The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

“Whosoever dies clothed in this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.” This is Mary’s Promise made July 16, 1251 to St. Simon Stock.

The Scapular finds its roots in the tradition of the Carmelite Order, which has seen in it a sign of Mary’s motherly protection. It has, therefore, a centuries’ old spiritual meaning approved by the Catholic Church.

1. It stands for a commitment to follow Jesus, like Mary, the perfect model of all the disciples of Christ, who teaches us to be open to God, and to His will, shown to us in the events of our lives. Mary teaches us to listen to the Word of God in the Bible and in life to believe in it and to put into practice its demands. This commitment finds its origin in Baptism by which we become children of God. 2. It leads us into the community of Carmel, a community of religious men and women, which has existed in the Church for over eight centuries. 3. It calls us to live out the ideal of this religious family: intimate friendship with God in prayer. Mary teaches us to pray at all times, as a way of discovering the presence of God in all that is happening around us. 4. It reminds us of the example of the saints of Carmel, with whom we establish a close bond as brothers and sisters to one another. Mary also teaches us to be involved with people, being attentive to their needs. 5. It is an expression of our belief that we will meet God in eternal life, aided by the intercession and prayer of Mary.

A priest or authorized person enrolls people in the Brown Scapular only once. The Scapular holds us to live as authentic Christians in line with the teaching of the Gospel, to receive the sacraments, to profess our special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, which should be expressed each day, at least, by saying the Hail Mary three times. The Brown Scapular introduces people into the Family of Carmel and points to a renewed hope of encountering God in eternal life with the help of Mary’s protection and intercession. From Carmel’s Call, Eleventh Edition. pp 373, 374

Before all the Weekend Masses of July 13 and July 14

the Lay Carmelites of St. Peter’s will be handing out Scapulars

After the Masses Father will be available for enrollment in the Scapular.

Due to holiday scheduling, the bulletin financial report will not be posted this week. The reporting will resume next week. Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you for your generous support in last week’s Peter’s Pence Collection! Our contributions, combined with those from our brothers and sisters around the world, will help Pope Francis provide essential relief to people in need.

GOSPEL MEDITATION A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

This Sunday, Jesus reminds us that "the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few." As Catholic disci-ples, we are the laborers that the Master is sending. All around us are opportunities to share the love and mercy of Jesus Christ - our homes, our workplaces, our neigh-borhoods, even our faith communities! Lest we feel une-quipped for the task, Jesus gives us some advice.

"Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals." We might not have a theology degree or training in public speak-ing, but that doesn't mean we can't share the Gospel. The power of God is at work in simplicity. The disciples went forth with nothing as a reminder to trust in the Providence of God. Say a little prayer that God will speak through you and has a need for your gifts, just as you are.

"Do not move about from one house to another." So much of the life of Jesus was about relationships. He modeled this attitude by journeying with his disciples. Here he makes the same recommendation to them, to remain with the same family for their entire stay in the town. Break bread with others. Invite them to coffee or a game night in your home. Sharing your faith isn't just about saying the right thing, but loving well over time.

"The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off." Sometimes we want to help someone, but for whatever reason, they don't receive it well. Sometimes people aren't interested in our efforts to invite them deeper into faith. When rejection happens, don't carry it with you. Don't let it over-burden your heart. Rejoice that you share in the mission of Christ, and keep on loving the next person he places in your path!

Congratulations to three of our young parishioners who made their First Reconciliation and First Communion last weekend! Congratulations to Dennis

and Jane Dreyer who Celebrated 50 years of Marriage this past week.

May God continue to fill your hearts with love for Him and each other.

No olvides,

Gracia, Elizabeth Mendoza, Merissa Mendoza, Sonia

Pineda, Manuel Ponce, Uriel Guerrero, José Soriano,

Gabriel Rosas y Tereza Morales
