Whoever said time flies was perfectly right!

Not only have we arrived at the second Edition of “the dot” but we havealso stepped into a brand new year. Looking back over 2011, many of uswill be able to spot the milestones scattered over our professional andpersonal lives. They might include achievements, celebrations, losses andgains. However, one of the most exciting things about ending an era andstepping into a new season in time is the tremendous possibilities that anew beginning can bring.

We are very pleased at the overwhelmingly positive feedback wereceived for the first edition of “the dot”. We are also delighted thatmany of you took the time to express your excitement at having yourown platform to communicate internally.

In a company as large as ours it is easy for a sense of isolation to growand one of our goals in brining out this publication was to connect theextended Ali Bin Ali family. Your feedback has confirmed that “the dot”is on the way to achieve that goal. Sustaining that sense of connection isalso something that lies in all our hands.

So, as you flip through these pages we hope they will inspire you tothink of your own contributions for the next issue. Think about sharingyour achievements, articulating your visions, inspiring and equipping oneanother, commending your teams, celebrating your victories. This is whatthe pages of “the dot” have been dedicated for.

Returning once again to the year that lies ahead of us, those of us atCorpComm., are ready to gain new ground, overcome challenges andreach new heights in all aspects of our work and we are pleased to assistthe members of the Ali Bin Ali family in what ever way possible. HR

As part of our on-going transformationjourney, we areembarking on aseries of workshopsto complete thesecond of our eightstrategic objectivesendorsed by the EVPand Operating Board– building aCapabilityInfrastructure for theABA Group. IftekharAhmad, Group CFO isthe executive sponsorof this initiative.

A Capability Infrastructureinvolves defining, establishing, and maintainingan integrated competencemanagement framework toenable the organization tomeasure jobs and individualsaccurately, so we can recruit, develop, deploy and rewardtalent for strategic impact. Insimple terms, a key outcomeof the project will be adetailed role profile for eachemployee, specifying thedifferent competencies he orshe needs to succeed in thejob, and a job descriptionoutlining the activities and

characteristics of the job. Asan overview, the below figureshows the various elementsof a capability infrastructure:

Components of thisinfrastructure are the buildingblocks and critical enablers ofmany strategically vitalpeople processes such asrecruitment, leadership

development, talent andsuccession management, compensation and rewards. Ifwe establish this foundationalHR infrastructure correctly, ourpeople processes andpractices become integrated, efficient, and competitive.

Wadih Kazan was the projectlead of the first project –Developing CompetenceModels. Assisted by a seniorcross-functional team, Wadihspearheaded a series ofworkshops in the first half of2011 working with variousleaders to identifycompetencies that are

important acrossthe diverseprofessional roleswithin the group, also known asjob families. Thecompetencieshave beencategorized intothree, namely:(1) LeadershipCompetencies –

the skills and behaviour thatform the yardsticks on whichABA’s leadership culture isformed, (2) CoreCompetencies - thecapabilities that arefundamental to all ABAemployees regardless of role, and (3) FunctionalCompetencies – theknowledge and skills required

to perform a particular type orlevel of work for each jobfamily, such as accountants, merchandisers, etc.

The ABA Competency ModelsDirectory was finalized inAugust 2011 and the outputused to move forward withthe second phase –Developing Job Descriptions.Employee job descriptions arewritten statements thatdescribe the responsibilities, and key characteristics of aparticular job. They helpcommunicate the company’sexpectations of each role and

how it fits inside the bigpicture.

P.K. Ganesh is the project leadfor this second project, andhas led a series of workshopsstarting in May 2011,supported by a cross-functional core team, todevelop Job Descriptions forall roles across the group. Thecore team has been workingwith each division ondeveloping Job Descriptionsfollowing a standardized ABAmodel.

Once the Job Descriptions arefinalized, the third phase – Jobevaluation – will be rolledout, which will involvevaluation of the job rolesusing the Hay Scale enabling

calibration andalignment ofjob grades.employeeAssessmentwill take placeconcurrently. In summary, competencemodels will beused foremployeeassessment, and jobdescriptionswill be usedfor jobevaluations.

The mainoutcomes of the CapabilityInfrastructure project so far:about 35 competence modelshave been developed for eachjob family, a comprehensivejob description writing toolkithas been created formanagers, 380+ standard jobdescriptions are in the finalstages of being written foreach discrete role to befurther tailored for each of theapproximately 2400 jobs inthe company.

Feel free to contact theGroup HR Department if youhave ideas to contribute.

