DKI APCSS Director, James Hartsell travelled to Bangladesh with Admiral Harry Harris, the Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command. Among the distinguished Bangladesh officials with whom Admiral Harris met were the three Bangladesh Service Chiefs, all of whom are DKI APCSS alumni: Chief of Army, General Abu Belal Huq TSC12-2; Chief of Navy, Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed EC01-3; Chief of Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar EC06-3 and Major General Firoz Hasan (TSC16-2). Several other alumni, including Air Vice Marshal Sanaul Huq, TSC17-1; Director General Shah Ahmed Shafi, CCM08-1; recently promoted Brigadier General Salim Chowdhury, CSRT14-1; and Joint Secretary Md. Abdul Karim, ASC16-1, joined Admiral Harris and Director Hartsell for a roundtable security discussion. Director Hartsell also met with several distinguished alumni who are interested in re-invigorating the Bangladesh DKI APCSS Alumni Association and expanding relations with the Center. While visiting the Philippines, DKIAPCSS Professor Ginnie Watson metwith officials from the National SecurityCouncil, the Anti-Terrorism Council andthe National Defense College to markettwo upcoming workshops: “NationalSecurity Coordination” and “CounteringViolent Extremism.” She also met withseveral alumni during her visit includingDr. Lorenzo Clavejo, ASC09-2 andCharie Joaquin EC02-3.

In Myanmar, DKI APCSS Professor Miemie Byrd notonly established thefoundations for a successfulsecurity-sector developmentworkshop, she also broke newground as one of the firstforeign academics to lecture atthe Command and General StaffCollege and the NationalDefence College. She also metwith many DKI APCSS alumni.

From July 18-20, DKI APCSS, along withco-host, S. Rajaratnam School ofInternational Studies, conducted a

multilateral workshop in Bangkok Thailand entitled“Disaster Response Regional Architectures: AssessingFuture Possibilities.” Workshop participants from 13 Asia-Pacific locations identified current and emerging response-related issues, trends and strategic implications, and maderecommendations for improved and collaborative regional

disaster responsearchitectures. Adozen DKI APCSSalumni alsoparticipated in thisworkshop. Following theworkshop, the DKI APCSS team also met with the newleaders of the Thailand DKI APCSS Alumni Association todiscuss the future direction of the group.

Susilo Adi Purwantoro (Indonesia),SSTR06-2, attended a DefenseResource Management Institute courseat the Naval Postgraduate School inMonterey California.

Lieutenant General (Ret.) Bala NandaSharma (Nepal), SSD10-1, returned toDKI APCSS as a guest speaker in theCSRT17-1 course. He gave apresentation on “Integrating the MaoistCombatants into Our Army.”

Chuluunbat Sharkhuu (Mongolia),ASC12-1, was elected as the Presidentof the Mongolian Institute forProtection and Security Studies, a non-governmental organization.

Colonel Ray Acorda (Philippines),CSRT12-1, was posted in New Delhi asthe Philippine Defense Attaché.

Inspector ShankarJayeprokash(Mauritius),ASC12-2,launched an

electronic neighborhood watch scheme inUnion Park, Mauritius.

Captain Nalindra Jayasinghe(Sri Lanka), ASC14-3, completed hisMaster’s degree in Maritime Affairs,at the World Maritime University,Malmo, Sweden. He was appointedTraining Captain to the Sri Lankan

Naval and Maritime Academy.
