Our Bally Yr 12 Boys

Iain Salvador - School Captain

1. How is Year 12?It’s really busy with all the studying and revising for exams.

2. favourite memory of Bally? The 2011 year 12s, they were really nice and helped me become the person that I am today.

3. Favourite Teacher?Mr Walker, I feel that he has a personal connection with all his students.

4. What’s your career goal?I wouldn’t mind being a diplomat, but if not then a tutor for saxophone, piano or HSC studies.

5. What are you looking forward to when the HSC is over?Going to uni and traveling a lot more.

6. Last words of advice?Work hard, stay in school, don’t do drugs. But seriously, enjoy junior years and extension studies, you can’t do them in year 11&12.

Music ReportMusic Camp:Balgowlah Boys Combined Music Camp with Cumberland High was a unique experience that was beneficial to all students who participated from musical to drama. I was quite impressed by the standard at which the band improved over the 5 days. The students that attended were greatly developed in their skills which lead to an amazing Summer Band Tour that was also a great success but that is for the next article.

Summer Band Tour:The Balgowlah Boys, Ensembles Program’s Summer Band Tour was a great success with all the intended schools being reached on time to then be performed to by various different ensembles that were taken including, our Balgowlah Boys Concert Band, Stage Band, Year 9 Rock Ensemble and the Senior Rock Ensemble. The band played for an average of about an hour per show and played seven shows in three days and to quote our Deputy Mr Ropa “ We played more shows than P!nk!”

5. Any words of advice? If you are going to do something do it right.

6.Are you sill surfing?Yes, I try to go into the water twice a week.

Inspire: the Masterplan update

the King’s CourtAs part of the ‘Inspire’ masterplan for the school, the achievements of our Old Bally Boys are ‘inspiring’ the look of the schools’ courtyards. The first courtyard will be in front of the Canteen, with Kingsley’s accomplishments influencing the initial concepts shown here.

2. Why do you think rowing would be a good school sport? It requires and develops your strength and fitness. It is also the ultimate team sport, requiring precise teamwork.

3. What would be the Wednesday afternoon sport running schedule? We would have to work it out with your school.

4. Where can rowing through Mosman Rowing Club lead you?Ultimately national representative and eventually the Olympics. Seven rowers from the Mosman club were recently selected for the Australian National team. Many Olympians use our facilities.

5. What competitions can school boys enter?School and Club regattas, competitive rowing against other schools.

What is the difference between still water rowing and surfboat rowing?Still water rowing requires more precision and is commonly done early in the morning. Still water builds more upper torso muscles and develops quick reflexes, surfboat rowing builds stronger arm muscles and helps develop stamina.

Can training at still water rowing benefit surfboat rowing, and vice versa?Yes, doing one greatly helps you improve at the other. Still water rowing skills can be improved by repeating maneuvers until perfection, a tactic used for surfboat rowing as well. So yes, most tactics used for one can be used for the other.
