Having a chance to perform in front

of thousands of people can be a littledaunting but exciting, as two formerWheatland County residents found out.

Niki Cammaert-Flundra from Rocky-ford and Megan Konschuh from Strath-more both took part in the CalgaryStampede Grandstand show. Cammaert-Flundras part in the show was to per-form her trick riding act, and Konschuhwas there showing off her violin skills.

It was amazing, it was about as bigas it gets. There was huge crowds and itwas a huge show, it was awesome, saidCammaert-Flundra.

Cammaert-Flundra had performed hertrick riding show for eight years for theStampede when trick riding was still

part of the rodeo. She was called whenthe Stampede decided they wanted toadd a horse show to the grandstandperformance.

The grandstand show was reallyunique because its totally different fromwhat my horses and I are used to. Wetypically perform in arenas on dirt or when they work on the movies its agrass eld, like a natural surface for ahorse, said Cammaert-Flundra.

The stage was really slippery andhollow sounding and really different forthem. Then when you throw in all thepyro, and the lights, and the smokethere were just so many elements thatmade it totally different than what wereused to. It was just a really unique expe-

rience and we had to do a lot of think-ing outside the box to sort of make itall work.

She has been trick riding for 15 years. She used to see it at the Stampede everyyear and decided it was something shewanted to try. A family friend gave herlessons and away she went. This was Konschuhs rst time being

involved in the grandstand show, andshe has been playing violin since shewas four years old. She received a callfrom a friend of hers, who also playsviolin, one day asking if she wanted tobe a part of the grandstand show, andshe jumped at the offer.

Continued from Page 1We all love to perform, and I think

its pretty clear that most people onthe stage are very passionate aboutperforming and love what they do. Weall loved every second of it, said Kon-schuh.

I took a few years off of per forminga few years ago, so its great to be kindof getting back into it, and doing whatI love to do.

She took a break to go back toschool and get a degree in psychologyand womens studies. She wanted toexplore her options, and wasnt sure ifshe wanted to continue teaching vio-lin and performing. After being awayfrom it for a few years Konschuh re-alized she missed it, and decided tocome back to it, which has been work-ing out well for her. The show began every night after

the chuckwagons, lasted for about anhour and was followed by the re-works display.

It was just a combination of somany great things, there was the mu-sic, all the dancers, all the musiciansand then all of the acrobatic kind ofCirque du Soleil stuff going on, saidKonschuh.

Konschuh also had a chance to per-form for the Duke and Duchess ofCambridge, Will and Kate, when shetook part in the opening ceremonythat kicked off the parade.

It was pretty fantastic to have themso close, and (to) open for them.

Both women agreed they woulddenitely be a part of the show againnext year if invited back. Cammaert-Flundra said there have already beendiscussions about adding a horseshow next year to the grandstand tocommemorate 100 years of the stam-pede, and is hoping to have a chanceto be a part of it.

Prior to Budget 2011, the Harper Governmentprovided retrot incentives to over half a mil-lion Canadians. Homeowners who participatedin the program saved an average of 20 percenton their energy bills. The renewal of the ecoENERGY Retrot

Homes program was rst introduced in Budget2011 and was opposed by all opposition parties.

The opposition talk big about the environ-ment, but its our government that is standing upto provide the support necessary to our familiesto make their homes more energy efcient, saidSorenson.

    Parliamentary Report

In our riding, everyone felt honoured to wel-come the Royal Couple, Prince William and Cath-erine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ontheir rst ofcial tour of Canada. Canadians areproud of Canadas history and the founding insti-tutions that have helped make our country strongand free. The Royal Couples decision to make Canada

the destination for their rst ofcial tour is a tes-tament to Canadas standing in the world, and theclose ties between Canada and our Royal Family. It was a high compliment for these newly-wedsto want to visit Canada, and it was our honour towelcome them.

