MMoorree DDaannccee EEttiiqquueettttee TTiippss –– GGoooodd MMaannnneerrss CCoouunntt Keeping with our series on Dance Etiquette Tips, here are some great ones, adapted

from the Fatcat Ballroom website in Phoenix, AZ. http://fatcatballroomdance.com/danceetiquette/

May I have this dance? When you ask someone to dance, be sure to make eye

contact, speak clearly, and smile. If your partner says yes, offer your hand and escort

him or her to the floor. Yes, ladies, you may (and should) ask men to dance too.

Yes, I’d love to. When someone asks you to dance, your response should be, “Yes,

I’d love to.” In a social dance environment, it is customary to say “yes” when

someone asks you to dance unless you don’t know the dance, or you have already

promised that dance to someone else. If you have already committed to another

partner, be sure to dance with the person you turned down the next song or later that

evening.

Thank you, that was fun. When the song is finished, be sure to thank your partner

for a lovely dance. It is fun to dance with a partner who is gracious and appreciative.

No matter your skill level or the skill level of your partner, every dance is an

opportunity for both partners to learn and grow as dancers. It is sometimes hard to

execute moves and follow leads. We must have patience with each other and

encourage each other to keep dancing and developing our skills.

Circulating. In a social dance setting it is appropriate (and desirable) to dance with a

variety of partners. This is critical for developing lead and follow skills and it helps

you meet new people. It is generally poor dance etiquette to monopolize a person’s

dances. If you have danced with the same partner repeatedly and would like to dance

with other people you can simply say, “Thank you, but I would like to dance with

some other people for a while. I would be happy to dance with you again later.”

Cleanliness is Heaven at a Dance. Dancing puts us in very close proximity to each

other and it is important that we maintain good cleanliness and hygiene. Showering

before a dance and wearing clean clothing is essential. A light perfume or cologne is

fine but be aware that some people are sensitive to fragrances. And don’t forget to

wash your hands often throughout the evening.

Walk the lady back to her chair. Escorting the lady on and off the dance floor is

important. Don’t walk away from the lady after the dance and leave her alone in the

middle of the dance floor.

DDaannccee EEttiiqquueettttee TTiipp –– WWhhaatt ttoo WWeeaarr?? One of the many fun things about social dancing is the variety of themes and

special events. Some dances are casual, some dances are formal/semi-formal, and

some dances have special themes that encourage you to be creative with your

dress. Throughout the year you will have many opportunities to dress to the nines

or wear costumes and party outfits in place of regular dance attire.

The social dance scene in our circles tend to follow these guidelines:

✓ The more formal the dance more formal the outfit.

✓ Dressy Casual – The majority of dances at Arbor Hall would fit into this

category. Gentlemen generally wear slacks or khakis, with a polo shirt, dress shirt,

or nice solid color crewneck (long or short sleeve). A tie and sport coat are also

acceptable. Ladies have a wide choice of clothing and generally wear skirts/tops,

dresses, and even slacks. For the ladies, the more it spins the more fun it is to

wear.

✓ Formal/Semi-Formal – We don’t get into all the formalities about white tie,

black tie, etc. Instead, we categorize our balls and special events as formal/semi-

formal. For the men, this means a suit or sport coat, dress shirt and tie (or bow

tie); and often a tuxedo. Ladies wear ball gowns, evening dresses, cocktail

dresses, and other pretty dresses and chic outfits (like flowing pants, etc.). This

style is encouraged for the Anniversary Ball, the President’s Ball, Dance Fair,

Music Hall dances (in Cincinnati), and New Year’s Eve.

✓ Costumes and Fancy Dress – We also have many occasions to wear costumes

and fancy dress. When the clubs announce specific themes, it gives you an

opportunity to be creative and have some fun. Dressing to fit the theme is a great

way to make the evening special, but it is never required. “Dressy Casual” would

be the default alternative. Examples of recent dances with special themes include:

Sock Hop, Mardi Gras, the Renaissance Ball, and of course, Halloween.

✓ Casual – Sometimes we dance causal and wear jeans (or shorts) with an

appropriate top. This style is common at Michael Solomon and Swing & Sway.

Knowing what to wear is not as hard as it seems. A little common sense goes a

long way. When in doubt, follow the crowd and feel free to ask others what they

will be wearing. And, don’t think you have to spend a lot to be in style. You

can find everything you need at consignment stores, thrift shops, and Goodwill.

PPrreessiiddeenntt’’ss CCoorrnneerr DBDC is off to a great 2018. We would like to welcome

all of the new dancers who have joined us over the last

few months. Navigating the social dimensions of

ballroom dancing can be confusing when you first start.

To help make it easier, we will be featuring some

elements of dance etiquette in our next few newsletters.

We hope you will find these tips helpful. Of course, if

you ever have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. The

board, the volunteers, and any member would be happy

to help you. We want your experiences at DBDC to be

enjoyable and we look forward to dancing with you for

years to come.

Anniversary Ball. Your board has been busy setting

things in motion for our annual Anniversary Ball. This

year’s theme is “A Time to Dance.” We will be

celebrating DBDC’s 57-year history on Saturday, April

21, 2018. Tickets are on sale now! $15 for DBDC

Members, $18 for Non-Members and $20 at the door.

We would like to welcome our new volunteers and

everyone who is participating on the event committee.

Joyce Eldridge is our event planning coordinator and she

is doing a great job. There is still time to get involved to

help plan and set up for this special event. Please see

Joyce or any board member to volunteer. We are a

volunteer driven organization and everyone’s

contributions make our club strong.

DDaannccee EEttiiqquueettttee TTiipp -- LLiinnee ooff DDaannccee Progressive dances like Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Two-Step,

Quick Step, Viennese Waltz and Polka, travel around the

dance floor in a counter-clockwise direction, known as the

Line of Dance. Samba also follows the line of dance.

When you are learning a dance that travels, it is best to

stay in the inside lane. Dancers who are traveling quickly

should stay to the outside of the oval. Rumba, Swing,

Cha-Cha, Mambo/Salsa, Hustle, and Bolero are known as

spot dances and do not travel along the line of dance.

Following these traffic tips will help keep you safe and

make your dancing experience more enjoyable.
