Thank you to Anthony Anderson for the project beside Zion’s main door. This Food Shelf is being used! Thank you to the people who continue to fill the shelves for those who need to benefit from the items contained on the shelves. Please remember that during these summer months items may heat

up and spoil quickly. Remember that as you bring items for the shelves.

This will be a wonderful ministry throughout the year.. And especially during this pandemic when so many more folk are

encouraged to remain home due to safety closures.

When I am in the office I have the privilege of seeing people add to and then to use items from the food shelf. Please know that there are many

very grateful folk who come regularly to collect items. I try to leave them with a verse or word of encouragement. I have told them that

those who fill the shelves pray for those who use the shelves. Thanks to all who continue in this wonderful ministry to those in need.

Prayers of Protection: Nathan Anthony, Mathew Sherwood, Nick Luoma, Nathan Madsen, Keely Nelson, Andrew Hutton, Andrew Mattson, Joshua Seifert, and Michael Kuecher for all those who are in military

service throughout the world. Mathew Sherwood has graduated from two-week training for Warrant & Officer Candidate. Congratulations to Matt! Keeley Nelson participated in a Non-Commissioned Officer Academy Graduation in March 2019. She earned the rank of E6 in the Air Force. Keeley is a nurse. She was stationed in South Korea for one year and is now in Alaska. She is looking forward to visiting Superior when pandemic regulations allow. Please let me know of an update for our Military men and women. Prayers for them on

Sundays is not enough. An address would be appreciated for Birthday/Christmas greetings. Several of our Military will be detained due to Corona Virus stipulations. Pray for them as they find terms extended and time will not allow them to visit family prior to next assignment. Thank you, Jan Arena

Tuesday Missions With great sadness I think it’s best to

cancel our group meetings until later into the summer. Watch for confirmation of this date. If you have questions, please chat with me and I may be able to help with supplies so you are able to sew from your home. We do have some cut mittens in the closet. Sew n’ Sews Several have been enjoying, for a time, our in home quarantine time. But, we miss the time of fellowship and coffee at the end of our work time—it is hard to wait for a time of gathering again. We do remain active in our own homes, but treasure the times when we have an immediate second opinion or voice of encouragement. Keep watching for that day to be announced. Jan Arena

Coronavirus. Guidelines and regulations change as quickly as the weather in the Northland.

Pastor continues to add encouraging words and information to the Web page. Please check that often. The first concern is to keep all of us safe and healthy.

Thanks to all who have used masks when in public places. And thanks to the many who have stepped up and made the masks for those who are in jobs that cannot be done from home. We watch the building and utility workers, maintenance and services, grocery and retail persons that we rely on to provide for our needs. Remember to thank them when

they place items into the trunk of your car. Also, next time you drive by the church, notice that both large crosses (front and back of church) are now freshly painted, gardens are pruned, weeded, and blooming, grass is neat and trimmed, and need I continue? Many hands are needed to help us all stay safe and still

maintain an inch of normalcy. Thanks to all of those folk.

PASTORS PAGE Mark 16:1-8

1When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.2And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.3They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?”4When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.6But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Naza-reth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him.7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.”8So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amaze-ment had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

We are afraid sometimes, aren’t we? God knows that we tend to live in fear. In our society we fear financial instability, illness, death… In most surveys, it seems as if Americans are more afraid of speaking in front of other people than anything else.

In other parts of the world, people live with the very real fear of starvation and others with the very real fear of the destruction of war.

Mostly we’re afraid of losing something.

When angels appear in the Biblical stories, there is a simple greeting nearly every time: “Don’t be afraid.” Even here, where the tomb stands empty, the young man dressed in a white robe said that they shouldn’t be alarmed before he reminds them that the empty tomb was a promise from Jesus. This is the way things are supposed to be.

But it is one thing to be told that there is no need to fear, and another thing altogether not to be afraid. And the women at the tomb were afraid anyway, because according to Mark’s tell-ing of the Easter story, the women didn’t say anything to anybody because of that fear.

That’s the way we are too. We don’t talk too much about what frightens us. We don’t act on what we believe because we’re afraid that we might be seen as gullible or stupid, or just missing the point of modern life which, in this society at least, seems to be about getting as much as you can as fast as you can.

