Full of Grace My fellow parishioners, while media is endorsing “change the world” pleas, let’s pause to reflect on how we can “change ourselves.” In our faith journey every day, we make choices about who we want to become and who we do not want to be. Sure, we would like to be more righteous, caring, and charita-ble. Catholics are motivated by inspirational guidelines like the Beatitudes, Works of Mercy, Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit, and Virtues. On the flip side, we are counseled by the Ten Commandments (do this and don’t do that), as we try to stay in our lane on the road toward the “narrow gate.” [Mt 7: 13-14].

Focusing on who I do not want to be has not worked out well for me, though. Do no wrong is not as motivating for me as the one, single phrase from our Annuncia-tion Mass homily on December 8, 2018. Father opened his reflection with “Hail Mary, full of grace.” There is no room for anything but grace in Mary’s heart. Yes, she always rejected evil, but more than this was full of the graces of Baptism when she was born without Original Sin. So, at her Immaculate Conception, the Annunciation, and throughout life she remained full of grace. Angel Gabriel’s recognition of “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you” was beautifully reinforced by Mary’s yes!: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." [Lk 1:38] Mary always proved herself worthy of her special graces when facing challenges and sacrifices through unwavering humility and trust. What an amazing example for us!

This reflection still reminds me to work towards being “full” of goodness, compas-sion, and love versus simply working on NOT being angry, self-centered, and apathetic (empty of grace?). I often fuss about the cup being half-full or half-empty. Mary’s example is to have the cup overflowing with goodness. Ancient Psalms reinforce the message: “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows.” [Ps 23:5]

Here is a contemporary message about goodness. A popular car battery manufac-turer’s CEO always uses advertising that promotes love and compassion. “The

ones, both living and deceased. It is a worthy and ancient Catholic devotional practice. To have a Mass offered, please call our St. Philip par-ish office at (281) 324-1478. We will let you know what Masses are available in the liturgical calendar. Mass intentions may be requested for most week-days and Sundays but not every solemnity or holy day of obligation, for example, the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), Holy Week or All Souls. Requests will be honored in the order in which they are received at our parish office. A $5.00 stipend, as determined by diocesan policy, is usual for each Mass your priest will offer on your behalf. Mass re-quests will be granted as close to the requested date and time as possible. If it is not possible to comply with the primary request, the next closest date and time will be scheduled. Stop by the office or give us a call. We will help you! Sincerely in Christ, Father Barker.

Dear parishioners, one of the greatest acts of Chris-tian charity is to pray for the living and the dead. We pray for the living because they are celebrating an important anniversary, a milestone in life or a se-rious challenge. People we love may be sick or suffering, searching for work, anticipating a birthday or special occasion. Thanking God for graces and blessings received, acknowledging the intercession of a blessed or saint or seeking spiritual assistance for one’s own special need are very good reasons to pray. As well, we pray for the deceased to honor and remember them and for the holy souls to be re-leased from purgatory to enjoy eternity with God and the saints in heaven. In all these ways the mysti-cal Body of Christ remains in intimate communion with Christ himself. The greatest and most powerful prayer we possess is the Mass. The fruits of the Mass are the very fruits of Jesus' redemption. This is why our Church encour-ages the faithful to have Mass offered for loved

Mary’s Blessings is currently servicing the Huffman com-munity once again after an interruption due to the health advisory. We are here and able to assist the community with their financial struggles during this time or refer them to other organizations for help.

The Huffman Food Pantry continues its curbside service on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s 9 am-12 noon. The Pantry also accepts food donations on those days, so you may drop off a bag or two. If you are lucky enough and have a bumper crop of veggies in your garden, they have been a real treat to receive; bring them early!

With your generous donations to Mary’s Blessings, we are able to send a contribution to the following organi-zations that we support, and that are in great need at this time.

$1, 500 contributed to the Huffman Food Pantry which has been able to receive assis-tance from the Houston Food Bank but even this grand a do-nation of food is distributed in no time at all!

$1,500 contributed to Birthright of Humble. Here is excerpt from the Birthright of Hum-ble website: “Planned Parenthood told her ’it’s just a clump of cells and if you get it early enough it doesn’t even look like a baby.’ Her response ‘What? Prayer to St. Joseph For Employment

Dear Saint Joseph, you were yourself once faced with the responsibility of providing the necessities of life for Jesus and Mary.

Look down with fatherly compassion upon me in my anxiety over my present inability to support my family. Please help me to find gainful employment very soon, so that this heavy burden of concern will be lifted from my heart and that I am soon able to pro-vide for those whom God has entrusted to my care.

elp us to guard against bitterness and discourage-ment, so that we may emerge from this trial spiritu-ally enriched and with even greater blessings from God. Amen.

Association of the Miraculous Medal—Prayers

Congratulations to our St. Philip First Communion Class!

On Saturday, June 7th, fifteen children received their First Communion at a private, families-only Mass at St. Philip.

To our First Communion class: We are sure that your grandparents, parents, and family al-so recall with great appreciation their first communion Mass. May you all continue to grow in faith, learning, and love. It is a wonderful gift to be in the state of Sanctifying Grace, to participate at Mass, and to receive the Body of Christ as often as you can! We are very proud of you.

One of the most popular of Catholic services is Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. It is an evening devotion and begins with in the singing of “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name“ before the Blessed Sacrament, which is exposed on the chapel altar in a monstrance surrounded by lit candles.

The song, prayers and Divine Praises are recited and meant to direct attention to worship of Christ in the Eucharist; often incense is used. A prayerful spirit is encouraged by periods of silence and prayers aimed at developing a better understanding of the mystery of the Eucharist.

