Authorities responded to what they initially believed was an armed individual making threats in the camper section of the complex. by Mark Millican [email protected] When Michael Hub- bard and his wife, Cyn- thia, met a backpacker who asked them if they owned a Honda back at the trailhead, they feared the worst. “As we were coming out we passed some folks and a fellow said, ‘Hey, is that y’all’s Honda out there (at the parking area)?’ And I said, ‘Yeah,’ and I know when somebody asks me that, it’s not good,” said Michael. “He told us what happened and said he parked right next to us, but that our window was broken.” The Hubbards, of Sandy Springs, had spent the night of the July 13- 14 weekend on the Conasauga River Trail in the Cohutta Wilderness Area, a daunting hike that crosses the tributary 18 times on the way to Jacks River Falls and the popular Beech Bottoms area. “We didn’t go as far as Beech Bottoms, we just went about three miles and found a nice spot to camp by the river,” said Hubbard. “Our main pur- pose was to test out some of our equipment to see if it was still OK since we’ve got a big trip com- ing up. It was wet and buggy, but we enjoyed our time there. Teachers return for pre-planning Thursday, Aug. 1, to make final preparations for the 2013-2014 school year. Each area public school will hold an open house in the days prior to the first day of classes. Gilmer Pre-K’s open house will take place Monday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. Ellijay Primary School, Ellijay Elementary School and Mountain View Elementary School will be holding open houses Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. Gilmer Middle School students and their par- ents are invited to drop in to meet their home- room teacher between noon and 6 p.m., Wednes- day, Aug. 7. Clear Creek Middle School and Gilmer High School will also host their open houses the day before school starts — Wednesday, Aug. 7 — from 4 to 6 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., respectively. Marc Reece, who cur- rently leases the facility, has told Board of Com- missioner Chairman JC Sanford and Commis- sioner Danny Hall he will be terminating his lease and operation of the golf course, effective July 31. Reece said he decided to terminate after receiv- ing notice a month ago that the county was enforcing a provision of the current lease calling for a 10 percent increase in the annual lease pay- ment, based on the Cost Price Index (CPI). “I can’t afford to pay any more,” he said. The current lease calls Assessors to amend trust/homestead exemption policy by Michael Andrews [email protected] It will soon be easier for the Gilmer County Tax Assessors Office to identify some property owners whose land is under the ownership of a trust after an office policy relating to home- stead exemptions is amended. Along with a new application form, the policy amendment will also make it easier for trust-designated parcel owners to receive home- stead exemption tax breaks as long as a trustee’s name is included on the applica- tion, said chief apprais- er Richard Lamb. “We have designed a homestead (exemption) application form for a trust,” said Lamb. “This will allow us to trace the individual(s) along with the trust.” Lamb said local financial planner Jeff Riblet recently brought to his attention a spe- cial application form used in Cobb County that asks for individual trustees to be identified The Chatsworth Times A bus crash on Fort Mountain in Murray Coun- ty injured 17 on Thursday night, July 18. A church youth group from Missouri was attend- ing an event at Global Youth Ministries located at the Fort Mountain Retreat and Conference Center, according to reports from the Georgia State Patrol. The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. when the bus went off the road- way and down a hill inside the compound. Mark Andrew Brock, 47, of 5 34th St., was charged by the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, July 23, with possession of metham- phetamine after a search warrant was conducted at his camper in Coosawattee River Resort, and meth was found in a blood sample. Brock admit- tedly smoked meth Sunday night before he reported the assault Monday, authorities said.
