Recent Happenings: Pride Event on June 6th I think it’s really important to not just support our family members, friends, and neighbors but to listen to their stories and understand who they are. I believe that we each share certain responsibilities as members of social groups and so I thought it was important to share these with others. I have included and expanded upon them a bit here:
It is our responsibility to listen to others and to have respect for how THEY identify and express themselves. Identification and expression are two integral concepts to any understanding of gender.
It is our responsibility to ask questions and have conversations in a respectful manner about things that we don’t know or understand.
It is our responsibility to open our minds and our hearts to learn about who others are, not who we try to classify them to be.
By learning about things we don’t understand and/or may not be comfortable with, we can begin to address any prejudices that we may hold while also becoming more empathetic. Empathy then allows us to see the world through others’ views and gives us much needed perspective to really support all community members.
- Chris Bruell
Chris is a Temple Emanu-El member who serves on the Marblehead Selectmen’s Task Force Against Discrimination.
I wanted to speak at the Pride flag raising event because I wanted to share my point of view and educate other people. At first I was nervous to speak in front of such a large crowd but, once I got up there, I became more confident as I knew I had my friends and family there to support me. Especially now that the transgender bills have been passed, it is more important than ever to speak up for the LGBTQ+ community as everyone should feel comfortable being who they really are. I have friends who belong to this community and it’s very important to me to be an ally and support them.
