TRANSCRIPT
July 2019 Vol 9, No 7
On Pentecost Sunday, friends of all ages gathered in the fellowship hall to sing, learn, and
create Pentecost art. Our holiday celebrations are one of my favorite things about serving this congregation. We always have creative celebrations of Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, and other special days in the church.
Soon, you will see one of our Pentecost creations in the back of the sanctuary (an area commonly called the narthex.) Adults, children and youth worked together to create a tree with leaves symbolizing the many gifts the Holy Spirit gives us. A big thank you to the Christian Education Committee for putting these crafts and the event together!
We hope to display other art in the narthex as time goes by. An Advent/Christmas themed piece is in the works!
When you see this piece in the narthex, pause to think of the many gifts God's Spirit have given to you individually and to us as a congregation. And give thanks.
In Christ, Kerri

Director of Christian Education Mary Todd Peters
Dear NH Friends,
I just started reading a new book titled
“The Pilgrim’s Compass: Finding and Following the God We Seek” by Paul H. Lang. If you had asked me what a pil-grimage is before I read this book, I would have told you that it is a long trip
to a sacred sight that helps bring one insight into their
faith journey. I have never been on such a pilgrimage, but I would like to go on one at some point. In his book, Paul Lang defines a pilgrimage as two things—"the travel to a distant location for religious purposes and two, as a meta-phor for discipleship throughout one’s life.” I really like this second definition of Pilgrimage as I do believe that
our faith is something that takes a lifetime to develop.
Summer is typically seen as a time of slowing down in the church. People are not at church as much because they are traveling, entertaining family or perhaps taking the sum-mer off from attending Sunday school and worship. I would like to suggest a reframing of summer as a part of
our faith journey to slow down and spend time enjoying ourselves, a slower pace and perhaps not so much activity. As you enjoy your summer it is my hope that you will fo-cus on your pilgrimage of discipleship by being aware of God’s presence in the ordinary everyday of your lives.
There are a few spiritual practices in this newsletter that
might help you focus on your faith journey and spend time
noticing more about where God is and how you experi-
ence God in your day to day. One practice is to begin each
day by centering yourself in the knowledge that God is
with you. It can be as simple as a short prayer thanking
God for being present, or by saying a Bible verse out loud
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be
glad in it!” (Psalm 118 v24)
Another spiritual practice is in the evening to think back
through your day and ask yourself “Where did I see God’s
presence in my day?” Or ask yourself “When did I feel love?
When did I give love? When did I feel the absence of love?”
Whether you travel or stay at home, I hope you will take time to incorporate spiritual practices into your daily rou-tine. Intentionality and commitment to these practices will
enrich your life. God will surprise you as you discover God’s presence in the everyday.
This prayer is one that Paul wrote for folks who are on a pilgrimage to use. He writes “This prayer…can serve as a resource in our atlas to provide a brief and memorable distillation of the hopes of pilgrimage. Notice the repeated
petition, “Lead me, Lord,” which is found only in Psalms. There is no more central and unifying petition in the heart and mind of a pilgrim than that the journey be led by the calling of God.”
A Pilgrim’s Prayer by Paul H. Lang
Lead me, Lord, gently, pervasively, irresistibly, increasingly,
So that I walk my pilgrim way steadily, and find the place
Of my resurrection.
Lead me, Lord, so that I neither dally nor disobey, nor
turn aside,
Nor stand still, nor stumble, nor turn back in loyalty to
old gods
Who will not bless me.
Lead me, Lord, as a felt Presence,
As a constant companion, as a counselor in perplexity,
As my first, fast, last friend.
Lead me, Lord, by grace to gratitude,
By gratitude to generosity of spirit,
By generosity to mercy, that I may cultivate
A compassionate heart.
Lead me, Lord, through your loving embrace,
So that I do not forget or fall away,
But remain steadfast and loyal,
Joyful and true on my journey with you. Amen