But the truth is that we can boldly face that which we fear. We can face the empty tomb with-out a scrap of evidence that Jesus has been raised because we have faith. We can honor God’s call for us to serve in spite of what the world tells us is important because we have a risen God who is with us at all times. Even death no longer holds fear for us, as Paul wrote

in 1 Corinthians 15.

Fear is real. Financial insecurity is real. Illness, hunger, war, destruction – all real. The empty tomb and the risen Jesus? That’s real too, real enough to cling to when we are filled with fear.

Church Council Meeting Minutes May 21st, 2020

Council meeting was held online via Google Meet. Present were Pat Hovi, Anthony Anderson, Ken Mertz, Beth Arnson, Pastor Victor, Bob Warner, Christel Lewis, Aine Merrill, Donald Anderson, Tim Ingersoll and Donna Meltz. Meeting was called to order by President Bob Warner at 6:01. A motion was made by Pat and seconded by Tim to accept the April Council minutes. Motion carried. Treasurers Report: Budget is sitting well. In April, we have made deposits of $8,551. We must spend the loan money in 8 weeks for it to become a grant. The loan was for $17,299.17. We have spent $10,210.78 for a current balance of $7,088.39. That is enough to cover the next 2 pay periods. Pastor Report: He is contacting members through email and posting daily devotions. He is doing a lot of online meetings using Zoom. Discussed whether Zion should sign up for a Zoom account so the meetings can be longer than 40 minutes. The cost is $16 per month. Motion was made by Tim and seconded by Pat to get a Zoom account. Motion carried. Tim shared a message from a previous member that she was very appreciative of the online Sunday morning service and of Pastor. Pastor also mentioned that the janitor, Darren, is not getting many hours in now that the church is not used much. A motion was made by Tim and seconded by Aine to pay Darren based on the average hours he worked prior to February. Motion carried. A motion was made by Tim and seconded by Pat to accept all reports as given. Motion carried. The constitution committee has not met. Operations Report: $620 was deposited via Paypal for April. The lawn hasn’t been mowed yet. It was brought up that to help bees, there is a thing called No Mow May and we should wait until June 1st to mow. Pastor will call the Betterman’s or Paul Freer and have them contact Mel Mattson to start mowing June 1st. We discussed when to have services at church again. The thought was to wait until the experts say when it is OK to congregate again. A motion was made by Tim and seconded by Pat to have the council evaluate information from the CDC to determine when to have services again. Motion carried. Devotions were given by Aine. Pat will do the devotions for the June meeting. Beth wanted to know if the church was doing anything for graduates and what the status of scholar-ships was. Beth will contact Jan Arena or Pearl about the graduates to get them a quilt. Aine said there were several applications in the office for scholarships and that anyone who applied could get one. A motion was made at 6:50 by Tim and seconded by Pat to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried. Submitted by Christel Lewis

During these past several weeks we have virtually

lived virtually. The computer has been our hand-

shake to the outer world. Our schools are on-line and

so are our graduations. We do want to mention and

honor our graduates with a written word—even if it

is received electronically. To do that we need to know

who you are, where you graduated from, school

name, degree you received, and also we are interested

in your plans for the future. Please email the church

‘attention Pearl’. That may keep it from ending up in

spam or junk mail. I will do my best to list you in the

Graduations

By now everyone knows I work on putting together and typeing the Newsletter for

you. You also know that I usually read every morning from the scriptures and that I write down

what I call the ‘calendar verse for today’. Well, today’s verse is Psalm 10:12: Arise, Lord! Lift

up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.

I cannot resist a verse like that to say thank you to each one of you for giving me the

privilege to see those who come and go during my work hours. I am thrilled to see the faces of

those who do the work behind the scenes. Of those who fill the Food Shelf. For those doing

maintenance, fixing, gardening, grass cutting, cleaning, preparing items so others can work at

home, and even parking in the lot to lean against cars and chat with and encourage each other.

Thank you. You are truly THE CHURCH. May God continue to Bless you all. Pearl