The topic positivethinking is not new to

any one of us. In fact inour daily professionaland personal life, we

keep hearing it from ourfriends, colleagues in theform of advice, especially

when we are upset ornot in a pleasant mood.

But how far people havebeen successful in

applying this in theirdaily lives? Does positive

thinking means onlytalking in a positive way

or discussing it?A famous American

author and amotivational trainer ZigZiglar has quoted about

this term as under:

no positive thinking

can get you anything,

but it can get

everything better than

negative thinking can”

You can find unlimited articles onthis topic right from Stephen Coveyto today’s Ron Kauffman. So much has been said about it andI have witnessed in people’s lifethat failure comes to them justbecause their thinking and actionsare not being positive enough.Remember there is an old sayingthat “ENERGY FOLLOWS THOUGHT”.

In my personal experience, Irealized that just by thinkingpositively you cannot achieveanything. In fact, the kind ofpositive thinking a lot of peoplediscuss today is in a way runningaway from reality of life. There is nodoubt that it is great to think as wellas speak positive. But to achievethe desired results i.e. transformingyour thoughts to action, it has to besupported by your ability and skillthat will synchronize with yourpositive thinking.

How we can use positive thinkingto maximize the blessings that lifehas to offer. So, you are a positivethinker if you:

Have full faith in yourself andsee yourself in positive angle.A good opinion about yourself.Remember if you don’t likeyourself, then others also won’t.We all have different abilities thatmakes us special and unique.Recognizing self abilities andhaving self belief will help you toachieve success in your life which isthe most important step towardspositive thinking.

Life cannot be withoutproblems. But there are solutionstoo. Rather thinking and discussingabout the problems, analyze thesituation and discover the solutionsbecause you don’t have to findthem, they come along with theproblems.

Accept challenges in life andthink of growing further. Thisthinking will help you to get thebest out of yourself to achievecontinuous success in your life.Don’t forget the fact that positivethinking also demands to acceptchallenges to improve your skillsand abilities. Do not stay withwhat you have. Try to improve. Nomatter even if you have to fail orlose, learn it. It is not a failure butyour learning experience whichwill make you a; better person.Intelligent people learn from theirmistakes and grow further.

Always be ready to go to thestep called neXT. Learn to acceptrejection and move forward. It is ahistory that successful sales peoplein the world have faced themaximum rejection in their lifewhich is one of the majorinspirations to make them moveforward.

Accepting changes and tomodify yourself is also one ofthe key strength of positivethinking. If a particular action is

giving you a same result, change itand try a new one. To have belief inself is a positive thinking but at thesame time, it is of no use to feelpositive when your action plan isnot giving you the desired result.Learn to differentiate betweenyour destination and your routethat you have chosen to reachthere. Have a focus on your dreamsand goals and be ready to changethe route if situation demands.

Have hope and faith inwhatever you do. In any givensituation, even if you had to loseanything, that is material, but ifyou lose your hope, you have losteverything. Because hope and faithare the key factors of life that helpsus to move forward withoutlooking back.

When you are performing atask give it your 100%commitment and leave theresult in hands of God. Do notget disheartened if our efforts arenot producing desired results, itmeans the supreme has got betterplans for us.

Lastly thank God for not only forwhat you have but also for whatyou have been denied as thereare bigger blessings in store foryou.

So THInK, Be AnD LIVe POSITIVe.

The answer is yes. Recycled papercan be used in the manufacturingof about 37% of all fibre basedmaterials we use in our day today lives. Recovered paper isused constantly all across theworld to make new products.Recycling paper also helps ourcommunities by keeping it out oflandfills and incinerators. Thepaper that is recovered forrecycling helps improve theenvironment and produce newpaper products that we use, thereby stopping us from

destroying trees and cuttingdown much needed forest cover. While many of us have an idea ofwhat recycling is and why it isimportant, few of us actuallyunderstand the recycling process.

What happens to paper after

we place it in the recycling bin,

or drop it off at a community

collection centre? Read on to

discover information about

Qatar’s Recycling Centres.

Contrary to what some peoplemay think, paper recycling is nota new idea. In fact, the process ofmaking paper out of recoveredmaterials is quite old. Prior to the1880s, paper was made from awide variety of recoveredmaterials, including rags andlinen.

Today, many different grades of

Recycle! Recycle!! Recycle!!!Everyone talks about it as if it’s

something really important: But is itreally? The word can be found in

discussions, on television, on billboards, and even in magazines like The Dot. Andif we start paying close attention chancesare we will even stat noticing, a number

of Recycling Bins set up here and therein certain locations, in Qatar too.

