I have been on the water most of my life, both as a competitive sailor and a power boater. The sport of sailing has played an important role in my life and that of my family. As part of my love for the yacht club and sailing, my goal as Commo- dore has been to focus on ways we can im- prove our racing/sailing program. Looking at our racing program, the item we are lacking is a club chase boat. For those members who are not sailors, a chase boat supports the race committee by setting inflatable marks, moving the inflatable marks with changing wind conditions, and relaying information on the race course. More im- portantly, a chase boat provides a level of safety and is an impor- tant backup in an emergency situation. I have known sailors to fall overboard while racing. I have been injured while competing in a race and have seen accidents happen. A club chase boat is a smart investment in our racing program. A club member has generously donated a 20’ Sea Craft Center Console hull. The boat requires a new outboard – Evinrude E-Tec 130/150 hp, new electronics, trailer and miscellaneous small items. The board has approved and fronted $15,000 towards a chase boat, and I am estimating that the final cost will be about $20,000. Now I am coming to the membership and asking for monetary donations and volunteers. If you would like to make a monetary donation, make your check payable to Kelly McMartin; the mon- ies collected need to be kept in a separate account from the club finances. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to work on it, please contact me. [See contact and boat info on page 10.] Let’s work together to improve our racing program. Speaking of racing, please join us for the 27 th Annual Tom Collier Regatta on Saturday, July 14 th . It’s a fun day on the water and at the club raising money for cancer research. At the end of July we will be co-hosting the 46 th Annual SBYC to KHYC Race. It’s one of our signature races, and we are looking forward to a great turnout of sailors and boats. I have been on the water most of my life, both as a competitive sailor and a power boater. The sport of sailing has played an important role in my life and that of my family. As part of my love for the yacht club and sailing, my goal as Commo-dore has been to focus on ways we can im-prove our racing/sailing program.

Looking at our racing program, the item we are lacking is a club chase boat. For those members who are not sailors, a chase boat supports the race committee by setting inflatable marks, moving the inflatable marks with changing wind conditions, and relaying information on the race course. More im-portantly, a chase boat provides a level of safety and is an impor-tant backup in an emergency situation. I have known sailors to fall overboard while racing. I have been injured while competing in a race and have seen accidents happen. A club chase boat is a smart investment in our racing program.

A club member has generously donated a 20’ Sea Craft Center Console hull. The boat requires a new outboard – Evinrude E-Tec

130/150 hp, new electronics, trailer and miscellaneous small items. The board has approved and fronted $15,000 towards a chase boat, and I

am estimating that the final cost will be about $20,000. Now I am coming to the membership and asking for monetary

donations and volunteers. If you would like to make a monetary donation, make your check payable to Kelly McMartin; the mon-ies collected need to be kept in a separate account from the club

finances. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to work on it, please contact me. [See contact and boat info on page 10.] Let’s work together to improve our racing program.

Speaking of racing, please join us for the 27th Annual Tom Collier Regatta on Saturday, July 14th. It’s a fun day on the water and at the club raising money for cancer research. At the end of July we will be co-hosting the 46th Annual SBYC to KHYC Race. It’s one of our signature races, and we are looking forward to a great turnout of sailors and boats. Get your reservations in early for our famous Shrimp Feed.

While I am your Commodore, I am also a very busy, excited and proud Father of the Bride. On July 7th my beautiful daughter Cailin is getting married at the club to her wonderful fiancé, Dylan Colbert. We are looking forward to a blessed ceremony and a joy-ful celebration. There must be a lot of dust or pollen in the air these days—my eyes keep watering….

See you around the club.

Catching up from my missed article last month, we had the Ken Hoover Memorial regatta for our Opti sailors in May; there were over 50 entries and the weather cooperated for two full days of racing.

Thanks to Social Chair Kathy Davidson, we had a fun Kentucky Derby party and we have enjoyed first Friday music nights—attendance has been great. The Mothers Day brunch and Fathers Day BBQ were also well attended. The Fourth of July fireworks from the pier are on Sunday, July 1st this year (very strange!) with the associated BBQ at KHYC, and we’re having another celebration on Wednesday, July 4th. [See page 3 for details.]

