From the Pastor’s Pen . . .

What’s so important abut worship that we should be there week after week? The important thing is not the music, not the style, not even the people or the preaching. The important thing is that God is there, waiting to meet us and greet us with a good word of grace and forgiveness. And don’t we need that for our harried and hurried lives?

In Sunday worship during July, God speaks some familiar good words. It is easy to miss them because we assume we know what it’s all about. But we don’t really. There is something that God says that applies to us now, in our daily walk, in our daily challenges, in the hot, humid days of summer.

July 7. Good news! The kingdom of God has come near to you. What will that mean as you live among people who need him to be close?

July 14. Jesus, like the neighborly good Samaritan, picks us up where we fall, carries us to safety, washes our wounds, and arranges for our long-term care. It’s not “who is my neighbor,” but “who can I be neighbor to?”

July 21. Jesus came to visit Mary and Martha, just as he comes to visit your home. Will you give him time to speak to you? Or will you be so preoccupied with many things that you ignore him and complain about others?

July 28. Jesus teaches us to pray and promises to hear us. Through him you have a direct line to your heavenly Father.

Vicar Alex’s last sermon and last Sunday with us is July 28, before he goes back to seminary to finish his training for the pastorate. We have been blessed by his faith and his faithful work here.

O come, let us bow down and worship the Lord, for he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. (Psalm 95:6-7)

Pastor Paul Nelson

Pastor Nelson’s Retirement Dear members of Concordia, I have decided to retire (again), and therefore I gave the Elders

notice of my resignation as your Part-time Vacancy Pastor, as of September 2, 2019. It has been an honor to have your trust and confidence for the past two years. It has been a challenging opportunity to serve the Lord by serving Concordia during this time. By Sept. 2, I will have turned 79 years old. I am aware that my energy has waned. To continue to serve the needs of Concordia is requiring more of me than I can muster. Thus, I am also aware

Page 3: July 2019 - Concordia Christian66).pdf · Mrs. Leslie Brown Pastor Craig Schultz Mrs. Betsy Murray ... July is the last month that Ashlie, Alexander and I will be at Concordia

2

that it is difficult for me to do all that needs to be done. From now until September 2, I will continue to do my best to help prepare the congregation and staff for the transition to a new Senior Pastor, as well as continue the work of pastor in this place. I am grateful for the many gracious Christians at Concordia, along with a very good, dedicated and hard-working staff, who continue to be most supportive and appreciative of my efforts. But I sense that it is time to say farewell to the work here as of Sept. 2 (or sooner, if a Senior Pastor is installed before then). Thank you for your prayers, encouragement and the opportunity to serve the Lord in these ways at this time in my life. May Christ, the Lord of the Church, continue to give blessings, guidance and grace to you, Concordia Lutheran Church.

Pastor Nelson

From the Vicar Farewell…

July is the last month that Ashlie, Alexander and I will be at Concordia.

We could not have asked for a better congregation, and I could not have

asked for a better vicarage. I have honed my preaching and teaching

skills, learned how to make visits, and continued to grow in my ability to

relate to different people. Each of these skills is important for ministry,

and Concordia has done a lot to further me in every area of pastoral

ministry. Thank you.

Beyond the patience necessary to train a vicar, Concordia has gone out of

its way to welcome my family. I sense that all of you have adopted

Alexander as a son of the congregation and welcomed Ashlie with open

arms. You became our extended family when our close family was far

away. Concordia has given us a sense of what it means to welcome a

stranger with Christ’s love. What a blessing. As I leave Concordia, I pray

that God would continue to bless this church, that he would dwell here

richly by his Word and Spirit, and that Ashlie and I would be fortunate

enough to come and see this place again.

Farewell to Vicar Alex, Ashlie and Alexander

Concordia has certainly been blessed and has benefitted greatly through having Vicar Alex, Ashlie and Alexander as a part of our congregation this past year. In July we take time to appreciate them, and celebrate their ministry among us. As much as possible you may wish to participate in these “final events” of Vicar Alex’s ministry among us. Saturday, July 27th- Farewell Spaghetti Dinner and Ice Cream Social 5:30pm-Concordia Family Life Center Menu-Spaghetti, Salad, Bread, Drinks, Ice Cream Sundaes Sunday, July 28th – Vicar Alex gives his final sermon as Vicar of Concordia. We wish Alex, Ashlie and Alexander God’s richest blessings in Christ Jesus, as they return to St. Louis where Alex will complete his final year of studies. We anticipate the time when he will receive his first congregation assignment.

Children’s Ministry News Belinda Bost, Children’s Minister

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 3 from 3-6:00 pm for our Summer Family Fun Quench! We will gather in the horse shoe and celebrate the Dog Days of Summer with a water slide, kiddie pools, water sprinklers, beach music, games, homemade ice cream, Concordia’s world’s famous hotdogs and more. Come and re connect with your Concordia family and make new friends with families of our community. Watch for more information. “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” John 7:37 (NIV)

Beginning August 25th the wee little ones (infants and toddlers) along with their parents will have their very own monthly gathering in the nursery on the 4th Sunday during the 11:00 Sunday school hour. Parents and their children will participate in praise songs, finger poems, prayer and scripture sign language.

Kids in Worship. Look for the Kids in Worship post each week in the highlights. Here you will find a Worship Word that ties in with the Gospel Lesson and can serve as a help for family devotions for the week. In addition, Kids in Worship bulletins are created to go along with the Worship Word for the week. Ask a greeter or an usher for a bulletin. Crayons and colored pencils can be found at the Welcome Stations.