Thanks to the outpouring of mutual affectionbetween Canadians and the Royal Couple, con-nection to our founding institutions is strongerthan ever, and we move forward together morecondent and more optimistic for our shared fu-ture as proudly as we celebrate our shared history. The highlight of the Royal Tour for Western Ca-

nadians was when the Duke and Duchess joinedour Prime Minister and Mrs. Harper along withHis Excellency David Johnston, Governor Generalof Canada and his wife Sharon, to ofcially openthe Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth the Cal-gary Stampede. The Calgary Stampede is one of Canadas big-

gest tourist attractions as well as one of the largestregional cultural events; it celebrates a proud his-tory and tradition and showcases it for all Cana-dians to partake in and enjoy. The Calgary Stam-pede is not only a celebration of Canadas westernhistory, but it also showcases the music, art, cul-ture and people from all across Canada. As your Member of Parliament, my wife Dar-

lene and I were invited to the Stampede Bar-

beque hosted by Prime Minister Harper for theRoyal Couple. It was a privilege to meet the futureKing and his wife. It was a very brief encounter,as it was for most Canadians. Everywhere theywent massive crowds had been patiently waitingin anticipation of seeing the Royal Couple alongmotorcade and parade routes or at ceremonies. We all got to spend a moment with them in ourown way.

During their tour of Canada, the Royal Couplemet hundreds of Canadians and toured dozens ofsites that showcase the best of Canadas cultur-al, technological, political and historic locations. From Canadas foundations in Ottawa, Montrealand old Quebec, to our Atlantic roots, to our arcticfrontier and Canadas new west, our governmentwas pleased to welcome the Royal Couple andcelebrate the best of our past with the brightest ofour future. The Royal Couple made seven ofcialstops in four provinces and one territory in ninedays between June 30 and July 8.Tens of thousands of Canadians welcomed the

Duke and Duchess in Ottawa, Montreal and Que- bec City, Charlottetown and Summerside (PEI),

Yellowknife, and Calgary. The other highlight for Albertans of the Royal

Couples visit was their special stop in Slave Lake. The two young Royal newly-weds inspired theresidents recovering from Mays devastating wild-res. They personally delivered their gift of hope, optimism, and condence. All Albertans appreci-ated their making time in their schedule to visitSlave Lake. They inspired us all, and they broughtthe Monarchy closer to us than it has been in re-cent years.

from Jim Higgins (fence re-placement sparks debate).

The Strathmore KinsmenClub would like to pointthat the entire cost of the

If you have an issue withtown administration, get

The amphitheater was built with zero taxpayerdollars to benet all citi-zens of Strathmore andarea. The facility has al-ready been used moretimes than we have antici-pated.

To the EditorNormally, we as councillorscan take the heat, and wont re-spond by media print. However,

we feel corrective factual infor-mation should come forward.

If the concerned citizen didntreceive notication until the dayprior to public hearing, thats hisproblem. That information is outthere well in advance.

Whether I was caught offguard (as the editorial in a localpaper claims), we did not quick-ly adjourn the meeting. The mo-tion to adjourn was already onthe oor before he walked in, orstormed in.

Our business was done andadjournment was proper proce-dure. After adjournment, our so-called rapid departure, as theeditorial claims, the concernedcitizen was in fact talking withthe mayor and councillor Fuel,

whereby his concerns and issueswill be heard at the next councilmeeting (July 20).

I, as councilor, talk about re-spect and rightfully so - but itshould work both ways. I agree,I was not forced to sit on council, and it wasnt going to be easy.

However, I suggest if you wantto slam me, get the facts straight.

Heritage Days is almosthere and, as much as every-one looks forward to the ro-deo and midway activities, many are excited for the pa-

Were changing thingsup a little bit. Weve got twomarshalling areas, one forthe oats and open for themounted entries and wellmerge them together, said

Marcy Field, the 2011 paradecommittee chair. The theme this year is

Strathmore 100 Years Young, and parade partici-pants who incorporate thetheme into their entry willhave a chance to be judged

on how well they did. Thereare a number of differentcategories, which can all befound on the Strathmore andDistrict Chamber of Com-merce website.

The theme is Strathmore,100 years young and I thinkthat they can focus on youth, they can focus on the his-tory of the town. We wantto see Strathmore go really

Strathmore, 100 years youngstrong for the next 100 years. Weve made it this far, butyou dont get any place justlooking in the rearview mir-ror, you need to look ahead, said Field.

We need to acknowledgeour past, and learn from our

past, but we need to focuson our future to look ahead, and its a great town to bedoing that in. The parade committee is

still looking for volunteers,Field said, particularly teen-agers who may be interestedin being in the parade asbanner carriers.

