Security screening now at Bundaberg airportAir travel from Bundaberg will enter a

new era this month with security screening introduced at Bundaberg Regional Airport.

This screening, undertaken by trained aviation security screening officers, will include the use of a walk-though metal detector and the use of an X-ray machine to screen passengers’ carry-on and checked-in baggage.

The screening may also include the random use of an explosive trace detection machine on passengers and their baggage;

and/or the use of a hand held metal detector, and, where prohibited items are detected, then a physical search of passengers and their baggage is necessary. In accordance with aviation security regulations, prohibited items are confiscated by the security officers.

Council’s Mayor, Cr Mal Forman, said the new security system has been provided by the Australian Government, in line with regional airports around Australia.

“Funding for this screening equipment has been provided by the Department of Infrastructure and Transport and has been introduced to ensure passengers flying in regional Australia can do so safely and securely,” said Cr Forman.

Cr Forman said that passengers should be aware of the time the screening process may take. “Security screening may add a little time to the boarding process so I urge passengers to be at the airport at least one hour before their flight is due to depart,” added Cr Forman.

In line with the new Local Laws that came into effect this year, Bundaberg Regional Council has introduced new parking fines as of the first of this month.

These fines are only for drivers who misuse Bundaberg’s regulated parking - parking for longer than permitted, in a “No stopping” Zone, Loading Zone, Disabled Parking etc.

These new fines compare very favourably with neighbouring regions. The table below shows a summary of the four most common offences.

With the ever increasing demand for solar power, Ian Bray and Trent Slater from In2Solar have opened a shop in Princess Street.

“It just seemed the logical next step,” Ian said. People can now come to the store and talk to Pete about there solar needs.”

Pete Elson is the face you will see when you walk in and he is ready to give the correct advice on your solar needs. “The shop will make it easier for people to find out the type of solar products we have in stock and I will be able to guide them in the right direction,” Pete said.

With more than 30 years’ experience between them, Ian and Trent, along with Trent’s wife, Emma, and Pete guarantee to deliver a professional service that you can trust.

In2Solar offers various solar power and hot water solutions for domestic, commercial and rural use and is committed to supplying products that will maintain performance, work efficiently and stand the test of time.

Grid Connect PV Systems offer a basic installation of PV (photovoltaic) panels and inverter to convert DC power from the panels to AC power for your home. The system operates during daylight hours only and only

when the supply authority’s Grid power is connected. Power produced from the system is consumed within the home and any excess power is exported to the Grid.

Grid Back-Up has all the benefits of Grid Connect, plus seamless change over to a battery back-up system during power outages. Fully programmable, switch the Grid to off, start a generator and be fully automated. Become self-sufficient and still take advantage of Ergon’s Nett Feed-in Tariff.

In2Solar also provides Stand Alone systems which will allow you to be completely self-sufficient with your energy needs.

Solar Hot Water Systems - There is a wide range of hot water systems to choose from, which will help you use less energy and save money. The Australia, State and Territory Governments are working together to phase out electric hot water systems.

Well that’s a basic run down on the solar power and hot water options that In2Solar offers, but their newest solar product available is air-conditioners.

The koolsola Hybrid air-conditioner has the ability to both cool and heat your home throughout the year without the huge running costs. The benefits of a solar air-conditioner is

that no direct sunlight is required, operating for up to 15 hours after only four hours of daylight exposure, saving you big money.

To find out more on how you can go solar and save money in the long run, give Pete a call on 1300 132 046 or call in and see him at shop 1, 36 Princess Street.

Brighten up!!!!You would need to be blind Freddy to not have noticed the number of

roof mounted “Photo voltaic grid connect solar systems” appearing on Bundaberg homes. If you have not had the opportunity to talk to us on the extraordinary benefits of such equipment perhaps you should give us a call.

Many of our customers have adopted a holistic approach toward energy. Not only are they producing their own power they are also investigating ways of being far more frugal with the usage of this precious resource.

All-Safe specialises in providing quality products which make energy conservation an easy and economical task. One such product which is relatively new to the market is retro fit L.E.D lighting. Many years of research and product development have finally arrived with a product which is reliable, usable and economical to purchase and cheap as chips to run.

I will give you an example of one of our clients who decided to make the switch. This was a typical example of a reasonably new home which had been fitted out with 40 x 12volt down lights. Each of these down lights was rated at 60 watts, so if we were to multiply this wattage by 40 we find that the energy consumption per hour was 2,400 watts or 2.4kilowatts. If each light was allowed to run for just 2 hours per night that would add up to a staggering 1752 kilowatt hours per year or in dollar terms $385 per annum.