The Twilight races are well underway, and we are experiencing excellent turnouts. As men-

tioned in previous articles about safety, we still proceed with caution and Race Chair Dorian Harris monitors the weather to ensure a safe race. Handicap racing continues and now the Dinghy Twilights have started, too, so come on down and join in the fun. If you don’t like to race, you can relax and watch the action from the club.

Finally, Membership Chair Kathy Frank continues to keep busy handling our new mem-ber interviews, and we are adding new members almost every month.

So, let’s keep tight lines and sail/power forward.

Wow – I’m halfway through my year as Rear Commodore already. The Opening Day season (a.k.a. the ‘deviled egg and cheap champagne tour’) is over, and it’s time for boating. Our last two Opening Days were at Dana Point and Dana West Yacht Clubs; both clubs fed us a healthy lunch, so we were stuffed by the time we left. Actually, it is fun meeting lots of people from other clubs. As Rear Com-modore, this is a great opportunity to meet offi-cers from other clubs with whom I can network.

If you have been out on the patio recently you’ll notice that we have replaced the six old tiny tables that you were lucky to squeeze four people around (as long as they didn’t have any-thing larger than a can of beer) with 48” glass-top tables that can easily accommodate six. We have doubled our seating capacity—we now have seating for 60 on the lower patio. The new

director’s chairs also look great. Thanks to House Chair Rosie Vullo for taking care of both of those projects.

This last month has been interesting. Our (Rainey’s and my) plans are always to take a trip to Catalina on Memorial Day Weekend. Rainey ended up having knee surgery the week before Memorial Day, so those plans quickly went by the wayside. We are definitely headed over for the 4th of July but are also looking forward to watching fireworks from the club on the 1st.

Please remember as you come in and out of the club to keep gates secured. In the summer months there is a lot more non-member traffic in our area, and having non-members wandering around the club is an issue. We also welcomed lots of new members over the last year; so if you see someone you don’t recognize, introduce yourself. Please remember to wear your nametag as well.

By the time you read this, the front door should be properly replaced (I sure hope I never have to write that again...).

June 9th was a beautiful eve-ning on the Palos Verdes Penin-sula. A light breeze was blowing, and the sounds of Frank Sinatra and Mama Mía wafted through the air. Cries of Mangia! Mangia! could be heard from the backyard of Rosie and Joe Vullo’s home as the partygoers waited eagerly for the pizza, straight out of the oven...and the Chi-anti, straight out of the bottle. Right from the start everyone knew it was going to be a night to remember, and they were right!

Sixty Powerboat Fleet members enjoyed one of the best parties of the year in the Vullos’ backyard. Guest Chef Eric Wood (photo), along with Joe Vullo and Marty Falk, made the best and most interesting pizzas for appetizers to go with the Champagne. Rosie and Joe made Rosie’s grand-mother’s lasagna which, along with Teri’s beautiful salad, accompanied the wine. And the Tiramisu, with just a sip of Tuaca, was the perfect ending to a lovely evening. Many thanks to all of those who helped make the evening so wonderful: the Davidsons, Falks, Sherks, Vullos and, of course, Chef Wood.

On the 22nd of this month, the Fleet will be cruising up the coast to Del Rey Yacht Club for brunch. In September, we will be cruising down the coast to Long Beach Yacht Club for a relax-ing weekend away from home.

For more information or to join the Fleet, please contact one of the PBF co-captains: Dyan Beven [email protected] or Teri Sherk [email protected].

The Night Watch/Cal 20 combo group gathered in June for the pre-meeting(s) pot luck dinner. The food line snaked a looong way back (photo), but our good-natured group kept everything upbeat—not a single “hangry” outburst among ‘em! Go team!

Skipper Denise Thorn thought that “Puns” would be a good opener for our meeting, so many of us came armed with some really bad ones. Well, if you’ve ever seriously groaned on a full stomach, you will know what kind of pain this caused...but we managed to move beyond the pain and have an enjoyable meeting.

Some space might be available in already-reserved rooms for the Isthmus Banning House October 19-21. Let Denise know if you would like to find a spot for this ladies’ weekend.

