The year is half over and that’s hard to believe! It has been a very busy year with many things going on at your Club!

I hope you have been participating in these events. It is exciting!

We are just finishing up our New Member Initiative Recruitment Program as of July 13th. To date, we have had twenty (20) new members join under this program. Over half of these new members fall into the Junior Executive category which is 37 years of age or lower. This is fantastic! All clubs and associations need younger members and this shows the Club is a destination for the younger families!

The drought situation is a little scary. Our superintendent and President, Mr. Anthony and I have met with Stockton East Water District twice in trying to contract purchasing surface water from them if a percentage of our riparian diversion rights are curtailed. It is rumored that Governor Brown will be making an announcement shortly on curtailing a large percentage of the riparian right allotment. Board of Director, Kevin Kauffman has and is helping this situation immensely. Stay tuned !

The Stockton GCC SHARKS have been on a terror! As of this writing they have four wins and No loses! 99 junior swimmers on the team this year ! Thank you to all the volunteers, our two coaches ( Kieffer and Nate), team mom Mila DalPorto and the parents, grandparents ! League competition begins the middle of July. GO SHARKS !

Our Club WebSite has been revamped and it looks great. Please check it out at www.stocktongolfcc.com . If you see an error or have any suggestions please let us know in the office. Also, check out the FaceBook page if you haven’t already. Go to StocktonGCC and “like” us!

We have also met with SJAFCA staff in regards to the Smith Canal Gate project. This “gate structure” will reduce flood risk from a FEMA high-risk flood zone area. We have been told the Smith Canal levees do not meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) minimum level of flood protection. Therefore, beginning in November, of this year, the Club will begin paying an annual assessment, for thirty years to help pay for this project. Also, an issue is where the gate will be constructed in relation to where our irrigation pump is located on the #8 tee box. We will keep you updated on this situation.

The major Centennial events are being planned and coordinated by the events committee and staff. We thank our current Centennial sponsors, local businesses and members, who have decided to support the Centennial year! The list of Sponsors is in this bulletin! A huge “Thank You” to our member, Pete Ottesen who is writing the manuscript for the Centennial Book. He has interviewed many many people in regards to the history of the Club! Make sure you reserve your centennial book! Pre sales will happen shortly and books will be available next January or February. Also, we are still asking for old photos

and stories that might be able to be in the book. Photos of Club events, swim teams, golfers, Invitationals and such are important. Photos will be scanned and given back to the owners.

It’s the summer months and we have increased our parking lot security. As a precaution, please do not keep any valuables visible in your cars and always lock the car. If you see any suspicious cars or characters in the parking lot or clubhouse, please contact the office staff or management.

There is a few days left on the Membership drive so please remind your friends or associates the program will conclude on July 13th. They will then have one month to determine if they want to buy into the Club and share in the monthly incentives. I will be more than pleased to help you with this process.

Stay cool, keep hydrated and enjoy the Club!

100 Years

Russ Shepherd stands out among the Stockton Golf & County Club’s legendary members who, for more

than 30 years, held the course record of 63. Imagine a record that would stand for more than three decades only to have it shattered not once, but twice within a matter of days by brothers Andy and Ricky Barnes, who competed collegiately at the time at Arizona State.

Andy initially broke Shepherd’s record by

firing a 62 and then, less than two weeks later, Ricky shot an incredible 61, to set a course standard that still stands. Byron Meth and Stan Matthews would later tie the record with 61s. Rod Souza was part of a five some that witnessed Ricky’s record-breaking round that included two eagles, on Holes 14 and 16. “That’s what sticks in my mind about his fabulous round when he carded eagles on two holes on the back nine,” Souza said. “I’ll never forget it.” Peter Ottesen

100 Years

One Hundred New Members in One Hundred Days celebrating our One Hundred Year Anniversary.

Time is running out for our special Member-ship Drive which ends July 13th. This is a great opportunity for your friends to join SGCC with this special offer. We have invited some fantastic new members to join us, and we look forward to their active participation in our Club. We now have only 13 days to meet our goal, and we en-courage all of you to continue your efforts to help us get closer to that elusive 100. Like Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over till it’s over”.

Thanks to the vigilance of Rob Williams, our Green Superintendent, our drought concerns may have been alleviated with the action we have taken since our need for water for the course could come as early as Mid-July. Bob Young, GM, reacted quickly to Rob’s concerns and asked Kevin Kauffman, Board Member, for assis-tance in contacting Stockton East Water District

for deliverance of water, if needed, in Mid-July. I joined Bob Young and Rob Williams to meet with the GM of the Stockton East Water District last week and received preliminary approval of our request subject to the Board approval of the Water District.

The Centennial Events have been great with both of the Invitationals being outstanding and successful. A good time was had by all – good golf, good food, and good camaraderie. Kudos to all who spent hours planning these events.

