“Sadly, I Would Not Hear Him Sing Much
Longer” For years C.R. Moore had led the singing at a li le
church in Draketown, GA. On a Sunday in April, 1914, the
old familiar hymns had an extra special meaning. Brother
Moore’s son, James, was home from Mercer University at
Macon and was to “fill the pulpit.” When he stepped up to
the pulpit and looked across the congrega$on, he did so
with a heavy heart. He had been away only four years but
familiar faces that were young so short a $me ago now
showed traces of age. His nine brothers and sisters had
grown up and his mother’s heath was not what it once
was.
Most of all, the twenty-six year old ministerial stu-
dent was touched by his father’s singing. His dad had been
trained by the renowned A.J. Showalter, composer of
“Leaning On The Everlas$ng Arms” among many others.
His father had become known as one of the finest singers
in Georgia but now his voice was breaking. Recalling the
occasion of almost a half century before, the son related, “I
felt sorry for him. His voice broke and he lost the pitch. I
knew I would not hear him sing much longer.”
“As a boy, I rode the circuits of Alabama with my
father. I rode with him to many a brush-arbor revival. It
was here that I learned to love and cherish the immortal
hymns.” AKer almost half a century of service in the North
Alabama Methodist Conference, he re$red but he never
quit preaching. He never looked with disfavor upon the
old-fashioned custom of saying loudly “amen” and he
smiled on those who sat in the verbal “amen corner.”
One Sunday during the summer of 1954, I visited
the small church where he preached his last sermon. I re-
member him saying” “I love the church and its people. I
love the old hymns. In my opinion ‘Rock of Ages’ is the
greatest and I love the more recently wri en ‘In the Land
Where We’ll Never Grow Old.’” He then looked directly at
me and added: “When my Lord calls me home, I want
those two great hymns sung while I cross over the river
Jordan.”
Less than a month later, I looked across the blan-
ket of roses on his casket while the singers soKly sang
“Rock of Ages” and “Where We’ll Never Grow Old.”
“I have heard of a land on the far-away strand,
‘Tis a beau$ful home of the soul;
Built by Jesus on high, there we never shall die,
“Tis a land where we never grow old.”
“Never grow old, never grow old,
In a land where we’ll never grow old;
Never grow old, never grow old,
In a land where we’ll never grow old.”