A week after our meet-ing, we all met up at the Comedy & Magic Club to raise money for the Tom Collier Memorial/Cedar Sinai Cancer Research Lab. Julie Moore took on this project again, and she did a fantastic job! The pho-tographer, however, ne-glected to get a pic of Julie, so we are reusing her photo from last time (she hasn’t aged a bit, anyway!) Thank you, Julie—it was a very fun event! All photos below were taken at this year’s event, although they are only a sampling of the many KHYC members who attended—$1800 worth! Nice!

The NWF women will be out in force in July helping with the Collier Regatta, SB to KH Race, etc. Note that there is NO NWF meeting in July—we meet again August 7th. Please feel free join us then!

This year’s Tom Collier Memorial Regatta for Hope Cure Cancer Cup is Saturday, July 14th, and I would like to invite you to join us. It’s hard to believe we have been running this regatta for 27 years! It started as an idea by a club member at the bar during Tom’s Memorial at KHYC to honor Tom’s memory with a sailboat race. Here we are now 27 years later—we have do-nated over $650,000 to cancer research. This is an impressive amount for a club our size, but it’s not time to give up this fight! All of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another. We have watched family and friends battle this disease and, sadly, we have lost too many to cancer. All the proceeds from this re-gatta go to fund specialized researchers at the KHYC Tom Col-lier Memorial Cancer Research Lab at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

This year’s committee has been working hard to put together a fun regatta. We are going back to the “old” Tom Collier race course with the sailboat racing viewable from the upper deck of the clubhouse. Again this year we will have both a racing and a cruising course. For those who are not on the water, join us at the club for an enjoyable afternoon.

Back by popular demand is the Rum Tasting and the Off-shore Band. The tacos and bräts will be served upstairs in the conference room. The opportunity drawing is for a two-night stay at the Miramonte Indian Wells Resort and Spa, plus a gift certifi-cate for the Vue Grill and Bar. Some of the live auction items include two watches donated by Maurice Lacroix and valued at $800-$1000; a USC Football game package; a Rams Football game package; and an Embassy Suites Gift Certificate valued at $600. We also have a wonderful assortment of items in our silent auction. Come down, join the fun and help us continue the fight!

I would like to thank the Night Watch Fleet for hosting the Comedy & Magic Club Fundraiser and all of the club mem-bers who joined us. We had a wonderful evening listening to some very funny comedians and raised $1800, which goes di-rectly to the Tom Collier Memorial Regatta for Hope Cure Can-cer Cup. Thank you!! Tracey McMartin

PHRF-A: 1st Jeffery Coyle/DISTRAXION 2nd Glen Griley/TKO

PHRF-B: 1st J.Sarner & M.Poiesz/KATIN

Congratulations to Skippers & Crews!

RADIO CONTROLLED SAILING

RC Sailing Anyone? Do we have enough interest in restarting the Friday evening radio controlled rac-ing off of the guest dock? Apparently it used to be done on Fridays, so let’s see if the last Friday of each month (5:30pm?) works for most during the regular summer sailing season.

The most common sailboat class seems to be the 1 meter class, but there are others. There may be plenty of used ones available from club members. Example link for a new boat: https://www.amazon.com/Kyosho-Seawind-1-Meter-Racing-Vehicle/dp/B013JTLCVY

Please send me an email if you are interested or if you have a used RC sail boat that you want to donate for a club ‘training boat’, and I'll help coordi-nate getting something started. Thanks.

RADIO FLEET Brian Johnson

Radio Fleet members Norm Thorn and Brian Johnson volunteered to work with stu-dents from Compton Junior College to launch and recover a High Altitude Balloon (HAB). The students put together a scientific payload with sensors for measuring temperature, pres-sure, acceleration, humidity, light intensity and cosmic rays. There were also three video cameras pointing up, down, & sideways, and we got some great pictures from the “edge of space.”

At 12:30PM on June 6th the balloon was launched from Compton College. The computer simulations pre-dicted a burst altitude of 120,000 feet, a flight time of 3 hours and 20 minutes, and landing somewhere near Victorville.

The tracking payload (developed by members of the KHYC Radio Fleet) con-tained an Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) transceiver. The APRS unit receives GPS signals and transmits the exact position

and altitude of the balloon using amateur radio. Using that signal, we were able to determine that landing oc-curred at about 4PM 13 km north of Victorville, about 15 km down-range (northeast) from the predicted location. Norm and Brian, with the help of San Bernardino Search & Rescue, finally

recovered the payload later that evening. The scientific data that was collected is still being reviewed by the stu-dents. The full story will be presented at the next Radio fleet meeting. The Radio Fleet meets the first Monday of every month at 6:30 on the lower deck. Guests are always welcome.

