I hope you’re taking some time this summer to relax and reflect. And since summertime often features somewhat “lighter fare”, and since it’s also the time for summer “blockbusters” I thought I would share one of my favorite Jewish educational exercises.

The premise of the exercise is as follows: Let’s say you’re a renowned movie director. A major studio has offered to hire you to direct an epic motion picture called “The Hebrew Bible”. Your producers have given you an unlimited budget, and your movie can be as lengthy as you choose. Your main responsibility is to hire the best living actors and actresses to play the characters. Given that, which thespians do you pursue, and why?

When I’ve done this exercise, I’ve received many different suggestions. What follows below is a sample cast:

God: Morgan Freeman Adam: Ryan Gosling Eve: Emma Stone Noah: Tom Hanks Abraham: Leonardo DiCaprio Sarah: Jennifer Lawrence Isaac: Daniel Radcliffe Rebecca: Natalie Portman Jacob: Brad Pitt Rachel: Angelina Jolie Leah: Jennifer Aniston Moses: Daniel Day-Lewis Pharaoh: Patrick Stewart Aaron: Colin Firth Miriam: Anne Hathaway Joshua: George Clooney Deborah: Meryl Streep Samson: Dwayne Johnson David: Denzel Washington Solomon: Matt Damon Esther: Emma Watson Mordechai: Ian McKellan Haman: Mel Gibson Ahasuerus: Sasha Baron Cohen Isaiah: Christian Bale Jeremiah: Sean Penn Ezekiel: Jim Carrey Job: Michael Keaton

Would you see this movie? And how would you alter this cast if it were up to you?

One of the main reasons I enjoy this exercise is because a movie cast says a great deal about how the director sees the story. It follows that the cast choices we would make for this mythical film says a lot about how we understand these biblical characters.

Perhaps you might like to try this exercise to spark a discussion about the most important stories of our tradition. Enjoy the show!

July is a really hot month here in Charleston, but the A/C is working well here at Synagogue Emanu-El.

In July, we have the following activities going on at the synagogue:

July 8th, Saturday is Sisterhood Anniversary Shabbat July 11th, Tuesday, Fast of 17 Tammuz July 21st, Friday Night Live, Blood Drive (Give Blood, save a life) July 31st, Monday, Erev Tisha B’Av I encourage all of you to please come and support the Synagogue in its July activities.

This month I want to highlight our Ritual Committee Chairman, Mitch Gilbert. Mitch, a native of New York, moved to Charleston in 1992. Fortunately for us, Mitch and his wife, Irene, joined Synagogue Emanu-El. Since that time he has been an integral part of the success of our synagogue. Besides being Ritual Committee Chair, Mitch has held several officer positions, is a Gabbai on Shabbat and is a stalwart of our afternoon minyan. He is in charge of our high holiday Aliyah fundraiser. Mitch and Irene have two incredible and talented children. Ben will be attending Columbia University this fall to begin a PHD program. Zach is a rising Sophomore at Berkelee College of Music in Boston. When Mitch is not at the synagogue, he loves to play the guitar, to participate in fantasy baseball (legally) and to follow his hometown favorite New York Mets. We are so lucky to have Mitch on our Board of Directors as ritual committee chair and appreciate his service to the Synagogue. When you see Mitch in the Synagogue, please give him a big shout-out to thank him.

I want to remind everyone that our new prayer books for the High Holy Days have been delivered. I’m sure you’ve received numerous communicat ions about honoring a loved one or paying tribute to someone. We only have 700 books and a dedication costs $50. I encourage you to go online to sign up and/or call the synagogue office at 843-571-3264 to buy a book. To date we have had 458 out of 700 sponsorships, so please get in your sponsorship as soon as possible.

I also want to remind everyone that it’s never too late to make your High Holiday Pledge. Please call the Synagogue at your earliest convenience to make your pledge.

And finally, please mark your calendars for Sunday, December 3rd, for our annual Barbecue. It’s going to be bigger and better than ever. Thank you Mike Engel and the barbecue committee for all of your hard work!!

I hope you have a great July and look forward to seeing you around and in the Synagogue. Thank you.

It is amazing that July is already here. Time seems to fly by every month for me. In June we mailed out our billing for the upcoming 2017-2018 year. Please be sure to renew your membership and pay your dues as soon as possible. Remember you will be enrolled in the "Parking Space Raffle" just for returning your check to us. Our board is busy working on upcoming events and fund raisers. Please note dates below of upcoming events I would like to thank all the ladies who have volunteered to help with these events for the upcoming year! It really makes life easier for me. Also a big thanks to everyone who came by and wished Leah Bowzard in the office a wonderful "15th" anniversary with Emanu-el. Remember to send Jane Kelly a get well card, as Jane had knee replacement surgery on June 20th. Thanks ! I am in the process of talking with leaders for a community service that Sisterhood can provide, I feel strongly that we must give back to our community in a service. I will keep you posted.

Happy 4th of July to everyone, have fun, be safe !

June was a busy month for Men’s Club. For those of you that missed our Spirit Night you missed a great one. Alan Isaccson gave us a great talk on his and Lisa’s recent trip to Israel as volunteers under the Volunteer for Israel program. Thank you Alan for your presentation and experiences while staying on an IDF Base. I want to thank Men’s Club for the beautiful FJMC Tallit that was presented to me at my adult Bar Mitzvah. I will wear it with great pride. Every one enjoyed our Congregational picnic. We thank you Harold for suggesting and organizing the picnic. Harold Grater is Men’s Club Vice President and will become President starting July 1st 2018. Thank you to everyone that prepared our annual 4th of July theme Friday night dinner on Friday June 30th and to everyone who attended and enjoyed the dinner. The only event scheduled for July is Spirit Night Thursday July 13th. Mike Mills and I will be attending the FJMC biannual convention and our club will be presented the Quality Club award. August is a busy month: August 10th is Spirit Night; August 22nd our 4th annual Sunset Harbor Cruise; August 27th is our first Comedy Night featuring comedian Saul Sloman of Atlanta Georgia. We are excited to build on that progress this year - but we need

your help to make that possible. Susanna Agrest-Woodard is looking for more singers to help us reach new musical heights. Will you join us? Please contact Susanna at

To Shirley & Mike Mills on the birth of their first granddaughter.

We wish to thank our many friends at Emanu-El

for their recent anniversary wishes as we celebrated our 47th on June 14th.

To all who stopped by and called in honor of my 15th Anniversary with Emanu-El– Leah Bowzard

We rely on our synagogue members, their friends and

families, to let us know when someone is hospitalized, suffering

an illness, or bereavement. We would also like to hear the good news, such as

celebrating a birth, graduation, special award, promotion or any other simcha.

In order to better keep everyone informed, please share this information with us by calling the office

at 873-571-3264.

Thank you for your help!

Many thanks for your great spirit and hard work! Amazing how much
