Joe Dockery & Liz Whipps Join us on Saturday, September 10th at 7:30 p.m. as Joe Dockery & Liz
Whipps perform songs of the 60’s and 70’s plus jazz and country favorites.
After meeting at Joe’s sell-out production of Saranac Lake Sings the Sixties,
the two have worked up a show to be remembered!
Joe is a chiropractor in Saranac Lake, having moved here from Virginia to
slow down, play more music and enjoy all the Adirondacks have to offer.
While in Virginia, Joe was quite active not only in performing as a percussion-
ist and guitar player in various local musical groups, but he also gave back to
the community as a music promoter and sponsor. He was executive director
of the non-profit Queen City Acoustic concert series, and along with former
Statler Brother, Jimmy Fortune, and Robin & Linda Williams he co-founded
the Fortune Williams Music Festival. Liz has been singing her whole life, both
professionally and locally, and brings down the house with spirituals and Mo-
town favorites. Together, they develop a wonderful sound and a pleasing
walk down memory lane.
This program is open to the public and a $5 donation is requested. Re-
freshments will be served. For more information, please call 518-891-7117.
Down to the Sea On Saturday, August 13th at 7:30 p.m., photographer and world traveler, Gerry
Lemmo, will present a slide talk on life at the seashore. From the beaches of Maine
to coastal Alaska, hear sounds of the sea and its inhabitants, including birds, mam-
mals and various other sea creatures. Examine some of the fascinating life forms
waiting to be found and discover what secrets modern science has discovered from
two of the unique, yet common, denizens of the sea. Images include the comical
puffin, diamondback terrapin (seen pictured below), a primitive horseshoe crab,
feisty Stellar’s sea lions and starfish in a tidal pool.
Gerry Lemmo's photographs have been featured in many books, calendars and
magazines including National Geographic, Adirondack Life and Adirondack Explorer.
He has also worked with the National Audubon Society, International Paper, The
Nature Conservancy, General Elec-
tric, the San Diego Zoo, The Lon-
don Times and the National Wild-
life Federation. Gerry has visited
six continents and has a collection
of over 70,000 photographs;
some which have been seen in
over twenty countries.
This program is free and open
to the public. Refreshments will be
served. For more information,
please call 518-891-7117.

A Note from Jamie Whidden Recently, we constructed a
beautiful, accessible deck on our
west lawn allowing residents to en-
joy the sunshine of our beautiful
Adirondack summers. It is wonder-
ful to see everyone relaxing and
conversing outside—especially on
Thursday Ice Cream Social after-
noons!
If you find it difficult to enjoy
time outside and you are seeking
companionship, fun and an en-
riched life, call us at 518-891-
7117. Summer doesn’t last all
year, so come while the warm sun
is shining!
Sincerely,
Jamie Whidden, Executive Director

From the Historian: Being a Historian I compare being a historian to being a forensic “cold case” detec-
tive. Unfortunately, there is no one left of the people who had the vi-
sion for the need of Will Rogers—a special hospital to be built for the
Vaudevillians who were suffering from Tuberculosis—like E. F. Albee
and the National Vaudeville Artists (NVA).
I find the NVA Souvenir Benefit Books to be one of my greatest re-
sources. One book talks about the hospital that now houses Saranac
Village at Will Rogers, before it was built, and shows Architecture Con-
cept Drawings. The Vaudeville News from the NVA time period also
helps. Current books and articles, however, can be influenced by the
writer’s view from their own time period. This may skew history from
what was really happening at the time which is why I try to gain as
much information as possible from articles written during the time pe-
riod I am researching.
Though much history has been lost, we all can be grateful to those
Vaudevillians and their dreams of building the hospital. The retire-
ment community, Saranac Village at Will Rogers, is a standing memori-
al to those Vaudevillians whose names have faded into history.

Resident Spotlight: Jim Glavin “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now". –Chinese Proverb. Resi-
dent Jim Glavin knows a thing or two about planting trees! As a civil engineer and landscape planner, he
has had a long life of working in the outdoors.
Jim Glavin grew up in Syracuse, New York, and earned a degree in Landscape Architecture through at-
tending the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). After grad-
uating from college in 1948, Jim became a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and
worked as a landscape planner. He designed state parks and college campuses, and was even involved
with designing the famous Carrier Dome at Syracuse University! Additionally, in 1981, Jim was named in
“Who’s Who in America”, a book highlighting important men and women who are influential in the United
States’ continued development. Jim was also honored by having a scholarship named after him at ESF.
According to SUNY ESF, “The James E. Glavin ‘48 Scholarship Fund honors Jim Glavin for his unwavering
commitment to the school, the profession and the American Society of
Landscape Architects (ASLA). The scholarship is to be awarded to LA
(landscape architect) students to pursue their course of academic study and
professional development.”
Jim met his late wife at the Sweetheart Ball on Valentine’s Day, and to-
gether they have six children; Maureen, Kathleen, Martin, Timothy, David,
and Matthew. He is also a grandfather to lots of grandchildren, and loves his
family very much.
While he was living in Cranberry Lake, Jim toured Will Rogers. He first ad-
mired the building’s beautiful architecture, but soon realized what lovely res-
idents call Will Rogers home. Jim has many friends here and enjoys cracking
funny jokes, amazing everyone with his expansive knowledge, and reading
as much as possible.
We are so happy to know you, Jim!
