When Jesus taught his followers the “Our Father,” he gave them more than just a prayer text to be memorized and repeated, he gave them an attitude for prayer. For many of us, our prayer is usually about asking God to come around to our way of thinking and acting. At different times and at differ-ent stages in our life, we pray for things to enhance our personal life: a promotion at work, getting a driver’s license, overcoming an addiction to drugs or alcohol, finding the right partner for marriage, for a happy death. Praying for these things is right and proper, for holding up our needs in prayer is a central part of our faith. And Jesus assures us that nothing, not what anyone thinks about us, or our own self-doubts about our behavior prevents our prayer from being heard by God: “For everyone who asks receives; and the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” So no one has it over another when it comes to prayer because all are equal before God. The attitude for prayer that Jesus gives us is that we simply do not ask for things in our prayer, but that we be open in our prayers to embracing God’s will for us. To this end, time spent in silent prayer listening to God speak to us is necessary for a strong prayer life. Also, true prayers is to imitate the compassion of Jesus in raising our hearts and voices in a cry for forgiveness, reconciliation, healing, compassion and mercy in our lives and in the world. In short we pray for peace not as the world offers, it but peace that flows from God. The peace of God will come into our lives when we actively seek pathways that lead to forgiveness in our relationships with family and those around us. One of the great saints of the Church, Thomas More (1535) wrote: “ Give us, O Lord, the grace to work for the things we pray for.” Working for the things we pray for: forgiveness, healing, compassion, mercy and justice is a tall order. But it is the right attitude for prayer that Jesus taught when he gave us the “Our Father.”
Fr. Bill
