Glen Campbell is in the biggest fight of his life right now, the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are no winners in that battle, and Glen Campbell knew it when he announced he was in the early stages of the disease. He recorded one last album and embarked on his farewell tour before retiring.
The man that blurred the lines between country music and pop music in the late 1960s and early 1970s may not win the Alzheimer’s battle but he certainly is one of the most award-winning singer and songwriters to have been on the country and pop charts. The sharecropper’s son from Delight, Arkansas has a lifetime filled with number one hits,

Here are a few facts you may not know:Glen Campbell was a session guitarist for some of the best in the business. The list of musicians that Glen has played guitar for whether in the studio or on tour is impressive. He was on many a musician’s first-call list when they needed a guitar player. Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” includes some of Glen Campbell’s best work. In 1964 he became a touring member of the Beach Boys when Brian Wilson retired from the road. He also played on other records from Frank Sinatra’s “Strangers in the Night,” the Righteous Brothers “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” to the Monkees’s “I’m a Believer.”
He hosted “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.” He had his own television show and special as well. In the summer of 1968 Glen took over “The Smothers Brothers Show.” The network called it “The Summer Brothers Smothers Show,” but he was so good that CBS gave

him his own variety show from 1969 through 1972. In 1973 NBC signed Campbell to do a television special called “The Very First Glen Campbell Television Special.” After naming it the network realized it was not the first time Glen had a television show. They invited Tommy and Dick Smothers, as well
as Sonny and Cher to participate in the introduction to the television show. Sonny and Cher also appeared as musical guests on the television show.
By 1969 Glen had added acting to his resume. John Wayne chose Glen as his co-star in the 1969 film “True Grit.” Campbell was nominated for a Golden Globe as Most Promising Newcomer. In addition to co-starring in “True Grit” he sang the title song, which earned him an Academy Award nomination.
Glen Campbell has a rocky romance track record. He has been married four times and he has eight children. An affair with singer Mac Davis’s wife Sarah Barg in 1976 led to his third marriage. The couple divorced just three weeks after the birth of their only child, Dillon Campbell. After their divorce in 1980 Glen Campbell was involved in what may have been the most notorious relationship of

his life. He was 42 when he met and began dating country singer Tanya Tucker, then 21-years-old. Their relationship was volatile, fueled by both drug and alcohol abuse. After the couple’s very public break-up Glen met a Radio City Music Hall Rockette named Kim Woollen on a blind date. They have been married since 1982 and have three children together.
His children and his wife are battling over control of his medical care and financial decisions. According to a report by the New York Post on May 1, Campbell’s son Travis from his second marriage has said that the care provided to Glen at the facility could be provided for him at home “by loved ones.” His children from previous marriages say their time with their father is severely restricted by his wife Kim, who has
been married to him for nearly 33 years. In January Travis Campbell and half-sister Debby Campbell-Cloyd filed a petition seeking to gain control over their father’s medical and financial decisions from his wife Kim Woollen-Campbell. In the petition Campbell’s children claim that Kim has kept him “secluded from the rest of the family.” In April, via mediation, a tentative agreement was reached and Glen Campbell’s children are permitted to visit their father, but they must give his wife at least seven days’ notice. They are not permitted to bring cellphones, cameras, fan mail or food. It is possible the food restriction may be lifted if Campbell’s doctor gives the go-ahead.