CAL 20 FLEET

8 | The Telltale

The Cal 20 fleet has started the summer BBQ season off with a great get-together. Sixteen fleet members showed up for our first summer BBQ—lots of great food and conversation. If you want to join the fun, we can find a Cal 20 in your size.

Just a short follow-up to last month’s article. As you may remember, the fleet went out and brewed the secret brew for the Thursday Twilight Race trophies; the plan was to award the beer for the Cal 20s that placed well for each race. Well, we had a slight mishap in that one of the bottles exploded. Nobody was hurt, but there was quite a mess. We have returned the beer to the brewery, and they determined that the beer was not done ferment-ing when we did the bottling, which over-pressured the bottles. We’ll try again sometime….

FIRST MATES

The First Mates met up in June for a delicious luncheon and a fun meeting. A number of First Mates attended the Comedy & Magic Club fundraiser for the Tom Collier Memorial Lab in June. You will also see us helping out with the Collier Regatta this month—such a fun and worthwhile event...party, really!

Silvia Taylor is now accepting donations of nice (new and gently used) items for resale at the “Treasure Trove” fundraiser in September. We are looking for antiques & collectibles; elec-tronics; kitchenware; lighting; linens; jewelry; fashion accesso-ries; nautical books & maps; KHYC logo items; and anything else that is a worthy purchase by someone else. Your donations can be dropped off at our August 1st or September meeting. There will be NO regular monthly meeting in July.

We are heading to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library by bus on Wednesday, July 11th. Contact Barb DeCuir if you want to come with us, although time is of the essence on this one!

KING HARBOR YOUTH FOUNDATION Gail Keswater Coach Info by Abby Featherstone

Our largest fundraiser of the year, the Fritz Dawson Sail-A-Thon 2018 was a huge success! With your help, support, and net-working outreach, we were able to exceed our goal of $25,000! This year’s total was the largest one yet. Thank you for stepping up to help us with this fundraiser. And THANK YOU to our “golden donor” who generously provided matching funds for many of our donations to help put us over our goal.

Reese Lieser took first place in the Opti Green Fleet at the Memorial Day Regatta at ABYC. Way to go Reese!

July is a big month of racing for our sailors. We’ll have com-petitors in Laser North Americans at ABYC, Junior Olympics at MBYC, and FJ Nationals at CYC. We’ll even be sending up sail-ors to the High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake.

Summer sailing is in full swing. Come down to the club for lunch and watch the young sailors learn, sail, and have fun. Re-view the bios/résumés on this page to learn more about our great coaches!

Save the date for our fall fundraiser, Oktoberfest, on Satur-day October 6th!

Emi Stephanoff California Maritime Academy Sophomore – Marine Transportation This is Emi’s second summer working with KHYF. She started sailing in the summer program when she was 7 years old and then graduated to FJs and 420s, competing for the Redondo Union High School Sailing Team. Emi now goes to school at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, CA where she is working toward her Coast Guard Third Mate Unlimited License in the Marine Trans-portation program. Currently, Emi is compet-ing all around the country on the CMA off-shore and dinghy sailing teams. At school she mainly sails Farr 40s, FJs, and J22s. Emi said, “I am looking forward to another awe-some summer with KHYF!”

Chris Andrews Santa Monica City College Sophomore Chris is joining our coaching staff for his fourth summer. He began sailing here at King Harbor as a freshman in high school and graduated last year from our junior sailing team as an avid FJ sailor who has competed in the local Shadden and PCISA circuits for most of his high school career. He is currently working on transferring to USC as a film production and computer science major. Fun fact: Chris can sometimes be seen with his camera since he is an experienced pho-tographer and videographer, and he has produced many great photos and videos for our program.

Alex Krouse University of Arizona Sophomore Alex has been sailing for six years. He has years of racing dinghies like Lasers, FJs, and Optis, as well as many bigger boats such as Cal 20s, J33s, and Martin 242s. Alex has been coaching at the King Harbor Youth Foundation for three years with kids of all ages. He is an active volunteer with the Yacht Club and Youth Foundation. Alex recently completed his freshman year of college at the University of Arizona and is excited to con-tinue his education along with teaching sail-ing. Alex explains, “I am very happy to be spending another year teaching new sailors this summer and giving back to the program that gave so much to me.”

