On Tuesday morning we gathered at Concannon’s Bakery & Café for Bibles and Bagels to discuss the scripture for the coming Sunday and on Tuesday evening the Close Knit Friends gathered to knit prayer shawls and share fellowship and prayer.

On Wednesday morning, June 28 our Muncie North Cluster pastor’s prayer walked Neely to New York and Marsh back to the church. We prayed for all who live in the neighborhood around us and for the workers renovating student rentals. We prayed for a man struggling with skin cancer and a

man riding his bicycle who recently had back surgery and is homeless. We prayed for our Scout Troop and all the people who will be passing by as they go to the county fair July 17-22. We prayed for Riverside that we will continue to be the presence and witness to the Risen Christ here at the corner of Wheeling and Neely.

Wednesday evening Scouts and Crew members from our Troop 1 and Crew 1 came once again to the parsonage to complete their service project of filling in the pond that has been leaking. [See pictures on page 6]. They are preparing for summer camp July 23-29 at Ransburg Scout Reservation nestled within Hoosier National Forest on the banks of beautiful Lake Monroe.

On Thursday, June 29 the room was full of quilters from several churches working together with Covenant Partners Ministry quilting, making pillow cases, placemats, and stuffing dolls to help support their ministries. In fellowship hall the wood carvers and crafters were creating things of grace and beauty and developing relationships. One of the crafters had invited a friend to join the quilters and she was there that morning.

On Sundays we gather for worship at 9:30 am and Remedy City Church gathers for worship at 11:00 am. Two very different congregations and styles of worship sharing space in kingdom cooperation to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

A lot is happening here at Riverside as we gather to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and open the church for others to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. We celebrate these things as we seek to be more fully who God is calling us to be.

How are you growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ? What is challenging your faith? How is the Holy Spirit nudging you to do something new or to reach out to a neighbor or friend to invite them to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ? What do you see in our community that together as a community of Christ followers we might serve in making it better?

Howard Thurman was asked what needed to be done in the world. He said: "Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive."

What makes you come alive in following Jesus Christ in footwashing practical service? Who shares your passion for what makes you come alive? What can you do together to support each other in coming alive in Christ?

Having washed the disciples feet, Jesus says to them and to us, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” John 13:14-17

May we follow the example of Jesus and continue to share the blessings of foot washing practical service.

Shalom in Christ,

John

Riverside United Methodist Church Choir My earliest memories of Riverside include watching my mom, dad and grandmother singing in the

church choir. I was brought up in a musical family. Grandma Reese singing her favorite song, "Mares

eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy” to me when I was really young to Dad singing in the

Riverside Men’s Quartet. I sang with my brothers in the many musical productions the church put on all

throughout my childhood. I also remember the excitement I felt the day Doris Stewart told me that I

could join the church choir because I was officially a “young” adult. From that moment on, I have

always belonged to a church choir.

Why should you consider joining or re-joining Riverside’s church choir? Singing in church choir can

make for Better Worship. Music is an art form that lifts up ordinary text to another level that inspires

us and nurtures our souls. “To sing is to pray twice.”- Author unknown. Singing in church choir makes

for a Better Community. Singers can come together in worship, in song, in prayer, to learn and to be

better citizens of this world. Singing in church choir makes for Better Health.1

Singing creates a

positive effect on the health and welfare of the individual choir member. Singing energizes a person

while at the same time creates a calming effect, leaving individuals with a sense of peace. Focusing on

the music helps a singer forget whatever may be troubling them and center their thoughts on the words

of the music. Singers can focus on giving a gift to those around them – that gift being music. Not only is

music an emotional release, but it also may have physical benefits. Choir members may develop better

posture and using better breath support, increase the oxygen which helps with blood flow throughout the

entire body.2

The benefits of a church choir to the church itself, its members, and the community are many. As

musicians, may we continue to support and lift up those whose share their musical talents and time in

the church choir!

Riverside Choir will be starting-up again in September. We will have a kick-off get-together at the

Reese household in late August. More details to come. I hope to see many new and not so new faces.

Please prayerfully consider joining our church choir.

“Dear Pastor John, We want to thank you for allowing us to quilt in your basement. You are so open with your church, and we appreciate it. It reminds us of the New Testament churches; they helped

each other for the glory of Christ! The Quilting Group

Sunday Morning Fellowship

Because of our wonderful volunteers we will be enjoying coffee again in September while fellowshipping with others in the Joseph W. Rankin Library on Sunday mornings. Please add your name to the sign-up sheet in the library. Tom and Janet Schamp will be happy to show you how to operate the coffee brewer.

News from the Missions Team

On May 24 Riverside served breakfast for 100 people at the Covenant Partners Community Day Breakfast.

Since the paper Marsh bags are no longer available, you can use plastic bags and DOUBLE bag your items. If

you have paper bags at home please use them or bring them to church for others to use. Please remember your

bags each month – we have committed to 70 bags each month. Our next Community Day is July 26 and bags

are due by July 24.

We had a wonderful Mission/Hart Celebration on May 7. Emily presented an informative program from her

thesis project on the food needs in Muncie. We collected $929 from our M&M jars and $750 was sent to

support our missionary teacher, Sarah Turner. Our next Mission Sunday will be August 20 so keep filling

your jars.

Thanks to each of the Sunday School classes for filling backpacks for Pastor John and Darwin to take to

Annual Conference. The backpacks will be distributed to the homeless in each district.

Riverside continues to provide volunteers for the Inside/Out Kitchen each week so check the sign-up sheet if

you are interested in volunteering. We will also need volunteers to work at the Food Pantry on August 23, 24,

& 25.

The Mission Team thanks you for all of your Support and Generosity!

On April 3, 2017, Bishop Trimble called for the

Indiana Miracle Offering for Global Health inviting

congregations across the state of Indiana to give

extravagantly so that together we could impact

thousands of lives affected by HIV/AIDS and

malaria. The Indiana Miracle Offering for Global

Health supports initiatives, Imagine No Malaria and the United Methodist Global Aids Fund. The

unprecedented miracle offering called for clergy and church representatives to take up an offering at their

church and then bring that offering to the 2017 Annual Conference. The miracle offering received more than

$400,000 during the Annual Conference Session, along with additional gifts that continue to be received. We

celebrate the impact our contributions of $672.00 will have in providing treatment, education, and hope for

those affected by HIV/AIDS and malaria. Together. We. Are. More.

The Indiana Conference Board of Laity invited churches and members

of the Annual Conference to also help our neighbors who are

homeless. The 2017 Backpack Drive supported one of the Four Areas

of Focus in ministry with the poor and was received exceedingly well.

More than 900 backpacks were received and are being distributed

throughout the ten districts of the Indiana Conference. We celebrate

the three backpacks donated by our three adult Sunday School classes.

Together. We. Are. More.

Colin Hart has accepted a position as the music director of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Naples, Florida, where he will also be teaching private music lessons. Emily will begin part-time work in Emmanuel Lutheran's children's ministry in August; in the meantime, she is still searching for a full-time position in the environmental sciences. Emily and Colin are also house-hunting; they hope to become homeowners once Emily finds full time work. They both miss their Riverside UMC family, and thank everyone for their kind parting celebration, gift, and continued prayers.
