July 2017 Monthly Catalogue Welcome to the July 2017 edition of the NHBS Monthly Catalogue, which lists all new titles added to our website in the last month. For readers interested in marine fauna, we have an exceptional range of books this month. Princeton University Press will publish Field Guide to the Fishes of the Amazon, Orinoco, and Guianas in December. English-language literature on fishes of South America, especially at an affordable price, is hard to come by, so this book will be welcomed by many. Wild Nature Press has announced In the Company of Seahorses for July. The Field Studies Council has just published an addition to its long-running series Synopses of the British Fauna, Volume 60: Marine Gastropods 1: Patellogastropoda and Vetigastropoda, and the Paris Natural History Museum announced the French Guide de la Faune Profonde de la Mer Méditerranée: Explorations des Roches et Canyons Sous-Marins des Côtes Françaises (July), which describes deep-sea fauna on submarine rocks and canyons of the Mediterranean Sea. December looks like it will be a feast for birdwatchers, as we are expecting two new Helm Field guides from Bloomsbury: Birds of Oman and the long-awaited Birds of Ecuador. Before that, however, they will reissue three photographic field guides in November: Birds of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, Birds of Java, Sumatra and Bali, and Birds of the West Indies. Cornell University Press is publishing Vanished and Vanishing Parrots: Profiling Extinct and Endangered Species (December). September will see the release of Handbook of the Mammals of the World, Volume 7: Rodents II . Another noteworthy mammal title, available now, is the Mammal Atlas of North-East Scotland and the Cairngorms. The final book worth mentioning here, though encompassing more than just mammals, is Wildlife of the Pyrenees. For entomologists interested in feeding signs of moths, have a look at Micro-Moth Field Tips: A Guide to Finding the Early Stages in Lancashire and Cheshire. Despite the implied limited geographical scope, this book will be of use in many regions of the UK, and there are very few books documenting this. The World Biodiversity Association just published another of their handbooks: Dragonflies and Damselflies of Europe, which is available now. Another invertebrate title that is worth mentioning is Fossil Crustacea of Lebanon (July). For botanists, the Field Studies Council has released a new fold-out guide, Guide to Flowers of Walks and Waysides. A harder to find title we discovered this month is Henderson’s Malaysian Wild Flowers: Dicotyledons from the Malaysian Nature Society. For ecologists and conservation biologists there are several solid titles in the months ahead: Data Analysis in Vegetation Ecology (3rd edition, October), Seascape Ecology: Taking Landscape Ecology into the Sea (December), Conservation Paleobiology: Science and Practice (November), and Living in the Anthropocene: Earth in the Age of Humans (October) But we have some lighter reading this month as well. The London Natural History Museum will publish the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year portfolio (October), and we have the privately published Orange Omelettes & Dusky Wanderers: Studies and Travels in Seychelles Over Four Decades As always, if you are looking for a particular title that we do not yet have in our range, or you would like to suggest a title for NHBS to stock, please do get in touch.