Now let’s look at the sums when replacing these down lights with L.E.D bulbs. Rather than each bulb drawing 60 watts the draw is only 5 watts (with equivalent or better light output) the yearly draw would be 146 kilowatts at a cost of $32. I believe in any one’s home a reduction in just lighting costs of this kind would be well worth the effort.

Other characteristics of L.E.D. lighting can also be of benefits to you including long life in comparison to compact fluorescent. Instant light, which means no annoying warm up time and low heat radiation which help to keep your home cool. There is also little environmental impact once they reach end of life.

Do you realise that compact fluorescent light bulbs contain enough Mercury (deadly poison) to cover the head of a pin. Multiply that by millions once they become land fill and imagine the economic consequences. These light bulbs have already been banned by many European governments and hopefully our government will follow suit shortly.

I hope some of this information has been helpful to you however is general in nature. We would love the opportunity to speak with you personally, hopefully to help you see how L.E.D. lighting can - Light up your life.

Well the month of June was great for fishing, the Bream arrived exactly as I said they would and a lot of you have been having a ball, happy faces and good catches all round.

The best places to catch a feed has been along the rock walls near the mouth, on the north bank from the mouth up past the port the rock walls at Strathdee and round the corner, to the old jetty at the molasses wharf, Kirby’s Wall and under the bridges alongside the pylons.

Main baits have been Yabbies, Mullet strips and Mullet Gut. Yabbies have been hard digging as the floods covered most of the beds, the best place, if you work hard, has been the harbour at Burnett Heads, and at the back of Paddy’s Island. Yabbies have also been firing on the Whiting, although they have been a bit scarce, it’s been hit and miss with them.

Some of the Bream caught have been snodgers, up to a kilogram! The Jacks have about finished, there are still some Barra about with a couple being pulled in along the jetty on Quay Street but they are scarce, it’s been the same with the Mullet. I fished at night with a Tilly lamp and cast net along the Burnett Heads wall and got a good haul, the next night nothing, so like me you will have to work for them.

That night with the cast net I snared a few squid, so the week later again at night I took the Tilly Lamp and near the port using a squid jig got myself a really good feed. The way I fished was I drifted with the anchor over the front in the water about 2 to 3 feet, had a spare anchor over the back, ready to drop, as soon as I got onto the squid, I dropped the rear anchor and got into them, again the Tilly lamp was on a steel rod over the stern of the boat.

The Baffle, Burrum and Kolan, have all been fishing well, with Bream,Whiting, and Flathead being the go. The Flathead have all been in the shallows, with the weed beds opposite the sailing club up the Baffle being the pick with some trophy fish being landed, mainly on floater lures like Micro Mullet in blues and pinks, the Halco’s have also been going well. When I fish the weed beds I put on another split ring and snip off the bottom hook of the trebles, this stops the weed build up on the lure.

Freshwater fishing is still a bit slow it seems the full dams are hiding the fish, the Bass are still schooling up so you will have to find them they are mostly in the middle of the dams. Blades have been the best pick in gold, but soft plastics have also been successful in paddle tail, fork tail and wrigglers. With colour take your pick, it is blue one day green the next, it’s just trial and error. The

Barra are still a bit on the small side although now and again a double arm full will take your spinner, or live bait.

Those who listened to me and put in a couple of crab pots, well they got a good feed! Crabs where everywhere trying to get out of the fresh water, for those who don’t know fresh water is lighter than salt water so lies on top, as the tide goes out the fresh flushes out the crabs who run for deeper water, this time of the year though a lot of crabs shed their shell and are empty so if they are green, press near their flipper, if it goes in, the crab is empty, please throw it back.

Not much on the off shore fishing this month, all though we did have a couple of good days. Those that pulled a sickie and went out got to fill up with some top fish, Snapper, Fingermark, Reds, Sweetlips and the odd Spanish Mackerel in among the Schoolies, but they will slow right off after this month. There is still some nice Trevally around.

Thanks to all the people that rang me back and emailed me saying how successful the video was for them on “How to Throw a Cast Net” it’s always nice to be appreciated and help a fellow fisher.

Naturopathic Information by Rebecca Lang BHSc (Comp Med)The common cold is an infection

of the upper respiratory tract caused by a virus. Despite what our mums told us, cold weather does not cause colds, although they are mostly caught in winter. This is because most cold viruses thrive better in cold temperatures, and where there is less humidity in the atmosphere. Recent research also indicates that a decrease in Vitamin D levels in winter may also be a factor in the higher risk of colds and flus. Vitamin D is immune enhancing and also anti viral. It works best as a preventative but will also reduce symptoms.

