Designing a Flower Garden? Don’t Make These 5 Rookie Mistakes

Excited about designing your first flower garden? Calm down before you make these 5 rookie mistakes. When designing your first flower garden, you’re bound to make some mistakes. Nick Statton of Monrovia plant sellers says beginners don’t ask enough questions or read plant-ing labels. The cure? Don’t be shy about bugging your local plant growers with basic inquiries - they’re there to help!

George Pisegna of The Horticultural Society of New York says newbies don’t know enough about their soil. Get smart by testing your soil.

What other mistakes do first-time gardeners make when designing and planting their flower gardens?

Mistake 1: Disregarding the sun

Do you know how many hours of full sun your garden gets each day in each season?

If you can delay gratification, study your yard over a year before designing a garden. See how long the sun shines in the fall, spring, and summer. Read planting labels to determine how much sun a particular plant needs.

Sun-loving plants, such as roses, need at least 6 hours of sun a day; partial sun/shade plants need 4 to 6 hours; and shade plants need little or dappled sunlight: more sun can burn their leaves.

Mistake 2: Failing to consider color

It doesn’t matter what color story you tell, just make sure you know the story before you plant. Here are some ideas: •Pull out your color wheel and find plants with complementary colors, such as yellow coreopsis with violet salvia.

•Monochromatic gardens are stunners. Dot your one-color story with whites (daisies) and greens (hostas), considered neutrals in the garden world.

•If you want to attract birds, add plants with vivid colors. Hummingbirds like reds, and goldfinches fly to yellows.

•Pick blooms that contrast with the exterior paint color of your house, so plants will stand out and add to your curb appeal.

Mistake 3: Over-planting

When it comes to perennials, remember this rule: First year they sleep; second year they creep; third year they leap. Be sure to leave 2-3 feet between

plants, giving them room to breathe and space to grow.

Mistake 4: Favoring lines over bunches

Tulips look like lonely soldiers when planted in lines. Instead, arrange bulbs and plants in more natural-looking, odd-numbered clusters of 3, 5, 7, and so on.

Mistake 5: Forgetting that size matters

Check labels for mature plant heights. Tallest go in back; medium in the middle; shortest in front. And don’t forget to install a focal point, like an ornamental tree or fountain.

Is it getting cooler, shadier, and less buggy on your patio and deck already? We hope so, because all week we’ve been helping you take back the outside with heat-beating misters, shade-makers, and bug fighters. Today, we’ll help you carve out a little patio privacy from neighbors’ prying eyes and bad taste in music with manu-factured or natural screens. You might even find indoor uses for some of these options.

Man-made screens

•A 4-panel, portable privacy screen, which can double as a room divider in winter, can block the view and some sound for about $300. Search and compare other options online.

•A privacy fence is a permanent and top-of-the-line solution. A 6-footer made of cedar costs $11 to $18 per linear foot; low-maintenance vinyl costs $20 to $30 a linear foot.

•Make one yourself: Get creative! Anything that stands between you and nosy/noisy neighbors will give you some privacy. A Laguna Beach, Calif. couple filled a wood frame with wood pots they bought from Ikea. They grew herbs in the pots and fashioned their own green wall.

Natural screens

•Instant green screen: Buy some giant house plants, like dieffenbachia or alocasias, and arrange them in a row on the edge of your patio or deck. Take them inside before the first frost, and put them out again next summer.

•Seasonal green: Plant some climbers, like wisteria or clema-tis, in big pots flanking panels of freestanding trellis. The plants will grow up and fill in spaces with beauty and fra-grance. A row of sunflowers makes a glorious and lush sound and vi-sual barrier (plus, it feeds the birds).

•Forever green: Bamboo is thick and quick-grow-ing, but tricky to contain. Dig a narrow ditch in front of plants and mow down shoots that creep over the line. Leyland Cypress - tall, cylinder-like trees - will grow 3 to 4 feet a year and eventually create a towering and ever-green hedge.

Instead of selling houses Saturday June 2, members of the Granbury Association of Realtors (GAR) began work to help re-do the exterior of a home within the historical district of the City of Granbury.

The home, located at 825 Switzer, belongs to Har-old and Linda Lashley. It was chosen by the GAR from nominations submitted in April from property owners in the historical district outlining why they felt their home would benefit from the revitalization and explanations about why they were unable to restore the home themselves.

According to Preserve Granbury, this built was built in North Central Texas during the 1890s as a simple Folk Hall-and-Parlor or Central Passage (dogtrot) house. “These houses are considered to be ‘icons’ of the culture of the Upland South, an area consisting mostly of Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky and Arkansas,” explains Mary Saltarelli. “Most of the settlers in this area came from Ten-nessee.”