Weve had banners madethat will inform the peoplewatching the parade wherethe rst place winners were

in each of the categories. Were looking for youngpeople that could walk theparade route and do that, said Field. There will be T-shirts and

a thank you gift given tothe banner carriers. Last

year there were over 100 en-tries in the parade and Fieldwould like to see at least thatmany again this year. Thanksto generous donations fromChamber members, Fieldsaid there will also be break-fast sandwiches served toparade participants this year. To enter into the parade,

An early centennial celebration tookplace for 4-H Canada members at theCalgary Stampede grounds on July 13. The upcoming milestone will be in2013, and it affects 4-H clubs across

Canada, including the eight clubs inthe Strathmore area.In 2013 its a great opportunity for

us to say weve been around for 100years, but what were really getting ex-cited about is what the next 100 yearshas in store for the 4-H program inCanada, said Ken Lancastle, commu-nications and marketing manager Ca-nadian 4-H Council and Canadian 4-HFoundation.

Enbridge Inc. announced their part-nership with 4-H Canada at the Stam-pede grounds, which includes com-mitting $260,000 to help support thecentennial celebrations.

Our pipelines go through a lot ofrural communities in Canada and the

4-H Clubs are such an important partof those communities. Supporting4-H is really an opportunity for us tocontribute to helping young Canadi-ans achieve their full potential, saidDArcy Levesque, Vice president Publicand government affairs Enbridge.

    Our excitement level is through

the roof right now. Weve been talk-ing about this for ve years now aboutwhat 2013 is going to have in store. Itstwo years awaywere just so excited, and what a better place to do it thanthe Calgary Stampede, said Lancastle.

He said there will be celebrationsacross Canada, and they are planninga gala in the middle of 2013. 4-H Can-ada is also working on an internationalconference. They are trying to bringpeople in from around the world to theconference in Olds, AB.

What were really trying to do is getthe word out that this is a big celebra-tion, the dreaming is big right now and we cant wait to get it started, saidLancastle.

Chinook Credit Union hosted theirrst annual Charity Golf Tournament insupport of the Foothills AIM Society on

July 8. Bill Crawford, branch managerfor Chinook Credit Union, and CraigMcKenzie, program manager with the

AIM Society, paired up to bring thefundraising event to town. The eventexceeded the expectations of both men.

It was excellent, it was a good turn-out. The weather was good, a bit windy

but overall everybody had a good time, said Crawford.

I have heard some very good reportsfrom different people who attended,

and everybody seems to have had anexcellent time, it was a huge success. There were 100 golfers who signed

up to take part in the tournament, though only 94 of them actually played.

To get 100 golfers, we sort of werentexpecting it, it was very nice to see it.

To get that kind of money was greatas far as our rst year goes, and all thefeedback was positive, said McKenzie.

Crawfords hope was to bring in$10,000 from the event, but felt he

wasnt being realistic. In the end thetournament netted just under $9,500.McKenzie said everyone was having agood time, and just made the best ofthe wind, which was the only downsidein the weather that day.

There isnt much the two men thinkwould need to be improved on.

Basically we can just build on this,I think were doing well. Theres just afew things, minor things that we talkedabout after that we would look at try-ing to improve, but for the most partI think everybodys feedback has beengreat, said McKenzie.

We really want to thank everybodywho contributed, all the sponsors andall the players, because without themtheres no way this thing would have

been the success that it was, saidCrawford. The charity golf tournament will be

back again next summer, though thedate is yet to be determined.

    Exceeding expectations

The frst annual Chinook Credit Union Charity Gol Tournaent in support o the Foothills Am

Society, was a huge success. Golers not only got to enjoy a day on the course, they were

also ed at certain holes. Boston Pizza was there handing out pizza, A&W had root beer and

Subway was handing out subs with the help o two Am Society clients.

What is loss of use?For your auto this is known as the SEF

    20. Like all things in insurance, there will

be exclusions or limitations. The claimhas to result from an incident of physicaldamage or disappearance.

When your car breaks down theinsurance company will not step up. If

you are lucky the repair shop will supplya courtesy vehicle for your use. Be sure

to nd out if you will be responsible forany damage and if so, talk to your agent

or broker.Do you drive on holidays? If youdo then having this coverage is very

important. It can help you get homewithout gouging a hole into your vacation

fund. Yes, this applies in the U.S.How much loss of use do you need?