We all know that feeling of head congestion, nasal congestion, sore throat, coughing, headache, sneezing, and watery eyes. Colds usually strike 18 to 24 hours after the virus enters the body.

The flu is a highly contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. There are more than 200 different individual strains of virus that can cause colds and flus. These strains of viruses are constantly changing. However, the elderly or immune suppressed individuals should possibly consider the flu vaccine or at least discuss it with their GP.

Other than the flu vaccine, one of the best ways to prevent a bad dose of the flu or frequent colds is to build the immune system. This is important for the whole family. Even if you are receiving the flu vaccination it is still essential to have your immune system strong

The symptoms of the flu are similar to a cold but much more severe. Body aches, lethargy, fever, headaches, cold sweats as well as the congestion.

Zinc inhibits the replication of

rhinovirus and hence stops or shortens the duration of colds for people in good health. It also increases T lymphocyte production and enhances the function of other white blood cells.

From a Publication last winter by the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Cochrane researchers reviewed many clinical trials of zinc as a preventative and treatment for colds and flu’s. The authors concluded “Zinc administration within 24 hours of onset of symptoms reduces the duration and severity of the common cold in healthy people. When supplemented for at least 5months, it reduces cold incidence, school absenteeism and prescription of antibiotics in children”

Olive Leaf Extract tends to be a favourite on a retail level. As a naturopath, I don’t prescribe olive leaf for colds and flu’s due to the lack of clinical evidence. It is antimicrobial but not against the organisms associated with colds and flu’s. However, Olive Leaf Extract Children’s Formula has a cherry taste and is quite well tolerated by the little ones. It is also a good base to mix other herbs into for children. On a retail level liquid herbs would always be preferable to herbs in tablet form.

One of my favourite herbs for building the immune system is Echinacea. There is an extensive amount of research on it. It is important to ensure that you have the Echinacea purpurea root to receive the therapeutic benefits. Andrographis is another immune building herb along with Elderberry. These three herbs all have substantial scientific and clinical evidence to support their therapeutic properties.

A qualified naturopath can make you a lovely liquid formula of herbs that can be used by the whole family. This can be mixed with juices or warm water. Liquid herbs provide very high dosages such as 1ml = 1000mg of the dried herb, so only small dosages are required. Liquids also provide higher absorption as they are not dependant on digestion to receive results. It is worthwhile starting yourself and the family on some immune enhancing herbs and minerals to have a healthy and happy winter.

Please note that extensive antibacterial hand washing is essential this time of the year as well as using instant hand sanitisers and disinfectant sprays. 1st of July rings in a new financial year and a great opportunity for small businesses to invest in the environment and significantly reduce their operating expenses whilst claiming a tax break.

Effective from the start of the 2012-2013 tax year the Australian Tax Office has announced a $6,500 deduction allowing small business (turnover of less than $2 million a year) to immediately write off assets to the value of $6,500.

So what does this mean and how does it affect you?The Solar Credit Multiplier dictates the number of STC’s (Small Scale-technology Certificates) that are issued

for the first 1.5Kw of a solar power system. The annual reductions in the multiplier are a planned part of the Government’s incentive scheme designed so

How much is peace of mind really costing you?

With the increase of Funeral Insurance advertising, it seems every second advert on the television lately is about another insurance company selling Funeral Insurance. All want to get your money but have really investigated what you are getting?

Like any financial advice it is always a good idea to investigate what you are really being offered and whether it really suits you or if it only suits your insurers pockets.

As an example, a person who is 60 year old can pay up to $80,000 more than is required over the rest of their life.

Some consideration should be given to your investment including whether an Insurance or a Bond is better for you and how much you will need to plan for based on what you want from your funeral service. Like a Will, planning now will help your family in knowing what you want.

Your investment should be tax effective and both Centrelink and

DVA pension friendly. Your funeral benefit should also allow your family quick and easy access when it is required.

Your peace of mind should not cost you more than it needs to. It is important to seek the right advice from the right funeral director.

Tech Talk & TipsJanice wants to know how to make

her open office documents compatible with Microsoft office so her friends can open them when she sends them as an attachment in an email. Janice when you save your documents click save as and choose windows97/2000/xp.doc using drop down menu in “file type”, a few people have had this problem. I hope that will solve it for you all Janice? Please people DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER WHEN DOING UPDATES. Turning your system off creates all sorts of problems!

Too many people turn off their computer while it is doing updates, this will generally stop the computer in its tracks. The computer will no longer turn on - it starts and then reboots.

A lot of times people with notebooks, install the updates and turn off the computer. Unplug it and walk away. If there were updates in the memory and the battery went flat - well, in some cases, major problems again, you must re-boot.