Peter Neal Roger Williams University Junior - Mechanical Engineering Just finishing his second year of college, Peter has sailed as one of the top skippers on his team and he even received the Rookie of the Year Award at Roger Williams University. His sailing began here at King Harbor when he was old enough to join the Sabot team and compete against kids all over SoCal. Peter moved up into the Laser class where he worked his way to joining the top competi-tors. He qualified two years in a row for the US Youth Championships, a résumé-based qualifier that consists of the top junior sailors in the country.

Sean “Shark” Tallman Eckerd College – Marine Science Freshman Shark’s sailing started when he was just 3 months old when his parents brought him to Catalina on the family’s Catalina 32. When he was old enough, he joined the Opti team and began racing competitively at regattas around the country. For the last four years, Shark has been racing on the FJ Team where he repre-sents not only KHYC, but South High School/Torrance. Shark helped his team qualify for PCC’s the past two years, and this year the team was ranked 9th out of all the teams in California and Hawaii.

Jasmine Christensen Harbor Community College Freshman Jasmine began her sailing at age 8 when her parents signed her up for summer camp at CBYC. When she was old enough, she joined our King Harbor FJ Team where she repre-sented her school, Redondo Union, as a competitive crew member who helped her team qualify for Pacific Coast Championships two years in a row. Jasmine will be joining our coaching staff this summer for her first year and will be spending time with our youngest group of sailors in Opti 1.

Cailin McMartin Cal State University, Long Beach Senior Cailin has been sailing since she was 6 years old but has been on boats since she was born. Cailin grew up racing sabots as a member of the KHYF sailing team competing in multiple nationals and regattas. This summer will be Cailin’s sixth summer coaching with us. Fun Fact: Cailin followed close in her father’s footsteps as a competitive racer and is the third person to become a KHYC third-generation member.

Drea Keswater Rolling Hills Preparatory - Senior His second year on the KHYF coaching staff, Drea has an extensive sailing résumé, pri-marily developed in King Harbor. Drea loved sailing from the start and wanted to move into racing. He joined the team as an Opti sailor and then moved up into FJs and Lasers, which he still competes in regularly. Drea led his high school team to a Pacific Coast Championship win up in San Francisco this year. He has spent countless hours bettering himself and doesn’t miss an opportunity to get out on the water. Drea’s hard work paid off when he was awarded Most Valuable Player Award from the Rolling Hills Prep Sailing Team this past season. He will com-pete in the Laser North American Champion-ships at ABYC in Long Beach in July.

Luke Pond South High School/Torrance Junior Luke is a true waterman and has grown up sailing and surfing here in the Southbay for most of his life. This year, Luke was accepted into the Junior Lifeguard Cadet Program and will be spending his summer teaching sailing and working with the junior lifeguards. Currently, Luke is a member of our FJ Team and represents his school, South High. He helped his team qualify for PCC’s the past two years, and this year the team was ranked 9th out of all the teams in California and Hawaii. Fun Fact: When Luke was younger he and his family spent a year sailing their boat Qualchan up and down the West Coast of California and into Mexico.

WATERFRONT EDUCATION In May the Waterfront Edu-cation team participated in the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Solar Cup race. The teams competed against each other in both sprint and endurance races at Lake Skinner in Temecula.

The race is the culmination of an eight-month program in which high school teams learn about water conservation and re-newable energy Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) by building and racing solar-powered boats that they assembled from the ground up.

The team consisted of students from Dorsey, Redondo, Haw-thorne, and Middle College High Schools, as well as several adult mentors. Among those were KHYC’s own Julie Coll and Brian Johnson.

During the solar boat chal-lenge, we stumbled Friday during the prequalification race and we barely qualified. We fell on Satur-day when our motor burned up. But on Sunday, with the help of a borrowed electric motor from Del Lago Academy’s team, we got back up and finished 1st in the sprint race for rookie teams!

We were sponsored by the West Basin Water District, the King Harbor Youth Foundation, and the Louis Berger Charitable Foundation.