Do you have a back-up vehicle? You might

consider how long it might take to getyour vehicle appraised, parts ordered

and the work completed. There can besignicant delays when getting your

vehicle repaired after a claim. This type of coverage will normally

be accompanied by the SEF 27 which

provides the insurance for the rentalvehicle. Again, this will have limits and

exclusions. Not all insurance companiescharge a fee for the SEF 20/27. Some will

include a set amount at no charge.Be aware that not all insurance

companies offer this rental coverage with

commercial-use vehicles. Is this on yourpolicy? Are you paying for it? Is your limit

    adequate?

The Town o Strathmore has beenan accredited agency under the SaetyCodes Act or 15 years and recently re-ceived its frst Municipal Saety Recog-nition Award.

The award started in 2003 and its to

recognize excellence in the permittingprocess under the saety codes act. Sothis year the Town o Strathmore was being recognized or our compliancemonitoring and permitting process, said Linda Nelson, Strathmores DeputyChie Administrative Ofcer. The town has a quality management

plan, which describes how the permit-ting process should be implementedand how to ensure the permits are be-ing ollowed up, defciencies are beingcorrected, the permit is actually being

inspected and there are no defcienciesand no lie saety issues.

In about 1998 Harry Salm and I setup this monitoring system, and wevebeen using it ever since, said Nelson.

Salm was the development ofcerat the time they set up the monitor-ing system, and Nelson said he is nowemployed with the Town as a building

inspector.Every two years the town is auditedor compliance monitoring and Nelsonsaid they have been getting 100 percent every year on their process. Shesaid many people come to Strathmoreand job shadow to learn how to do theprocess.

Its kind o a neat thing to fnally getrecognized or that, said Nelson.

It means that the systems that wehave in place or compliance monitor-ing are working very, very well.

The Strathmore Legion is proudto be bringing Tim Hus as their per-

former for this years Heritage Days.Hus is a Canadiana country musicsinger and songwriter, and though hehas performed all over Canada, thiswill be his rst time coming to Strath-more.

The songs that I write and perform, they are all very Canadian avoured. They are all about the people, andthe places, and the history and thefolklore of Canada, said Hus as heexplains the term Canadiana.

Hus originally hails from the Koote-nays in B.C., but has lived in Albertafor a number of years.

Seven years ago when he movedto Calgary, his specic goal was tobecome a major country music per-former.

I was over in Europe playing in ex-hibitions in Germany in the Canadianpavilion, and I was singing my Cana-dian songs there. It was kind of goingwell and I recorded my rst albumactually in Germany, said Hus.

Then I kind of wanted to give mu-sic a try as a career and I thought ifyou want to be a big country star youmove to Nashville, Tennessee andif you want to be a Canadian cow-boy singer you move to Calgary, that

made sense to me. Things have been going well and

he said every year it gets better. Heis signed Stony Plain Records and has just released his fth album called

    Hockeytown.Hus has been touring throughout

Canada, the USA, and Europe andhad performed in 200 concerts in2010 alone.

The last two summers I spentopening concerts and backing up Ca-nadian icon Stompin Tom Connors.I also co-wrote the song Hurtin Al- bertan with Corb Lund which wasa gold selling record in Canada andalso became the namesake of Corbstouring band. We are currently nom-inated for Roots Artist of the Yearat the 2011 Canadian Music Awards, said Hus. Travelling band mate Billy MacIn-

nis from Prince Edward Island is oneof the nest ddle players from theMaritime provinces and has been amember of Stompin Toms band forthe last seven years, said Hus.They also travel with Riley Tubbs,

who plays an upright string bass. The doors to the Legion open at

    6:30 p.m. July 30, and its a free event.All are welcome.

Its going to be a good time, west-ern concert with lots of Canadiansongs and some ddle tunes and alot of upbeat kind of stuff, said Hus.

This past weekend the Strathmore Magic Ju-nior B Fastpitch team was the host team of the

Provincial Fastball Championships at the Ag. balldiamonds. It was a tough weekend for any team compet-

ing against the Magic, who were on top of theirgame.

The team has just been immense, all year longtheyve played super ball and we have kids onthat team from 17 to 23, and theyve all playedequally basically as well. The pitching was out-standing and our hitting was very, very good, said Ron Walmsley, Magic head coach.