The Events Committee is planning a great “Concert on the Range” with the “SunKings”, a Beatles tribute band , to entertain us on Friday, August 15th. I urge all of you to start now get-ting your table together and receive your ticket discount. You won’t want to miss this event.

Looking forward to September 6-7th, the Cen-tennial Committee has rescheduled the “Family Campout on the Range” – a fun-filled, action-packed event for the entire family. Games,

Campfire, Music, S’Mores galore, BBQ Dinner, Morning Breakfast before breaking camp, etc.

Invite your friends to join you; your tents will be set up together in pods. For more information, contact Kevin Snider (956-3193), Rich Howarth, or Bob Young. This is a very popular event that is ongoing in other clubs and is a sell-out at Round Hill Country Club every year. Aquatic/Fitness members are welcome as well as other guests.

Our Thanks and Appreciation to all of the Com-mittee Members who are putting in countless hours to make all of our Centennial Events the best ever.

See you at the club...

ONE HUNDRED NEW MEMBERS IN ONE HUNDRED DAYS • CELEBRATING OUR ONE HUNDRED YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The Senior Men’s Home and Home schedule is well under way. To date we have played 4 tournaments with our partner clubs, and

we have had very commendable turnouts at each event. Give yourselves a pat on the back! If you haven’t taken advantage of these Home and Home events, don’t despair…we still have 7 more oppor-tunities for you to come and join in the fun before we wrap up the year with our November 7th Senior Men’s championship. Please remember that you must play in a minimum of 3 “Home” events and 3 “Away” events to qualify for the championship. If you don’t qualify you can still play in the tourna-ment and be eligible for the non-championship prize pool…you just won’t be eligible for the championship. If this is confusing to you, please contact Jim Dyke for an interpretation.

Gentlemen, please mark your calendars for July 11. This is the date of our 3rd annual Senior Men’s Invitational. You should have all received a registration card in the mail. All you have to do is find yourself a senior partner, fill out the card and return it to Rich in the pro-shop. We have some exciting events planned, and we are working diligently to assure you and your guest will have a great experience. Don’t miss this fun time!

In other news, the seniors are working with the SGCC course superintendent to preserve our leaning tree on hole #14 by adding additional support to it. I know many of us have often offered expletives at that tree, but deep down you must admit it really does make the hole much more interesting.

July and August provide ample opportunities for you to satisfy your golf cravings. In July we have the Senior Men’s Invitational (as previously mentioned), a trip to Turlock, a trip to Brookside, and on July 24 the 18 Hole Ladies will be hosting the seniors at our club. In August we have tournaments at Del Rio and Spring Creek. Sign-up sheets are located by the drinking fountain on the newly constructed counter, which was built by none other than our own master carpenter, Ray Drew. Thanks Ray!

The Central Valley Seniors have 2 Monday tournaments in July, and 2 in August. On July 21 SGCC plays host to this group, and we are expecting 200 golfers from throughout northern California to participate. Bob Morrison co-ordinates this event for us, and if you would like to volunteer to assist with this tournament, please give Bob a call.

The Super Seniors play at Tracy in July, and Del Rio and Turlock in August. Please contact Bill Easley if you are interested in playing in any of these tourneys.

My most consistent and reliable shot is my double at the 19th.

MEMBER PROFILE by Kelley Spooner

She got it from her parents! What did she get from her parents? Nancy got her flair for design from her parents,

and their parents. She comes from a long line of designers; albeit a store front, floor display, or the family furniture store. She was destined to be a design/decorator. She opened her own business in 1980; Designs by Nancy.

She worked for a private firm in Madera, CA where she lived until making her way to Stockton in 1979 with husband Max and son Jim, who now lives in Linden and daughter Gina who resides in Folsom. Max worked in the banking business for several years; where he met Mike Whelan who soon convinced him and Nancy to join Stockton Golf & Country Club. They joined SGCC in 2003 and have never looked back.

Nancy didn’t immediately take the plunge into golf at the club, but it wasn’t long before she was playing golf, joined the ladies nine hole group, began to socialized and attend club events. She has grown to love the club and is passionate about the level of expertise the club depicts making the club more inviting to attract new members. She currently serves on the House Committee and is a dedicated volunteer for major club functions. In 2008, she was asked to enhance the appearance of the club using her decorating skills. One of her proudest decorating moments was collaborating with Richard

Belcher on the historical photos that hang above the stair case on the main floor of the clubhouse. The tribute concerts on the range have been favorites of Nancy’s in addition to twilight golf, glow ball, and the membership’s annual trip to Mexico.

The Bojko’s can be spotted having dinner; often after a round of golf on Sunday afternoons. Nancy embraces the comfortable and safe feeling the club exudes, as well as meeting new friends or just spending time with long time friends in the Sunset lounge. Thank you Nancy for all you do to keep the club looking awesome throughout the year.

