“The mission of the Nahant Council on Aging is to provide physical, emotional, and mental stimulation

enabling those sixty and over to achieve engaged and fulfilling lives in a safe environment.”

Nahant Council on Aging Our Mission

A summer afternoon at the beach

Sitting on sand by` my granddaughter

Watching her leap in the white-capped water

Stretching as far as she can reach.

A girl as light as a butterfly —

That's Nahant on the Fourth of July!

She tells me about the town races

And yesterday's Horribles Parade,

Crazy costumes, but she's not afraid

Of all the silly, scary faces.

She's independent and she is spry —

That's Nahant on the Fourth of July.

Now for a picnic and lobster bake!

The flag flies red, white and blue.

I pray for freedom (as I chew)

But now it's time for sweets and cake.

American as apple pie —

That's Nahant on the Fourth of July.

At nine o'clock on Bailey's Hill

The fireworks come out in power

As glorious as a meteor shower,

But safe with the firemen's wise skill.

Fireworks flashing in a dark blue sky —

That's Nahant on the Fourth of July.

My grandchild and I gently cuddle.

And soon my darling is fast asleep.

I pray for the world and the vasty deep,

I dream of peace as we softly snuggle.

Friends — family— and small fry —

That's Nahant on the Fourth of July!

Tick-borne diseases are on the rise. An estimated 50,000 new cases are contracted every year in

Massachusetts. You can take steps to avoid getting sick:

When outdoors, wear light-colored clothes and spray them with Permethrin.

Spray your skin with bug spray containing DEET, Picaradin, IR3535, or oil of

lemon eucalyptus. Deep Woods OFF is a good choice.

Keep your indoor-outdoor pets tick free, and consider keeping them off your bed. Talk with your

veterinarian regarding the best treatments.

After gardening or walking in the woods or fields, take a shower to wash off any ticks before they

can latch on.

Do a tick check with a mirror.

Found a tick attached? Use fine-tipped tweezers to grab it near your skin and pull steadily

straight out. Do NOT use Vaseline, a lit match, peppermint oil, or other method.

If it is summer, and you feel like you have the flu, see your doctor to be checked for tick-borne

diseases.

Need more information? Stop by the library and ask about their STOP LYME Handbook or

other resources to answer your questions.

Fire Safety for Older Adults

Older Adults at Greatest Risk for Fire Death

Older adults, those age 65 and above, accounted for 14% of the

population, but 36% of the fire deaths in 2015. They were nearly

two and a half times as likely to die in a fire.

The Nahant Fire Department will host an informative presentation at the Tiffany Room

regarding fire safety for older adults. Frank Pappalardo will offer helpful tips and answer your

questions about avoiding injury and staying safe this summer season.

The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, July 13 at 12:15.