They dont get down - if they get down a runor two they dont quit - they just ght back. The team had been hoping to beat last years sil-

ver medal, which they did successfully. The girlscame out of the provincials sitting at 6-0 for the

weekend, taking the lead over everyone.

Magic has been rained out of two tournaments, but in the rst tournament they played in at thebeginning of the year, the team came out thirdoverall out of 16 teams.

In league play, Walmsley said they were about

30 games short this season due to all the gamescancelled because of rainouts, which unfortu-nately the team doesnt get to make up.

League-wise in the rst division we nishedsecond, and were just starting the playoffs now.

We had a really good season, said Walmsley. In the junior B ranks, the team we have out

here is the best team weve ever had, and wevehad some really good teams.Walmsley has been coaching ball for 47 years,

beginning in Calgary with the senior A and juniorA teams before moving to Strathmore and takingup coaching in 1999.The team has already begun playoffs in Calgary,

though the results were unavailable at press time. The girls will also be heading to Burnaby, B.C. inAugust to compete in the Westerns.

Rodeo has been part of Straws Milans entirelife.

However, things really ramped up during thesummer of 2004 after playing the hockey seasonwith the Strathmore UFA Bisons.

I always rodeoed before, but that year I start-ed rodeoing a bit more and thats when I gothooked, said Milan.

Good thing he did, because now he is $100,000richer.

The former captain of the UFA Bisons won thesteer riding event at the Calgary Stampede July17. Milan earned a berth in Sundays Champion-ship rodeo after taking his steer down in 3.6 sec-onds during Seminal Saturday.

Milan then went on to score a 3.5 seconds onSunday, before winning the championship with a3.6 second takedown in the nal.

This is unbelievable I cant even tell you howawesome it is, said the 24-year-old shortly afterclaiming his cheque. Its the greatest feeling inthe world. Its the biggest thing Ive ever won. According to Milan, he is 21st in the world

standings and is eyeing a berth in the National Fi-nals Rodeo in Las Vegas later this winter. The up-and-coming rodeo star said the inux of $100,000will go towards attending more rodeos.

I dont have any sponsors or anything, so I was going everywhere on my own money, hesaid. This is going to make it a lot easier forsure.

Despite not playing elite hockey anymore, Mi-lan is proud of his career on the ice, especiallydonning the UFA Bisons jersey, when he collect-ed eight goals and 11 assists in 36 games as cap-tain of the local triple-A midget team.

It was awesome, said Milan of his time withthe Bisons. The rst year I tried out for the Bi-sons I was one of the last cuts. The next year Imade it and I got to be captain that was anhonour.

I always went to watch the Macs Midget Tour-nament (as a kid) and I was so happy to play forthe UFA Bisons when I did.

The Strathmore Magic Junior B Fastpitch team came out on top this past weekend when they took home gold from the ProvincialFastball Championships, July 15 to 17.

The 17th annual JETS Athletics bas-ketball camp wrapped up on July 15. There were 15 kids participating inthe morning group, Grades 1 to 4, and18 registered or the aternoon group,Grades 5 to 9.JETS stands or Just Enjoy The Sport,

and making the game un while learn-ing it is the main idea behind the pro-gram.

Its been really good and this hasbeen an awesome camp, the kids Ivehad this week have been just tremen-dous, said coach Pat Fule, and JETSorganizer.

Basically what they do is, we coverall o the undamentals and skills dur-ing the morning and then probablythe last 45 minutes they get to play ineither two-on-two games, or three-on-three games.

We play them in small numbersso they can touch the basketball a lot

more. We eel the more they have thebasketball in their hand the more likelyit is theyre going to improve quickly.According to Fule, on the frst day o

camp, the kids were tired and draggedout snack time. However, by the endo the week, the kids would hurrythrough their snacks so they could get

up and practice some more. With thebasketball camps the kids got T-shirtsand basketballs, and there were littletreats or them on certain days.

Weve had a lot o kids that havestayed with JETS and then theyve goneon to other teams as they get older, said Fule.

Its not us thats done it, their skillshave been good enough and theyveliked it so much that they have keptplaying at higher and higher levels. Itskind o neat that when you see oneo your little stars that youve coached years ago has made it on to a teamwhen they are older, its kind o a neateeli