So, what’s the big deal and why isrecycling so important? How does it

happen? Can tossing our used papers in arecycling bin instead of the garbage

really make a difference?

18

Green

RECYCLINGWhat’s the

big deal?

paper can be recycled intodifferent products. Usednewspapers are usually made intonew newsprint, egg cartons, orpaperboard. Used corrugatedboxes are recycled into new boxesor paperboard. High-grade whiteoffice paper can be recycled intoalmost any new paper product, including tissue.

After it is collected, recoveredpaper is usually transferred to arecycling centre or Material

Recovery Facility (MRF), wherecontaminants such as glass, plastics, paperclips and staples areremoved. Once the recoveredpaper is free of contaminants, it isbaled and transported to a papermill where the recycling processbegins. To begin the papermakingprocess using recovered fiber, thefiber is shredded and mixed withwater to make a pulp. The pulp iswashed, refined, and cleaned, then turned to slush in a beater.Colour dyes, coatings, and otheradditives are mixed in, and thepulp slush is pumped onto a largemoving screen. Computers andspecial sensors monitor each stepof the papermaking process.

As the pulp travels down thescreen, water is drained away

and recycled. The resulting papersheet, also known as web, ispressed between massive rollersto extract most of the remainingwater and to ensure smoothnessand uniform thickness. Thesemidry web is then run throughheated dryer rollers to removeany remaining water.

Chemicals are filtered out andoften burned in an on-site

cogeneration plant that helps tomeet the energy needs of thefacility, and, in some cases, of thelocal community.

The finished paper is then woundinto large rolls, which can be 30feet wide and weigh close to 25tons. A slitter cuts the paper intosmaller, more manageable rolls, and the paper is ready for use inyour school, workplace, andcommunity.

Paper that is recycled begins lifeagain as part of the products thatwe use in our every day life.Recycling is good for theenvironment, good for business, and good for the community.

So let’s commit to Recycling – itcan start with you!

d t

PAPeR FACTS• Forests are being cut and treesare being felled at anunimaginable rate of 100 acresper minute. All this to producepaper which is normally used anddisposed without much thought.

• A plant takes a minimum of 15to 20 years to grow into a tree, but takes less than ten minutes tobe felled, and on an average onetree can yield about 700 papergrocery bags, which will beconsumed in less than an hour bya supermarket!

• every ton of paper that isrecycled, the following are saved:17 trees, 275 pounds of sulfur,350 pounds of limestone, 9,000pounds of steam, 60,000 gallonsof water, 225 kilowatt hours, 3.3cubic yards of landfill space

• Energy used to recycle paper isclose to 70% less than whenpaper is prepared using virginwood and other raw material.

• Recycling 14 trees worth ofpaper reduces air pollutants by165,142 tons.

PLASTIC FACTS • Almost every hour, nearly250,000 plastic bottles aredumped. It is not surprising thatplastic bottles constitute close to50% of recyclable waste in thedumps.

• The average time taken byplastic bottles to decompose in alandfill is close to 700 years.

• Plastic not only adds to landfillspace and takes forever to

decompose. Used plastic dumpedinto the sea kills and destroys sealife at an estimated 1,000,000 seacreatures per year!

GLASS FACTS • Glass is one of the very fewproducts that can be completelyrecycled again and again. Butmost often times, it ends up inlandfills and never decomposes.

• There is an increased demandfor recycled glass referred to as“cullet” in the glass industry. Thisis because cullet or recycled glasscosts much less than raw materialused to manufacture glass fromscratch. Cullet also consumes verylittle electricity, therebyconserving energy, whichtranslates to decrease in carbondioxide and nitrogen oxide, which

are greenhouse gases thatcontribute to the carbon footprint.

• Glass and plastic take thelongest to decompose but arecompletely recyclable, therefore,it is important to purchase, recycle, and reuse both glass andplastic products. If one can replaceboth these with any otherrecyclable or biodegradableproducts one must certainly investin the same!

STYROFOAM FACTS • A Styrofoam coffee cupdiscarded today will remain inlandfill space for close to 500years. This is because it does notget decomposed easily, ie. it isnot bio-degradable. Therefore, itis advisable to say, “no,” toStyrofoam products.