“When the City of Granbury conducted a survey of historic resources in the neighbor-hood in 2008, the owner told the surveys that this house was built in the 1890s by the railroad in Walnut Springs for a local worker. She said her husband’s father moved the house from Walnut Springs to Granbury in 1947.”

Kay Bailey, president of the GAR, says “Project Redo” was an effort to give back to the community while helping increase the value of properties in the community.”

“I think it’s a God-sent blessing ,” Mrs. Lashley told the Hood County News in an article in the home town newspaper. “We are just not able to complete everything that needs to be done to this house. She said high winds blew off a 6-foot sec-

tion of the roof recently which they were unable to repair themselves. “I just thought, oh Lord, we need some help.”

Charlie Parrish, head of the GAR Public Relations committee was proud to report that work was done to re-roof the house, scrape and paint the exterior with historic colors, re-move a tree that is growing too close

to the house, install a new walkway, and spruce up the landscaping. The work was completed with a large amount of help from local businesses and contractors. Charlie explained, “We absolutely could not have done this without the support of our donors, the affiliates of GAR as well as members of the community who stepped up to complete this project. It was a group effort from start to finish and I could not be more proud of my committee members, the volunteers and the donors.”

If you prefer a drier cool, as opposed to misters we mentioned yesterday, read on to find some quick ways to make some shade. Plus, get some tips on getting shade with some quick-growing trees. Immediate relief

Umbrellas, awnings, and quick-assembly patio tents are quick, although sometimes costly, meth-ods of creating shade instantly.

The ubiquitous patio umbrella-found even in grocery stores for $30-can either stand alone upright or offset, or slip into a hole in your patio table.

Choose an umbrella that tilts, so you can block the sun at any angle. Or get one that’s fabulous, like Frontgate’s Rimbou Lotus Shade, which looks like a giant palm frond.

(Cost: $1,795.)

Retractable awnings, a permanent feature of older southern homes, are traditional shade makers for outdoor areas up to 12 feet from your house. Motorized awnings take the fuss out of opening and closing. Depending on size and what kind of bells and whistles they come with, awnings typically cost from $400 to $3,000.

Portable awnings are my favorite, because they make shade wher-ever, not just areas close to the house. SunSetter’s Large Oasis Freestanding Awning measuring 16 ft. by 10 ft., can provide 160 sq. ft. of shade. (Cost: $1,549 manual; $2,099 motorized.)

A cloth gazebo (aka patio tent or canopy) is another option that’s

great for entertain-ing. You can go simple and inexpen-sive ($50 for Target’s Outdoor Patio Pariesienne Gazebo Canopy, though online reviews indi-cate you get what you pay for). Or you can step it up with the Garden Oasis Lighted Gazebo, complete with lights and netting for $700 at Sears.Long-term re-leafGrowing shade trees is the greenest-and slowest-way to block the sun on patios and decks. There’s nothing as cool as sitting under the shade of an old oak tree.

If you can’t wait 20 years for a little shade, plant a quick-growing variety which, in tree language, means it grows a couple of feet or more each year. You can rush the process by paying more and buying big trees, and you’ll see a return on your investment. Here are some species to consider. •American Elm: (Zones 2-9) Grows rapidly up to 100 feet tall and 120 feet wide. Adapts to varied climates and soil conditions.

•October Glory Red Maple: (Zones 4-9) Provides a 35-foot spread and grows to 40 feet high.

•Sawtooth Oak: (Zones 4-9) Dark green summer foli-age turns yellow to brown in fall. Wildlife will love its acorns.

•Chinese Pistache: (Zones 6-9) Wonderful wide canopy and grows in all but the coldest zones.

•Natchez Crape Myrtle: (Zones 7-10) Lots of long-blooming white flowers and cinnamon-colored bark.

A few cost-effective add-ons can give a modest deck an edge and deliver a handsome payback should you sell your house.

Hidden fasteners for decking

For years now, deck screws have been the fastener of choice. (Nails, prone to popping out over time, are old news.) Deck screws come in a useful range of colors, won’t corrode, and hold exception-ally well. However, even when installed carefully, they cover the deck with rows of little pockmarks—tiny depressions that may have splintered edges and trap dirt.

Enter the hidden fastener. This clever innovation holds deck planks down while leaving the surface looking sleek and mini-malist. There are scores of hidden fasteners on the market, each of a slightly different design. One category fastens with a screw to the framing and grips the side of each plank with barbs. Another fits into a groove in the side of the plank (some composite planks come with this groove) before being fas-tened to the joist. Yet another type fastens from underneath the deck, firmly snugging the decking onto the joists.