100 Years

Our April 29th Neighborhood Party (for lack of a better name) was a huge success. Our neighboring clubs

were greeted by the registration attendees, Candy Retamoza and Joleene Peirano; followed by Mulligan sellers Marilyn Rauzi and Joyce Belt. Our lunch and food service was selected by Francesca Vera and Joyce Drew. The spring theme decorations by Kathy Chinchiolo, Nancy Sundahl and Judy Green were beautifully done. And last but not least the gorgeously designed and decorated baskets for the raffle were handled by Arleta Dovichi. All of the volunteers worked diligently and successfully to make it a great day.

Summer’s here and the games have started. Joyce Belt put together teams to travel to Del Rio on May 1 and on the May 27th she arranged for the Tuesday Ladies Club to host the Division Teams. Her players for our home field were Francesca Vera,

Candy Retamoza, Dale Muth, and Aggie Mohrmann, Susan Marks and Marilyn Rauzi. The teams for the Del Rio Match were Nancy Sundahl, Joyce Belt, Aggie Mohrmann and Dale Muth, Susan Marks and Marilyn Rauzi. The Merced Team, which is a long way to travel early in the morning, Colleen Fetters and Arleta Dovichi, Aggie Mohrmann and Dale Muth, and Susan Marks and Chickie Gregerson. Our most recent trip was to Discovery Bay and the ladies volunteering for that excursion were Judy Green and Aggie Mohrmann, Joleene Peirano and Marilyn Rauzi, and Mary Ann Poletti and Chickie Gregerson. I hope all of this is correct and that I haven’t left anyone out. Joyce tells me she appreciates all of the efforts each of the ladies has made. But it isn’t over yet, we still have Sequoia Woods and Brookside to play. We have had great team participation this year and those who have not signed up have missed some fun.

Our final 9 of the Tournament of Champions was completed on June 24th. After 27 holes of golf the SGCC Champion is Francesca Vera. The score board looked like Francesca played a great game and all of the Tuesday Ladies were happy to see her be the new champion. Right behind Francesca was the 1st Flight winner, Judy Green and 2nd Flight was snagged by Lynne Riggs. Congratulations ladies. Ten of our club members participated in the tour-nament: they were Candy Retamoza, Tari Hockert, Joyce Belt, Arleta Dovichi , Dale Muth, and Marilyn Rauzi and, of course, myself.

100 Years

FULL SWING...

The golf operation is now in full swing. We are enjoying our Centennial Year with great participation in many of our events.

We had 86 players turn out for our annual Memo-rial Day Golf & BBQ Tournament and commanded a full field in our Men’s & Ladies’ Invitationals. It is great to see the energy and excitement at our club.

Speaking of energy, we just started our Jr. Jr. Golf program. This annual program introduces 4-6 year olds to the wonderful game of golf. Some say it’s like herding cats or wrestling jello, but for us Pro-fessionals, we simply say “This is Awesome.” Our Jr. Programs introduce etiquette, swing mechan-ics, chipping and putting, to these young enthusi-asts. Our 7-17 year old programs start the second week in July. There is still room in these programs. Please contact the Golf Shop with any questions.

We have also been fortunate to host some of the most prominent Jr. Tournaments in Northern Cali-fornia. On March 15th & 16th we hosted a 2-day NCGA/NCPGA Jr. Tour Event followed by the JGANC

Jr. Classic in early June, as well as the USGA Jr. Girls Sectional Qualifier on Monday, June 30, 2014. Many of you may have encountered these players recently as they played their practice rounds pre-paring for this event. How awesome! Next will be the Corina Green Jr. Girls Tournament on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 hosted by our Tuesday Ladies group. Way to go Ladies!

100 Years

Summer is officially here and the “buzz’ around the club is well, buzzing! As we work our way through the summer months

with so many activities to celebrate our 100 years; we thank all the members who make what we do here as a club so much fun and memorable.

Speaking of celebrations…Was that a party the Ladies Invitational commit-tee threw or what? The “Birth-day Bash”, this years’ theme, was a huge success. The event hosted a field of 112 members and their guests to two rounds of golf, music, birthday games, a BBQ dinner, and an awards luncheon. Many thanks go to Adrienne Hotchkiss, Susan Filios, and their entire committee for orchestrating such an amazing “Birthday Bash” celebrating the clubs’ 100 years; well done ladies.

Our Jr.-Jr. golf program was held June 24th through June 27th. The class was 23 juniors; ages 4-6 years old, with several coaches on hand to direct them through the 4 days of camp working on putting, chipping, and full swing. (see photos) In addition to the professional golf staff we were joined by Jesus Munguia, St. Mary’s graduates; Angelica Orino, Claire Burke, Anthony Madrid, and

special coach Lisa Ferrero, LPGA Tour professional. What a treat to teach and make an impact on the young golfers; perhaps PGA or LPGA future stars!

