Series: Of the Lord’s Making and in His Time (1 Samuel)

IF YOU WILL FEAR THE LORD IT WILL BE WELL 1 Samuel 12:1-25

In 1 Samuel 12, Samuel steps down from leading Israel as judge and passes the civil leadership to Saul as king. As he does so, he affirms the good news that God is com-mitted to renewing those who acknowledge their sin and turn to Him in the fear of the LORD, seeking to serve Him faithfully. I. INNOCENCE IN LEADING THE PEOPLE BEFORE THE LORD (12:1-5) 1. Samuel has appointed a king as asked after leading the people for many years (1-2) 2. Samuel declares his innocence in leading them and they confirm it before God (3-5) II. THE PEOPLE’S GUILT AND CHOICE TO FEAR THE LORD OR REBEL (12:6-18) 1. The LORD has been persistently faithful but Israel has repeatedly rebelled (6-12) 2. Fear and serve the LORD and thrive or rebel and feel the force of His hand (13-15) 3. The LORD authenticates Samuel’s claims and the people fear (16-18) III. THE HOPE OF AN INTERCESSOR AND FEARING THE LORD (19-25) 1. The people acknowledge their sin and ask Samuel to intercede for them (19) 2. Samuel calls them to serve the LORD and not forsake Him for empty things (20-22) 3. Samuel assures them of his continuing intercession and guidance but they must fear and serve the LORD (23-25)

July 2020: Faith in the United States of America

July is our country’s birthday month. Many of the founding fathers had Christian backgrounds and statements that they made regarding the foun-dation of our country are rooted in faith. Vice President Mike Pence launched a “Faith in America” tour late June, appealing to Americans of faith ahead of the 2020 presidential election. The “Faith in America” tour seeks to highlight the important role that Americans of faith play through-out the country, particularly as the nation reopens following the corona-virus pandemic. The tour will emphasize how the vital roles churches play in their communities and in the lives of many Americans…” As we cele-brate our country’s freedom and independence, we’ll highlight quotes from America’s founding fathers that are rooted in Christianity and faith.

In a sermon delivered by Jedidiah Morse on April 25, 1799, he de-scribed the depth to which Christianity and our American government are intertwined. He explained that we face two kinds of dangers: those that our religion and those that affect our government. They are so closely allied that they cannot, with propriety, be separated, he said.

“To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom, and political and social happiness, which mankind now enjoys…Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government – and all blessings which flow from them – must fall with them.” –Jedidiah Morse

Pray

Lord, we are grieved over the lawlessness, violence and division in our nation. We pray for clear direction for our leaders that they would hear your words, and strongly stand.