After the prayers, the priest, deacon or instituted acolyte covered with a cope, his shoulders enveloped in a humeral veil, takes the monstrance into his hands and with it makes the sign of the cross in silence over the kneeling congregation. This represents the end of St. Philips period of Adoration begun with Exposition after the Friday morning Mass.

The idea of exposing the Blessed Sacrament for veneration in a monstrance appears to have first evolved at the end of the thirteenth or the beginning of the fourteenth century. The Blessed Sacrament in processions became common after the institution of the feast of Corpus Christi in 1246.

St. Philip Ministry Event Schedule “Then he said, ‘Come home with me and have some bread.’” [1 Kings 13:15]

Cut-out and post on your ‘fridge.’

Adoration was held continuously for 28 years at St. Philip, since September 1992, until our recent floods and pandemic have interrupted this blessed devotion.

Pope John Paul II said “Since the Eucharistic mystery was instituted out of love, and makes Christ sacramentally present, it is worthy of thanksgiving and worship…” As Jesus said, “I Myself am the Bread of Life. No one who comes to Me shall ever be hungry, no one who believes in Me shall ever thirst”. (JN6:35) Benediction highlights the fundamental mystery of the Holy Eucharist that our Lord is truly present, body and blood, soul and divinity in the Blessed Sacrament.

Immediately after benediction the Blessed Sacrament is carried into the sanctuary, accompanied by the people attending and replaced in the church tabernacle.

This beautiful and sacred ceremony takes place at St. Philip each Friday afternoon at the end of the day of Adoration. If you would like to join Jesus for an hour, please call Jan Hays at 281-852-3444. We will resume adoration on Friday, July 10th after morning Mass. Everyone is welcome all day or come at 3 pm to adore Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and then participate in Benediction by lending your voice in song and prayer.

SCAM Alert!

Dear Parish Families,

Be aware of recent scam text messages, claiming to be from Father Barker. These messag-es convey some type of emer-gency. Typically, they will ask for 1) an immediate re-ply, or 2) money or 3) gift cards. Scammers from non-local area codes are "working" across the Galveston-Houston diocese.

Do not reply to these messages. Fr. Barker will never send any request for help, nor will he ever send any emergency request via text message. If you receive one of these texts, ignore it and delete it.

dad” was one of the animated car “drivers” that are confronted with problems of the day that anger them as they begin to join the fray, criticizing all in their path. Then, calming music replaces blaring car horns and loving heart symbols enter the scene replacing raised fists and clenched teeth.

Returning home, God’s love enters the home along with the driver dad, as the unhappy children and stressed mom are also enriched by the same heart symbols. The whole family unites in peace. This series of commercials is called “God’s Love.” Once again, love and compassion leave no room for any discord. Full of grace, indeed.

I encourage all fellow parishioners to use this website to browse scripture, search for passages, or simply read the bible: https://quod.lib.umich.edu/r/rsv/simple.html. It may seem odd to use a University of Michigan website, however, rest assured that this is our St. Philip source used for all our Spirit and Truth bible references.

I searched several opposite feelings/emotions. I was surprised how many biblical references there are to guide us and motivate us towards righteousness and grace. Here are the number of references by search-ing each word: Joy 251, Sorrow 93; Light 384, Dark 248; Feast 238, Fast 167; Love 839, Hate (Apathy) 220.

(Continued from page 1)

Full of Grace

Here are samples of my favorites: “And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.” [Lk 8:13] “Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem, and put on forever the beauty of the glory from God.” [Bar 5:1]

“He who says he is in the light and hates his brother is in the darkness still.” [1Jn 2:9]

In these polarizing times we need to accept love and compassion in our hearts. There must be no room for not “loving our neighbor as ourselves” (double-negative intended). Let us remember Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous 1963 message, which is very true to this day: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

In summary, every day we choose to be full of graces or full of ourselves. St. Dismas, the Good Thief at the Crucifixion, surrendered to Jesus and earned eternal salvation when he said to the other thief being crucified, “’Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ And He said to him, ‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’” [Lk 23: 40-43] This is something to think about! Sincerely in Christ, Tim Logsdon

St. Benedict, Abbot; Feast Day July 11

Benedict’s name means “blessed.” His most famous monastery, Monte Cassino, has

been destroyed and rebuilt three times. His monks follow the motto Ora et labora,

which means “Pray and work.”

Benedict was born in Nursia, Italy, about 480. His parents were wealthy, so they sent

him to Rome to be educated. When he was about seventeen, he decided to become a

hermit. He was disgusted with the wild life of the students.

With the help of an old monk, Benedict found a cave on Mount Subiaco about 50 miles south of Rome. He lived

there for three years. Men recognized his holiness and joined him.

Sometime around 529, Benedict led a group of monks farther south, where they built Monte Cassino. He wrote

his Rule based on Scripture. The monks’ first duty was liturgical prayer. The Benedictine monasteries that

spread over Europe became centers of learning, agriculture, hospitality, and medicine.

Benedict’s monks created illuminated manuscripts. They helped repair the damage caused by the barbarian in-

vaders. Benedict probably died in 547. In art, he is usually shown with his Rule. In 1964, Pope Paul VI named

him patron of Europe.

Vacation Bible School and Archdiocesan Youth Conference Cancelled

CCE is heartbroken to announce that this summer’s VBS, Tracking Mary, scheduled for June has been can-celled due to on-going concerns about the virus. With our sweet parish still waiting for our long-anticipated return to campus, we could not in good conscience bring our youngest parishioners back for such an inter-active event. Fear not, we will still get to learn all about our Mother Mary and some of her most well-known apparitions next summer. We will just delay by a year. Please let your children know how sorry we are that this much-loved program will not happen this summer.

Also, the Archdiocese cancelled the annual youth gathering in Houston (originally scheduled for late July). We will also provide links for potential on-line activities such as the keynote speeches as they become available. With love, The CCE Core Team

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament, I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