Next up will be the Jr. Golf Camp I & II programs for ages 7-17 that are slated to begin after the 4th of July holiday. The dates: Jr. Camp I-July 8, 9, 10 and July 15, 16, & 17, followed by Jr. Camp II-July

23, 24, 25 and July 29, 30, & 31. There are still openings with sign-ups being taken in the golf shop or by phone. See you there.

Upcoming events: Here are a few dates to mark on your calen-dar of upcoming events for July: July 4th-Member shotgun 9am, July 11th-Sr. Men’s Invitational, July 17th & 18th -Ladies Club

Championship & Handicap Tournament, July 22nd-Tuesday Ladies host WNHGA Corena Green Jr. girls event, July 26th-Centennial Family Golf Day. A few special dates in August are: August 14th-Thursday Ladies Susan G. Komen breast cancer tournament, August 15th-Beatles Tribute band on the Range, and August 23rd & 24th-the Jr. Club Championship.

See you at the club,

Kelley’s Korner...

By the time you read this we will be into the heat of our summer. The temperature has steadily risen and the need for ad-

ditional water to the grass, trees and gardens etc. has also increased.

The State Water Resources Control Board has recently restricted the diversion of water from the Sacramento and San Joaquin River watersheds. We are in full compliance with the demands set in place by the State Water Resources Control Board and continue to be proactive in our efforts to secure future water for our facility needs. Our proactive efforts keep us in close contact with the Stockton East Water District.

NEW MACHINES ON THE COURSEThanks to a lease program in place we will see

a few new machines on the golf course. These machines will replace broken equipment or machines that are very difficult to keep on the golf course. This will help us to be able to complete our basic maintenance routines and keep the course in detailed shaped more often. The new machines will be more reliable, and that will allow us to concentrate a little more time on our remaining ailing equipment to keep them on the course.LADIES INVITATIONAL

The ladies invitational went well and there was a lot of smiles to be seen over the two days. The weather was a little warm, but the ladies enjoyed

the golf and games organized. Congratulations to the Ladies on another successful event.

See you on the course.

“Girls just want to have fun!” ...and they did just that at our Centennial Ladies Golf Invita-

tional Birthday Bash! Our members and their guests gathered to celebrate our special birthday with friendship and golf competition in a true party “happy” atmosphere... There were brightly wrapped packages, balloons, party games, table-cloths and all ladies wearing bright pink or char-treuse green! Adrienne Hotchkiss and Susan Filios joined forces as chairmen for this major undertak-ing! They and their committee did a marvelous job! This was a Centennial Celebration that made all of us feel very proud of the history and spirit of our club!

A best ball format inspired team work and camaraderie and the following teams were victorious:

The Club’s breakfast, lunch, lounge and dinner menus have changed to reflect the season and offer more variety to our

dining venues. The Food and Beverage committee and I look forward to your feedback on the menus. We are working on building strong membership support for all our dining venues and events.

We are introducing a limited happy hour varying in themes for the summer at the pool and the next one is on Friday July 18th, so come out and enjoy happy hour specials available throughout the clubhouse. The popular Taco Tuesdays and Slider

F R O M T H E E X E C U T I V E C H E F

Bar Buffet will continue along with comfort food, and three-course features in addition to all our menus.

The next Centennial event is the Sun Kings Concert on the Green!! A psychedelic flash back tribute to the Beatles 50th anniversary and our club’s 100th birthday. . Stephanie is currently working on the Club’s first camp out on the range, which has been postponed to Saturday, September 6th. A fun filled night with BBQ dinner, games, ghost stories, t-shirt painting, s’mores and hot chocolate followed by an early morning breakfast buffet. She is doing a great job sending out weekly e-blasts to the membership and marketing all our upcoming events, so watch out for them.

I would like to thank all the attendees of the The Point Reyes Chef’s demonstration. Karen Howard Giacomini did a fantastic presentation of the farm, the cheese and her family history. I am gathering ideas for our next chef’s event in the same format of courses paired with wine.

As you have noticed the club has been extremely busy with outside events and the Ladies Invitational. The feedback was very positive for this

event from our membership and guests. Our dining venue hours are posted in our

bulletin and as you know there are many options. One of the issues that private Clubs face that restaurants do not is variety and options in menu items. Restaurants have a target audience and for example are ethic or concept based and Club menus have to delve in all areas of trends and lifestyle changes. We are trying to meet the needs of membership in more ways such as offering more gluten free and healthier items. Feedback, good or bad from our membership is very important in this area.

On behalf of the food and beverage department, I thank you for your continued support.

Bon Appétit
