won’t miss these fun events!

The Osman Womens Auxiliary hopes you all have a fabulous summer, and we will look forward to seeing many of you at the Parades this summer.

Again, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as your Chairman, and thank you for all of your continued support to the Auxiliary. We would not be able to accomplish our work and make a difference in the lives of the children at our Hospital without your support. We appreciate everything you do. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

DAY 1 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12 Today we’ll fly from Minneapolis (or home city) to New York City! Upon arrival we’ll be transferred to our hotel located right in TIMES SQUARE at the center of Manhattan Island. Tonight is a free night to explore our neighborhood and see how easy it will be to get around. You will also receive a DELI DELIGHT VOUCHER so you can experience a NEW YORK DELI for a meal any time you’re in the Times Square area. MILLENNIUM BROADWAY HOTEL, 145 WEST 44TH STREET, NEW YORK CITY (4 NIGHTS) DAY 2 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13 (Lunch included today) A free morning that may start with an optional early visit to GOOD MORNING AMERICA or the TODAY show. Late morning, we’ll take a stroll to the KNICKERBOCKER HOTEL where we’ll enjoy lunch together. Back in 1870, there were a number of Masons in Manhattan, many of whom lunched “upstairs” at the Knickerbocker Cottage. There the idea of a new fraternity for Masons was discussed and so the Knickerbocker is considered the seed pot of the Shriners. The Knickerbocker Cottage is long gone but the Knickerbocker tradition continues in a hotel that was first built in 1906, closed, and now just reopened in 2015. Today’s included lunch will be “upstairs” where we can reflect on what we as Shriners stand for some 125 years later. Following lunch, we’ll meet our NEW YORK TOUR GUIDE for an informative motor coach tour of Manhattan—East side, West side, all around the town! This evening time to explore our neighborhood of Times Square on your own and perhaps enjoy one of the many local pubs located just outside the hotel. DAY 3 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14 (Lunch and Dinner included today) Another opportunity to walk over to GMA or the Today show this morning if you would like. Later this morning, we will leave by motor coach for a short ride to Pier 83 for our CIRCLE ISLAND CRUISE with a light lunch included onboard. This cruise will give you the best views of the STATUE OF LIBERTY and ELLIS ISLAND. It sails around Manhattan Island so you’ll be on the Hudson & East Rivers, under the Brooklyn Bridge and sail by the UN Buildings and Yankee Stadium. This evening, we’ll enjoy dinner at THE VIEW, the only revolving restaurant in Times Square. Following dinner, we’ll be attending the Broadway production of “ON YOUR FEET!” --the story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, two people who believed in their talent, their music and each other, and became an international sensation! “ON YOUR FEET!” is truly a show made for the lights and energy of Broadway! DAY 4, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15 After breakfast on your own, join your tour director on the NY SUBWAY to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. This will be a somber time as you pay tribute to those lost in the terrorist attacks in 2001. You may also want to sign up for an OPTIONAL visit to the observation decks of #1 World Trade Center—floors 100, 101 & 102. The views are spectacular! After dinner on your own back in Times Square, we will enjoy the Broadway performance of “ALADDIN” and his magic carpet. “ALADDIN” is a wonderful story that we all remember from our childhood! DAY 5, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16 (Lunch included today) Following check-out at the hotel, we will walk across Broadway to Carmine’s on 44th St., New York’s legendary family-style Italian restaurant for an included lunch. Following lunch, we’ll be transferred to our New York City airport for our return flight home. Now we’ll have time to reflect on all the fellow Shriners we met on the trip and how friendly NYC can be - WOW!