Choose to recycle because it matters

Do you know that Qatar hasone of the world’s mostexceptional naturalphenomenon right here? Thiscountry is home to one of about30 locations on the planet, where the desert actually‘sings.’ The sounds produced bythe sand mimics bumps andthumps which sometimesexpands into hums and evenreal whistling! It truly has to beheard to be believed. There havebeen reports of this activity inthe area for over 1,500 years! The phenomena is so famousthat even Marco Polo has mademention of the unique musicmade by the desert sands.Scientists say that the sound isproduced by the natural curve ofthe dunes which creates theeffects of an amphitheatre. This

effect is magnified by theshifting of the grainsthemselves. Enoughdescriptions. Now let’s get to thefund part of getting there!

Here’s how you make the trip.It will take you a 40 minutesjourney to get there and The Dotwould like to help you find yourway. Get your vehicle ontoSalwa Road.(Don’t forget your seatbelts – atAli Bin Ali we value safety!).

Drive right up Salwa Road tillyou get to the large roundaboutat the Industrial Area, do a U-turn, and take the route thatleads back past the army camp. Then turn right and proceedtowards Messaieed. Drive on tillyou pass two roundabouts and

turn left at the first junction. Here’s a landmark you areunlikely to miss: You will cross apipeline. Look out for that andwhen you get to that point youwill see the dunes.

Remember that the noise can’talways be heard, and the sandhas to be completely dry, so picka nice dry day with lowhumidity. Running or jumpingaround the dunes increases thechance of hearing the sounds. The good news is that you don’tneed to find and exact dune –because it is the area thatcreates this unique effect andnot a particular dune. So headout there and have fun. Maybeyou can even write in to TheDot and tell us about your travelexperience!

Ever get that feeling that you’ve lived here in Qatar for a considerable amountof time but you have never really ‘seen’ the country? Well We’d like to changethat. The Dot will bring you a series of travel snippets, suggesting great placesto visit. We will try and give you a glimpse into the place, share with youdetails of how to get here and let you know any other important pieces ofinformation that might help you to go take a look and enjoy our suggestedlocation. medicinal properties. Chopped garlic canused to whip up delicious sauces and asseasoning over most dishes. You can alsoadd garlic to the medicinal chicken soupfor multiple benefits. Garlic is bestconsumed raw, however, if you find thesmell unpleasant you can also takeherbal garlic supplements. But alwayskeep in mind to consult your doctor ifyou are about to undergo a surgery oryou are taking anticoagulant drugs.

My heartfelt and sincere congratulations to Mr Adel Ali Bin Ali and Mr. Nabil Ali Bin Ali on thisnew and first edition of "The Dot". It was a great read and I did enjoy it thoroughly. It filledme with nostalgia, taking me back to the good old days. It brought me to reminisce my 15+years first under their dear late father Mr. Ali Bin Ali and than under their leadership.I must say though, I do envy the changes since I left and that is only because I am not part ofit. But that was destiny.Congratulations too on the website which is open and informative. I was able to find a few fa-miliar names known to me and was happy to note their climb in the organisational structure. My very best to:

1. Magdy A. Gabrial2. Viji Kurien3. Saeed Al Hajri4. Motaz Ahmed

I and my family surely miss Doha. It was home away from home and Ali Bin Ali will alwaysremain my special place of comfort. A place where I was afforded the opportunity to go thedistance in its organisational structure. I was a youth with ambition and they recognized andnurtured it and I was sailing under their tutelage.

Consider changing the font size in your next edition - this one made reading tedious.

Please pass on my continued best wishes to Mr Adel and Nabil Ali Bin Ali.

Goodbye on NovemberTo my Beloved Father

Goodbye on November.

Sweet lullaby... Before I go to sleep

You used to read all that for me

And kiss me on my cheek so that I can dream

You showed me a world that's so real

A little child with no pain

You used to carry me all the way

We used to laugh we used to share

We used to live we used to care

Where have you been, why did you have to surrender

Leaving' you're little child to remember

All the memories when I used to lay on your shoulder

You welcomed me into this world and said goodbye on

November

Nothing will change the way I feel

Cuz I've lost….. you and me ..

Even if in time I'll start to see

Something new in my life

You'll always be the one in my mind

You made me the lady I am

When you used to teach me all the way

We used to laugh we used to share

We used to live we used to care

Where have you been, why did you have to surrender

Leaving' you're little child to remember

All the memories when I used to lay on your shoulder

You welcomed me into this world and said goodbye on

November

Breakin' my heart but you'll be fine

Safe above with the lord up high..

Heaven will only smile

Cuz you're there inside

And nothing will worry you..

Everythin' will be all right..

Just hold me tight

Like you do every time..

I'll wait for you...

In my dreams ..

Promise me and I'll sleep ..

.. forever ..