Director of Music Allen Amos
As a full time music educator and part time
church musician, my days are often busy
from morning until night. Like most
people, finding time to get everything done
in a day is hard to do. It's even harder to fit
in time for relaxation/meditation/self-
renewal. The summer months slow down
for most people because the rigor of the
academic year eases off. I always look forward to these
summer days, as it allows me freedom to take my time
accomplishing tasks, and I am able to do some fun things
that I don't get to do otherwise. I am excited to catch up on
some pleasure reading this summer. One book, in
particular, was given to me about a year ago entitled
“A Song to Sing, A Life to Live - Reflections on Music
as Spiritual Practice” by Don Saliers and Emily
Saliers. Don is a church organist, and Emily is a member
of the alternative folk-rock group, “The Indigo Girls”.
This book will explore the connections between “Saturday
night” music (secular) and Sunday morning music (sacred)
through the spiritual dimensions of music itself. The
authors will help the reader appreciate the joy of music and
explore how music carries us into the places of sorrow,
where we must go if we are to live with honesty about
ourselves and compassion for others.
My hope is that through reading books like this and other
works, that I will gain new ideas and perspectives on the
music that I make at school and here at New Hope. I pray
that your summer months will allow you time to rest,
recharge, and slow down for a few moments to enjoy all of
our blessings.

Summertime also brings our farmworker camp mission back into full gear! Mission Committee would like to express a big THANK YOU to everyone who has dropped off donations for Camp 421 — people have been very generous! The grey
collection bin is in the narthex near the elevator. We are also happy to receive monetary donations. Just make the check to New Hope Presbyterian and note “Migrant Workers” on the memo line.
Collection of these items for the men continues (full-sized for all toiletries if possible):
Men’s pants in lightweight material Long-sleeved lightweight men’s shirts Shampoo Body wash Toothpaste & toothbrushes Shaving cream Deodorant Bug repellent
A trip to Newton Grove to give the men all your helpful donations is still in the planning stages — stay tuned. Everyone is welcome to come along!

Pansy’s Corner
Let the Adventure Begin! We are so excited about our summer camp season! This year we are offering 4 weekly themed overnight camps: The Amazing Race, Forged by
Fire, We are Family, and Night Owl
camp. We are also redesigning our Middle School Day Camp schedule. There are lots of exciting new programs – do not delay and register today! Pool passes are available and
can be purchased online.
Why is Camp so important?
Social workers believe that summer programs for children can provide many benefits, yet equal access is often a challenge. Child and Family Social Workers, who often work with families and children in multicultural urban communities, can help increase access to quality summer programs for children who can benefit most from them.
We are always in need of scholarship money. There are so many children who are unable to come to camp but would truly benefit from the wonderful experience at New Hope Camp.
For all additional information go to our website www.newhopeccc.org or contact the office at 919-942-4716,
Save the Date!
Homecoming 2019 Everyone is welcome to join us in celebrating Homecoming on August 25.
Our speaker will be Joel Winchip, Executive Director of the Presbyterian Camp and Conference Center Association. We are celebrating 70 years of camping ministry at New Hope!
Enjoy a special Chancel Choir and Handbell Choir repertoire coordinated by our music director Allen Amos. Following the Worship Service enjoy our usual delicious potluck lunch.

BSA Troop & Cub Pack 449
Cub Pack 449 meets
1st and 3rd (of the
month) on Tuesday
nights. The Cubs will
have the summer off
after the June 4th meeting. We’re
planning recruitment activity over
the summer with a kick-off recruit-
ment event in late August, pre-
Labor Day. Scouting, at all levels,
helps to equip young people with
skill-sets they can use throughout
life. Scouting is open to boys AND
girls. We currently do not have
female members, but welcome the
opportunity to serve. See below for
questions.
Troop 449 Scouts were at
Camp Raven Knob June
16 -22. Fun and fellow-
ship were enjoyed by all.
If you know young men from 1st
thru 5th grade, or ages 7-10, who’re
interested in what Cubs have to
offer, or ages 11-17 years of age
who may benefit from the fellow-
ship, training, and leadership skills
available in the Boy Scouting
Program, please check out our
websites: pack449.org and
troop449.org, or see Al Townsend
for more information.
2019 Montreat Women’s Connection Conference
August 9-11, 2019
NHPC Women come join us for a weekend of faith, fun and beauty in Montreat. Lisa Henniger has graciously offered her house in Montreat for our group to stay in. You must register as a commuter.
Registration fee is $237 before June 28. Mary Todd is on the planning team for this conference and is very excited about the keynoter Valarie Kaur and special guest Amy Grant. Go to https://
montreat.org/events/women to register. Let Lisa know you would like to stay in her house. There is space for 8 women.
And now these three remain:
faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. –
1 Corinthians 13:13
Women’s Connection 2019 will be a time to connect with old and new friends. It will be a time to care for yourself, a time for space and Sabbath. Our hope is you will experience spiritual nourishment, inspiration, and discernment. Our prayer is you will feel God’s
loving presence.
Collins’ Family Visit