Hidden fasteners are labor intensive to install, which adds a premium of about $4 per square foot compared with the cost of an installation using deck screws. However, many deck owners find the investment worthwhile, especially if they have selected composite, vinyl, or premium wood decking and want to show off these materials to best advantage.

Adding style with planters

Planters give a deck character. The various shapes and sizes of planters add texture and color. Built-in versions, often made of the same material as the decking, can be positioned to separate seating areas from cooking areas. When planted with tall plants, such as ornamental grasses, they can act as living privacy screens.

Wood planters typically are lined with galvanized sheet metal, plastic containers, or are built to conceal standard pots that are easily removed for cleaning or planting. Planters made of pressure-treated wood sometimes forego the liner altogether.

With all built-ins, some means of drainage is necessary, which may mean you’ll have to bore holes in the bot-

tom of the container. Because excess water will drain from the bottom of your planter, you’ll need to be mindful of where you posi-tion the planter. If you hire a pro to custom build your deck planters, assume a cost of $150 to $250 labor and materials for each lineal foot of a 2-foot deep and 2-foot high built-in planter.

Built-ins aren’t your only option. Home centers offer a wide variety of planters avail-able at prices from $10 to $200. Ceramic or cement pots can be a decorative feature,

running $50 and up for a 2-foot tall container. Hanging plant-ers (about $25 each) are a great addition to a pergola or trellis. Planters that attach to the railing ($70 for a 40-inch-long ter-racotta planter with metal holder) all but disappear when filled with plants.

Cable railings

Railings are typically required on any deck when the deck-ing surface is more than 2 feet above ground. Railings are the most visible part of the deck from ground level and offer a great opportunity to echo the colors and architectural details of your house. However, if you are lucky enough to a have a scenic vista (or just an awfully nice yard) you won’t want the railing in the way.

One solution is a cable railing--thin stainless steel cables strung tautly between wood or metal posts. This alternative looks great, preserves the view and, at a cost of about $70 per lineal foot for a pro installation, is about $1,200 more expensive than a standard wood railing for a 16x20-foot deck. To further spare the budget, consider using cable only where the view is impor-tant and use wood elsewhere. Or, if you are handy, do it your-self for a materials cost of about $25 a lineal foot.

Taming the sun with shade sails

Overhead structures like wood pergolas and trellises help shield a deck from the sun, adding a pleasantly dappled shade pat-tern. However, they can be costly to install and challenging to maintain over the years.

Shade sails are a cool, eye-catching alternative. Made of UV-resistant polyethylene knit fabric, sails are triangular, square, and rectangular, and come in a variety of colors. They produce a muted, diffuse light, cutting the glare of full sunlight while still permitting light into windows adjacent to the deck. Shade is not all the sails offer. Many homeowners consider shade sails a form of aerial sculpture and delight in watching them rise and fall gently in the evening breeze.

Shade sails for a 16 x 20-foot deck would cost about $5,500 when professionally installed. (Expect to pay at least 30% more for a custom-built pergola of comparable size.) If you have a smaller installation in mind, you can buy a 12-foot triangular shade at your home center for as little as $200. However, bear in mind that a sail can exert a mighty force on a windy day and must be attached to the framing of the house or to steel or wooden poles set in concrete. A broad selection of patio pavers accompanies increased demand for outdoor living spaces.

That variety is driven by considerable consumer demand. A 2009 Outdoor Living Trend Report by Researchandmarkets.com says that sales of outdoor living products accounted for more than 5% of all purchases at Lowe’s home improvement centers, and a whopping 29% of sales—about $2.1 billion--at Home Depot.

And there’s value to be had in a patio, too. Mack Strickland of Strickland Appraisal Ser-vices, Inc., in Chester, Va., pegs patio recovery costs at anywhere from 30% to 60%, depending on the region of the country and material choices.

Getting on base

Choosing patio paving ma-terials begins with a decision about what kind of base to install. The base—the mate-rial that supports the pav-ers—must be firm, strong, and designed to stand up to years of foot traffic and weather.

The options include, sand, gravel, and concrete. Sand and gravel perform equally well, and cost about the same to install. Both sand and gravel bases are relatively easy do-it-yourself projects.

Both sand and gravel bases feature “dry set” paver installa-tions—the paving materials are set in place, and then fine sand is swept into the joints between the materials to secure them. Every two or three years, fresh sand must be swept into the joints to replace sand that’s settled out, and pavers that have become loose must be reset. Expect to pay $2 to $3 per sq. ft. for a DIY job, and $3 to $5 per sq. ft. for a professional installation of the base alone.