Did you know that the worship service can be heard in the Narthex? Feel free to take your wiggly worshiper there to stretch their legs for a bit. Walkers want to walk and talkers want to talk. It can be challenging to worship with children between the ages of 1 and 3. Consider the Narthex as an option for short “time outs”. TAKE NOTE that Adult Bible Study, Youth and Children’s Sunday school will not meet during the month of July.

Colbie Dwiggins Colbie Dwiggins has a story to tell the world, and it’s all about perseverance, never

giving up, overcoming challenges, and walking in faith with Christ. I recall the moment

when he was about 7. It was night time, and we were reading before bed. I’d read a

page, and he’d read a page. Then I noticed, he kept saying the words “was,” as “saw,”

and “saw”, as “was.” Weeks later after testing, I heard these words, “Colbie has a

significant case of dyslexia.” At that moment and in a matter of seconds, my mind hit

fast forward, and it played out every worst case scenario for his life you could

imagine. Since then, I have witnessed this kid from age 8, “man up.” That’s the term his

2nd grade teacher instilled in him early on. I’ve watched this kid during moments of

struggle, never cease to give up. I’ve watched him accept the reality of having dyslexia,

own it, actually embrace it, all while refusing to let it become his identity. One day he

told me, “I’m thankful God created me this way, if it were not for dyslexia, I’d not have

the drive to achieve what I have today.” Wow! I’ve watched him grow academically,

and exceed every goal he has set out for himself, through hard work, diligent studying,

having the courage to ask for help, and through pure dedication to personal growth. He

has developed into a leader in every sense of the word. The kid who never gave up. The

kid that embraced/loved the people who believed in him. The kid that became focused

with proving those wrong that didn’t. That kid, he’s gonna graduate from NCHS magna

cum laude, with National honors, beta club, Shamir Grier Scholarship recipient, Rowe-

Warlick Memorial Scholarship recipient, and student of the year 4 out of 7 years since

6th grade. Thank you son, for blessing my life with your kindness, your determination,

your love of Christ, and the life he has given you.

If you have a child that’s struggling with a learning disability, let this kid be a beacon of

hope for you…that with hard work, and the right attitude, achieving academic success

is completely attainable.

Caleb Michael Henze Caleb is a young man of God who stands up for others, respects people, forgives

quickly, thinks outside-the-box and honors his family and friends. He is graduating

NCHS Summa Cum Laude with National Honor Society, Beta Club, Advanced Visual

Design Art Award, Strength and Fitness Award, 2nd place in State for HOSA, Tri-M

Music Honor Society, earning his Eagle Scout, and is an Honor Graduate. He was a

delegate to NC Boy’s State, Percussionists in Band, CVCC Career & College Promise

Scholar and received the Fielding Clark Memorial Scholarship. Caleb is a (10 time

earning) 6-sport letterman in Cross-Country (regional competitor), Swimming (state

competitor), Wrestling (regional competitor), Tennis, Cheerleading (All-American) and

Track and Field (state competitor). He plans to pursue an education that involves

automotive engineering followed by flying Helicopters and engineering/repairing their

respective engines.

Concordia’s LWML stays engaged. Our involvements are diverse and far-

reaching …and there’s always something new on the horizon. For more details

or to get involved, inquire at the church office or of a “Lutheran Woman in

Mission.”

LWML sale items include some seasonal favorites

like barbecue seasonings, cool citrus-y emulsions, and an awesome tomato

knife. Proceeds benefit local and parish projects (distinct from Mites, which

benefit national and district projects).

10 YEARS OF GOD’S BLESSINGS

God continues to bless University Christian High School as we celebrate our

10th Anniversary. It is hard to believe that just 10 years ago UCHS began with

eight students in the Youth Center at Concordia Christian Day School. Those

students are now in graduate school or working in a career. Our partnership

with LRU has allowed each students to take over 30 hours of college credits on

a college campus while still in high school. When we needed a place to have

classes, St. Andrew’s opened their doors to us. When we needed even more

space, we were able to build our new building right on LRU’s campus. We have

seen enrollment increases for 9 of the past 10 years, and we ended this year

with 134 students.

We offer a unique individualized academic program that combines Honors Level

classes, with AP classes, and LRU College Classes. We have an outstanding

faculty that is all returning for this school year. Our AP test scores average 4.15

with the national average of 2.86. Our students volunteer over 4,000 service

hours each year and they love it at UCHS. God has blessed us for these past

10 years and we pray that He will continue to bless us in the future. Thank you

for your support.

COLOR RUN

On Saturday, August 10, UCHS will host the 2nd annual Color Me Sally Run. This

year, the run will begin and end at the UCHS campus with color stations positioned

along the course. This 5K color run & walk promises to be a lot of fun! There will also

be a celebration after the race with music, food, and fun for all ages! Proceeds from the

race will go toward the school’s new Sign Fund and the Sally Sowers Scholarship Fund.

To participate, register at runtimeraces.com http://runtimeraces.com/colormesallyrun.

Unable to participate? You can sign-up to be a Phantom Runner and support UCHS!

The Color Me SALLY Run celebrates the life of Sally Sowers, and represents Sally’s

colorful and vivacious spirit! More about Sally can be found on the runtimeraces.com
