Pastor Halaas and Rebekah Elder We have had to rethink what it means to gatheras the body of Christ during these challenging times. One of the most debated topics of these shifts has been whether or not to celebrate Holy Communion, and, if so, how do we do that? Arguments, models, and a variety of practices abound. There are no rightanswers, but as faithful Christians, we make decisions based on our understanding about what it means to love God and love our neighbor and based on our conversations with one another. Certainly there has been no shortage of conversation regarding this matter among Lutheran pastors and bishops! Our practice at St. Mark/Immanuel/First has been to fast – meaning to abstain – or to WAIT - from cele- brating Holy Communion together during this time. We know God still comes to us in MANY ways! One understanding of Holy Communion is Eucharist. This Greek word meaning thanksgivingis used because central to this meal is that we gather primarily to give thanks to God – for the blessings in our lives, and especially for Gods presence in Christ. Offering gratitude – thanksgiving - during this time is im- portant, and need not stop just because we are not physically gathering. Our very lives can be a thanks- giving to God even in the midst of a pandemic. Each time we eat at a table let us give THANKS! Another Holy Communion understanding is to speak of the Lords Table” ….this is a powerful way to understand the meal where/when we gather. In the meal, Christ is the host, and we are the guests. Essen- tial to this understanding is that absolutely all people are welcome at this table unconditionally. This is Gods gift to us, and we exclude no one from the table. Unfortunately during this time we are unable to realize that reality. All people currently cannot feel welcome at the table, due to very necessary safety concerns and restrictions. Gathering at the Lord s Table could put some in harms way. We would further be unable to reconcile the gap between those who are able to be physically present (when we open at limited capacity), and those who stay home for safety reasons. Until we can fully realize a table where all can equally participate, our love for one other, through ensuring their safety, is most important. A pastor friend has written about these days: We continue to adapt. My, this is surely very true! Thanks for being caring AND adaptable. Thanks for sharing your ideas, concerns, and questions! We have had numerous conversations and it is clear that the best strategy for childrenyouth ministryrdquo is to WAIT

well wait until the school year is well underway knowing that school decisions are the priority for families and there is so much uncertainty about how the start of school will be An important question how can the church care for

Pastor Halaas and Rebekah Elder

We have had to rethink what it means to ldquogatherrdquo as the body of Christ during these challenging times

One of the most debated topics of these shifts has been whether or not to celebrate Holy Communion and if so how do we do that Arguments models and a variety of practices abound There are no ldquorightrdquo answers but as faithful Christians we make decisions based on our understanding about what it means to love God and love our neighbor and based on our conversations with one another Certainly there has been no shortage of conversation regarding this matter among Lutheran pastors and bishops

Our practice at St MarkImmanuelFirst has been to fast ndash meaning to abstain ndash or to WAIT - from cele-brating Holy Communion together during this time We know God still comes to us in MANY ways

One understanding of Holy Communion is ldquoEucharistrdquo This Greek word meaning ldquothanksgivingrdquo is used because central to this meal is that we gather primarily to give thanks to God ndash for the blessings in our lives and especially for Godrsquos presence in Christ Offering gratitude ndash thanksgiving - during this time is im-portant and need not stop just because we are not physically gathering Our very lives can be a thanks-giving to God even in the midst of a pandemic Each time we eat at a table let us give THANKS

Another Holy Communion understanding is to speak of the ldquoLordrsquos Tablerdquo hellipthis is a powerful way to understand the meal wherewhen we gather In the meal Christ is the host and we are the guests Essen-tial to this understanding is that absolutely all people are welcome at this table unconditionally This is Godrsquos gift to us and we exclude no one from the table Unfortunately during this time we are unable to realize that reality All people currently cannot feel welcome at the table due to very necessary safety concerns and restrictions Gathering at the Lord rsquos Table could put some in harmrsquos way We would further be unable to reconcile the gap between those who are able to be physically present (when we open at limited capacity) and those who stay home for safety reasons Until we can fully realize a table where all can equally participate our love for one other through ensuring their safety is most important A pastor

friend has written about these days ldquoWe continue to adaptrdquo My this is surely very true Thanks for being caring AND adaptable Thanks for sharing your ideas concerns and questions Pastor David Halaas

FROM THE PARISH NURSE

Hello everyone I am finally back I have taken a little break from my monthly Parish Nurse duties and monthly newslet-ters Covid-19 has thrown a wrench into everyonersquos life since March My full time job is working with Dialysis patients My co-workers and I were one of the many deemed essential workers A lot of us not only continued to give life-saving dialysis treatments to our immune deficient patients but also traveled to help cover clinics that needed assistance during these trying times My co-workers are some of many heroes that stepped up and kept our patients safe by putting in many hours of overtime and also putting themselves at risk to Covid-19 While I was traveling during the last 4 months I was able to meet other essential workers and without them none of us could have completed our jobs during these stressful times Here in Iowa we are still dealing with and caring for Covid-19 patients and exposed individuals The numbers are slowly decreasing but are not completely down to zero We all need to continue to be diligent and stay safe Please continue social distancing wear a mask and donrsquot forget to hand sanitize or wash hands frequently These are all small items that will help all of us prevent Covid-19 from spreading Below are a few pictures of me and a few of my co-workers keeping our spirits up God bless them all and thank you everyone for all of your prayers for all of our essential workers Thank you
