When I was a teacher, I felt it was my responsibility to help mystudents discover how they could leave a positive mark inthe world with their lives. I helped them determine their

unique gifts, equipped them to use those gifts to the best of theirabilities, and then celebrated their achievements at open houses, festivals, etc.

As their principal, I also thought it was my responsibility to helpteach my students that they could leave a positive mark by helpingothers. At Crystal Cathedral’s private school, Ipiloted a program I called “Mission Learning:Teaching Habits of the Heart,” which hascontinued for seven years, with other schoolsadopting the program, integrating mission withlearning. For example, as part of the socialstudies unit, “From Farm to Market,” secondgrade students glean fields for Second Harvest, which provides foodfor the hungry and homeless, and then write about their experiences.

I recalled this same desire—to help people learn how to leavepositive marks on this world—when I viewed one of the movies that weare offering in our Summer Movie Club. “Angelo,” a movie unavailableanywhere else but through our movie club, is a heartwarming storyabout a very special boy and his mother as they find their way in ahostile and hardscrabble world. Angelo learns how to leave his positivemark through the help of a neighbor who recognizes his special abilities.

I found myself thinking that it is our divine mandate as followers ofJesus to leave positive marks on our world, and what better way thanto help someone else find their divine purpose—their calling to leavetheir positive mark. What if we all were leaving positive marks on ourworld? What would our world be like?

At Crystal Cathedral, we are committed to making a positivedifference—to leaving a positive mark. We are committed to helpingyou discover your God-given calling so you, too, may leave yourpositive mark. We pray that you, in turn, will also help others aroundyou do likewise.

As my father taught me, “Anyone can count theseeds in an apple but only God can count the apples inone seed.” You have planted countless seeds andhence countless apples with your generous supportof this ministry, which makes it possible for us tomotivate, inspire, and encourage millions to go outand leave their own positive marks. Thankyou for making an eternal difference!