If you see the update sign in the task bar (near the system time/clock) let it finish first and then, “RESTART” the computer. Once restarted and no more updates have come in then you can turn the pc off.

Please NOTE: sometimes I have seen a computer take a good 1.5 to 2 hours to do an update. DO NOT TURN OFF or go pushing buttons. This will not hurry it up, it has to run the course, most time your computer will run slow because it may need a clean and service, that’s right your computer, like your car needs to be serviced periodically, this will prolong the life of your computer and may get it running faster.

AMS Computers has a great special

on, just look at the bottom of this page a complete service for just $45! I don’t know how they do it? But once the dreaded CARBON TAX comes in prices on everything will go up. AMS Computers, like everyone else, will have no option but to raise prices, the one thing you can be sure of though AMS will still have the same good old-fashioned before and after service and very competitive prices along with their widely recognised professional workmanship.

Paula wants to upgrade her system to Windows 7 - If you are looking to upgrade your operating system from windows XP to the new windows 7, you will need to make sure that your system has these absolute minimum specifications: 4gig of Ram, dual core CPU, dual layer DVD burner and 250Gig of ram or higher. These are minimum requirements for windows 7, If you have less than this you will need to look at upgrading or replacing your system Paula.

The importance of BACKUP, again I cannot stress enough the importance of this action, too many times I have seen the unfortunate circumstances where a customer has lost their precious photos or music collection, even genealogy records, that have taken years to collect, so please, please “backup”. Hard drives never live forever and you don’t always get a warning sign that they are going to die, memory sticks are useful in the short term, but the best and safest inexpensive way of ensuring you don’t lose your valuable data is to periodically burn a copy of your photos/data etc to a DVD. Buy a DVD wallet and keep it in a secure place so that in the event your computer crashes and your data is not recoverable you will be able to restore

your data to your new or repaired computer.

This time of the year you are bombarded with adverts promising big discounts 40% to 30%, up to 50% off new computers, this is just a tax incentive. The catch is you have to pay for the computer first and then apply for tax refund, if you don’t qualify you now own, a more often than not, an overpriced computer, tip is phone first!

Don’t forget AMS Computers build and customise their own computers in house, that’s why they are able to back them with a 5 year limited warranty. Mathew and Steven would like to thank all the customers that bought a computer off AMS 5 or 6 years ago, for the kind words when buying a newer quicker one from us over these past few months.

I cannot stress enough to you, to be careful who you trust your computer with for your next repair, it seems more and more computers are turning up with bigger problems than what they started out with, because of unqualified people who call themselves “technicians” Bundaberg is full of people working from their shed in the back yard, most have very little qualifications and cause untold damage, before you let anyone near your computer ask questions such as what’s your ABN number, what’s your registered Business number, where’s your shop? Don’t get caught with a bigger cost or a ruined computer.

Use a professional business that has a reputation to uphold, such as AMS Computers who are up to date with all the latest technology, use professional trained technicians and guarantee their workmanship on all new computers they build with a 5 year limited warranty.

Have you pruned your roses yet? Prune them back now to three or four fresh young stems. Get rid of all the gnarly old wood. Prune to lengths of approximately 30cm with a slanted cut on top so the water can run off. Always use sharp clean secateurs to avoid any dieback occurring in the stem.

Fertilise your pruned rose with prolific blue and mulch with Lucerne hay and this will give you beautiful new growth with gorgeous roses in about 6 weeks time ready for the beginning of spring.

Keep your mulch and fertiliser up to any annuals you have already planted. Now is also a good time to reshuffle the garden. Change your landscape design; remove any plants that are just bugging you and not doing the job you want. A great time to get all the hard work out of the way so you can relax and enjoy your garden in summer and who doesn’t want to be outside on these beautiful

days.Get all your spring flowering annuals in

now. Pansies, phlox, primulas, petunias and so many more. We can grow so many annual flowers in our beautiful climate of Bundaberg.

Don’t forget the lawn. Watch out if you have bindies. Get them sprayed before they go to heads. Broad leaf weeds need to be also kept under control.

A good dose of fertiliser will also help make your lawn look that vibrant green to set off your spring garden.

If you need to top dress your lawn, do it in stages. Just lightly to begin with to let the grass grow through then top dress again.

Build up any of those low garden beds with a good organic soil. This will be of benefit next summer to prevent root rot affecting your plants.

We have a great product, at a great sale price, called Eraze and it has the same major ingredient that is found in round-up so if you have a large area that needs to be erased then this is the product to try.

So till next time, happy gardening and enjoy the coming spring weather.