A concrete base offers greater longevity and stability, with less potential for settling. On a concrete base, the paving materials are set permanently with mortar, and ongoing maintenance is minimal. Expect to pay $5 to $8 per sq. ft. for a professionally installed concrete base.

Smart Options: Patio Pavers

Brick

Brick pavers offer warmth and the possibility of intricate pat-terns. Thinner than typical “builder bricks” used on home siding, they’re formulated to hold up under heavy foot traffic. Brick pavers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and finishes, and can look old or new. Because they’re often small-er than other paver sizes, installation costs can be higher. Depending on budget, they can be installed in sand, granite, or over concrete.

Brick pavers: $14 to $20 per sq. ft., professionally installed.

Concrete

Concrete is now available in numerous finishes (brushed, acid washed, scored, and stamped) and many hues. Its long lifespan and relatively inexpensive installation make it a popular choice. “For colder climates, consider add-ing $1 to $2 per sq. ft. for a specialized base preparation and concrete additive,” says Chris Fenmore, principal with Garden Studio Landscape Design.

Stamped concrete can add a pattern to your patio, simulat-

ing slate, brick, or stone, but also adds an additional instal-lation expense of $1.50 to $2 per sq. ft. and can be prone to cracking. Concrete can also be scored to create patterns or borders.

Concrete: $6 to $12 per sq. ft., depending on finish and color.

Concrete pavers

Concrete pavers come in countless shapes and sizes, and can be fashioned to look like real stone. Unlike other materials, the concrete is molded, not cut, making them more cost effec-tive, uniform, and stronger than many natural paver varieties. They’re readily available at home improvement centers and are well-suited to DIY patio projects.

Interlocking pavers, a variation of concrete pavers, have gained popularity in recent years for their relative affordability, minimal maintenance, and quick installation. Continued on p. 28

Concrete pavers: $13 to $20 per sq. ft.

Interlocking pavers: $15 to $20 per sq. ft., $20 to $35 installed.

Stone, slate, & marble

Although almost any stone can work as a paver, cost and practi-cality typically focus on sandstone, limestone, slate, and granite. The materials you select can be especially cost-efficient if they come from locally operated quarries; check your lo-cal stone supplier before looking at national home im-provement chains. Avoid coating stones with sealers that will peel or chip over time.

Sandstone, slate, granite: $17 to $28 per sq. ft., profes-sionally installed

Decomposed granite and pebble surfaces

Decomposed granite is comprised of very small pieces of granite, ranging in size from ¼-inch to the consistency of sand. Although an affordable option, decomposed granite patios may need to be replenished periodically as the surface can erode with time, presenting higher maintenance costs. This application may be a poor choice in climates with lots of rain and snow.

“Budget $1 per sq. ft. for maintenance costs every two to three years,” suggests David McCullough, landscape architect and ASLA board member. Also, decomposed granite isn’t solid and furniture legs may sink into the surface. Adding stabilizers that help bind particles together can strengthen the surface.

Decomposed granite and pebble surfaces: $1.50 per sq. ft. with-out stabilizers, $2 with stabilizers

Recycled materials

Recycling hardscape materials, such as cast-off concrete sec-tions from a neighbor’s old driveway or sidewalk, is a cost-effec-tive and eco-friendly alternative to new materials. Check nearby construction sites for old materials (and be sure to ask permis-sion before hauling anything away).

Although the materials are usually free, you’ll need to enlist helpers and the use of a pick-up truck to transport every-thing to your patio site. Expect to save $500 to $800 on a standard 12x12-foot patio versus newly purchased pavers, and you’ll be building a one-of-a-kind creation. Look for ma-terials that provide uniform thickness. Mixing materials

Combining different materials—such as brick and concrete, or stone and rock trim, can create an interesting and customized feel. “Too much hardscape can be tedious,” notes Southern Califor-nia designer Chris Fenmore. “I often like to use four-inch troughs separating masonry from con-crete that can be filled with gravel, beach rocks, or ground cover. They provide a bit of relief from the hardscape and nice detail, adding to the custom look of the yard.”

Keeping maintenance low

Most paving options, with the exception of decomposed granite or gravel, require little maintenance. The key is a solid foundation, installation experts say. A poorly built base can cause your patio to become uneven and the stones or concrete to crack. “If your backyard is especially uneven, it may be easier to add a few steps than to level everything out,” advises McCullough.

“Be sure your paving product can withstand weather condi-tions in your area,” notes S. Penny Triplett, a real estate and appraisal expert with Pissocra Mathias Realty in Ohio. Also, because some minimal cracking may occur over time, especially around paver joints, “consider purchasing 10% more of the product you install, including grouting in the cho-sen color, in case you need to make repairs,” says Fenmore.
